India defeat Australia by 27 runs in Melbourne to clinch T20 series

India seal T20 series with win Rohit, Kohli fifties help India post 184/3 in second T20I; Australia implode against spinners to surrender series

Agency | Melbourne Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli maintained their prolific form with the bat to secure India’s series-clinching 27-run win over Australia in the second Twenty20 match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Friday. Manof-the-series in India’s 4-1 defeat in the one-day internationals, Rohit hit a 47-ball 60 at the top of the order to give the touring side a fast start along with partner Shikhar Dhawan (42). India, who were put in to bat, rode an opening stand of 97 to reach 184-3 in their 20 overs with Kohli providing a late assault in a strong top-order performance with a swashbuckling unbeaten knock of

Australia, who made six changes in the side from their last defeat, also made a strong start with captain Aaron Finch providing the fireworks. Finch (74) and Shaun Marsh added 94 for the opening wicket to keep Australia, who handed T20 debuts to three players, in the hunt but India’s

spinners picked up quick wickets to halt their march. Finch hit eight fours and two sixes in his 48-ball knock before he was run out trying to steal a quick single. India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni missed a regulation stumping off Marsh but made amends with smart work with the gloves to dismiss dangerman Glenn Maxwell for one off leftarm spinner Yuvraj Singh. The insect is also a carrier for dengue virus that claims hundreds of lives and infects thousands across the country every year. The symptoms of Zika are also the same as for dengue infection – fever, head and body ache, nausea and so on. The ministry said all major airports will be directed to put-up signboards, asking passen-

gers coming to report to a doctor if they experience symptoms like body rash and conjunctivitis other than fever, body ache and nausea. The transmission of the virus mostly takes place when the infected person is running a fever. “The technical committee should be ready with the

guidelines by tomorrow, and the airports will have signboards up by next week. We are focusing on pregnant women as the virus seems to be affecting the babies inside the womb,” Dr Jagdish Prasad, Director General Health Services, government of India, said on Friday.

Gujarat’s powerful Patel community, angry over the imprisonment of their leader Hardik Patel, on Thursday forced chief minister Anandiben Patel to inaugurate a bridge in Surat from a remote control room at a book fair. The chief minister, herself a Patel (also known as Patidars), was in Surat to inaugurate different projects of the city municipal corporation. In her list of openings, apart from the book fair, was a bridge in Varacha area of the city. The Patels in the area had threatened to protest if the chief minister reached the area, forcing Anandiben to inaugurate the bridge from a control room at the Vanita ashram grounds. Soon after the inauguration,

the local Patels wrote ‘Patidar bridge’ over it with black paint. “We had given an ultimatum to the government to relase Hardik Patel by January 30, but we did not get any response from the government. That is why we have decided not to allow any politician in Varacha,” said Dharmik Mandavia of the Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti

The bloated carcass of an alleged Bryde’s whale washed ashore near a beach close to Juhu Tara Road on Thursday evening. Gandhi’s martyrdom day to witness ideological slugfest

The 68th martyrdom of Mahatma Gandhi, to be marked on Saturday, has become an arena of competing ideologies trying to own the legacy of the father of the nation. But these efforts have also led to surfacing of contradictions within their folds. The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) has asked its cadres to observe a two minute silence, just as the entire country would, at 11 am in memory of the Mahatma and other martyrs. “Our cadres will observe the two minute silence along with the rest of the country,” an RSS spokesperson said. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and senior ministers will also attend events to pay their respects to Gandhi, assassinated on 30th January, 1948 by Hindu Mahasabha activist Nathuram Godse. However, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)’s Goa unit has blessed an event to unveil a book on Godse, ‘The Story of an Assassin’, in Madgaon at a government owned convention centre. The chief guest at the book launch is Satyaki Ashok Savarkar, who is described on the invite as the grand nephew of “martyr” Nahturam Godse and “freedom fighter” VD Savarkar. The central BJP has distanced itself from the event, but party’s Goa Chief Vinay Dinu Tendulkar told Business Standard that he had no knowledge of the event. “But what is the problem even if it were to take place?” Tendulkar asked. However, it isn’t just the Gandhians that are in a quandary. As many as 67 “non-BJP, non-RSS” backed civil society groups have planned a ‘people’s march in defence of the Republic’ in New Delhi. These civil society groups include a cross section - leftist activists, Gandhians, LGBT groups as well as Christian and Muslim organisations. Several Dalit outfits are lending their voice to the protest as Saturday would have also been the 27th birthday of Hyderabad Central University research scholar Rohith Vemula, who committed suicide earlier this month. “We, the members of the Indian public, are deeply concerned with the grave assaults that are being mounted on the Republic,” activist Shabnam Hashmi, who has coordinated the effort for the ‘Idea of India Collective’, said. The organisers were keen not have the direct participation of political parties or leaders at the event, but had welcomed affiliated outfits of political parties, including students’ wings and labour unions. According to sources, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) affiliated outfits took part in the planning of the protest march but later conveyed that they will be unable to share a platform if Congress affiliated outfits were to participate.

Sooraj Pancholi romances Jacqueline for an upcoming single ‘GF’

Agency | New Delhi Sooraj Pancholi, who is one film old in the industry, will be romancing Bollywood actress Jacqueline Fernandez for an upcoming single titles ‘GF’. The song has been choreographed by Remo D’Souza. Jacqueline Fernandez seems to be following the footsteps of Bollywood actors-turned-singers like Shraddha Kapoor, Salman Khan, Alia Bhatt and Sonakshi Sinha. The duo shot for the Bhushan Kumar-produced video this month in Mumbai. Initially Jacqueline refused to croon the number, but agreed to do it later on.

It was none other than Remo who suggested her to sing. She said, “In fact, they didn’t even have female vocals in the song, and included them before they heard me in the studio.” The actress is looking forward to singing for films now. Sooraj, who is sharing screen space with Jacqueline for the first time said, “It’s a peppy romantic track about a guy who tries to woo a girl he’s fallen in love with at first sight. It was fun working with Jacqueline, she made me comfortable.” He had the practice sessions with 13.13 dance crew, which was an ‘ice-breaker’ for him.

Mastizaade review: Sunny Leone’s movie is limp and unsatisfying Agency | New Delhi

Mastizaade isn’t even a movie. For almost the entirety of its run time, it feels like getting screamed at by a pissed off plastic clown. It’s as pointless as a punctured condom. It’s as ghastly as a bad boob job. It’s like entering a lunatic pervert’s Internet search history tab and discovering only cake recipes. Let me repeat: Mastizaade isn’t a movie. Agency | New Delhi Reflecting improvement in government finances, fiscal deficit in the nine months of 2015-16 worked out to 88% of the annual target as against 100.2% in the same period last fiscal. In value terms, the April-December fiscal deficit stood at Rs 4.88 lakh crore, or 88%, of 2015-16 Budget estimates (BE). This is an improvement over the year-ago period as the deficit then stood at 100.2% of the 201415 BE. The improvement is mainly on account of buoyancy in tax collections, which have kept revenue deficit in check. The fiscal deficit - the gap between the government’s expenditure and revenue - for 2015-16 was pegged at Rs 5.55 lakh crore for the whole year in the Budget presented by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley in February.

Virat Kohli fan’s arrest shows Pakistan’s hatred for India: Shiv Sena Agency | Mumbai

Agency | Karnataka Telecom operator Idea Cellular Thursday announced the expansion of its high-speed 4G LTE services to 39 towns in Karnataka. The company said within a month it has expanded 4G LTE service footprint to 24 districts, including Bengaluru, Mysuru, Madikeri, Karwar, Chikmagalur, Belgavi and Chitradurga, covering 20 percent of the state’s population. With rapid expansion, Idea will launch 4G service in Mangaluru, Udupi-Manipal, Vijayapura, Ballari and 18 more towns by end of the fiscal, taking the total tally to 61. Idea has over 8.6 million consumers in Karnataka, the company said in a release here. In December, Idea had announced the launch of 4G LTE services in all four telecom circles (five states) of South India - Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana and Karnataka. Earlier this month, it launched services across three more circles - Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Haryana and Punjab - expanding its 4G LTE service footprint to seven telecom service areas.

Apple planning to sell refurbished iPhones in India

Lashing out at Pakistan, Shiv Sena said on Friday that by arresting a fan of Indian cricketer Virat Kohli for hoisting the Indian tricolour while terrorists are “roaming free” on its soil, the neighbouring country has once again displayed its hatred for India. The ruling coalition partner also sought to know when Indian government would take action against anti-national elements and “disloyal Pakistan-lovers”. “Umar Draz’s house was raided and he was charged with committing an offence against his country (Pakistan). Was his mistake

really this big?” an editorial in party mouthpiece ‘Saamana’ said. “Those who attacked the Indian Parliament, (those who) were responsible for the 26/11 terror attacks in Mumbai and recently for the attack on Indian Air Force base in Pathankot and are roaming free in Pakistan. By arresting the youth, the country (Pakistan) has once again

displayed to the world its hatred for India,” it said. Umar Draz, 22, a tailor by profession from Okara district of Punjab province in Pakistan and a die-hard fan of Indian batsman Virat Kohli, was arrested on January 26 when India beat Australia in a T20 match in which Kohli scored 90 runs. He is facing up to 10 years imprisonment.

The top seeds fought past the seventh seeds Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka 7-6 (1) 6-3 in the women’s doubles. In a perfect climax to their stupendous run, Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis were on friday crowned the Australian Open women’s doubles champions after they tamed the spirited Czech duo of Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka in straight sets for their 36th win in a row, here. The top seeds fought past the seventh seeds Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka 7-6 (1) 6-3 in the women’s doubles final that lasted one hour and 45 minutes. It was their third consecutive Grand

In an incredible feat, Sania and Martina have now extended their unbeaten run to 36 matches, winning eight titles in a row. They won five straight titles in 2015, starting from the US Open and before the Australian Open now. It was Sania’s second title at the Australian Open, having won the mixed doubles

in 2009 with Mahesh Bhupathi. The final though was not a stroll in the park for the world number one team with the Czechs putting up a great fight in the opening set. The match was littered with breaks with the two teams struggling to hold serve throughout. Hlavackova was excellent from the baseline and Hradecka was terrific at the net, playing some breathtaking shots and winners.

Agency | New Delhi Apple is planning to sell refurbished iPhones in India and also is evaluating a facility in the country to restore used mobiles shipped from China. Apple has filed an application to the Environment ministry’s technical review committee (TRC) for importing and selling refurbished iPhones in the country. “Apple would like to seek the government’s approval to import and sell its certified preowned iPhones in India; manufacture and sell its certified pre-owned iPhones in India,” the report quoted the application dated December 7. Earlier, a similar proposition from Apple was turned down by the TRC. The company had sought permission to import 2.5 lakh iPads to explore the refurbished market in the country. The TRC had shot down the request saying that the move would add to India’s e-waste. Refurbished electrical and electronic equipments (EEEs) have usually shorter functional life and tend to become obsolete quicker creating a pressure on the e-waste of the country. The TRC had said that at best that imports that were less than three year old with at least five years of more life in the refurbished stage could be allowed.

Agency | New Delhi “If you ask people who know me very well, they will tell you, ‘Ky is a bit crazy’.” That was Kynan Chenai’s response when asked why he eats baby food during competitions. Baby food is easy to digest but protein-heavy and hence is preferred by athletes world over. The response doesn’t provide even a hint of how serious this 23-year-old is about his shooting. Having secured the tenth Rio Olympics quota berth for India, the trap shooter had countless interactions

with the media before the enormity of the task at hand sank in. Kynan qualified for the final with a total of 120/125 after five rounds of qualifications, eventually finishing fourth. As he was the lone Indian in the fray, Kynan initially had to ensure he finished on the podium to be absolutely sure of a qualification berth. His job got easier when the first set of eliminations ended, and after the semi-final shoot-off, both the Kazakhstan competitors, Andrey Mogilevskiy and Maxim Kolomoyets, were eliminated. It left

Kuwait’s Abdulrahman Al Faihan and Talal Alrashidi, and Chinese Taipei’s Kun-Pi Yang and Kynan in the fray. As Kuwait— shooting under the ISSF flag because the national Olympic committee is suspended – had already won a quota, the three available quotas were distributed to India, Kuwait and Chinese Taipei. But getting the berth has brought him in direct competition with three-time Olympian and former World No 1, Manavjit Singh Sandhu, who was eliminated and failed to make it to the six-man final.

Pranab Mukherjee has queries, Gujarat anti-terror Bill sent back

Sunvilla News | Ahmedabad

President Pranab Mukherjee returned Thursday the controversial Gujarat Control of Terrorism and Organised Crime (GCTOC) Bill, 2015 to the Union Home Ministry, seeking clarifications on some of its provisions. The Bill passed by the Gujarat assembly has been turned down by two Presidents earlier. On March 31, 2015, the Gujarat assembly passed the stringent GCTOC Bill, retaining controversial

provisions that had thrice earlier led to previous such Bills being rejected by the President. Minor changes apart, it was more or less the same as the Gujarat Control of Organised Crime (GUJCOC) Bill,

first introduced in 2003 by the then state government of Narendra Modi. In September 2015, the GCTOC Bill was cleared by the Home Ministry and sent to the President for his assent. Officials said the Bill

U.S. Consul General Thomas Vajda visits Surat and Vadodara Correspondent | Mumbai

U.S. Consul General Thomas Vajda visited Surat and Vadodara on January 28-29, 2016 as part of his outreach in western India to support greater engagement between our two countries. During what was his first visit to Surat, Consul General Vajda visited the Larsen & Toubro facility in Hazira, where he viewed the facilities and planted a tree on the factory grounds. He learned about Surat’s role in the global diamond trade at a local diamond processing and polishing facility. Before leaving Surat, the

was pending assent to become a law since some aspects were in conflict with central laws. “The Home Ministry will provide additional inputs to the President after getting them from the Gujarat government,” a Ministry official said. The Ministry has informed the President that it will submit a re-worked Bill for his approval. In July 2015, the Centre sent back the GCTOC Bill to the state government after certain objections were raised by the Ministry of Information and Technology (IT). The IT Ministry had objected to a provision in the Bill which allowed authorisation of interception of telephone conversations and their admissibility as evidence before a court of law.
