India will continue pursuing Mallya’s deportation matter with the UK

India asks UK to deport Mallya Agency | New Delhi

India said on Thursday it had asked Britain to deport Vijay Mallya, the liquor tycoon who flew to London last month as bankers pressed him to repay about $1.4 billion owed by his defunct Kingfisher Airlines. The ministry of external affairs has written to the British High Commission seeking Mallya’s return so that “his presence can be secured for investigations against him” under India’s anti-moneylaundering law, spokesman Vikas Swarup told report-

ers. The liquor tycoon and Formula 1 boss has not disclosed his whereabouts since flying first class from Delhi to London on 2 March, leaving the Indian government and bankers red faced as they try to crack down on high-profile defaulters. The foreign ministry last Sunday revoked Mallya’s diplomatic passport that he carried as a member of Parliament’s upper house. The move was a step towards launching a bid to bring home Mallya, who is the subject of a non-bailable warrant

“Italian firm allotted Rs 50 cr to ‘manage’ media” Agency | New Delhi

BJP today raised the AgustaWestland issue in Lok Sabha, expressing concern over the reported misuse of media by the Italian company which had earmarked Rs 50 crore for the purpose to clinch the VVIP chopper deal. Raising the issue during zero hour, Meenakshi Lekhi suggested that the middleman Christian Michel had been given the amount to ‘manage’ the media. Amid strong protests from Congress for allowing raising the issue, Lekhi said it was unfortunate that media which is an organ of healthy democracy

has been “misused”. “It amounts to misuse of the freedom of expression. It is irresponsible as media is part of democratic structure”, she remarked. Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge, supported by party colleagues, protested to Speaker Sumitra Mahajan. “I respect you much. You should not have allowed this. Please don’t do this”, he was heard remarking. Amid the protests, the Speaker adjourned the House for the lunch recess. Reports had it Christian Michel, a British businessman and an alleged middleman in the deal, was paid millions of dollars by AgustaWestland.

SC clears common medical entrance test NEET, approves Centre’s schedule Agency | New Delhi

The Supreme Court on Thursday paved the way for a common entrance test for MBBS, BDS and PG courses through the National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET). The Centre and Medical Council of India (MCI) had said the All India Pre-Medical Test for May would be treated as NEET1 and the second phase would be treated NEET-2, which will be held on July 24. The combined result was scheduled for August 17. The SC cleared the schedule proposed by the Centre. The NEET -- a new entrance examination -- is meant to bring all medical aspirants in the country under an umbrella test. The decision

to hold the entrance exam through NEET was earlier opposed by states including Tamil Nadu and Association of Karnataka Medical Colleges besides minority institutions like CMC Vellore saying it is illegal and unconstitutional. On Thursday, the court was hearing a PIL filed by NGO Sankalp Charitable Trust, which has contended that as authorities were not conducting the NEET for the students across the coun-

try aspiring to join medical colleges, the private medical colleges were holding their own exams to admit the students. On April 11, the apex court had recalled its controversial judgment scrapping the single common entrance test for admission to MBBS, BDS and PG courses in all medical colleges, delivered by then Chief Justice of India Altamas Kabir on the day of his retirement.

spokesman said its policy was neither to confirm nor deny that extradition requests have been made. ED has approached the MEA seeking initiation of deportation proceedings

against Mallya, charged with money laundering in the Rs 900 crore IDBI loan fraud case. Mallya, who had left India on March 2 for the UK, can approach the British authorities to grant him permission to continue his stay in that country or challenge the revocation of his passport.

the Investigating Officer of the sedition case said that they do have problem if the three are given bail in view of the undertaking submitted by them. The court granted the bail on the condition that they will not to leave their respective home districts for another six months after being out on bail. The IO J.S. Ghedam submitted before the court that in case they are enlarged on bail, they will have no objection. They will have to deposit a bail bond of Rs. 25,000.

Politicians divided by Agusta unite on odd-even

The Agusta helicopter verdict in Italy achieved one of those rarest-of-rare moments: Sonia Gandhi had to answer questions on live TV (Wednesday). Equally unusual: Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh spoke out (NDTV 24×7). For two public figures who have consistently and conspicuously avoided speaking to the media — TV news in particular — these comments indicated how seriously they had taken the BJP’s allegations of corruption against the party and The Family. Since Tuesday, allegations have been flying faster than the chopper itself. Facts were rarely and barely mentioned: What of a two-year-old CBI investigation? Till Wednesday afternoon, we had heard nothing of it. For the BJP, the verdict allowed it to drag Sonia Gandhi into the controversy. On Wednesday, newly appointed BJP Rajya Sabha member Subramanian Swamy actually named her; his remarks were expunged but that didn’t trouble TV news which liberally quoted him, then juxtaposed him with Sonia dismissing the charges as baseless while the ticker tape fought its own version of the war: “Top” Congress leaders involved, says Defence Minister Parrikar; “Let them take my name, I am not afraid,” replies Sonia. This is the ding-dong war of words TV news so loves, the Hunger Games of politics as entertainment — like the Ishrat Jahan case and P. Chidambaram last week, both stories first on Times Now. TV’s role is interesting: It “breaks” stories, debates them, encourages opponents to attack each other as the best form of defence; and it is brazen where political parties are coy: So when Manohar Parrikar said “top” leaders of the Congress are involved in Agusta, CNN News 18 obligingly interpreted him — “Gandhis” have taken money. When NDTV’s Nidhi Razdan asked Sambit Patra if he was saying that Sonia had taken money, she had linked “Sonia” to “money” and he didn’t need to answer. As a political strategy, it works wonderfully for the BJP: No proof required, simply hammer the allegations into the Congress coffin with repeated allegations and let the media do the rest. And the more the Congress protests, the more it appears that, “The lady doth protest too much”, as Shakespeare put it. The two parties behave like the bitterest foes in the latest season of Game of Thrones (Star Premiere HD). On television, they are at each other’s throats, almost ready to slit them. Can anything, ever, unite them? Odd-even of course.

The makers have hired international makeup crew to take care of Kamal’s look in the film,” the source added. The film, which is being produced by Raaj Kamal In-

Agency | Mumbai Fans have been waiting patiently for Amitabh Bachchan, Vidya Balan and Nawazuddin Siddiqui starrer ‘TE3N’, ever since the film went on floors. So far, we have come across few inside pictures. However, we hardly know anything about the film or the kind of roles our favourite actors play in the film. Well, sweat no further as here are some inside dope about the film along with new stills.Set in Kolkata, ‘TE3N’ is about a crime that affects its three principal characters. Amitabh

Bachchan is John Biswas, a grandfather on the relentless pursuit of justice since eight years. Nawazuddin Siddiqui plays the role of Father Martin Das, whose life was changed forever by the same crime that claimed the life of John’s granddaughter, whereas Vidya Balan is Sarita Sarkar, the cop who swings into action when an identical crime is repeated eight years later. The film, which has Sujoy Ghosh as creative producer and Ribhu Dasgupta as its director, is scheduled for a worldwide release on June 10th, 2016.

Hrithik Roshan and Kangana Ranaut’s battle makes for a unique case study. Their nasty separation and subsequent court battle are hogging the limelight like their films. With ‘new facts’ being reported almost everyday, here is a compilation of the events and how people have reacted to this. Kangana and Hrithik have worked together twice, first in Kites (2010) and then in Krrish 3 (2013). During Kites, Hrithik was rumoured to be involved with his co-star Barbara Mori. Reports of Hrithik-Kangana affair started doing the rounds after Krrish 3. They are said to have come close to each other during the shooting of this film. The Hrithik-Kangana affair rumour gained momen-

tum after the actor officially separated from his wife Sussanne in December 2013. For most part of 2014, their relationship was a hush-hush affair as Hrithik stayed low profile with only one release that year in the form of Bang Bang, while Kangana grew strong with Queen. The rumours about their affair became the talk of the town only in 2015 when speculations became rife about them seeing each other. When asked about Hrithik in June 2015, Kangana re-

sponded by saying, “Ab main kya bolun? I don’t want to comment on this. Jo hoga pata chal jayega.” Hrithik Roshan was quizzed about Kangana only on one occasion when he and Sonam Kapoor were present at an event to launch his single, Dheere Dheere. Hrithik was asked if he was dating Kangana and the actor replied, “Oh my god, what do I say.” Before he could say anything, Sonam intervened and said, “Guys he just said that he is single a little while earlier.”

Russia was the top drugs offender in 2014 accounting for 148 of the 1,693 doping violations recorded, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) said on Wednesday. Athletics accounted for 200 of the violations, coming second behind bodybuilding (207) in WADA’s annual report for 2014. Russia, which could miss the Rio Olympics athletics because of a doping scandal, was followed by Italy (123), India (96), Belgium (91), France (91), Turkey (73), Australia (49),

China (49), Brazil (46) and South Korea (43) as the top 10 offending countries. In total, individuals from 109 countries across 83 sports committed anti-doping rule violations. A total of 1,462 of the doping violations arose through adverse analytical findings in conventional drug

tests, while 231 were uncovered through evidence-based intelligence such as evading or refusing to submit a sample. WADA Director General David Howman said the evidence-based violations highlighted “the increasing importance of non-analytical approaches to anti-doping.”

Waqar Younis blames Shahid Afridi for T20 losses, wants Umar Akmal axed from team

Just the fact it will be their last match of the season at their home ground, Wankhede Stadium, should be reason enough for Mumbai Indians to feel inspired when they take on Kolkata Knight Riders on Thursday. Even though the Indian Premier League will continue till the end of next month, on court’s orders Mumbai Indians will be playing the rest of their home games at Jaipur. Naturally, there is heightened interest around the game with a huge demand for tickets. Kolkata Knight Riders is always a big draw. That they have

been the team to beat this season, sitting pretty at the top of the table, sets the stage for a cracker of a game. Mumbai, on the other hand, have been inconsistent. At home too, have lost two and won one. However, Mumbai pacer Jasprit Bumrah said they won’t treat Kolkata any differently. “We treat each and every game as a

knockout game. We treat every opponent equally. We don’t give any special preferences to any side. We prepare for every match the same way,” he said. Kolkata’s biggest strength this season has been their opening partnership between Robin Uthappa and Gautam Gambhir, which has consistently given them starts.

Dipa’s favourite move is the Produnova vault which has only been completed successfully by five women gymnasts all around the world. Agency | New Delhi WhatsApp is one of the most favored IM applications out there. The most recent update to the application saw the addition of sharing PDF documents, making it a very versatile instant messaging client. A new discovery has now revealed that WhatsApp could be baking in more features with the app soon. While it’s not known when the features will go commercial, it has already been found on the beta version, apparently. The iOS version is supposedly getting a new voice mail option, which basically lets you send a voice message when a WhatsApp call is failed. Further, users will also be able to callback and message directly from the notifications shade (Android) when they have a missed WhatsApp call. This is similar to how the stock dialer app works on most Android phones, so it seems like WhatsApp wants to replicate that experience. Lastly, there is supposedly going to be a new zip file sharing feature on the app, which could aid you in sending large files in a compressed format. Of course, we’re yet to see all these features for ourselves, so we can’t comment on their functionality. Since it’s a beta feature, we expect WhatsApp to make these new additions public over the coming weeks. Don’t be surprised if it takes longer, though.

Agency | Karachi Former chief coach, Waqar Younis has urged the cricket authorities to drop Umar Akmal from the Pakistan team and blamed Shahid Afridi for the side’s run of T20 defeats against England, New Zealand and in the Asia Cup and World T20. In a hard-hitting report on his two-year tenure as Pakistan coach, Waqar has directly blamed flamboyant allrounder, Afridi’s poor form, captaincy and attitude for the national team’s recent poor run.

The defeats led to the sacking of the national selection committee and resignations of Waqar and Afridi as coach and captain of the national T20 side. In his full report, the excerpts of which were leaked out in the media and led to his resignation last month, Waqar specifically mentions Umar Akmal, Ahmed Shehzad and Afridi and has advised the authorities to stop feeding off egoes. On Akmal, Waqar is very critical and describes him as an indisciplined player. “Umar Akmal was asked

by Haroon Rasheed (former chief selector) to come the next day for fitness test to join the team in Sri Lanka for ODIs, instead he chose to catch a flight to Caribbean for a lucrative league without informing anyone. Few months later, when he was caught in the Hyderabad incident or misbehaving with his domestic team coach, all times he managed to retain his place back in team. Is this what criteria we are setting for selection of new players?,” Waqar wrote in his report.

The Gujarat High Court has issued a notice to the state government, the Censor Board and the Viacom18 Media in response to a PIL taking exception to a song in the film “Santa Banta Private Limited”. The PIL, filed by Anil Dubey, seeks deletion of the line “Daaru ke sang khaani hai (To eat with liquor),” in the song “Machhli jal ki raani hai” from the film which released last week. The producer Viacom18 Media Private Limited has “in the name of creative liberty played mischief with a rhyme which the children have been learning for more than 50-60 years…by usage of the words, machhli jal ki raani hai, raati daaru ke sang khani hai, the song sends a very bad message to the children

It has made Gujarat government a respondent on the ground that the song promotes consumption of liquor in the state where prohibition is in force and is against the law.
