‘Love jihad’: Supreme Court to hear on January 2 pleas challenging state laws regulating inter-faith marriages Agency News: New Delhi Amidst the renewed debate on “love jihad”, the Supreme Court is scheduled to hear on January 2 a batch of pleas challenging controversial state laws regulating religious conversions due to interfaith marriage. A bench of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justice PS Narasimha is scheduled to hear the PILs filed by advocate Vishal Thakre and an NGO ‘Citizens for Justice and Peace’. Recently after the heinous murder of Shraddha Walkar in Delhi, the discussion on “love jihad” was renewed. This led to demands by a few groups for the same law in Maharashtra like Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and a few other states. Maharashtra deputy chief minister Devendra Fadnavis had said that the state government will study the laws by

other states and bring the law. He also said that the state is ready to enact the law. The recent suicide of actress Tunisha Sharma has also given the impetus to the demand in the state. The Supreme Court will also hear a plea by Muslim body ‘Jamiat Ulama-I-Hind’ which it had allowed last year to become a party to the petitions as it claimed a large number of Muslims are being harassed under these laws across the country. As per the office report uploaded on the apex court website, so far no reply has been filed by the Centre or any of the states which have been made parties to the litigation.

Amid a renewed attack mounted by the government on the collegium system of appointing members to the higher judiciary, a “record” 138 judges were appointed to the various high courts this year. Law Minister Kiren Rijiju, who has been questioning the collegium system, dubbed it as being “alien” to the Constitution. He also said that the issue of vacancies and appointments in the higher judiciary would continue to linger till such time a new system is created for the same. Seeking to

overturn the collegium system, Parliament had passed - with near unanimity - the National Judicial Appointments Commission Act which was given constitutional status. The government brought into force the Constitution (Ninety-Ninth Amendment) Act, 2014 and the National Judicial Appointments Commission Act, 2014 on April 13, 2015. However, both the Acts were challenged in the Supreme Court which eventually declared both the laws as unconstitutional and void on October 16, 2015. The Calcutta High Court recently ruled that depriving a woman of her stridhan or any other economic or financial resources to which she is entitled constitutes domestic violence under the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence (PWDV) Act, 2005. Justice Subhendu Samanta observed, “The deprivation of petitioner to any economic or financial resources to which the aggrieved person is entitled under any law is also domestic violence. In this case, it is the fact that the petitioner was deprived of her stridhan articles for a long which were under the custody of the opposite parties. This fact is tantamount to Domestic Violence”. The single-judge bench was hearing a plea by a

widow, Nandita Sarkar, seeking monetary relief, including compensation from her in-laws. Nandita filed the plea against the order and judgment of April 17, 2018, passed by the Trial Court, Howrah. KP Oli’s coup against Deuba brings comrades to power in Nepal. India still holds many cards

On Sunday in Nepal, former Communist comrades-turnedbitter political foes-turned-allies again joined hands to lead a new government, with master political puppeteer and former prime minister K.P. Sharma Oli agreeing to support Maoist leader Pushpa Kamal Dahal in the race to become the Himalayan republic’s newest prime minister. Oli’s move stunned Nepal as well as the neighbourhood, but Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi recovered well and became the first international leader to congratulate Dahal, better known by his alias Prachanda. The US and Pakistan have since followed suit. Since no political party got a majority in the recently held elections in Nepal, it was widely believed that the pre-poll political arrangement led by Nepali Congress’ Sher Bahadur Deuba – in which Prachanda was a key ally – would pull off the match. But few had reckoned with Oli. He fought the election in opposition to Deuba and the Nepali Congress. His own differences with Prachanda are well known – in 2021, Prachanda quit the alliance with Oli because the latter didn’t make him prime minister as he had promised. Well, Oli now seems to have had the last laugh. He promised Prachanda PM-ship for the first half of the five-year term as well as one deputy PM post out of three. Oli’s party, the United Marxist-Leninist (UML), will claim the post of the Speaker as well as the President. Deuba, supported by New Delhi in this gamble for power, has lost. He thought he could outsmart Prachanda – and so he refused his request to become PM for the first half of the five-year term, but agreed to let him be PM for the second half of the term. Clearly, Prachanda had greater ambitions. Now Deuba has to eat humble pie. Oli, who knew he wouldn’t have become PM if Deuba-Prachanda had shared the spoils for the next five years, decided to humiliate Deuba. He has properly - Kapilkumar M. Hirpara succeeded in doing so.

HC refuses to extend stay on ex-Maha minister Anil Deshmukh’s bail Agency News: Mumbai Former Maharashtra home minister Anil Deshmukh is likely to walk out of jail on Wednesday as the Bombay High Court on Tuesday refused to extend its stay on an order granting him bail in a corruption case registered by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Justice M S Karnik had granted bail to the 73-year-old Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader on December 12, but stayed the order for 10 days as the CBI sought time to challenge it in the Supreme Court. The probe agency moved the apex court but the appeal would be heard only in January 2023 as the court is closed for vacation. Last week, the high court had extended the stay till December 27 on the CBI’s request. On Tuesday, the central agency sought another extension. Deshmukh’s lawyers Aniket Nikam and Inderpal Singh claimed that the CBI was trying to “overreach” the earlier order of the HC which had stated that under no circumstances another

extension will be granted. “They are failing to make out any urgency in the Supreme Court, and coming here seeking stay. This cannot be permitted,” Nikam argued. The vacation bench of the High Court, after hearing the arguments, said that “no further extension can be granted”. With the court refusing to extend the stay, Deshmukh could be released on bail on Wednesday, his lawyers told. The high court, while granting bail to Deshmukh, had noted that except for dismissed police officer Sachin Waze’s statement, no testimony recorded by the CBI indicated that money was being extorted from bar owners in Mumbai at the behest of the NCP leader.

UP: High Court Allows Local Polls Covid an Excuse to Stop Bharat Jodo Yatra: Venugopal Without OBC Reservation; CM Yogi Agency News: Srinagar The Congress on Tuesday charged that the Government was using Covid as an excuse to stop the Bharat Jodo Yatra as the long march spearheaded by Rahul Gandhi was gaining momentum every passing day. “We are very much concerned about the health of the people of this country and the Covid situation as well. This entire drama is created to stop the Bharat Jodo Yatra,” AICC general secretary K C Venugopal told. Venugopal, who was here to review the preparations for the Jammu and Kashmir leg of the yatra, said Prime Minister Narendra Modi was attending public meetings and flights were coming in even from China. “Flights are coming from China, there is no problem. There is no national level (Covid) protocol suggested by the World Health Organisation (WHO). The PM is attending public meetings and all

other government programmes are happening everywhere… there is no problem,” he added. He said why was the government only writing letter to Rahul Gandhi while other programmes are going on without any fuss. “There is a ’mela’ going on Gujarat, there is no problem with that. We will follow the protocol – recommended by the experts — when it is issued by the government,” he said. Venugopal said he was satisfied with the preparations for the yatra in Jammu and Kashmir.

‘Joint Initiative’ to Defeat BJP at Final Stage, Claims Tripura CPI(M) Agency News: Agartala

The ‘joint initiative’ of the CPI(M) to bring all secular and democratic forces ahead of the Assembly elections in Tripura to defeat the BJP has reached its final stage, the Left party’s state secretary Jitendra Choudhury claimed on Tuesday. However, Choudhury did not name the parties that will be associated with the CPI(M)’s move. “Details of the joint initiative will be made known very shortly. It is aimed at defeating the BJP in the Assembly elections due in February,” he told. But, the senior leader said, the initiative should not be considered as political adjustment or alignment. “For the CPI(M), win or defeat in elections doesn’t matter much. We are working hard to restore democracy in the state where democratic values have been throttled in the past 58 months of BJP rule,” Choudhury said.

Court verdict comes on the back of PILs challenging the preparation of the OBC reservation draft without following the triple test formula prescribed by the Supreme Court Agency News: Lucknow

Quashing the Uttar Pradesh government’s draft notification, the Lucknow bench of Allahabad High Court on Tuesday ordered holding the urban local body elections without reservation for the OBCs (Other Backward Classes). However, Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath said that the state government will provide reservation in urban body general elections to OBCs on the basis of triple test by setting up a commission. The division bench of Justice DK Upadhyay and Justice Saurav Lavania, which passed

the verdict, annulled the draft notification issued by the Uttar Pradesh government on December 5 for reservation of OBCs in the urban local body elections. The verdict comes over PILs challenging the preparation of the OBC reservation draft without following the triple test formula prescribed by the Supreme Court. The petitioners had pleaded that the state government must follow the apex court formula and constitute a dedicated commission to study the political backwardness of OBCs before fixing the reservation. The state government pleaded that it had conducted a rapid survey and said it was as good as the triple test formula. Adityanath said if needed the state government will also appeal in the Supreme Court against High Court verdict.

Ankita Bhandari was allegedly murdered by the owner of the Vanantara resort Pulkit Arya and his two accomplices after she resisted being pressured into offering extra services to a VIP guest Agency News: Dehradun

Congress leader and former chief minister Harish Rawat staged a dharna here, demanding a CBI probe into the Ankita Bhandari murder case. Expressing dissatisfaction over the ongoing SIT probe into the resort receptionist’s murder, Rawat alleged that a VIP visitor to the resort for whom the slain receptionist was being pressured to offer “extra services” is being shielded. “Our dharna is for justice to Ankita and all the daughters of Uttarakhand who were victims of rape and murder. Why has the name

of the VIP not been disclosed yet,” Rawat asked. The dharna began at the Gandhi Park in Dehradun on Monday and concluded at 12 noon on Tuesday. Ankita Bhandari was allegedly murdered by the owner of the Vanantara resort Pulkit Arya and his two accomplices after she resisted being pressured into offering extra services to a VIP guest. However, the ruling BJP termed Rawat’s dharna a political stunt to get media attention. “He has lost from everywhere in the state in successive elections since 2017 and it is just another political stunt by him to stay in the limelight,” cabinet minister Rekha Arya said. “His dharna is just a political drama. It is Harish Rawat’s fight to save his identity,” Pradesh BJP media in-charge Manveer Chauhan said. The SIT is probing the case well. Even the Uttarakhand High court has rejected a petition seeking a CBI probe into the case.

Khurshid likens Rahul to Lord Ram, MP Congress Demands Treason Case Against Pragya Thakur for BJP says Cong puts devotion to family ‘weapon’ Remark; BJP Defends Her above devotion to God, nation Agency News: Bhopal Madhya Pradesh Congress has demanded that a case of treason be registered against Bharatiya Janata Party’s Lok Sabha member Pragya Singh Thakur for her “keep weapon at home” remark, while her party defended the statement saying it was for women’s selfdefence. Thakur, while addressing a programme in Shivamogga (Karnataka) on Sunday, said Hindus have the right to respond to those who attack them and their dignity, as she spoke about the killing of Hindu activists. The parliamentarian from Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh had also called on the community to at least keep the knives in their homes sharp, as everyone has the right to protect themselves. Madhya Pradesh Congress media department’s chairman KK Mishra told that the

Centre should now take action by registering a case for treason as Thakur “incited people for violence”. “She is now talking about a knife after holding a bomb in her hands. The acts of former BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma and Thakur are alike,” he claimed. Thakur is an accused in the 2008 Malegaon blast case. Six people were killed and more than 100 injured when an explosive device strapped to a motorcycle went off near a mosque in Malegaon, a communally sensitive town in north Maharashtra, on September 29, 2008. When contacted about the parliamentarian’s remark, state BJP spokesman Pankaj Chaturvedi told that Thakur had gone to meet the family of a girl who was brutally murdered.

Agency News: Moradabad Senior Congress leader Salman Khurshid has likened Rahul Gandhi to Lord Ram and described him as “superhuman” and a “yogi doing tapasya” as he lauded the former party chief for his Bharat Jodo Yatra, evoking sharp criticism from the BJP. Slamming the opposition party leaders for their show of “sycophancy”, the BJP said comparing a person out on bail in a corruption case, a reference to the National Herald probe, to a God worshipped by so many people not only hurts the feelings of Hindus but also the entire society. The Congress leader, however, remained unfazed and defended his remarks. “No one can replace God but everyone can try to walk the path shown by him. Why should anyone object if I say someone is following that path,” he said on

Tuesday. While BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia targeted the Congress at a press conference for Khurshid’s comparison, another party spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla, in a swipe at Congress leaders, said they put “parivaar ki bhakti” above “bhagwaan and rashtra ki bhakti”. The Congress must apologise for hurting Hindu sentiments, Poonawalla said. Khurshid, a former Cabinet minister, also likened Congress workers to Lord Ram’s brother Bharat. Khurshid, who is the state coordinator of the yatra.

The Maharashtra State Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) has warned of going on strike from January 2 if their demands of filling vacant posts and clearing pending dues from 2018 are not met. In a letter to state medical education minister Girish Mahajan on Monday, MARD president Dr Avinash Dahiphale has demanded the creation of 1,432 posts of senior resident doctors and payment of pending dues of dearness allowances from October 16, 2018. “The creation of 1,432 posts of senior resident doctors is our first demand. If the proposal for

the same is still pending with the state government, then why did it have the policy of bonded service for resident doctors passing out from government-run colleges,” the letter stated. The association has also demanded clearing pending dues of dearness allowances from October 16, 2018, it said. “There is also no parity in salaries of senior resident doctors across the state. Ravichandran Ashwin has taken a dig at those who perceive him as an “overthinker” of the game following his match-winning performance against Bangladesh in the second Test in Mirpur. Batting alongside Shreyas Iyer, Ashwin on Sunday played one of the best Test innings of his career to steer India to a three-wicket win from an improbable situation. His 42 not out came after a match haul of six wickets, making him the player of the match. “Overthinking is a perception that has followed me ever since I wore the Indian jersey with pride. I have pondered about it for a while now and believe I should have seriously considered a PR exercise to erase that word out of peoples minds,” Ashwin tweeted. Besides his exploits on the field, “Every person’s journey is special and unique, while some

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 auction saw records break as cricketers earned millions. However, such was the case with Indian pacer Sandeep Sharma, who failed to attract any interest from even a single franchise at the auction in Kochi on Friday. Talking about the snub, Sandeep admitted that he was “shocked and disappointed” to see himself going unsold. “I’m shocked and disappointed,” a disheartened Sandeep Sharma told Cricket.com. “I don’t know why I went unsold. I’ve done well whichever team I had played for and genuinely thought some team would bid for me. To be honest, I was not expecting this. Don’t even know where it has gone wrong. In domestic cricket, I have been performing well. In the Ranji Trophy, last

journeys require them to overthink it others can afford to keep it simple. The moment someone says I am an over thinker from the inside walls, I have always thought to myself that’s the way I play my cricket and not the way I recommend others to play. “Finally, I think deeply about the game and share my views because I believe when ideas are shared they can multiply into miraculous achievements. The fact that it may not be popular won’t deter me cos my goal is not to win the war of words.

Pakistan vs New Zealand: Babar Azam shows way after early wobble Agency News : New Delhi

Babar Azam, on the eve of the match, had said that he and his team were well-guarded against offthe-field distractions. He stayed true to his words by slamming an unbeaten 161 on the first day of the opening Test against New Zealand on Monday. Thanks to the captain’s knock, Pakistan overcame a wobbly start to reach 317/5 when the stumps were drawn at Karachi’s National Stadium. However, Babar’s 277ball stay at the wicket wasn’t really spotless. But it’s the runs which count at the end of the day and that he has already hit 15 fours — and a big six that brought up his century — will

surely leave a mark on the match. Giving Babar company at stumps was Agha Salman, unbeaten on 3. New Zealand failed to capitalise on a strong start with the ball. Led by new captain Tim Southee, the Black Caps began their first Test in Pakistan in 20 years by taking two quick wickets via stumpings, with Ajaz Patel removing Abdullah Shafique for 7 and spin partner Michael Bracewell dismissing Shan Masood for 3. Bracewell could have had the key wicket of Babar in the 15th over, but Daryl Mitchell dropped a simple chance at first slip, though the bowler responded by having Imam-ul Haq caught for 24 at mid-off three deliveries later.

round, I took seven wickets. I did so well in Syed Mushtaq Ali.” Sandeep has been a consistent wicket-taker, especially in the powerplay. But in the IPL 2023 auction, he found no takers. “I have always strived to be consistent in my bowling. And that’s the only thing in my hands. I can’t control selection or nonselection. If a chance comes then good, or else, I have to keep doing good work,” a hurt Sandeep said. Sandeep had set a base price of Rs 50 lakhs.

Graham Reid to Indian hockey players ahead of FIH World Cup Agency News : Bangalore India men’s hockey coach Graham Reid has warned his players against getting caught up in the moment and advised them to raise their game to the next level if they concede a goal in next month’s FIH World Cup. India will open their World Cup campaign against Spain in Rourkela on January 13, the first day of the tournament. “You sort of get caught up in the moment when you play an event of this magnitude. Don’t let yourself get caught up

in the moment. It could get quite daunting when you lose the ball, or concede a goal,” said Reid, who was part of the Australian side during the 1990 World Cup in Lahore. “It is important to develop ‘the next thing’ mentality. You can’t change what happened so you just move on to the next task at hand, stay focused on what’s to be done,” he added. Describing how the Australian team prepared for the World Cup in 1990, Reid said shutting the mind to the “raucous spectators” and “playing silently” had done the Australians.

box office numbers reflect the contribution of such films to all the corresponding languages. Abhishek Pathak-directed Drishyam 2, starring Ajay Devgn, Tabu, Akshaye Khanna and Shriya Saran, lived up to its box office hype by becoming the only film to cross the Rs 100-crore mark in November, ending the month on a stellar tally of Rs 280 crore. Led by Amitabh Bachchan, Uunchai hobbled its way to Rs 35 crore and the fifth spot on the list. However, the biggest letdown of the month was reserved for Katrina Kaif-starrer Phone Bhoot, also featuring Ishaan Khattar and Siddhant Chaturvedi.
