US launches airstrike, ‘eliminates’ ISIS-K member

Agency News: Washington The US military launched an airstrike in Afghanistan to target ISIS militants on Saturday. A member of the IS’s Afghanistan affiliate has been killed, the forces claimed. The airstrike using a drone came after US President Joe Biden’s vow to avenge the bomb blast at Kabul aircraft that left several Afghan and American soldiers dead.It was conducted in Nangarhar, east of Kabul. The ISIS-K (ISIS-Khorasan) had claimed responsibility for the suicide bombing two days ago on August 26.A defense official was quoted as having said that Biden had authorized the drone strike

which was ordered by Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin. The US claimed that an ISIS-K militant was killed in the operation, and they “know of no civilian casualties”.Meanwhile, UK will end its evacuation operations in Afghanistan on Friday. Two days ago, 68 US lawmakers had written to President Biden, wanting to know his strategy to prevent the Taliban from acquiring nuclear weapons.“Are you prepared to support regional allies militarily in the event that the Taliban militarise the Afghanistan border? SUNVILLA SAMACHAR Developments In Afghanistan, Though Alarming, Are Its Internal Affairs

Whatever the impending regime change in Afghanistan may mean to India, the country should accept the reality soon and join China, Russia, Pakistan and the UK, among others, to support the political change in Afghanistan. The India-Afghanistan relations are over 1,000years old. Sultan Mahmud of Ghazni invaded India 17 times between 1000 and 1027 AD.Nearly all former Islamic rulers of India originated from Afghanistan. India will make a bigmistake if it trusts the USA on its immediate Afghanistan policy. A regime change inAfghanistan is no guarantee for peace. Name an Islamic rebel group which is not present inAfghanistan. The state has lived with several terrorist groups, including ISIS (Khorasan) thatclaimed responsibility for the latest deadly attack outside Kabul airport. The attack came asthe US forces were in the process of withdrawing from the country following the Taliban&takeover.Despite the fact that India has been a major economic partner of Afghanistan for decadeswith considerable strategic interest in the country as a key geographical link with centralAsian republics, the US kept India out from most political negotiations over Afghanistan, owing mainly to Pakistan’s objections. During the Troika Plus talks among China, Pakistan,Russia, and the United States, India remained noticeably absent. With the Taliban takingcontrol of Kabul, India needs to establish working relationship with the group fast to protectits critical investments in Afghanistan and try to keep the only alternate route (skippingPakistan) open to connect with central Asia through Iran. Any delay in India’s support to a new Afghan regime could prove to be costly as a Pakistan-China-Taliban combine could take the opportunity to help foster safe havens for anti-Indian terrorist outfits that could sow chaos in Kashmir and other parts of the country. It may be worth considering the Taliban’s public assurance of its readiness to work with India. Moreover, there is no reason for India to become hesitant to accept the Taliban or any other group bringing about the regime change in Afghanistan when it has adjusted with the military regime in Myanmar, which seized control of the state in a coup overthrowing the democratically elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi and detaining her along with leaders of her National League for Democracy party, earlier this year. The Myanmar military had killed and injured thousands of Rohingya muslims before throwing them out of the country, mainly to Bangladesh and India As of May 11, at least 783 Myanmarese protesters, mostly students, had been killed and a total of 3,859 people were under detention, with 20 of them facing death sentences. Despite the UN condemnation of the military takeover and the US, UK and EU imposing sanctions on the junta, regional powers such as India, China and Russia have taken a more measured approach to the unfolding situation. Though the latter condemned the violence, none have explicitly criticised the Tatmadaw (the armed forces in Myanmar). For India, Myanmar is the gateway to Southeast Asia. It is a neighbour with which India shares both a land and sea border. Myanmar has been an important ally in combating extremism and insurgency in the region. If the military regime in Myanmar is acceptable to India, a Taliban rule in Afghanistan should also be acceptable to it for different reasons. Trust is the key. The new Taliban, led by apparently more moderate and educated leaders such as Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, appears to be different from the old, non- compromising Taliban. They may like to keep India on their side to negotiate better with undependable Pakistan, which once sided with the US to overthrow the previous Taliban regime, and politically shrewd China. On July 28, China Foreign Minister Wang Yi met a Taliban delegation, led by Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, in Beijing and was believed to have had a detailed discussion on the group’s role in Afghanistan. The Taliban’s top leaders are reportedly working on the policy on how they would govern Afghanistan. Baradar, one of the Taliban’s popular public faces, also negotiated the exit of US troops with the former US president Donald Trump during their peace talks in Doha, last - Kapilkumar M. Agency News: New Delhi The Delta variant of SARSCoV-2 is more virulent and transmissible than the Alpha variant! A team of researchers concluded this after they found that people infected with the SARS-CoV-2 Delta variant have approximately double the risk of hospitalisation compared with those infected with the second one. The researchers in their study, published in The Lancet Infectious Diseases journal, had analysed more than 40,000 Covid-19 cases in the UK. “This study confirms previous findings that people infected with Delta are significantly more likely to require hospitalisation than those with Alpha, although most cases included in the analysis were unvaccinated,” said researcher Gavin Dabrera, Consultant Epidemiologist at the National Infection Service, Public Health England. “We already know that vaccination offers excellent protection against Delta and as

this variant accounts for over 98 per cent of Covid-19 cases in the UK, it is vital that those who have not received two doses of vaccine do so as soon as possible,” Dabrera added. However, the study has indicated the importance of vaccination, as the team emphasised that multiple studies have shown that full vaccination prevents both symptomatic infection and hospitalisation, for both Alpha and Delta variants. The Delta variant was first reported in India in December 2020 and early studies found it to be up to 50 per cent more transmissible than the variant of Covid-19 that had previously gained dominance worldwide, known as the alpha variant, first identified in Kent, the UK For the study, the team analysed healthcare data from 43,338 positive Covid-19 cases in England between March 29 and May 23, 2021, including information on vaccination status, emergency care attendance, hospital admission.

Despite separate alerts of a terror attack in Kabul by agencies of Denmark, Australia, France, the US and the UK and their putting them out in public domain, Indian security agencies or the external affairs ministry delayed in taking cognizance of the evolving threat in Afghanistan and issuing specific advisory of a terror threat in the Afghan Capital. Luckily, no Indian was either hurt or killed in the deadly bombings in Kabul on Thursday. Even Pakistan, which has close ties with Taliban, stopped its flights to Kabul a week before the twin bombings. “This should

have raised an alarm in the security establishment here. The agencies should have picked up the development for issuing an advisory to Indian citizens there,” a source in the security establishment admitted. In 2019 too, when the “Easter Bombings” happened, the agencies did not issue an advisory to the Indian citizens in Sri Lanka despite the Centre having an advance and specific inputs of an impending terror attack in the high security diplomatic zone of Colombo to the Government there. The diplomatic staff and the security personnel already present in Afghanistan were evacuated even before the Indian nationals could fly out of Kabul.

hearing, saying that they “shall not operate merely because a marriage is solemnised by

a person of one religion with a person of another religion without force or by allurement

or by fraudulent means and such marriages cannot be termed as marriages for the purposes of unlawful conversion”. Talking to reporters, Rupani said, “The State Government is firm. Hindu girls are made to elope, and later forced to undergo religious conversion.

(Law against) love jihad (was brought) in this very context, to take strong action (against such activities). The State Government will certainly approach the Supreme Court against the high court’s order staying sections of the Gujarat Freedom of Religion (Amendment) Act, 2021), and will do all that is required.” He was speaking on the sidelines of an event organised in the state capital Gandhinagar to celebrate the 125th birth anniversary of Gujarati poet Jhaverchand Meghani, who was also given the

title of “Rashtriya Shayar.” The 2021 law, which penalises forcible or fraudulent religious conversion through marriage, was notified by the BJP Government on June 15 this year. The original Act was in force since 2003 and its amended version was passed in the Assembly in April. Last month, the Gujarat chapter of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind filed a petition in the HC, claiming that some of the amended sections of the new law were unconstitutional. Among other sections, which mainly deal with religious conversion

through marriage, the high court has also stayed the operation of section 5, which according to the BJP government, is the “core” of the entire Act and a stay on it effectively stays the entire legislation. The Government on Wednesday told the high court that section 5 has nothing to do with marriage per se. A stay on section 5 would actually stay the application of the entire law itself, and no one would approach the authorities for seeking permission before getting converted, the government had said.
