'Mann Ki Baat' : Modi, Obama talk about humble roots PM Narendra Modi shared a photo on Instagram of his with US President Barack Obama during the recording of the radio programme 'Mann ki Baat'. New Delhi Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Barack Obama bonded over their humble beginnings on a radio show aired on Tuesday, just after the American leader ended his New Delhi visit. Obama co-hosted Modi's monthly radio show as part of his packed threeday trip and took questions from listeners in a more informal setting after a series of official meetings and banquets. The leaders of the world's largest democracies spoke of their backgrounds and the vast opportunities that helped them rise to the top. "I think both of us have been blessed with extraordinary opportunity, coming from relatively humble beginnings," Obama said in answer to a question. "When I think about what's best in America and what's best in India, the notion that a tea seller or somebody who is born to a single mother, like me, could end up leading our countries is an extraordinary example of the opportunities that exist within our countries," he said. Modi added that he had never imagined holding

the country's top office "because, as Barack said, I came from a very humble background". As the son of a tea vendor, Modi's backstory is often compared to Obama's inspirational rise to become America's first black president. In the 30-minute prerecorded edition of 'Mann ki Baat' ('From the Heart'), Modi also praised the way Obama is raising his two

daughters calling it an "inspiration" for India where preferences to have sons has resulted in a wide gender gap. A newfound bonhomie between the two leaders was fully evident in Obama's latest visit, which saw bear hugs, first-name references, a new "friendship" pact, and even compliments on Modi's sense of fashion. Obama became the first

US president to be chief guest at India's Republic Day parade on Monday. The invitation to the annual celebration is one of the biggest honours the country can bestow on a foreign leader and underscores the importance that Modi places on US ties. PM Modi has been addressing the nation over radio every month since October 2014 through the

Colonel who received gallantry medal

on R-Day killed in J-K encounter Srinagar An army officer who was awarded a gallantry medal this Republic Day, a policeman and two Hizbul Mujahideen militants were killed in a fierce gunfight in Jammu and Kashmir ’s Pulwama district on Tuesday. Colonel Munindra Nath Rai, commanding officer of 42 Rashtriya Rifles, died in hospital after being hit by bullets at a village in Tral, 36 km from Srinagar. A policeman accompanying a search party was killed, too, as militants hiding in a house suddenly fired at them. Col Rai was among the gallantry medal awardees announced on the eve of Republic Day. He was awarded Yudh Seva medal for his role in a

gunbattle with militants in south Kashmir last year, an army spokesman said. Originally from the Gorkha Rifles, he was on “deputation”. The gunfight began when personnel of the 42 Rashtriya Rifles, police and the CRPF launched a joint operation following information that a local Hizbul militant along with an accomplice had come home. The militants started firing when the forces surrounded them, cutting down Col Rai and a police head constable. The forces cornered the militants after a while and gunned down Firdous Ahmed and Shiraz Ahmad, who were local recruits of the Hizbul, a police officer said. Arms and ammunition were

'Mann Ki Baat' programme and this would be the fourth address by him. The PM has used the programme to promote his Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, massive nationwide cleanliness drive, promise action against tax evasion, and raise awareness about drug abuse. Modi's high-octane communication strategy is at times compared with that of Obama's, who also makes a weekly radio address from White House. While Modi's radio talk has been a hit in terms of listenership, the one by Obama has faded into relative irrelevance, according to US media analysts 'Inspired by Benjamin Franklin' Modi said he was inspired

Gujarat govt cracks down on illegal shrimp farms on Aliya bet Bharuch Following the communal clashes at Hansot village two weeks ago and subsequent resignations of around 200 BJP workers, the district administration today initiated a massive demolition drive against illegal shrimp farming ponds in the area. These artificial ponds are located in Aliya Bet area, 20 km from Hansot, said officials. Local BJP leaders claim that they have become

dens of anti-social elements. Resident deputy collector of Bharuch B G Prajapati said these ponds are spread over 8,000 hectares of government land. “Today we sent three teams to Aliya Bet and have demolished at least 12 ponds so far. Tomas Berdych ends Rafael Nadal tyranny, Andy Murray charges on

Iron-willed Czech Tomas Berdych ended eight years of tyranny under nemesis Rafa Nadal to storm into the Australian Open semi-finals on Tuesday before his next opponent Andy Murray restored British colonial rule to the floodlit centre court.Maria Sharapova inflicted another grand slam reality check on Eugenie Bouchard and will play an all-Russian semi-final with plucky lefthander Ekaterina Makaraova, who thrashed third seed Simona Halep

on a surprising day at Melbourne Park. In the evening session, Murray struck back for the old guard, slapping down local teenager Nick Kyrgios 6-3 7-6(5) 6-3 to deflate home fans pumped up by the traditional sporting rivalry with former colonial masters Britain. But it was Nadal's 6-2 6-0 7-6(5) humbling on an unseasonably cold summer's day that rocked Melbourne Park to its core and shook the biggest monkey in the men's game off the back of Berdych.

Chai and Chi Pe Charcha...! I also want to thank you for not making me dance again,” said the first American president at the Republic Day parade, and the first to visit India twice while in office. Amid the multiple bear hugs and the shock of hearing Prime Minister Narendra Modi break out in English, prompting his own hidden reserves of Hindi in response, surely President Barack Obama had missed the exquisite choreography marking The Visit. Every step and rhythm had been worked to perfection: the son of the chaiwallah pouring the president’s chai, photographs of the bro-stroll around the stately paths of Hyderabad House, the mouth-watering menu of mustard fish curry, gushtaba, and achari paneer, the unprecedented two hours of sitting out in the open on Rajpath causing the biggest security headache in the history of the Secret Service, the parade comprising Russian-made MI-35 helicopters overhead and Russian-made T-90 tanks rumbling down the rainy majestic boulevard, barely hours after the US was all set to make sure that future parades of armaments will be vastly more American-made. A lame-duck US president usually has few friends left in Washington DC, and even fewer in other nations’ capitals. But in New Delhi, he seemed to have finally found a dance partner: the Barry and Narry duo were in sync and barely missed a step. Mind you, the dance of diplomacy should not be taken lightly. It is time the two countries put the embarrassment of Khobragate behind them and got serious about the real pain points for Obama’s foreign policy: the triumvirate of China, Russia, Pakistan. It is time to finally recognise that befriending India is a diplomatic hat-trick: a single ally to counterbalance all three annoyances. For this alone, the chai, the chacha-cha and the rest of the hoopla was worth it. Obama missed an essential truth: that you can never escape song and dance numbers, central to any Indian production. Obama also seemed to have missed the fact that he had deftly danced around three big issues: earth, wind and fire. The earth is getting hotter — 2014 was the warmest year on record, a timely reminder to get down to the upcoming climate talks in Paris later this year. India is already a heavy-hitter in this area. While it ranks third in the world in greenhouse gas emissions, its rate of increase is on track to ensure that India will overtake China and the US. On other measures, India is not waiting in third place. Delhi already leads the world’s cities in the airborne particulate matter, PM2.5, considered most harmful to health, with Patna in hot pursuit as number two. Delhi and Patna’s levels of particulate matter are six times World Health Organisationmandated safe limits. Half of the top 20 cities in the world with the highest levels of PM2.5 were in India.

Brain’s on-off thirst switch identified

Scientists have identified neurons that trigger our sense of thirst and those that turn it off. For years, researchers have suspected that thirst is regulated by neurons in the subfornical organ (SFO), in the hypothalamus. But it has been difficult to pinpoint exactly which neurons are involved. “When researchers used electrical current to stimulate different parts of the SFO of mice, they got confusing results,” said lead author Yuki Oka, a postdoctoral research

scientist in the laboratory of Charles S Zuker, a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator at Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC). The CUMC team hypothesised that there are at least two types of neurons in the SFO, including ones that drive thirst and others that suppress it. “Those electrostimulation experiments were probably activating both types of neurons at once, so they were bound to get conflicting results,” said Oka.

BJP counters Rahul Gandhi: It's not PR, it's Modi's pyaar The BJP on Tuesday attacked Congress vicepresident Rahul Gandhi for accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi of running a personal Public Relations (PR) campaign through state events like the Republic Day. "Since May, the NDA government is at the Centre and the Prime Minister is busy doing PR. The PM is indulging in PR stunts. There hasn't been a single concrete result and people are asking, when will the talk stop and work begin?" Rahul said as he finally made an appearance by holding a rally in pollbound Delhi, which will vote for a new Assembly

on February 7. "This government is only for a few industrialists while the Congress is for the poor and we will come back on this plank," the Congress leader added. His party was voted out of power in 2013 after a 15year run in the national capital under Sheila

Dikshit's leadership. "Modiji PR nahi kar rahe, janta se pyaar kar rahe hain (Modiji is not doing any PR, he loves the countrymen)," BJP spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain said. Modi is scheduled to address four more rallies in Delhi this week.

It is expected to be the last major anniversary event survivors are able to attend in considerable numbers. Heads of state and representatives from wartime Allies will also be present. Events include the laying of a wreath, a church service and the lighting of candles at a memorial in the former death camp of Birkenau, which was part of the Auschwitz

Renee Salt, 85, from north London, is among the survivors travelling to T u e s d a y ' s commemoration. She visited the camp for the first time 10 years ago and "buried the ghosts", she told the BBC, and has been going back ever since. "I'll do it for as long as I can. Why? The general assumption is that the Fed will acknowledge the uncertain global outlook and stick to its promise to be patient on monetary tightening. Yet, its timetable remains for liftoff on rates by mid-year, a trajectory that presages further broad-based gains for the dollar, Reuters reported.

SPORTS ROUND Rain gods hand India a lifeline as fifth ODI gets washed out Rain played spoilsport as the tri-series cricket match between India and Australia was today abandoned with the two teams sharing the points, which left the visiting side in with a chance to make it to the final. After being put into bat, India were 69 for two after 16 overs when play was stopped due to rain at 5pm local time (11:30 IST) and after a wait of three hours the umpires decided to call off the match. The two teams take two points each from today's match, which means that the final league game between India and England on January 30 at the WACA in Perth will be a straight knockout for a chance to play Australia in the final on February 1 at the same venue. Unbeaten Australia, who have 15 points after today's no result, have

already qualified for the final while winless India and England have two and five points respectively. A team gets four points for a win. India had lost to Australia and England in their firstleg matches of the double round robin format tournament. The start of the match was delayed by 40 minutes due to drizzle since morning and there was first rain interruption at 3:30 pm local time (10 am IST)

when India were six for no loss in 2.4 overs. Play resumed with India losing the struggling Shikhar Dhawan for eight in the seventh over and then Ambati Rayudu for 23 in the 13th over. Dhawan was caught by Aaron Finch at slips off the bowling of Mitchell Starc as the Indian opener dabbed at a delivery that bounced a bit extra from a good length just outside the off-stump without any movement of his feet.

Scientists manage to 'UNBOIL' an egg Chemical process to untangle proteins could lead to cheaper cancer treatments

Scientists have proved that it’s possible to unboil an egg using chemicals. They added urea to a hardboiled egg to break down proteins and return it to its liquid form, before using a machine to reassemble the broken pieces. The experts say their discovery could one day reduce the cost of cancer treatment, as well as making cheese, for example. When an egg is boiled, proteins in the egg white tangle together to form a solid. Now, chemists from the University of California Irvine and the University of Western Australia, have proved the process is reversible, if urea is added. ‘Yes, we have invented a way to unboil a hen egg,’ said Professor Gregory Weiss, a biochemist at UC Irvine. ‘In our paper, we describe a device for pulling apart tangled proteins and

allowing them to refold.’ His team boiled egg whites for 20 minutes at 90°C (194°F). They then added a urea substance that ‘chews away at the whites’ to liquefy the solid material and break down proteins. Urea is a chemical compound found in urine, although it is also made artificially too.

However, the protein ‘bits’ are still tangled and unusable at this point, so the scientists poured the liquid solution into a ‘vortex fluid device’. The machine applies stress to the tiny pieces, forcing them back to their untangled, original form. It is not known whether the egg is edible after being 'unboiled'.

Rahul praises Hindu widow who risked her life to save 10 Muslims in Muzaffarpur riots

Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi has sent a congratulatory message to Shail Devi - a Hindu woman belonging to an economically backward family - for saving the lives of 10 Muslims during the recent communal clashes in Bihar’s Muzaffarpur district. “You emerged as a ray of hope and stood firm during the riots,” Rahul said in the letter he wrote to Devi on January 23. Devi, a widow in her early 50s, gave shelter to Muslim neighbours by risking her life

when a mob of more than 5,000 people attacked Azizpur Bahilwara village after a 20-year-old Hindu boy was found dead on January 18. She was later felicitated by Bihar Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi. Rahul used the opportunity to take a dig at the BJP, which rules the Centre, without naming the saffron outfit that is believed to be behind the riots. The BJP was part of the Janata Dal-Unitedled coalition government in Bihar till 2013.
