Nickel rebounds on fresh demand Agency | Mumbai, May 28

Nickel and copper utensils scrap prices rebounded at the non-ferrous metal market here today on good buying by stockists amid renewed demand from alloy industries. Meanwhile, tin, select copper and brass prices dropped on stockist selling following subdued offtake from consumer industries. In overseas markets, london copper edged up in early trade from a onemonth low hit the session before as the dollar eased on vague hopes of a Greek debt deal, but prices were curbed as seasonal demand passes its peak and by plentiful supply.

Gold, silver stretch losses for third day

Agency | New Delhi, May 28

Tracking weak trend overseas and low demand from jewellers, gold extended its slide for the third straight day as prices dropped by another Rs 25 to Rs 27,325 per 10 grams at the bullion market today. Silver followed suit, which traded lower by Rs 260 to Rs 38,540 per kg. Sentiment remained weak, largely in line with a weakening trend overseas where gold held at 2-week low as prospects for an increase in US interest rates boosted the dollar, curbing demand for the metal as an alternative asset, traders reasoned.

Heatwave kills nearly 1,500 in India; Andhra worst hit with 1,020 deaths

Agency | New Delhi

Hospitals in India were struggling on Thursday to cope with an influx of victims of a blistering heatwave that has claimed nearly 1,500 lives in just over a week. Hundreds of people — mainly from the poorest sections of society — die at the height of summer every year in India, but this year’s figures are unusually high. In southern Andhra Pradesh — by far the worst-hit state — 1,020 people have died since 18 May, more than double the number of heat-related deaths for

the whole of last year. In neighbouring Telangana, where temperatures hit 48 degrees Celsius (118 degrees Fahrenheit) over the weekend, 340 people have died from the heat recently compared to 31 in the whole of last year. “Heatwave conditions in 2015 so far have been of a shorter duration, yet with a higher death toll,” said Arjuna Srinidhi, programme manager for climate change at the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) research group. “This could be due to the sudden change in temperatures after a prolonged

wet February and March that had kept the temperatures cool.” Hospitals in New Delhi, where top temperatures have soared to 45 degrees Celsius, were struggling to cope with the fall-out. “Hospitals are overflowing with heatstroke victims,” said

Ajay Lekhi, president of the Delhi Medical Association. “Patients are complaining of severe headache and dizziness. They are also showing symptoms of delirium,” he added, describing a common symptom of severe dehydration.

Kerala: Rahul Gandhi enjoys ‘tasty fish’ lunch at fisherman’s house Agency | Chavakkad

Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday enjoyed a ‘tasty fish’ lunch served by a fisherman’s family at a hamlet near here and said he would visit the beach again to taste Kerala’s delicious tapioca and spicy fish curry.“I am going to come back here again because I was given a very, very tasty fish lunch,” Rahul said addressing a fishermen’s ‘Sangamam’ (conclave) on the second day of his Kerala visit. Meanwhile, slamming the Narendra Modi government over its decision to extend ban on trawling, Rahul also said, “the fish brought by the fishermen is better than the fish brought by trawlers.” Rahul visited almost all 51 houses in the fish-

ermen colony at Blangad beach here and at the end of his visit he was served lunch at the small house of Kizhakkoot Karunakaran. The lunch was prepared by Karunakaran’s three-member family including his wife Thankamani and daughter Neetu, local MLA and Congress leader TN Prathapan said. The Congress Vice President was served curry and a variety of fish fry items includ-

ing ‘neymeen’ (seer fish) and ‘veluri’ along with ‘kappa puzhukku’ (tapioca curry). Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala, KPCC President V M Sudheeran and Prathapan joined Gandhi for the lunch at the fisherman’s house. Later, Rahul interacted with the family members of fishermen in the colony and heard their grievances. Addressing them

in English which was simultaneously translated into Malayalam by Chennithala, Gandhi said land is becoming more and more valuable and the central government was trying to take it away from farmers.“So we are fighting them and trying to make sure that they do not take land away from the farmers. In the same way that they are taking land away from farmers, they are also trying to sea away from fishermen.”

Centre sends in 4,500 paramilitary forces to assist state govt deal with Gujjar protests The Gujjar agitation for reservation in government jobs entered its eighth day on Thursday, with hundreds of protesters still blocking railway tracks in Pilupura. The Centre has despatched 4,500 paramilitary personnel to assist the state government deal with the situation. Earlier, the Rajasthan high court reprimanded the state’s chief secretary and the director general of police for failing to arrest any Gujjar agitator and allowing people to suffer due to the agitation which has crippled road and rail services in the state. The HC directed chief secretary CS Rajan and DGP Manoj Bhatt, who appeared before it, to act immediately

to remove all road and rail blockades. “You are conducting meetings at Jaipur and the public has been suffering since the last 8 days. There is no law and order situation right now so go to these places, get the track cleared and report to me tomorrow in person,” ordered a single judge bench of the court. They were also asked by the HC to file an affidavit by Friday clarifying as to why no action was taken under the FIR registered

against the agitators. “You (CS and DGP) being the head of bureaucracy and law and order machinery are not bound to be mere spectators of the political dialogue between the Gujjar agitators and the state government,” said Justice RS Rathore. “We cannot allow people to suffer for these undemocratic agitations. It seems that the both of you have gone senseless towards the plight of the public.

One Year of Modi govt: ‘Bure din’ for social sector

No one in the last two decades has come to power with greater euphoria than the Narendra Modi sarkar. It has taken less than a year for that euphoria to recede and change to disappointment. There are sufficient reasons for this change. The celebrations of the first year in office of this government are in sharp contrast to the plight of the common person. The callousness of the government is most noticeable in its attitude to social sector issues. It does not seem to realise that rights-based legislation were not a UPA creation, but a reflection of the aspirations of millions of Indians struggling to procure the most basic entitlements. In its desire to establish itself by discarding past achievements, the current government is making a cardinal mistake. Nothing could be more symptomatic of this narrow partisan approach than the prime minister’s statement on the MGNREGA in Parliament. It is shocking that the PM could promise to build a programme only to establish its monumental failure. This statement sent a strong message down the line to discredit and mismanage the programme. It is a failure not only of leadership but of vision and governance. The PM’s rhetoric sounds hollow even to his own party. The Madhya Pradesh chief minister has publicly stated that the MGNREGA is one of the best programmes in independent India. Rights-based legislation like the forest rights act, right to food, right to education and right to information, passed in the last 10 years, did not merely provide economic and social entitlements to the poor. They were an attempt by India’s poorest citizens to claim delivery of basic services and ensure accountability. The people’s right to participate to ensure delivery and to monitor these programmes arose from numerous failures. Rights-based legislation are an attempt by people to demand a share of governance. The demand for transparency, the right to question, audit development programmes and their implementation, arose from this. This framework is being undermined through budget cuts and the attempt to replace rights with cash transfers, which are much more in a paradigm of doles and handouts. Bank accounts without money and spurious promises through contributory pension and insurance schemes cannot replace the crippling of existing programmes. Even as earlier programmes and laws are ridiculed, there is no vision or direction for what is to replace them. There is, in fact, no roadmap this government has to offer for the social sector. If this government felt that the earlier legislation were a complete failure, it should have issued a white paper on the shortcomings and provided a blueprint for how these would be overcome. This would at least have provided the people of this country an idea of what they could expect and where they could hold the government to account.

Agency | New Delhi After hosting one of the most stylish Brunch of the season, insiders now say that the Dil Dhadakne Do team is all set to host a Sundowner party at a bungalow in Alibaug. The film has an eclectic cast and with

all of them present it becomes quite a starry affair. The team is scouting for a place and working on a theme. They are in the initial stage of planning but are looking to host it in the week of release. They are also drawing up a lot of invitees and maybe this

party will have the star cast along with other celebrities of Bollywood. The Sundowner would be more of a celebration. Sundowners are suppose to be chic affairs and so we wonder if the actors have started thinking of what they will be wearing at the event.

He is often called ‘India’s Michael Jackson’ by many. Super dancer Prabhudheva is again in news, and this time for his amazing dance steps in ‘ABCD2’. The actor-director will be seen play-

ing a grey character onscreen for the first time ever in choreographer turned filmmaker Remo D’Souza’s film, which will hit the screens on June 19, 2015. The makers have released a new track from ‘ABCD2’, which was shared by

lead actress Shraddha Kapoor on Twitter. The song has been sung by famous singer Mika, and also features actor Varun Dhawan in it. Prabhu can be seen performing his signature steps along with Remo’s fusion style dance.

Mr Sawant clarified that Ms Leone’s Bollywood films were not included in the complaint, which was filed on May 14. The woman has complained that the Ek Paheli Leela star has posted pictures that amount to circulat-

Bollywood films could earlier be watched with families. Today we cannot see them with our families. When I visited her website I found that it was not fit for viewing. That’s why I lodged this complaint,” the complainant told reporters some days earlier after filing the complaint.

Agency | Mumbai Actor Anil Kapoor revealed it was Amitabh Bachchan who suggested him of not taking a break from acting as the Bollywood megastar made a mistake by doing so. Mr Kapoor, who has been in the industry for almost 38 years now, said that there was a time when he was pondering to take sabbatical but spoke to Mr Bachchan who advised him not to go for it. “I can’t re-

member any best or worst phase of my career. For me it is always about reinvention and experimenting. I am consistent, steady and feel fortunate to be a part of good films. I remember we were shooting for Armaan. There was a time when I wanted to take sabbatical, and I did speak to Amitabhji about it.” “He said he made the mistake of not working for some years and told me not to take a break.

In a ceremony conjuring up images of the royal orient, Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar was crowned as the new ‘Maharaja’ at the Amba Vilas Palace in Mysuru on Thursday. The coronation was a private affair but symbolic of continuing the family tradition of the Wadiyars. It was devoid of anything consequent to the abolition of the institution of the maharajas and the Privy Purse after Independence. The coronation was attended by a large number of well-wishers including members of

the royal family, senior political leaders and the who’s who of Mysuru and Bengaluru. The presence of such large number of people was reflective of the contribution of the Wadiyars to the develop-

ment of Mysuru and public affection. In view of the coronation, the palace was closed for tourists on Thursday but the Palace will be special illuminated at night to mark the celebrations.

After winning two honours at the Cannes Film Festival, director Neeraj Ghaywan’s debut film Masaan will be released across India on July 24. The film, which stars Richa Chadha, Vicky Kaushal, Shweta Tripathi, bagged the acclaimed FIPRESCI and the Promising Future awards at the recently concluded festival.“I am happier for India and my team than myself. A win in the official selection has been long overdue for India and we have a dou-

ble win.” “For so many years Indie supporters as Anurag Kashyap, Vikramaditya Motwane, Guneet Monga, and now Manish Mundra, have worked immensely towards giving a platform to Indian Indies with the limited resources they

had, against the conventional Bollywood structure,” Neeraj said in a statement. The film is joint produced by Manish Mundra (Drishyam Films), Macassar Productions, Sikhya Entertainment and PhantomFilms.

SPORTS ROUNDUP India Cricket Team Full of Superstars, They Don’t Need a Coach: Kapil Dev

Agency | New Delhi

Agency | Paris Leander Paes and Rohan Bopanna along with their respective partners crossed the opening hurdle of the men’s doubles event with hardfought victories, even as Sania Mirza posted an easy win in the women’s doubles of the French Open tennis tournament on Wednesday. India’s veteran star Paes along with his Canadian partner

Daniel Nestor fought hard before prevailing over Australian combo of James Duckworth and Chris Guccione 6-2 5-7 7-5, while Bopanna and Florin Mergea of Romania came from a set down to post a 5-7 6-3 6-4 victory against the Serbian combination of Filip Krajinovic and Viktor Troicki. In contrast, top seeded Sania and Martina Hingis had a cake walk against Germany’s Julia Goerges and

Barbora Krejcikova of Czech Republic, as they advanced to the second round with a comfortable 6-3 6-0 win. Earlier, having wrapped up the opening set comfortably, the 10th seeded pair of Paes and Nestor lost the second 5-7. But the IndoCanadian duo used all their experience to prevail over their rivals in the third and deciding set, which also turned out to be another gruelling battle.

Even as the Indian cricket Board drags its feet on appointing a support staff for the upcoming season, World Cup-winning Kapil Dev has a word of caution for the BCCI bosses who will finally decide on Team India’s head coach/director/high-performance manager in the next few days. India begin a tour of Bangladesh from June 7. The tour starts with a Test match from June 10. The teams also play three one-dayers. This is the first time that the senior national squad is without a coach ahead of a tour, probably an indication of how the Board bosses

are not on the same page. Reportedly, BCCI president Jagmohan Dalmiya and its secretary Anurag Thakur have not been able to agree on the tenure of the man who will hold the reins of the senior national team. Three big names - Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid and

Ravi Shastri - are doing the rounds. According to reports, Ganguly wants a four-year term while Ravi Shastri, who was Team Director until the World Cup, wants nothing less than 18 months. Most Board officials are against a four-year term for anyone.

FIFA president Sepp Blatter’s defence will be familiar with every one who follows Indian cricket - it is right out of former BCCI president N Srinivasan’s playbook. When the Supreme Court told Srinivasan to step aside as board president while hearing the IPL betting and fixing case, Srinivasan kept insisting that he had not been charged with anything and therefore should be able to stay on the throne. Blatter’s defence is no different. “The president is not involved,” FIFA spokesperson Walter De Gregorio said on Wednesday. “Of course he is the head of FIFA, but he is not involved so how can you say he has to step down?” It doesn’t matter that under Blatter, FIFA has been consistently

and rampantly corrupt. What matters it that the trail of corruption does not lead to his door – at least not yet. Both the BCCI and FIFA share a similar philosophy as well. They have stridently maintained they are private bodies that operate within their own rules and guidelines and are not subject to outside interference. They are the Lords and Masters of their universe. Blatter and Srinivasan controlled their

respective organizations by doling out favours and withholding rewards for friends and foes alike. Under Srinivasan, state associations began receiving much more money than before. Under Blatter, football federations in Asia, the Americas and Africa found themselves the beneficiaries of his largesse. No wonder the Asian Football Confederation gave Blatter its vote of confidence on Thursday.

But the investigation had nevertheless determined that “there have been a few incidents of sexual harassment which were committed by two male officials” and that the third was guilty of “improper conduct... which did not amount to sexual harassment,” the SLC added. Sri Lanka’s sports ministry said at the weekend that criminal prosecutions would follow after its own inquiry had

found two team managers demanded sexual favours from team members. Under Sri Lankan law, anyone found guilty of sexual harassment can face up to five years in prison plus an unspecified fine. The board said both its own report and the separate inquiry by the sports ministry had highlighted the “unsatisfactory situation” involving the women’s team where there was “favouritism and bias”.

The company will announce its earnings on May 28. Analysts feel the sequential results may see major improvement. The staterun oil marketing company had reported a profit of Rs 551.2 crore in December quarter. Strong refining margins, nil subsidy burden and higher marketing margins may drive the bottomline in Q4. Net sales are seen falling 26.8 percent (down 5.4

percent sequentially) to Rs 54,731.1 crore during January-March quarter compared to Rs 74,736.6 crore in the same quarter last year. Operating profit may drop 46 percent yearon-year (up 201.4 percent quarter-on-quarter) to Rs 3,401 crore in the quarter gone by. Analysts expect gross refining margin for the quarter at USD 4 a barrel against USD 1.5 a barrel in Q3FY15, led by higher Singapore GRMs, lower fuel & losses, and likely no inventory losses. Key issues to watch out for are inventory & forex change impact, subsidy sharing and update on Mozambique/Brazil E&P blocks.

SI Review: Micromax Yu Yuphoria

Agency | Bangalore Chinese Smartphone companies dominate the Smartphone sector in India. However, in the midst of this batter for market share, India’s own Micromax unveiled Yu Yuphoria at a conference held in New Delhi. The phone is a combination of good specification at an affordable price. Let us take a closer look at the new Smartphone from Micromax, reports Firstpost. The phone comes with a removable rear cover, which is made of plastic. However, it features a

metallic frame and helps in getting a good grip over the Smartphone. The 2230mAh battery that comes with Yu Yuphoria, lasts an entire day but, on heavy usage, it can still last up to 8 hours. However, the phone offers quick charging and has a removable battery. The phone offers 2GB RAM, 16GB internal storage and a decent 8-megapixels rear camera only at a minimal cost of Rs.6,999. It makes a perfect buy for anyone who has limited budget but, still wants a good specification.

Australian fast bowler Josh Hazlewood on Thursday put his hand up for selection in the first Test against the West Indies with a standout performance on the first day of Australia‘s practice match. The dry conditions anticipated in the Caribbean wouldn’t normally be expected to favour the tall New South Wales (NSW) fast-bowler, whose bounce —especially on Australian pitches — is one of his greatest assets. WICB President’s XI vs Australia: Josh Hazlewood talks about play on Day 1 But Hazlewood showed his versatility on the opening day of Aus-

tralia’s three-day game against a West Indies President’s XI, picking up two for 26 with six maidens in 15 overs, reports cricket.com.au. And he was unlucky not to add to his tally in the final session, twice finding the inside edge with some late swing only for the ball to somehow evade the stumps and reach the fine leg boundary. One

of the most encouraging aspects of Hazlewood’s day was his ability to find lateral movement with both the old and new ball on a slow and dry surface devoid of grass. “Everyone’s trying to do their best in a tour game to put their name forward,” Hazlewood said. Chanderpaul deserves a send off with dignity and respect, says Brian Lara Agency | Kingston

West Indies batting legend Brian Lara has severely criticised the Cricket Board’s (WICB) move to axe Shivnarine Chanderpaul from the national team and has called for an honourary sendoff to the veteran batsman by including him in two-Test home series against Australia. The selectors, led by former West Indies captain Clive Lloyd, left out 40-yearold Chanderpaul from the 12-member squad for the first Test against Australia, citing lack of form of the left-handed batsman over his last 11 innings, in which he averaged only 16. But Lara feels the decision was just another example of the way the WICB disrespects its players. “This has nothing to do with numbers or averages. What are they saying that Chanderpaul

was given the last 11 innings to get the desired number of runs to break a record? This has absolutely nothing to do with runs or numbers. It has to do with respect and Chanderpaul has earned the right to say goodbye in an acceptable way,” he said. “In fact, he should be allowed to do it in his own way,” Lara was quoted as saying by ‘Trinidad and Tobago Guardian’. The snub effectively means the end of Chanderpaul’s illustrious career, in

which the talented cricketer has scored 11,867 runs at an average of 51.37. Lara has urged the WICB to reinstate Chanderpaul for the two Test matches against Australia and the series be looked ipon as his final series. “In that way, there will be no hostility and whether he makes a double century or a duck, it doesn’t matter, it will be his farewell series and the entire cricketing world will know that,” the former West Indies skipper said.

Sri Lankan cricket’s governing body on Wednesday announced the sacking of three officials after allegations that members of the women’s national team were asked to perform sexual favours to keep their places. Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) said all three officials were shown the door at the end of their contracts last month after an internal inquiry found two of them guilty of sexual harassment and a third of improper conduct. The Board said in a statement that “there was no evidence of any physical intimacy” by any of the three men, none of whom have been named.

We are going to summon the advocates to verify the facts stated in the Army officer’s complaint,” said the police officer. The crime branch is also investigating to find out whether the two ‘lawyers’ are actually registered as lawyers with the Bar Council of Gujarat.
