Investments by private equity and venture capital funds declined by nearly a third to USD 54.2 billion in 2022, which was characterised by a ‘funding winter’ after consecutive years of surge. Even after the decline, the year was the second best for India in terms of bets taken by such long-term investors on growing Indian companies, a report by industry lobby Ivca and the consultancy firm EY said. The investments by value were down 29 per cent as compared to USD 75.9 billion in 2021, while by volumes there was a 4.6 per cent decline at 1,211 transactions as against 1,269, the report said, adding that a sharp fall in large deals resulted in the decline. The firm’s partner Vivek Soni said investor interest has been weighed down by inflation woes, recession fears, the rising cost of capital and elevated levels of uncertainty driven by geostrategic challenges. He added that 99 funds dedicated to India raised USD 17.4 billion in 2022, and there is a high level of dry powder available.

The two-part BBC documentary, India: The Modi Question, through claims of having investigated certain (missing) aspects related to the 2002 Gujarat riots, has tried to project the riots and then-chief minister in a poor light. Reacting quickly, the Ministry of External Affairs has trashed the documentary as a “propaganda piece” that lacked objectivity and reflected a “colonial mindset”. The central government has also clamped down on it with a ban and asked social media platforms to remove videos and website links to the film. While the government’s move to ban the documentary has been criticised by the opposition, especially the Congress and Trinamool Congress (TMC), the government has received support from unexpected quarters. Congress veteran and former Defence Minister A. K. Antony’s son Anil Antony has slammed those using the BBC documentary as a stick to beat the BJP with. A day after his social media post on the documentary, he resigned from the party alleging “intolerant calls to retract a tweet”. The Modi Question raises more questions than it seeks to answer. Going by the content, intent and the timing of the documentary, the BBC seems to be rushing on a path where angels would fear to tread. According to the channel, the first part reportedly tracks Modi’s ascendancy to power in Gujarat and the 2002 riots. If the BBC had obtained previously unpublished reports from the British Foreign Office as it claims, more serious questions arise on the nature of the documents and the timing and manner in which they have been publicised. The 2002 riots were investigated by a Special Investigation Team followed by the Supreme Court upholding its closure report.

The statement was instantly met with criticism by the Congress.

That innings, along with David Miller’s 53 at the back end — the pair putting on 110 in a fifth-wicket partnership — gave them something to defend on a pitch which looked comfortable to bat on. “Disappointed, I think we played some excellent cricket for the majority of the game,” said England captain Buttler.

Hockey World Cup: Need for mental strength, says Graham Reid

Agency News : New Delhi

India head coach Graham Reid has taken responsibility for not pushing for a mental conditioning coach for the team before the FIH Men’s World Cup began. India, the hosts, had a disappointing campaign as they failed to reach even the quarter finals. “Being in a home World Cup does bring extra pressure. Sometimes that’s difficult to process. So that was my thought process... I did not really think it (mental conditioning coach) was needed at that point. I thought I had enough experience

to be able to impart the sort of stuff we have been talking about,” Reid said on Thursday, after India’s 8-0 win over Japan in a classification match. Reid added: “... it was always like when do we start that process (of having a mental conditioning coach) and then it did not happen. I take responsibility for that (for not having a mental conditioning coach).” The coach also said that the mental conditioning coach will have to be an Indian for the best results. “It is a big thing to have trust in your team, within the coaching group. I also need to feel we can trust that person and we need it to be the right person. I think it needs to be an Indian,” the Australian said. India play South Africa on Saturday in the 9th to 12th place classification match.

Daryl Mitchell believes stand-in

T20 captain Mitchell Santner is currently one of the best spinners in white-ball cricket after the leftarm tweaker’s impressive outing against India in the series opener here. Santner returned with miserly figures of 2/11 from his four overs to set up New Zealand’s 21-run win over India in the first

“He is one of the best spinners in world cricket with the white ball at the moment,” Mitchell,

who was adjudged man-of-thematch for his 30-ball unbeaten 50, said at the post-match media interaction. He picked up the wicket of in-form Shubman Gill, who inspired India to a 3-0 sweep over the Kiwis in the preceding ODI series. “He (Santner) keeps proving his class. It was a very special spell by him that put us in a good position to win. He has done it for a long time now, we are very lucky to have him,” Mitchell said.

Ahead of the annual budget presentation, an India-centric top US strategic and business advocacy group has urged Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to simplify and rationalise direct and indirect taxation system in India, a move it believes would increase the confidence of global investors and yield greater foreign direct investment. Direct taxes can be in the form of income tax, capital gains tax or securities transaction tax, while indirect taxes such as GST, Customs Duty or VAT are levied on all end-consumers to buy any goods or services.

“Rationalise corporate tax rates for foreign companies,” said the USIndia Strategic and Partnership Forum (USISPF) in its submission to the finance ministry ahead of

the annual budget presentations on February 1. It said that the rate for foreign companies, including banks be reduced to bring parity and sought to rationalise tax for new manufacturing companies.

Urging India to simplify capital gain tax reforms, USISPF sought harmonising holding periods and rates of different instruments.

“Reiterate India’s commitment to the global tax deal,” it said and urged the Union Finance Minister to extend the concessional tax regime to Foreign Portfolio Investment (FPI) from investment in securities.

Tata Motors has announced a price increase across its internal combustion engine (ICE) portfolio of passenger vehicles. The company said in a statement it has been absorbing a significant portion of the increased costs on account of regulatory changes and a rise in overall input costs. However, now it is passing on some portion to customers through this hike.

Effective February 1, the weighted average increase will be 1.2 per cent, depending on the variant and model, said the company. Customers can expect to pay slightly more for Tata’s popular models such as the Tata Tiago, Tata Altroz, and Tata Harrier.

The company’s main competitor, Maruti Suzuki, also announced a price increase of 1.1 per cent on their models earlier this month because of similar cost pressures. India has mandated that all automakers must comply with stricter fuel efficiency regulations by April of this year and will also require all cars to have six airbags by October. The company will also be increasing the prices of its commercial vehicles from next month, according to sources. The extent of the price increase is not yet known. Tata Motors’ stock jumped over 8 per cent to Rs 453.2 after the company announced its Q3 results of a consolidated net profit of Rs 2,958 crore against a loss of Rs 1,516 crore over a year ago.

I feel truly honoured; this year has been excellent for me. However, in the past having performed in films like Satta, Aks, Daman and Shool, I have won the National Award as well. Alongside I have also been lucky to have won accolades for festival films as well. This was possible only because I was lucky to have been associated with meaningful films. It’s truly an honour being in this industry for so many years. My work has been appreciated and recognised this year with winning awards for KGF and Aranyak. It feels great. Both my commercial films as well art films have found their place. It feels satisfying to note that my performances have been recognised in these films. I feel maybe my body of work is coming full circle. Till date people remember all my songs and remember my contribution to cinema and my performances. During my Nirbhaya activities, I was very disturbed. I wanted the victim to get justice through a fast track session. I am always concerned about the safety of girls and it is then I decided to make that film Maatr which won the National Award. I love my country and I am like any other citizen who has children. I am always looking forward to making our country a better place to live in, especially for the coming generation. I am as concerned as any other mother out there who wants to leave behind a beautiful and peaceful country, for her children. I am proud to be the citizen of this country. I tell people to try to be the change that you want to see in this Country. I unhesitatingly pour my heart and walk the talk whenever there is a need to do so. It’s not that I am just saying, I would like to participate and bring about that change for our coming generation. Well! I think I was the first to become a single mother at the age of 21. Legally it wasn’t allowed but I literally became the legal guardian and then I turned 21. I think it’s been the most gratifying experience to be a mother.
