Gogoi attacks Modi over comments on age

Agency |GuwahatI Amidst the Assembly poll heat in Assam, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi over comments that he was “90-years- old” and questioned whether the BJP leader was telling him “to die”. He says I am 90-years-old. What does that mean? Is he telling me to die or what? If you say go to a 90-year-old, where will he go? Is he respecting me or making fun?” he told reporters here. Agency | Larnaca An Egyptian man who hijacked an EgyptAir plane and forced it to divert to Cyprus demanding to see his ex-wife surrendered on Tuesday after a six-hour airport standoff ended peacefully. The hijacker, described by officials as “unstable”, claimed to be wearing a bomb belt but no explo-

sives were discovered after he gave himself up at Larnaca airport and was arrested. He tried to communicate with his Cypriot ex-wife, who lives on the island, and the hijacking was not terrorism-related, officials said. Most of the 55 passengers were quickly released after the plane landed but some escaped only minutes before the hijacker surren-

dered, including one man who climbed out a cockpit window. Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades said the hijacking was “not something that has to do with terrorism,” and a government official said the man “seems (to be) in love.”“This is about the individual action of a person who is psychologically unstable,” said the Cypriot foreign min-

Jat Reservation Bill unanimously passed in Haryana Assembly Agency | New Delhi

The Haryana Cabinet on Tuesday unanimously passed the Jat Reservation Bill in the Vidhan Sabha. The bill proposes to include Jats and five other castes in backward classes by bifurcation. On Monday, the Haryana Cabinet gave its nod to a bill providing reservation in government jobs and educational institutions to Jats and four other castes. The move came a day after protesters threatened to resume their agitation if their demands were not met by March 31, the last day of the Vidhan Sabha’s Budget Session. The draft reservation bill proposed six per cent reservation for Jats and four other castes

istry’s permanent secretary, Alexandros Zenon. The Egyptian interior ministry identified the man as Seif al-Din Mohamed Mostafa. The man reportedly dropped a letter in Arabic on the tarmac, making a number of rambling demands including to see his Cypriot ex-wife, with whom he has children. Police said she was brought to the airport along with a child but provided no further details. The hijacker also complained about the Egyptian government and demanded the release of female prisoners from Egyptian jails. “He is not a terrorist, he’s an idiot. Terrorists are crazy, but

they are not stupid,” the Egyptian foreign ministry said. Anastasiades told reporters the incident appeared to be motivated by personal reasons. Asked about reports that the hijacker had demanded to see a Cypriot woman,

Anastasiades laughed and said: “Always there is a woman.” His response drew laughter. After searching the hijacker and sending sniffer dogs into the plane, Cypriot police said no bombs were found. The EgyptAir

plane, which was headed from the Mediterranean coastal city of Alexandria to Cairo, landed in Larnaca at 8:50am (0550 GMT), after the hijacker had contacted the control tower 20 minutes earlier to demand the diversion.

The Mumbai Police had said the blasts were the handiwork of Students Islamic Movement of India activists who were led by Saquib Nachan, the former general secretary of the banned outfit. A total of 16 persons were arrested in the case. The Jats had given an ultimatum till April 3 to the state government to meet their demand of reservation. A meeting of Jats from 13 states is likely to be held in New Delhi

2 / Dt. 30-03-2016, Wednesday Editors’ Picks Wednesday, march 30, 2016 Virat a great batsman, who handles pressure with grace

Something special is blowing across Indian cricket. In some ways, it’s a reminder of the 1990s, when Sachin Tendulkar owned the television remote. While Virat Kohli has similar emotional effects on the fans, one difference stands out — his composure. Tendulkar bore far greater pressure, in a cricketing nation finding its backbone. He was the middle-class Marathi boy who grew up with the tag of genius. There was much to handle, and to his credit he did. But, unsurprisingly, the pressure showed. Kohli is different in the way he came up in Indian cricket. As soon as he won the Under-19 World Cup, he was cast as the boy who couldn’t handle success. He couldn’t get going on his Test debut and had to be dropped. He was a good batsman but he had the swagger of a genius. But in the end, ambition won out and suddenly, things changed. Rather, he changed them. He grew more disciplined, became fitter, turned more professional. A good batsman has willed himself to be a great batsman (in limited-overs cricket), who soaks in the harshest of pressures with more finesse than most other Indian cricketers. For someone with a feisty temperament, he retains a control seldom seen in Indian cricket. Where will we place these last two breathtaking knocks? In some ways, they were like Tendulkar’s Desert Storms. As good as those knocks were — and bear in mind, they were in the longer 50-overs format. Kohli’s have come in T20s, with its shorter duration to handle pressure, which can be more intense. Moreover, they have come in a World Cup event and against two different teams on two varying tracks. The Pakistan game was a turner, the Australian one was a sluggish will-bender. Both required different skills, but Kohli came through in style. Kohli fears no one. Tendulkar struggled appallingly against James Anderson late in his career. Another former cricketer, who agrees to speak on the condition of anonymity, says that no discernible shortcoming is what makes Kohli better than Tendulkar. “Tendulkar struggled against a particular type of bowler or opposition. You could get at him. With Kohli, he treats everybody with the same disdain. And, his self-belief is incredible.” Another former cricketer, on the condition of anonymity, says that Kohli’s ability to manipulate the opposition and his chanceless style of batting is what sets him apart. “Once he’s in, he’s in. He just doesn’t give you a chance. And, you can’t say that about too many batsmen,” he says. Self-belief, which makes him withstand the pressure in crunch situations, is something ingrained deep in Kohli’s persona; the “don’t worry, I will get you home” kind of stuff. “He has always liked a challenge. More important, he wants to overcome that challenge.

Agency | New Delhi Ever since Bipasha Basu and Karan Singh Grover worked together in Alone (2015) , rumours of their link-up have been doing the rounds. The couple has denied the same on multiple occasions, and claim to be “just good friends”. However, their chemistry has not gone unnoticed, and pictures of the duo from their vacations have often popped up on social media. Sources claim that until now, they could not take their relationship to the next level as Karan’s divorce from Jennifer

Winget was still pending. But now that the divorce has finally come through, sources claim that the actors are looking to make their relationship official. According to reports, Bipasha (37) and Karan (34) plan to get married on April 30 in Mumbai. Apparently, Karan’s mother had objected to their relationship initially, but has accepted it now. The duo has apparently already started locking the venue and functions for their nuptials. While Bipasha has been open about her love life in the past, this time she has kept mum.

Higher rates of breastfeeding, use of vaccinations and lower rates of smoking by mothers may reduce the risk of ear infections in babies, according to new research. Researchers from The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, US, found that rates of ear infection have dropped significantly since similar studies were conducted in the late 1980s and 1990s. They suggested that higher rates of breastfeeding, use of vaccinations and lower rates of smoking may be the major contributors. The study, led by Tasnee Chonmaitree, professor in the department of pediatrics, found that rates of ear infection dropped from 18 to 6% in three-month-olds, from 39 to 23% in sixmonth-olds and from 62 to 46% in one-year- olds. From October 2008 to March 2014, investigators followed 367 babies, less than one month old through their first birthday.

Satisfied with England‘s campaign so far in the ICC World Twenty20, captain Eoin Morgan today said every player of his side has showcased his versatility during the tournament which has made the side a “powerful” unit heading into tomorrow’s semifinal against New Zealand. On Sunday against Australia in the ICC World T20, India captain MS Dhoni once again hit the winning runs in the final over. But it was captain-in-waiting Virat Kohli who bent the Australian bowlers to his will to create the victory. He came in to bat in the fourth over and was still there when Dhoni smacked James Faulkner to the fence in the 20th. In the interim, Kohli cut and thrust his way to 82 not out from 51 balls and his record in T20 Internationals during chasing targets now reads like a cricket fiction: an average of 122.83 in wins at a strike-rate of 131; an average of 91.80 in chases overall at a strike-rate of 132.65 and an average of 228.50 in chases in the ongoing World T20. frame his innings. The chase seems to dissolve into a complex equation containing the number of runs required, the number of balls remaining, the strengths and weakness of opposing bowlers, the nature of the pitch, the placing of the fielders and the dimensions of the field. While at the crease, he is somehow able to work out how to keep the equation balanced as the situation ebbs and flows. On Sunday, he hit two boundaries from his first three balls to announce himself. Then, for the next 37 balls, it was dots, singles and twos barring one four and one

six off Glenn Maxwell that was mistimed and yet timed well enough to clear long-off. And all this while, the equation kept changing; twisting this way and that until after the 17th over when India needed 39 from 18 balls with six wickets in hand. Now it was simpler, clearer, and Kohli went to work. A short delivery from Faulkner was pulled to deep mid-wicket for four. Expecting a full delivery to follow, Kohli then carved the next ball behind point for another four. For an encore, Kohli simply stepped down the track and drove Faulkner over long-off for six.

New Delhi: South Africa T20 captain Faf du Plessis has attributed his side’s failure to reach the semifinals of the World Twenty20 to costly mistakes committed during league games against England and West Indies. In a setback to IPS officer Satish Verma, who led the investigation into the encounter of Ishrat Jahan, a special CBI court on Monday rejected his application seeking permission to inspect the second chargesheet in the case. Details of the chargesheet, filed in February 2014, have not been made public yet, but it names four officers of the Intelligence Bureau (IB), including former special director Rajinder Kumar. Rejecting the application, special judge D R Vyas justified the CBI argument that the copy of the chargesheet cannot be given to Verma since he has no locus standi to seek it, said CBI counsel R C Kodekar. The

court also held that Verma could not explain the reason for seeking the case papers. The IPS officer had also requested the court to allow him to look into an order of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) which refused sanction to prosecute IB officers. Since then, the second chargesheet is pending in the court. On March 11, Verma for the first time had moved the CBI court, seeking a copy of the second chargesheet, but his plea was rejected. Later, he moved a second application, stating that the superintendent of this court “made an endorsement in the said application that the documents prayed for in the application are not

8 held in Gujarat for hacking into Sales Tax dept system to commit fraud Sunvilla News | Ahmedabad

Police have arrested eight men including four government employees for allegedly hacking into the Sales Tax department’s computer system to activate ‘Taxpayer Identification Numbers’ of 14 defunct companies so as to fraudulently withdraw Rs 11 crore in tax credit. TIN, an 11-digit number, is used by the manufacturers and wholesalers to get tax credit on VAT filed by companies. They use bills of materials supplied to companies to get tax refund. The city crime branch and the cyber crime sleuths carried out an investigation after a case was filed by the Deputy Commissioner of Sales Tax Mahesh Patel on March 4. The accused, which included four employees of the Sale Tax department, tried to activate

defunct TINs of 14 companies using department’s computers on February 27 and February 28, when the department was closed for holidays. They planned to use these TINs to get tax credits on fake bills of suppliers to these companies. “When they activated the TINs, SMS was sent to the Deputy Commissioner of Sales Tax which alerted him as only senior officials are allowed to process activation,” said Joint Commissioner of Police (crime) J K Bhatt. Among the arrested persons, Balmukund Thakkar, owner of a Rajkot-based protein supplement company, was found to be the mastermind. Other accused include Sales Tax department clerks Dahyabhai Parmar, Mehul Makampara, Ashok Detroja and Virendrasinh Parmar who allegedly provided login IDs and passwords.

When contacted, Jha said Brahmbhatt

If he accepts the award, it is fine with us,” Jha said, noting that Brahmbhatt had already accepted Gaurav Puraskar.
