Three persons were charred to death when an oil tanker burst into flames after it rammed into a tree along National Highway 37 in Nagaon district of Assam today, police officials said. The incident occured at Baghjan near Jakhalabandha in the district. The three persons were in the tanker whose flames also engulfed the tree, gutted three nearby houses and a minibus parked nearby. The residents however, escaped unhurt, the officials said. Several fire tenders rushed to the spot and doused the flames, the officials said.

The politician is finding it tough to get around after he hit an Air India manager last week and then delivered the equivalent of a victory dance by bragging to reporters that “I hit him with my slipper 25 times.” Air India and other carriers have jointly banned Mr Gaikwad; yesterday, Air India cancelled his tickets for two separate flights to Delhi this morning. The Narcotics Control Bureau has arrested three persons for allegedly running a racket of exporting banned drugs and seized various psychotropic substances worth Rs 1.5 crore from them. “Based on a specific tip off, the Ahmedabad Zonal NCB officials nabbed Mohammad Arif and Mohammad Zafar when they came to collect some parcels of medicines, containing opium, from a courier company in Bharuch yesterday,” said Ahmedabad NCB’s Zonal Director Hari Om Gandhi. “When we checked these parcels sent from New Delhi, we found large number of tablets and capsules containing opium. Meanwhile, the third accused Mohammad Umar was
held by our team from Surat,” he added. Upon searching Arif’s residential premises, the officials found some more opium tablets concealed in tobacco packets and 480 capsules of Spasmoproxyvan, a schedule H drug, said Gandhi. “In total, we have recovered 27,000 tablets and capsules worth more than Rs 1.5 crore in the international market. We have arrested the trio for the violation of NDPS Act,” he said. The primary interrogation has
revealed that the trio was allegedly running a racket of sending these drugs to the US, Canada and Europe through the parcel service of postal department. “To mislead authorities, they used to write ‘food packet’ on the parcels. 2 / Dt. 30-03-2017, Thursday Editors’ Picks THURSDAY, MARCH 30, 2017 Finance bill makes funding for political parties more opaque than ever One of the most intriguing elements of this year’s Budget presentation was the pitch for political finance reform. On the heels of demonetisation, analysts cheered the news as exactly the sort of follow-on measure needed if the reality of anti-corruption policy was to catch up with the government’s lofty rhetoric. After all, here was a government using its might to tackle an issue that few administrations want to acknowledge, much less legislate on. Two months later, the government’s big political funding reform push has ended not with a bang, but a whimper. Ironically, this is because the government has succeeded, rather than failed, to enact its proposals. Today, India’s political finance regime is plagued by three major infirmities. First, there is a steady torrent of undocumented cash that lubricates the activities of both parties and candidates. Second, there is virtually no transparency regarding political contributions. In the majority of instances, we are ignorant about the identities of both the giver and the receiver. Third, political parties are not subject to any form of independent audit, which renders their stated accounts both fictional and farcical. Against this backdrop, what has the government chosen to do? For starters, it has lowered the limit for cash donations to political parties from Rs. 20,000 to Rs. 2,000. It has insisted that corporations too refrain from cash giving, requiring them to donate via cheque or digital payment. The Finance Bill also introduced the concept of an “electoral bond,” by which corporations can purchase time-limited bearer bonds from scheduled banks and transfer those bonds to registered bank accounts of political parties. While these funds will flow through the banking system (rather than under the table), corporations are neither obliged to disclose their purchases nor are parties required to report their deposits. At the 11th hour, the government belatedly attached two amendments to the Finance Bill. The first eliminates the cap on corporate giving (which previously stood at 7.5% of a corporation’s average net profits over the previous three years) while the second abolishes the provision that firms must declare their political contributions on their profit and loss statements. It should be clear by now that there is a dramatic mismatch between what ails political finance in India and the government’s “reform” measures. On the plus side, the Modi administration—true to its post-demonetisation ethos—has taken steps to clamp down on cash in politics. While its efforts are noteworthy, they would merit greater acclaim if the government had scrapped cash donations altogether, insisting that political parties embrace the new “Digital India.” Furthermore, while the government has lowered the cash limit to Rs. 2,000, it has not touched the disclosure threshold, which remains at Rs. 20,000. Politicians are already privately joking that the new cash cap will easily be gamed; the only difference is that their chartered accounts will demand a raise. The big loser here is the public.

So, there are several things customers need to figure out by Friday, March 31, such as whether you are a Jio prepaid or postpaid user, whether you should sign-up for the Jio Prime membership, what plans you should choose, and maybe even whether you should keep the Jio connection. Although every Reliance Jio user we’ve talked to has a prepaid SIM, we’ve seen people in the comments mention using postpaid SIMs. So, step one is to check which one you’re using, since if you are on postpaid, you will start receiving a bill from next month. Speaking of plans, there are two possibilities here - Jio Prime, and non-Jio Prime. If you subscribe to Jio Prime, you get to access some additional plans, but you’ll have to pay Rs. 99 for the year to do so, though you can easily get that money back.
