THE World Health Organization (WHO) confirmed the first three cases of Zika virus in India, as having been reported from Ahmedabad, which includes a pregnant lady tested this January. All the cases are from the Bapunagar area of the city. Confirming it as positive the website says that the ”Ministry of Health and Family Welfare-Government of India (MoHFW) reported three laboratory-confirmed cases of Zika virus disease in Bapunagar area, Ahmedabad District, Gujarat, State, India ” . It said, “ The routine laboratory surveillance detected a laboratory-confirmed

case of Zika virus disease through RT-PCR test at B.J. Medical College, Ahmedabad, and Gujarat. The etiology of this case has been further confirmed through a positive RT-PCR test and sequencing at the national reference laboratory, National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune on 4 January 2017. Dr Vijay Kohli, entomologist,

Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation, when contacted, said, “ I also read the report a few hours ago and am not equipped with information at the moment. All I can say is that we have to make sure that the surveillance is better and we work towards eradicating the mosquitoes. Ahmedabad has always been the first to report outbreaks .So

Nitish rejects suggestions of growing bonhomie between him and PM Modi, says went to discuss Bihar issues Agency | New Delhi

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Saturday met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the national capital, a day after he skipped the luncheon meeting organised by Congress President Sonia Gandhi for opposition leaders. While rejecting any suggestions of growing bonhomie between him and PM Modi, Nitish said he met to discuss Bihar related issues. After the meeting, the Bihar CM told the media about the issue of silt in Ganga, which he discussed with the Prime Minister. “The issue of silt in Ganga is getting serious, there is a danger of flood. I thought I should meet PM on this issue separately,” Kumar was quoted as saying by

ANI, adding that he had met Sonia Gandhi on April 20 to discuss opposition unity and presidential election. The chief minister also clarified to the media that it was not a political meeting but a regular PMCM meeting. “I did not meet him in the capacity of the JD(U) chief but as the state chief minister. It was not a political meeting. Why is the media reading too much into it?” he said.

He also refused to entertain questions from media persons about allegations of corruption against his ally – RJD chief Lalu Prasad – and his family members. There are allegations and counter allegations, he said, claiming that he responded only to “facts.” Nitish met Modi after attending a lunch hosted by the Prime Minister for his Mauritian counterpart Pravind Jugnauth.

either we have a lot of illnesses or we are reporting better than other states . ” Ironically the Gujarat government launched its free Gujarat from Malaria by 2022 campaign in Ahmedabad on 24th May , and has made notifiable only cases of dengue, malaria and chikun gunya, not all fever cases. “We need to be vigilant now. The virus that causes Zika and Dengue are the same. So it will be easy for Zika to spread. We are at a risk .We have to have a surveillance system in place. The government has been keen on the malaria campaign when it should have targeted all non-communicable diseases. Because

of a single campaign other serious diseases are ignored,” said Dr Deepak B Saxena Additional Professor, Indian Institute of Public Health (IIPH) Gandhinagar. “For antenetal mothers this is dangerous. Zika virus causes microcephaly which is a lifelong morbidity,” added Dr Saxena. Microcephaly is a birth defect where a baby’s head is smaller than expected when compared to babies of the same sex and age. Babies with microcephaly often have smaller brains that might not have developed properly. The WHO website also stated that, “An Inter-Ministerial Task Force has been set

up under the Chairmanship of Secretary (Health and Family Welfare) together with Secretary (Bio-Technology), and Secretary (Department of Health Research). The Joint Monitoring Group, a technical group tasked to monitor emerging and re-emerging diseases is regularly reviewing the global situation on Zika virus disease.” “ The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) had tested 34 233 human samples and 12 647 mosquito samples for the presence of Zika virus. Among those, close to 500 mosquitos samples were collected from Bapunagar area, Ahmedabad District, in

Gujarat, and were found negative for Zika ,” read the WHO notification on its website. The website also mentions the involvement of The Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram (RBSK) and states that the RBSK is monitoring cases of microcephaly from 55 sentinel sites in Ahmedabad. As of now, no increase in number of cases or clustering of microcephaly has been reported from these centers. Health minister Shankar Chaudhary and commissioner of health J.P.Gupta did not respond to calls and messages asking comment on the situation. Details of the Zika positive cases:

INS Kirch, which operates in the South Bay of Bengal, has been directed to reach Colombo and help carry out relief operations in the flood affected areas. Along with this, INS Jalashwan will be sent out from Visakhapatnam on Saturday with HADR (Humanitarian Assistance Disaster Relief) materials. The vessel will carry a team of divers and medical practitioners to assist relief operations Meanwhile, INS Shardul,

scheduled to sail from Kochi at 7 am, will reach Colombo by Saturday night. It is also carrying medical and diving teams. Prime Minister Narendra Modi while condoling the loss of lives of the victims offered relief supplies and aid to the island nation facing the worst floods in 14 years in the region. He ensured support to the neigh-

bour country in this time of disaster. The floods and mudslides in Sri Lanka are the worst in a long time. In 2003, the powerful Southwest monsoon wrecked 10,000 homes and killed at least 250 people. At least 100 deaths have been confirmed by the Lankan government while about 99 are still missing. The floods which were caused due to heavy rainfall, rendered over 2,900 people homeless, the Disaster Management Centre said. Kerala protests ban on sale of cattle for slaughter, organises beef fests

Agency | New Delhi

Kerala on Saturday witnessed “beef fests” in various parts of the state to protest the central government’s decision on banning sale and purchase of cattle from animal markets for slaughter. The protests were carried out despite Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s assurance that he would approach the Prime Minister in this matter. CM Vijayan has, however, already written

to PM Modi saying such restrictions would prove to be a challenge in upholding plurality and the essence of the nation. “It would also be against the principles of secularism and federalism enshrined in our constitution,” he wrote in the letter. This move of the Union government has been slammed by several states and organisations. Claiming the decision to be a part of RSS agenda, CM

Vijayan on Friday said, “Crores of people in the country are slaughtering animals for food. Those who consume meat do not belong to any particular

religion. Narendra Modi has interfered with people’s right to eat. If cattle is banned today, in future there could be a ban on eating fish.”

The cycles of distress in Indian agriculture

It is now 100 years since Mahatma Gandhi mobilized the indigo cultivators of Bihar’s Champaran district. This was his first mass political protest after his return from South Africa. It is also 50 years since the peasants of Naxalbari in West Bengal began their violent uprising against landlords. The Chinese Communist Party said at the time: “A peal of spring thunder has crashed over the land of India”. There is at one level little in common between these two anniversaries. The Champaran agitation was a peaceful protest against the policies of the colonial state. The Naxalbari uprising was an attempt at a violent Communist attack on the constitutional state. What is important is that both these historic events were based on the grievances of Indian peasants. Their distress was the root cause of important flash points in Indian history. Modern Indian history has been marked by several peasant revolts that were based on underlying economic fault lines. The Deccan riots in the mid-19th century were perhaps the first challenge to colonial rule since 1857. It is useful to remember that at least two of the major political movements launched by Gandhi were timed with a massive deflation in the prices of agricultural commodities—after World War I, and then during the Great Depression. Naxalbari also took place when Indian agriculture had been hit by two successive droughts. It is worth asking why India has not seen similar episodes in the past few decades despite persistent cycles of farmer distress. There are two possible interlocking reasons. First, Indian agriculture has moved on from feudalism. The tight hold that landlords had over peasants has eased thanks not just to the rise of capitalism in farming but also the possibilities of getting non-farm jobs in the rural areas on the one hand, and migration to cities on the other. Second, the Indian state has, since the Green Revolution, taken at least some of the risk out of agriculture by providing farm inputs at subsidized costs as well as providing guaranteed prices for certain types of farm produce. The growing importance of agricultural subsidies in Indian budgets can at least partially be understood as a reflection of the growing clout of that part of the peasantry that was enriched by the Green Revolution. The major farmer or peasant protests since the 1980s have thus been focused on getting more benefits from the government rather than making any fundamental changes in the way agriculture is organized. Think of either someone like Charan Singh, who worked through the party system, or Mahendra Singh Tikait, who led his protests as a political outsider. The focus of their politics was inevitably to lower input prices or higher support prices. The system of state support is now buckling under fiscal pressure. There is little offered by way of alternatives. The Narendra Modi government has committed itself to doubling farmer incomes by 2022—but without articulating a strategy on how to reach this commendable goal.

DAY Dobaara: See Your Evil — Here's ‘Sachin: A Billion Dreams’ box-office how Saqib Saleem prepared for collection Day 1: Sachin Tendulkar’s biopic his role in the film Agency | New Delhi

‘Sachin: A Billion Dreams’ hit the screens on Friday amidst much hype and anticipation. The Hindi version of the biopic that traces the journey of cricketing legend Sachin Tendulkar collected approximately Rs 7 crore (nett) on its opening day, according to a report on Boxofficeindia. com. The film also released in Marathi, Tamil, Telugu and English which should take the all-India business towards Rs 8 crore (nett) or maybe even a little higher. Ever since the news of a film on Sachin Tendulkar’s life broke out, the entire nation was eager to witness the journey of one of the most celebrated names in Indian cricket history. Written and directed by James Erskine, the film delves

into how Sachin became the gifted cricketer that we all came to know him by, throwing light on his perseverance and preparation, his trials and tribulations. The biopic also gives a glimpse of his childhood, which has otherwise been largely kept private except for the news-making innings that he played for his school’s cricket team. The film’s premiere that was held earlier this week in Mumbai, was a star-studded affair. The biggest stars of Bollywood, from Amitabh Bachchan to

Shah Rukh Khan and Ranveer Singh, came to lend their support to the Master Blaster on his big day. The Indian cricket team too came in full force at the special screening. Legendary batsman Sachin Tendulkar has admitted that he had warned a BCCI official before the start of ICC 2007 World Cup that Team India wasn’t in great shape. India suffered a horrifying exit from the group stages after losing to Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. In his recently released biopic ‘Sachin: A Billion

stricts the film to audiences over the age of 17. The film could also have been hurt by negative reviews. It currently stands at 18% on the review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes. But the producers are already preparing a sequel. At a New York screening on Friday, producer Beau Flynn told Va riety that the already have an “amazing story” for the second film. “We’re bringing back Shannon and Swift who wrote on the first one, and I know Dwayne would be in, I know Zac and all the girls would be. We just have this really cool idea to put them in this whole new world. We would take it overseas.” Baywatch is scheduled for a June 2 release in India.

Priyanka Chopra’s Baywatch stuck in the sand, box office as disappointing as reviews Agency | Mumbai

Priyanka Chopra’s debut Hollywood movie Baywatch is having a seaside battle with Johnny Depp’s fifth Pirates of the Caribbean film at the box office -- and there’s a clear winner. Deadline reports that Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (Salazar’s Revenge in India) opened to an estimated $24-$26 million (approximately Rs 160 crore) in its US debut on Friday. Baywatch, which stars Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron in leading roles, made $6-$7 million (Rs 41 crore). The reboot of the hit ’90s TV show starring Pamela Anderson and David Hasselhoff was pushed by one week in India, to avoid competition. The film has been produced at an estimated budget of $69 million (Rs 445 crore). Meanwhile, the latest Pirates of the Caribbean film was made for $230 million (approximately Rs 1500 crore). Deadline is already calling Baywatch’s opening numbers “slow”. “Baywatch is stuck in the sand, playing slow

Dreams’, Tendulkar stated that he wasn’t quite happy with the appointment of Greg Chappell in the side with the latter behaving more like a schoolmaster than a national team coach. “A number of senior players disagreed with the manner in which Chappel was handling our side. Just before a month from the World Cup, he made drastic changes in the batting order that affected everyone in the side. And, they were not needed. Other teams had been practicing according to their plans and strategies for the past one year then. But we were still experimenting with our side,” Tendulkar is seen narrating his experience in the movie.

The film is an official remake of the Hollywood supernatural horror thriller Oculus which released back in 2013. In the film, Saleem plays the role of a guy who speaks very little and is more of

a laconic person. He has been incriminated in a juvenile prison for around 12 odd years for no fault of his. This has resulted to his quiet and reticent behaviour. Saleem, who otherwise is known for his affable and fun-loving roles, had to prepare a lot for this role to understand the nuances of his character. Mid-dayreports that to justify his performance, Saleem visited Prayas Juvenile Aid Centre Society in Delhi before shooting for the film. He said in a statement that “there were boys from 5 to 21 years old.

Pirates of the Caribbean Dead Men Tell No Tales movie review: Johnny Depp’s film

Agency | Mumbai The fifth installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean series, Dead Men Tell No Tales, is out. The first Pirates of the Caribbean film, The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003), unexpectedly struck gold at the box office, and spawned a series of unimpressive sequels. Almost a decade and a half later comes the fifth instalment in the series, one Disney has been milking for far too long. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales is a convoluted mix of too many subplots, making the audience feel like the film is much longer than its 129-minute runtime (surprisingly, it’s the shortest film in the series). Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales introduces the next-gen of protagonists, Henry Turner (son of Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann) and Carina Smith, should Johnny Depp get tired of his Captain Jack Sparrow act. Henry (Brenton Thwaites) seeks the Trident of Poseidon to free his father

from the curse that binds him to The Flying Dutchman. He and Carina (Kaya Scodelario), an astronomer and horologist, enlist the help of Jack and his crew to find the treasure. Meanwhile, the menacing Armando Salazar (Javier Bardem) is baying for Jack’s blood, after the pirate’s actions got him and his crew trapped in a state of being undead and cursed to never be able to set foot on land. Interestingly, the origin of the Pirates of the Caribbean films is the ride of the same name at Disneyland. A ride losing its fun and novelty after repeated runs is therefore more than an apt metaphor here. Johnny Depp, who got an Oscar nomination for Best Actor for playing Captain Jack Sparrow the first time, comes across as almost caricaturish in some scenes in his fifth. Five films later, he has nothing new to offer, and if anything, you’ll begin to get tired of the over-the-top drunken act. Javier Bardem snarls and gets the vil-

lain act right; he is one of the few who keep the film afloat. Brenton Thwaites and Kaya Scodelario are inevitably compared to Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley of the earlier Pirates films, the senior couple coming off looking better. You wonder why David Wenham’s Captain of the Royal Navy character is even there. Although largely repetitive, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales does have some redeemable moments. The bank robbery gone awry in the beginning of the film evokes some laughs as does the scene featuring a guillotine and Johnny Depp. There are a few jokes on Carina’s profession (a horologist), but fail to tickle the funny bone. The script is poor, and too many backstories and subplots make the film hard to keep track of. From Henry to Salazar, Carina to Barbossa, everyone wants the Trident for its vaguely-worded “power to control the seas.”

Where does the buck stop in Kumble saga? Agency | Mumbai

The BCCI is clearly dealing with a flawed contract with regards to the position of India’s national coach, given that it has to call for fresh applications for the role despite Anil Kumble doing phenomenally well. The BCCI, on Thursday, called for fresh applications for the position of coach for the national men’s team, allowed Kumble a direct entry into the process and announced that the three-member cricket advisory committee would look into the process of selecting India’s coach for the next term. The last time that the advisory committee came together to pick the national coach zeroing in on Kumble - the BCCI had prepared a contract that said the coach’s term would be for a period of one year, following which a fresh set of applications would be called for. Kumble’s contract ends

with the conclusion of the ICC Champions Trophy and stipulates - without any performance clause that the board has to call for applications once again. A top source in the Board administration told : “What can we do if the contract is drafted that way? Either there should been a longer term awarded to the coach or there should have been a performance-based clause. Now, if BCCI doesn’t follow that contract, they’ll be accused of not following what’s written in black and white. If they follow it, they’re accused of not being fair to Kumble.” His

‘demand’ for pay-hikes and his proposal that the coach should also be playing the role of a national selector notwithstanding, Kumble the coach has been tremendously successful with the Indian team. In the last one year, under Kumble, India has won everything there was to win - which included five Test series, a one-day series and a T20I series. So, how exactly is the advisory committee going to be comfortable looking at any other candidate except for the former legspinner, who has clearly been successful?

Champions Trophy 2017: India Take On New Zealand In Opening Warm-Up Agency | New Delhi

Premier off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin will be in focus alongside speedster Mohammed Shami when defending champions India take on New Zealand on Sunday in their opening warm-up game ahead of the Champions Trophy. After a hectic six weeks of Indian Premier League, the two warm-up games will help the ‘Men In Blue’ get back into the 50-over groove and the emphasis will be on team combination moving into the tournament-proper. India last played an ODI against England, back in January this year. Since the match doesn’t have official status, all 15 members in the squad will get a chance to play. All eyes will be on Ashwin as he is coming

will be a good opportunity for Ashwin to test his skills against the likes of Kane Williamson, Martin Guptill, and Tom Latham on a placid Oval track where 300 plus is considered to be a par score. Ashwin has not exactly had a great time in white ball cricket but the Tamil Nadu off-spinner had recently said that he is ready with a bagful of new tricks for the Champions Trophy.

remained the favourite in clinching his 10th title in Roland Garros. “I definitely see him as probably No. 1 favourite for this title,” commented the titleholder. World number one Andy Murray, positioned in the top half, expected a real challenge in as early as the third round, where he may face Argentine Juan Martin Del Potro. On the way to a possible semi-final with the 2015 champion Stan Wawrinka, the top seed could expect number 13 seed Tomas Berdych, German youngster Alexander Zverev or Japanese Kei Nishikori ahead.

Manchester City began their campaign to snatch the Premier League title from Chelsea next season when they signed Portuguese play-maker Bernardo Silva from French champions Monaco in a deal reported to be worth almost € 50 million (Rs 360 crore approximately) on Friday. Silva’s arrival, set for 1 July, is the first high-profile signing by City manager Pep Guardiola ahead of the 2017-18 campaign. City gave no indication of the length of Silva’s contract nor did they specify a fee, although British media reports suggested they had paid around £43 mil-

lion(Rs 360 crore approximately) for the 22-yearold. Manchester United were also said to be interested in signing Silva but it was the Etihad Stadium club he opted for after flying into Manchester Airport on Thursday. “It feels great. When you have the opportunity of being trained by Guardiola, you don’t say no. If not the best coach in the world, he is one of the best.As we all know, what he did in Barcelona and Bayern Munich was amazing and we expect also here that he will win titles. It’s great to be working with him and to have this opportunity,” added Silva, capped 12

times by Portugal. Silva started his career with Portuguese giants Benfica before moving to Monaco in 2014 on a season-long loan. But so impressive was his start to life in French football, the deal was made permanent six months in. Last season saw Silva score 10 goals in 51 appearances last season, and assist in the creation of a further 10, as Monaco won Ligue 1 and reached the semi-finals of the Champions League, having beaten Tottenham Hotspur, City and Germany’s Borussia Dortmund en route. “Muito Obrigado Bernardo... and Good Luck!,” said Monaco on their website.

So you are always a medal short and you will always find someone who takes it. “Who will get this medal? I have first to earn it, although you get a medal, loser or winner. It’s all instinctive. “I am not a back-looker. I am always forward. You come to my home you will be surprised. There is no trophy, no medal, nothing. “You would not even guess that I am a football manager. Apart from the fact that a football game

is on! “I am not separated from football. I am completely in football. I watch the game that is on on the night but I don’t look back what we have won, what we have done and all that, what we have lost.” Although the saga over Wenger’s contract, which is due to expire once the season is over, has yet to reach a conclusion, he has already indicated he will carry on in management even if he does leave Arsenal.A two-year extension that will keep him at the Emirates Stadium remains the most likely scenario. Wenger admit-

ted that once he retires he may start to view the past with more affection, however. “Maybe one day I will have to look back,” he said. “If I have health certainly no. It depends on my health. I will not always manage but I will always be involved in the game.” Chelsea’s relentless league form has made them strong favourites, especially as London rivals Arsenal are without key defenders. Laurent Koscielny is banned, fellow centre-back Gabriel injured and Shkodran Mustafi a concern because of the after effects of concussion.

Dholka farmer acquitted in power theft case

SS News | Ahmedabad

A rural court at the Mirzapur campus has acquitted a farmer from Dholka in an electricity theft case. When Valjibhai Manabhai Jadav was brought before the court for trial, the first issue came about his identity. The Gujarat Electricity Board police station at Sabarmati had registered the complaint in March 2007 against one Valjibhai Madhavbhai Jadav. The complaint was under the Electricity Act and Jadav came to be arrested in this case. He is a resident of Sindhrej village near Dholka. Jadav’s advocate Mohammed Hussain Shaikh objected to the investigation and defended on the ground that no independent witness was examined during the trial to establish the identity of

The prosecution could also not say how far the cables were from Jadav’s house. The investigators also could not ascertain before the court which material was seized from Jadav’s possession, advocate Shaikh said. The investigator’s callous approach also resulted in acquittal as the prosecution could not supply enough material before the court to show the house where the power was supplied.

State Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) registered an FIR against I I Shaikh, an inspector earlier working with state CID (crime), for allegedly demanding Rs 5 crore from an accused in Rs 190 crore VAT evasion scam registered in March 2016. Sources said that the FIR mentions a top IPS officer who was to get a part of the bribe. ACB officials said that the allegations are yet to be verified. According to ACB officials, the complaint has been filed by a representative of one of the accused based in Ahmedabad. Shaikh, investigating officer (IO) of the case, had approached the representative soon after the FIR was registered and had asked

him to come to CID’s office in Meghaninagar. The FIR mentioned that when the complainant went to the office on March 28, Shaikh had allegedly told him that he would not arrest the accused if they agree to pay Rs 5 crore. Shaikh mentioned that there is a lot of pressure from the IPS officer for the money. When the representative did not agree to pay, Shaikh persisted and called him repeatedly and also gave example of other accused of the same case who had allegedly already paid to evade arrest or further probe.

When the representative refused to pay, Shaikh threatened to get a warrant issued against the accused. When next meeting took place, he agreed at Rs 3 crore — Rs 1 crore for representative and Rs 1 crore each for himself and the IPS officer. By that time, the complainant had already started recording their conversations. The recordings mentioned Shaikh claiming that other accused had agreed for ‘setting’ and even suggested to the complainant that the accused has influential friends for whom Rs 2 crore is not a big amount. In the talks, he also mentioned that the other accused had willingly paid Rs 1.75 crore to a former IPS officer and a DSP-rank officer.

the upcoming monsoon session. CUTS International had made a representation to all the Rajya Sabha members in Delhi, ahead of the winter session pressing to pass the bill. George Cheriyan, director, CUTS International, highlighted that while India has only 2% of the global motor vehicle population, it accounts for more than 10% of road accidents in the world. “Every hour 57 accidents occur on Indian roads and 17 people lose their lives. As for Ahmedabad, over 65% of two-wheeler riders and 55% of car drivers have been found to be using mobile phones, texting and listening to

music while driving,” he said. Experts particularly emphasized on efficient road engineering. “There is need to prepare a master plan and use effective road engineering and scientific measures to ensure road safety,” said P K Sarkar, HoD, School of Planning & Architecture, New Delhi, citing examples from other countries. “Comprehensive road safety policies on key behavioural risk factors and their implementation can significantly improve road safety in India. Data and trends suggest that focusing on speeding, drunken driving, helmet, seat belt, and child safety systems can help reduce large number of road injuries and deaths,” said Nalin Sinha, India coordinator, Global Health Advocacy Incubator, who was also present at the meeting.
