Having portrayed more of a spontaneous romantic hero on screen, actor Emraan Hashmi says his brand of romance is different from that of Shah Rukh Khan. When asked to define his ‘brand of romance’, Emraan said in a lighter vein, “In a SRK film, to culminate the love it takes two hours... In my film it takes two minutes. In his films, it takes time to get the girl while in films there is no waiting around.”

Congress chief Sonia Gandhi and senior leader Manmohan Singh discussed the introduction of a new goods and services tax (GST) with Prime Minister Narendra Modi over tea on Friday in an apparent thaw in relations between the government and the principal Oppo-

sition party. The meeting between the rivals was the first since Modi stormed to power 18 months ago, and was expected to herald a long-awaited compromise on the proposed GST, billed as the biggest tax reform since independence. The Congress called the meeting constructive. “It has been a constructive engagement

and it will be a work in progress,” Congress spokesperson Anand Sharma said after the meet. “PM Modi invited Sonia ji and Manmohan ji to discuss various issues related to the winter session,” finance minister Arun Jaitley, who was also present at the meeting, said. “There was also discussion on the GST

Emergency supporters now talking about constitutionality: Jaitley Agency | New Delhi

Finance minister Arun Jaitley hit out at the Congress on Friday for imposing the Emergency that endangered people’s right to life and liberty and swept aside charges of rising intolerance in the country. Speaking on the second day of Parliament’s winter session, Jaitley said the biggest challenge before the country was the suspension of Article 21 of the Constitution -- the provision that gave people the right to life and liberty -- a reference to the Emergency imposed by then Congress prime minister Indira Gandhi. “Today if someone comes on TV and gives an irresponsible statement, it is called intolerance. Earlier, people’s life were being taken away illegally -- of course there’s no comparison, it’s like

bill. The Congress leaders gave their suggestions and we also told them our opinion,” he said. “The Congress leaders will discuss (the issue) within the party and will contact the government. There is also a possibility that we may

meet again,” Jaitley added. Barely an hour before the meeting, the Prime Minister praised Jawaharlal Nehru, declared he wants Parliament to run on the basis of consensus and acknowledged the role of “all previous

governments”, pulling all stops to woo the principal opposition party. His unprecedented approach to reach out to the Opposition comes amid the NDA government’s urgency to push GST bill and other reforms. Replying to the

debate to commemorate Constitution Day and BR Ambedkar’s 125th birth anniversary, Modi said: “Building consensus is more important than majority rule. In a democracy more strength lies in walking on the path towards agreement. Taking decision through a majority-rule should only be the last effort. But before such situation arrives, consultations must be held.” He had often been targeted by his political opponents for trying to undermine the legacy of Congress prime ministers. On Friday, Modi spoke about a debate where socialist leader Ram Manohar Lohia argued on an issue with facts and figures. “Nehru was such a great man, he stood up and agreed to what Lohia said,” Modi said. Even as Modi’s invitation to the Congress president for negotiations is seen as a major step to reach out to the Opposition, party vice-president Rahul Gandhi maintained that the meeting was called “under public pressure”.

Modi’s successes on foreign soil but forlorn at home

By all accounts, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Singapore visit has been a resounding success. His oration in English, before a packed audience at Singapore’s celebrated Shangri La Hotel, drew a standing ovation. The audience comprised leading members of the corporate world, media and government, including PM Lee Hsien Loong and others cabinet members. The rousing address in Hindi the next day, to a massive gathering of the Indian diaspora, was the very embodiment of charisma at play. The harvest has been rich. The takeaway includes the elevation of Singapore-India relations to a strategic partnership. Other key results encompass the opportunity for Singapore’s Changi airport — a veritable global hub — to run two airports in India, and for India to pick Singapore as a financial centre to launch rupee bonds. Modi’s achievements abroad appear to cut little ice back home. Coming shortly after similarly successful visits to the UK and Malaysia, the Singapore stint has kept to the pattern: Modi-mania abroad parallels Modi-bashing at home. The trickle of award wapsi that started after the Delhi assembly election debacle has turned into a flood before the Bihar verdict. The desertion of the intelligentsia has kept pace with the mobilisation of the political opposition into a grand coalition, taking personally on the PM, who appears increasingly on the defensive. How forlorn Modi looked on the day after his return from the triumphant visit when he made a brief appearance at the all-party meeting hosted by Parliamentary Affairs Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu, seeking support for the GST “in the interest of the nation”! The winter session of Parliament promises to be stormy. The opposition, having tasted blood in Bihar, is closing ranks, targeting the government on a range of issues calculated to do maximum political damage. The hiatus between the images of Modi abroad and the chorus of negativity at home has ominous implications for India’s government, opposition and the credibility of India as a business partner. A leader whose legitimacy comes from support abroad can get cut off from the political roots at home that gave him legitimacy in the first place. An opposition that draws its strength entirely from ganging up on an isolated leader can deflect attention from the essential core of the “Idea of India”, the imperative for reform, and the general credibility of India in the global arena. The gap between the images abroad and at home and the slippage over the last 18 months deserve careful attention. Leaders are not born; they are made.

Mockingjay 2 review: Hunger Bipasha Basu has a freak accident, burns face and arms Games meets a boring end Agency | New Delhi

Agency | New Delhi Looking pretty can be a tricky business. And who would know it better than an actor. Bipasha Basu had a freak accident while on a shoot recently, thanks to a clumsy hair stylist. The Raaz actor tweeted on Wednesday about how a very clumsy and inattentive hair designer dropped hot hair tongs on her, caus-

ing multiple burns on her face and arms. She posted pictures with her tweet. She wrote, “Started my day of shoot with multiple burns on my face and hands by a hairstylist. She dropped the tong on me and did not even flinch.” However, the tweet or the pictures are not available on the social networking site anymore. Later, she posted a separate photo

on Instagram on Thursday where she is holding a mirror against her face to protect herself as a different hair designer is attending to her. She captioned this photo as, “Post this careless accident, see my way of protecting myself from the mighty tong! Am well and working. Scars will take a while to go. FYI this is not the same stylist.”

Shilpa Shetty-Raj Kundra launch ‘Viaan Mobiles’, named after son

The persona of Katniss Everdeen – an equal part mix of Jennifer Lawrence’s magnetic presence and the character’s inherent humanity – has transcended the Hunger Games franchise. As this dystopian Young Adult franchise splutters and gasps before reaching the finishing line, Jennifer Lawrence and her characters stand tall as beacons, telling us that however bad this film may be, we still have Katniss. As the war with the Capitol and its stylishly tyrannical President Snow (Donald Sutherland) rages, Katniss’ own people start forgetting what they are fighting for. With victory in sight, humanity is cast aside. In such a scenario, Katniss’ role as the franchise’s emotional and moral heart is even more pronounced, and Lawrence delivers. She is vulnerable and determined

at the same time, coming into her own as she leaves behind the icon’s role District 13’s President Coin (Julianne Moore) is trying to force on her. She may be a heroine to Panem’s rebels but she is fleshand-blood, never buying into the hoopla of being the Mockingjay. But take her away and what are we left with? An uneven film so boring, it may put you to sleep. One would have thought that after splitting the last book into two (a la Harry Potter), the second part would begin with an action extravaganza. No

such luck though. The film begins tamely with a lot of speeches and discussions, camera hanging on to the character’s faces for a breath too long. Angered by how Snow has destroyed Peeta (Josh Hutcherson), Katniss has only one aim in life – to kill the President and he should be able to see her eyes when she strikes the final blow. However, Coin is having none of it. She wants Katniss to be the face of her rebellion but it will be the army of the districts who will do the real work.

won’t, because you know, we are in this make-believe la-la land where we won’t reveal our real selves? Got it? No? Good, because I didn’t either. Ved ( Ranbir) and Tara ( Deepika) swan around cluelessly and uselessly in the first hour of the film, and you wonder just how much more of waste it can get . And then, surprise, it gets better, and so do they. And ‘Tamasha’ becomes, somewhat, the film you presume Ali and his actors had set out to make. Turns out that the obedient, well-behaved boy that Ved used to be has grown into the obedient, well-behaved young adult, but not in any way that does him any good. A demanding father sets Ved upon a path not of his own choosing, and the break-through comes

when he meets the girl : the cocoon shatters, and the real Ved emerges, putting his yes-sir, no-sir, three-bags-full-sir robotic existence behind him, coming out into a world of light and imagination and magic. Ved loves being told stories. He discovers he loves telling stories as much. When the director delves deep into this groove, he mines something solid and yes, I will use that word again, real. Those are the moments that make this film shine, and leave you smiling. It’s interesting how accepting that make-believe can set you free sets both the director and the actor free : there are flashes here of the terrific actor that Ranbir can be, and that’s a relief both for the performer as well as the audience.

Men in Black 4 to have a Woman in Black

Agency | Los Angeles Men in Black 4 will have a “prominent Woman in Black”, says producer. According to BBC, producer Laurie MacDonald promises that “there will be a prominent Woman in Black in the fourth (film)”, which she’s developing with husband Walter Parkes. While 1997’s Men in Black seemingly inducted Linda Fiorentino’s character into the agency at the end of the film, she was absent from the two sequels. Men in Black

II featured Lara Flynn Boyle as the villainous Serleena, but the franchise has yet to have a female agent take a lead role. Original franchise star Will Smith is currently not attached to the project, but Parkes said the actor could be lured back, telling the BBC: “Never count Will out.” The original movies centred on Smith’s Agent J and his alien-hunting partner K (Tommy Lee Jones) as they tracked down aliens on the Earth and tried to keep their existence hidden from civilians.

Agency | Mumbai Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty and her businessman husband Raj Kundra on Wednesday launched Viaan Mobiles, named for their three-year-old son. Five variants of the mobile phones, which come with a special personalised service, are priced between Rs 849 to Rs 12,999. The phones were launched at a ceremony held here with

celebrity guests Malaika Arora Khan, Farah Khan, Manish Paul and Jeetendra in attendance. “The stats say that India happens to be the second-largest consumer of mobile phones. And that was the deal-clincher for us to even make a foray here. I’ve also heard that we buy around 2 crore phones in a month in just India and 80 percent of those phones are below

Rs 10,000,” Shilpa said at the event. “And we cater to that market. I think even if we are able to conquer around 2-3 per cent, which is about 5 lakh mobiles in a month, we’ll be home and that’s what we’ve stepped out to do,” she added. Raj Kundra told media, “For us in India, the choice was mass or class and we decided with Viaan to bring the class to the mass.”

There was a time when the Punjabi film industry languished in Bollywood’s shadow. Not any longer. Agency | New Delhi Just short of an hour into the film, I was up to there with ‘Tamasha’. All we’d got till then was scene after pretty scene in Corsica – picturesque bistros, colourful locals in fancy dress, leafy green countryside, sparkling blue waters, and two of the most interesting actors in Bollywood desperately acting out their parts : over-emphasising their meet-cute, making eyes and coming hither. To absolutely no effect. No impact. Zero. Nada. Can you imagine getting Ranbir and Deepika and not letting them fall into a real, true, passionate twosome, because the writing in this initial part of the film forces them into an annoyingly artificial construct : we know we are combustible, but we

SPORTS ROUNDUP 3rd Test: India end South Africa’s unbeaten 9-year overseas run with 124-run win, seal series 2-0

Another Black Friday cell phone deal is the Acer Liquid M220 Windows 8.1 Smartphone in black. Astoria differs from the other three projects in that it functions as an emulator - a subsystem within the phone running Android alongside Windows 10. Is this smartphone here to steal pocket space from Android and iPhone users? In fact, Microsoft has just announced a new mobile phone for emerging countries. What it’s not gone for is high quality.

Oil imports rising despite plans to up domestic output: IEA

Agency | Melbourne Cricket has changed, not just in Australia but around the world, in the 12 months since Phil Hughes was felled by a rising delivery that ultimately led to his death. Hughes, who played 26 Test matches for Australia, died three days short of his 26th birthday of a brain haemorrhage on November 27 last year, two days after he was struck under the rear of his batting helmet by a short-pitch ball while playing for South Australia against New

South Wales at the Sydney Cricket Ground. His death stunned the international cricket community, causing an outpouring of grief from players, officials and from the general public — tens of thousands of fans around Australia showed solidarity in mourning by putting their cricket bats on display outside their homes as a tribute. While new safety measures such as improved batting helmets are the obvious legacy of Hughes’ passing, others are more subtle but affect

the very manner in which the game is now played. Fast bowlers, by and large, tend no longer to aim to intimidate batsmen with head-high bouncers, and spectators no longer rejoice in pacemen serving up “chin music” or cheer when a batsman is hit. Recently retired strike bowler Mitchell Johnson, one of cricket’s most feared pacemen, told Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) television that Hughes’ death made him question the way he played the game.

Looking forward to IPTL 2: Mahesh Bhupathi Agency | New Delhi India’s reliance on foreign oil will jump from 80 percent to 90 percent by 2040 and it would lead global energy demand growth, the International Energy Agency said in a report on the world’s third largest energy consumer released in New Delhi on Friday. “India is set to contribute more than any other country to the rise in global energy demand over the next 25 years, underlining its ever-greater influence in Asia and on the world stage,” the report said. As a consequence India’s economy will remain vulnerable to oil price volatility and political turbulence in oil and gas producing countries. IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol said the think-tank expects global oil prices to hit levels of around USD 80 per barrel by 2020. Brent crude weakened to USD 45.17 per barrel on Friday.

India is under threat from cyber criminals: Security firm Kaspersky

Agency | New Delhi India is increasingly on the radar of cybercriminals from countries like China, Russia and the US, who are using advanced persistent threat (APT) attacks to steal data from consumers and enterprises, security software firm Kaspersky said. APT refers to a format where the attacker gains access to a network/device and stays there undetected for a long period of time. The motive of the attack is to steal data and there is a longer term damage to the organisation/user. “APT attacks are on the rise globally and those affecting India are also growing. These attacks are originating from China, the US and Russia among other countries. A major chunk of the attacks like Equation, Turla, Darkhotel, Regin, Cloud Atlas infected India as well,” Kaspersky Lab Deputy Director Global Research and Analysis Team Sergey Novikov told reporters here. He added that while there were three APT announcements in 2012, the number grew to seven in 2013, 11 in 2014 and 10 in the first half of 2015. “As more and more devices get connected to the Internet/network, the level of sophistication of these attacks is also on the rise,” he said.

Agency | Nagpur Ravichandran Ashwin displayed his magic yet again to record a career-best figures of 7/66 as India clinched the four-match series against South Africa by taking an unassailable 2-0 lead with an emphatic 124-run win in the third cricket Test. Spinning a web of deceit, Ashwin had a superb match haul of 12 for 98, while leg spinner Amit Mishra claimed 3 for 51 as the hosts shot out the visitors for 185 in 89.5 overs

in the second innings to wrap up the match 52 minutes after the tea session. This was also Virat Kohli’s first Test series win as a captain on home soil and also marked an end to South Africa’s track record of not losing a Test series away from home for nine long years. South Africa needed to score 310 to score for a series- levelling win but woefully fell short of the target, unable to negotiate the Indian spin threat led by 29-year-old Ashwin

who completed his 4th 10-wicket haul in a match in his 31st Test. Ashwin’s second innings victims included three left- handers the opening duo of Dean Elgar, Stiaan van Zyl and Jean-Paul Duminy apart from the prize wicket of AB de Villiers, the visitors’ most successful batsman on this visit. He fittingly took the last wicket, by clean bowling last man Morne Morkel through the gate in his final devastating spell of 4 for 16 in 19 balls.

Gujarat Panchayat polls: Women candidates step out to campaign, in the shadow of men in family Correspondent | Vadodara

On a hot Wednesday morning, a day after unseasonal heavy rain in various parts of Vadodara, Nipa Patel, BJP candidate for a Dashrath district panchayat seat, makes her way through the muck and dung on the concrete path of Sukhlipura, a Kshatriya-dominated village. There are 10 villages under Dashrath district panchayat. A first-time candidate, 33-year-old Nipa’s campaign is led by her brother-in-law, Kalpesh Patel, former sarpanch of Dashrath village. When the seat of sarpanch was reserved for women, it was Kalpesh’s wife who took over. “Intolerance, by and large, is not an issue of law. It’s a political one,” said Gujarat Lokayukta Justice (retired) D P Buch on Thursday on the sidelines of a lecture organised by United World School of Law at Uvarsad village in Gandhinagar. The lecture was organised by the institute on the “Importance of Rule of Law in Civilised Society” to celebrate the Constitution Day. Incidentally, United World School of Law is headed by former trial judge of 2002 Naroda Patiya Massacre Case, Jyotsana Yagnik. After delivering his lecture, when the Lokayukta was asked to about the

ongoing controversy over “growing intolerance” in India, Justice Buch said, “It’s not related to the (rule of) law, it’s political. By and large, intolerance is not an issue of law, at present, according to me. And I would not enter into that, sorry.” Interestingly, the appointment of Justice Buch as the Lokayukta of Gujarat was preceded by a high-voltage constitutional fight between Gujarat Government, led by the then Chief Minister Narendra Modi, and the then Governor of Gujarat, Kamla Beniwal. Beniwal had appointed Justice (retd) R A Mehta as the Lokayukta of Gujarat against the wish of the State Cabinet, then led by Modi.

This was part of her classroom lecture to Harvard students over Skype, conducted earlier this week. This was the first such experiment when the women leaders from SEWA’s health cooperatives, who deliver primary healthcare to their communities, gave lessons on public health, to Harvard School of Public Health’s Masters-level students. What

began as a case study called “SEWA – a Sisterhood dedicated to change”, based on interviews of Pathan, Parmar and Patel, who are grassroots-level health workers of Lok Swasthya Health Cooperatives at SEWA, culminated in a freewheeling discussion where the women shared their stories with a class of 25 students that included lawyers, doctors, nurses, PhD scholars, gynaecologists, among others, who are pursuing Masters in Public Health.
