It would be nationalistic with a socialist character. Tamil Nadu BJP President K. Annamalai displayed his patriotism by flaunting his rather expensive watch. Responding to opponents raising questions about his watch, he said that if one considers his patriotism then his watch is not that expensive. He said that the material used in the watch is the same used to make Rafale fighter planes. Since he is not part of India’s armed forces, he is showing his love for the country by wearing the watch. It’s a different matter altogether that BJP high command has rejected his defence and advised him to refrain from such demonstrations. In short, he has been told to wear a reasonably priced watch instead. After drawing flak over the watch controversy, Annamalai tried to use his cows and goats as a shield. He said that he had bought the watch during his IPS days when it wasn’t so costly. He claims that his cows and goats are his only assets. The Indian rupee this year saw a sharp decline hitting alltime lows multiple times. In the current calendar year, the rupee has declined about 12 per cent to 82.85 now after plunging to all-time lows multiple times. The domestic currency had stood at 73.77 to a dollar on January 12, 2022. The rupee witnessed a decline this year mainly due to the strengthening of the American currency, risk-averse sentiment among investors, and escalation of geopolitical risks due to the conflict in Ukraine. The major reason for falling the rupee in the past few months was the continuous outflow of dollars due to the exit of foreign portfolio investors (FPIs). However,

after nine straight months of net outflows since October 2021, FPIs in July became net buyers. According to a senior banker, the rupee has seen the worst in 2022 and is likely to start making a recovery in 2023. Foreign investors have infused a net Rs 11,557 crore in Indian equities in December so far despite a market correction and increasing concerns over the re-emergence of COVID in China and some other parts of the world.

Left-arm orthodox Pradipta Pramanik registered his maiden five-wicket haul in first-class cricket as Bengal were well placed in their Ranji Trophy game against Nagaland at Sovima on Monday. At stumps on Day 1 at the Nagaland Cricket Stadium, the hosts, after opting to bat first, were nine down for 166. Pramanik, in his first Ranji game this season and coming in place of pacer Ravi Kant Singh, was the wrecker-in-chief with his 5 for 43 off the 24 overs he bowled. “There was nothing much on offer for the bowlers out there. But Pradipta was simply outstanding,” Bengal head coach Laxmi Ratan Shukla said. “We still

have a long way to go though.” Pramanik’s fellow left-arm spinner Shahbaz Ahmed and pacer Ishan Porel were the other wicket-takers for Bengal. With the pitch likely to assist spinners more as the game progresses, Bengal have also included debutant and off-spinner all-rounder Karan Lal in the XI as a replacement for Sayan Sekhar Mondal.

Jaydev Unadkat did get his much-awaited chance with the red ball and kept his “promise” with a spirited effort in his first Test for India after 12 years. His love for the longer version of the game became apparent more than ever in January when he typed a tweet that went on to be widely circulated. “Dear red ball, please give me one more chance.. I’ll make you proud, promise!” the leftarm pacer had posted. “Everyone thought that I was referring to a national comeback. I was just missing redball cricket in general as Ranji Trophy was postponed for a second time (due to Covid),” Unadkat, who took 3/67 in the second Test against Bangladesh last week, told after his arrival back home. Housing sales in top-7 cities have hit a new peak in 2022 despite the sustained hike in property prices and home loan interest rates in 2022, breaching the previous high of 2014, according to a study by Anarock. It added that about 364,900 units have been sold so far this calendar year against 236,500 units in 2021 across the top-7 cities, an increase of 54 per cent year-on-year (YoY). According to the report, the last peak in housing sales was seen in 2014 when 343,000 units were sold in the national capital region (NCR), Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), Bengaluru, Pune,

Hyderabad, Chennai and Kolkata. MMR had the highest sales of about 1,09,700 units in 2022, followed by NCR (63,700 units). These two realty hotspots are once again the leading residential markets, according to the report. Chennai and Kolkata had fewer sales than other cities. About 16,100 units were sold in Chennai and 21,200 units in Kolkata during the year. Puri added that while it was widely anticipated that the rise in property prices and interest rates towards the second half of 2022 would have a cascading impact on residential sales, Q4 of calendar 2022 remained quite robust, with as many as 92,160 units sold in the period.

A bestselling author of mystery thrillers, Jatayu, the common man in Feluda stories, is a source of mirth and merriment for people of all ages. His first dialogue in the film is ‘Tang mat karo, kaafi ho gaya, zyada ho gaya’ (do not disturb any further. This is enough, more than enough) while haggling with a coolie. The impeccable comic timing of Santosh Dutta and his typical Bengali accent never fail to trigger an explosion of belly laughs.

This year, we have witnessed the waning of the pandemic effect for home appliances segment. After two-years gap, the summer season this year saw higher demand for cooling appliances, and then festive season was an enabler for consumers to upgrade their appliances and initiated those purchases which were being postponed since a long time. Although inflation affected consumer sentiment in the mass segments, premium segments remained buoyant. We have witnessed growth in premium segments over mass segments across geographies and channels. For Godrej Appliances,

the premium segment has grown over 100% in comparison to the pre-pandemic period FY 19-20; this growth rate is at par with the industry trend. Additionally, we have been witnessing more traction for appliances delivering higher convenience, larger capacities, and health-first innovative features with latest technologies.
