In the first such strike in Punjab in eight years, three suspected Pakistan-based terrorists attacked a passenger bus and stormed a police station in Dinanagar early Monday, killing seven persons including an SP, before being gunned down after a 12-hour firefight. Director General of Police Sumedh Singh Saini said the terrorists, wearing combat fatigues, were carrying two GPS systems and hand grenades. Five bombs placed by the terrorists on the railway tracks were removed by a bomb disposal squad.

Yakub Memon deserves no compassion, 1993 blasts victims do
It was a Friday. As usual, Mumbai, then Bombay, was bustling with activities. But everything came to a standstill at 1.30 pm when the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) was hit by a powerful explosion. It was a car bomb that went off in the basement of the BSE building. More than 50 people were killed. Many more were injured. In total, there were 13 bomb explosions in the city, leaving 257 people dead and more than 700 injured. Zaveri Bazaar, Air India building, Hotel Sea Rock, Hotel Centaur, Hotel Airport Centaur, Katha Bazaar and the passport office were all hit. After 22 years of that bloodbath in Mumbai, one of the accused, Yakub Memon, was finally found guilty by the TADA court on April 29 and was sentenced to death. Last week, Memon, who is to be hanged on July 30, moved the Supreme Court and asked it to stop his execution on the ground that the death warrant issued by the lower court was illegal. The Supreme Court will hear the plea of the convict today. Earlier, a three-judge SC bench had rejected Memon’s curative petition, saying the grounds raised by him did not conform to the principles laid down by the apex court in 2002. The case has re-ignited a debate on capital punishment and there are many who have called the practice ‘barbaric’. Way back in 1978, Barrington Moore, an American sociologist, wrote a book Injustice in which he argued against capital punishment. Many here are demanding that the news of ‘hanging’ should not be publicised and the execution should be kept a secret till the job is done. But may I ask what kind of pain and anguish the families of those murdered must have gone through? What was the crime of those who were attacked? They were innocent people who had nothing to do with the demolition of the Babri masjid. The operation was financed by smugglers in Pakistan. Funds were provided by underworld kingpins. Logistics support was given by criminals in Bombay. The argument that Memon did not execute the attacks and that he did not have grenades and bombs in his hand does not hold water since he helped the planners execute the blasts. Instead of showing compassion for Memon, those who speak against his death sentence must show compassion for those who lost their own in the 1993 blasts. If Shah Rukh Khan is the aw-shucks boy-next-door Archie Andrews of Bollywood and Aamir Khan is the smarty pants Jughead, Salman Khan has built his career on being the affably brawny Big Moose. Shah Rukh might occasionally let off steam about being Muslim in India or at an American airport but Salman’s Muslim identity is safely restricted to that bumper Eid release. Aamir Khan is morphing into the nation’s carefully calibrated conscience keeper but Salman exists in a candy-coloured dreamworld where the Bajrangi is also Bhaijaan who flies kites with Narendra Modi while professing his love for Congress MP Priya Dutt. He has found his happy home in what is largely an opinion-free zone.

Though the doctor has advised Shamita to have complete best rest for two weeks to allow proper healing, she is continuing to perform despite the injury as she does not want to upset her supporters. Confirming the news, Shamita Shetty said, “Yes I have fractured my nasal bone but my performance is more important. The Gandhinagar resident has successfully designed an ‘AC sofa’ which will consume less electricity and be used outdoors as well. Patel was helped in his project by Ankit Vyas, an alumnus of National Institute of Design (NID). “I first thought of installing air-conditioner in a sofa in 2008 and started working on it. But the first sofa I made weighed around 175 kg, which was way too heavy. Then I heard of ‘Design Clinic Scheme’ of MSME min-

The Gujarat High Court on Monday adjourned the hearing on a petition challenging clean chit given to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and others in the 2002 riots case. The hearing was adjourned after petitioner Zakia Jafri’s lawyer sought time on the ground of submitting additional documents. The submission of Jafri’s lawyer MM Tirmizi was objected by Supreme Court appointed Special Investigation Team (SIT). The SIT said that court should not allow submission of any additional documents now since all the relevant materials related to the case have already been submitted. Following
this Justice Sonia Gokani asked Tirmizi that what additional documents he wants to submit as the case pertains to revision of lower court’s order and she will rely only on the documents which are part of the court. Tirmizi replied that his senior counsel wants to prepare a chart to brief the court. However following SIT objection Tirmizi didn’t press for it. Justice Gokani adjourned the hearing till August 4. SIT lawyers requested the court to conduct the matter on a daily basis. The court said it would decide on the next date.
