BJP’s gamble to weaken Patidars?

10% quota for EBCs in Gujarat Sunvilla News | Gandhinagar

The 10 per cent quota for Economically Backward Communities (EBC) announced on Friday by the state government is a first for a prosperous state like Gujarat where the political verdict over the last two decades has been powered by the dominant agrarian community– the Patidars. That it is a political gamble and smacks of tokenism by the BJP to woo the Patidars who have been agitating for

inclusion as OBCs, is obvious from the fact that the decision was taken by the core group of the BJP led by national president Amit Shah along

with Gujarat Chief Minister Anandiben Patel and Gujarat BJP chief and cabinet minister Vijay Rupani. Legally, there will be problems given

the Supreme Court’s 50 per cent cap on reservation. But Rupani’s statement that the government is willing to fight right upto the apex court for

the sake of the EBC quota, is already a disclaimer of sorts. Currently in Gujarat, Other Backward Castes (OBCs) have a 27 per cent quota, the Scheduled Castes (SCs) quota is seven per cent and Scheduled Tribes (STs) get 15 per cent reservation. The ordinance on the EBC quota will be issued on May 1, Gujarat’s foundation day, to be applicable for an annual income cap of Rs 6 lakh — Rs 50,000 per month –for ‘upper-caste’ people excluding the OBC/ ST/SC. This upper cap is likely to include a large chunk of upper-middle class from the upper

castes which also forms a core vote bank of the BJP. It remains to be seen how the ordinance will define ‘upper-castes’ and, if the upper cap income of Rs 6 lakh per year will also apply to people from other religions like Muslims and Christians. The immediate reason for the decision is the Patidar quota stir led by Hardik Patel who remains in jail on sedition charges even as five of his colleagues who were part of the agitation, were set free on bail, on Thursday. The Patidar community is not only the symbol of ‘upper castes’ in Gujarat but also the backbone of the

The Hardik Effect? Gujarat Changes Congress leader Digvijay Singh’s Quota, But Patels Aren’t Happy daughter Karnika Singh passes away Sunvilla News | Ahmedabad

Gujarat today announced a new 10 per cent quota in government jobs and colleges for the poorest among the upper castes. The move is expected to benefit the powerful Patel or Patidar community in the state, which has aggressively campaigned for reservation, led by their jailed leader Hardik Patel. But they say it weakens their cause. From May, those who earn less than Rs. 6 lakh a year will get quota if they are in the unreserved or general category, Gujarat Chief Minister Anandiben Patel said on Friday. The decision was taken at

a meeting of the Gujarat BJP’s core group, which was attended by party chief Amit Shah. Quotas in Gujarat now add up to nearly 60 per cent, which exceeds the Supreme Court’s limit of 50 per cent. So far, scheduled castes and tribes and OBCs or Other Backward Castes enjoyed 49.5 per cent reservation in the state. The ruling BJP, say sources, sees the move as a political expedient even

though it may not stand legal scrutiny. The party has been under pressure over the Patidar agitation and its recent losses in civic polls in the state that is due for elections next year. The Patidar community has rubbished the move. “It’s a lollypop. It won’t stand in court of law and is an attempt to weaken our agitation,” said Nikhil Savani, convenor of the Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti.

Congress leader Digvijaya Singh’s daughter Karnika Singh died due to cancer in New Delhi on Friday. 37-year-old Karnika is the youngest among the four daughters of Singh. She was admitted in Max Hospital, Saket, a few days ago and breathed her last at around 5 AM. She had undergone treatment for the disease in the US as well. Congress President Sonia Gandhi, Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi along with senior party leader Ghulam Nabi Azad visited Singh at his residence located in 64 Lodhi Estate. Karnika’s body has been

Vaghela for 20% EBC quota, family income ceiling of Rs 12 lakh

Sunvilla News | Gandhinagar

Rejecting Gujarat BJP’s announcement to give 10% reservation quota to economically backward candidates in general category, leader of opposition Shri Shankersinh Vaghela today in a statement issued here said the ceiling of family income in EBC quota which has been kept Rs 6 lakh per year as per BJP announcement is not acceptable. It should be instead Rs 12 lakh income per family per year. Vaghela also said that 10% quota is not acceptable and it should be 20% instead.

Sedition law brings only disrepute to governments that brandish it

Hardik Patel is about to complete 200 days behind bars. The government has put him away for the better part of a year for sedition, because of the ostensible gravity and repeatability of his “offence”. Since these qualities remain unaltered, does it follow that his right to liberty stands suspended for all time? The continuing incarceration of Patel highlights yet again the absurdity of retaining Section 124A of the Indian Penal Code, which governs sedition, on the statute books. By all accounts, the young activist has demonstrated an appetite and enthusiasm for disturbing the calm, but criminal law is armed with numerous other provisions for dealing with such challenges. The demand for reservations raised by his Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti is political. Its methods are scarcely above reproach, but governments should engage with it politically, without reaching for magic bullets left over from the 19th century, like the sedition law. In this case — as is usually the case — the government’s response is completely out of proportion with the provocation, a video clip in which Hardik Patel is heard exhorting a supporter threatening suicide to kill some policemen instead. The strength of the police force was not thinned as a result, so this was just a case of Patel shooting his mouth off. But it was read as part of a “conspiracy” against the state, to “attempt to excite disaffection”. By that logic, a bunch of students grousing about the government would be seditious too. And so they were deemed to be. The arrest of Kanhaiya Kumar and his fellow travellers at JNU has been reviled as a direct attack on campuses and dissent. It has backfired, turning the student union leader into a celebrity of sorts, with an instant book deal thrown in. And yet, the government persists in believing that the charge of sedition is a handy cut-out switch to cow down inconvenient people. None of the celebrated sedition cases of recent years brought any credit to government. It failed to discredit Binayak Sen, Arundhati Roy and S.A.R. Geelani. Earlier this year, Ashis Nandy, who does not enjoy the material support of any political organisation, was forced to offer an apology for painting the Gujarat government in a poor light. But the government gained nothing by harassing the noted academic. It should appreciate that besides being colonial rather than democratic, Section 124A offers no tactical returns either. It is a loser on all counts.

The Man Who Knew Infinity review: More exotic than real Srinivasa Ramanujan was as much a Tamil as he was a mathematical prodigy. Indeed, he was a staunch Brahmin, in his mannerisms, speech and views, and if one were to alienate him from all these traits, the very character may well suffer. This is precisely where Matthew Brown’s movie on the mathematician, The Man Who Knew Infinity, seems to ring false, especially after Gnana Rajasekaran’s Tamil biopic on the genius, Ramanujan, had been seen in 2014. Rajasekaran had ably captured the intimate nuances of the Tamil Iyengar community. He had brought alive quite vividly the mood and essence of Ramanujan’s period, the stifling prejudices and so on. Take away all these from the man, he is as good as zero. Brown’s work somehow

Anushka Sharma was nowhere to be seen and that had raised many eyebrows while some reports even started doing the rounds which claimed that Anushka has been sidelined in the project. Nothing of that sort has actually happened and here’s proof. Anushka Sharma who also plays a wrestler in the film finally unveiled her look from the film in the second poster. Farhan has always blamed media for creating these linkups and controversies. This time, again Farhan has shown his anger towards media and he gave his support to Milkha Singh. Farhan has a great rapport with Milkha and he has even acted in the biopic Bhaag Milkha Bhaag. So, surely he will know Milkha Singh both on a personal and professional level. And, he said everyone is entitled to their opinion and so is Milkha Singh. Farhan strongly believes that Milkha didn’t say anything against Salman

Farhan brought to our notice that a lot of times statements are misquoted to create a controversy and wrong meanings are taken out of right statements to win the race of Trps. It’s part and parcel of showbiz but Farhan blaming media every time is not the solution either. When Salim Khan lashed out at Milkha Singh why didn’t he say that he had nothing against Salman Khan ? He preferred taking the credit for working hard in his life which is true but he even said that Bollywood didn’t do a favor for him by making a biopic based on him.

SETU Agency | Ahmedabad From common flu to hepatitis to cervical cancer, immunization can prevent a series of dangerous diseases in adults or reduce the intensity of others. Despite being recognized as a life saver, the practice of vaccination is yet to become commonplace in India to prevent diseases. In India, the concept of immunization is largely associated with children. Even the public awareness programs, such as for polio and chicken pox, primarily focus on immunization of children. However, not many people are aware about the fact that vaccinations can be useful at each and every stage of life from youth to advanced years. As per the statistics recorded by World Health Organization, immunization averts nearly 2-3 million deaths annually. Further, improved coverage of global immunization could help in avoiding an additional 1.5 million deaths. On the occasion World Immunization week, doctors at Columbia Asia Hospital, Ahmedabad have taken the initiative in line with WHO’s theme of “Close the immunization gap” to create awareness about importance of vaccination in all age groups.

People have done massive things for the country and for the Olympic sports as well. I would have liked someone like Abhinav Bindra, someone who could have been a great ambassador,” Indian batsman Gautam Gambhir said on Monday.

Dutee Chand shatters national 100m mark, misses Rio mark by 0.01 second Agency | New Delhi

Dutee Chand set the Nehru Stadium track ablaze by erasing the 15-yearold women’s 100m record on the opening day of the Federation Cup on Thursday. Dutee clocked 11.33 seconds to enter the record books. The previous record of 11.38 secs was set by Rachita Mistry in 2000. The Odisha sprinter wasn’t upset over missing the Rio qualification mark of 11.32 secs, but looked forward to Saturday’s 200m final. “My fitness is good, so posting another good timing shouldn’t be a challenging task,” she said. The Rio qualifying time in 200m is 23.20 secs. By setting a

national record, Dutee also proved her critics wrong. Her proposal to train in the US hasn’t been cleared by the government as sprinters aren’t expected to make a mark at the Olympics. Since then, she has been training in Hyderabad. Dutee’s confidence got a boost when she reached the 60m semifinals at the March 17-20 World Indoor Championships

at Portland, USA. Her coach N Ramesh said, “It made a lot of difference.” On a day marked by mediocre performances in the finals, another Odisha sprinter Amiya Mallick set the 100m record in men. He clocked 10.26 secs in the semis. The existing record of 10.30 secs was set by Abdul Najeeb Qureshi at the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games.

He has promised another knockout show but Indian boxing star Vijender Singh’s unbeaten run will be put through a tough challenge when he squares off against experienced Frenchman Matiouze Royer in a super middleweight contest in London on Saturday. But in Royer, he faces a rival who has the experience of 44 bouts, including 14 wins, which adds up to 250 rounds in the ring compared to Vijender’s nine. Royer’s career spans over seven

years and he will be looking to spoil the party for Vijender when he makes his second appearance on UK soil. The two will square off in Stratford’s Copper Arena and Vijender has said that his latest opponent does not look to be as timid as the ones he has faced so far. “From whatever I have

Sindhu will be disappointed to blow

Supreme Court gives relief to Gujarat executes more projects Amreli MP, no disqualification now but investment goes down Sunvilla News | Ahmedabad

Sunvilla News | Ahmedabad

Despite having implemented the highest number projects, Gujarat lagged behind states like Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka in terms of investment realised through implementation of industrial entrepreneurship memorandums (IEM) from January 2015 to March 2016. The state implemented 117 IEMs, the highest in India, but the investment stood at just Rs 8,474 crore. As against this, Maharashtra executed 82 IEMs worth Rs 53,438 crore followed by MP and Karnataka with 35 and 37 IEMs entailing investments of Rs 17,490

crore and Rs 15,581 crore respectively. IEMs are filed by compani es and industrial units with the ministry of commerce expressing their intention to either set up new units or expand existing ones. They also have to inform the ministry about commencement of operation. When it comes to investment, the other states which are

doing better than Gujarat might have got 2-3 big ticket projects. “But in terms of implementation we are way ahead. More IEMs mean more people are coming to set up projects in Gujarat,” said state’s finance minister Saurabh Patel. He further said that the conducive industrial environment in the state continues to attract people and projects.

Flipkart Challenges E-Commerce Entry Tax in Gujarat High Court

Correspondent | New Delhi

Gujarat High Court Thursday issued a notice to the state Government on a petition filed by the online retail major Flipkart against the entry tax in the state on the goods bought through the e-commerce portals. The division bench of Chief Justice R Subhash Reddy and Justice V M Pancholi scheduled the next hearing for June 9. Flipkart has claimed the tax is discriminatory, because no such tax is imposed on the goods brought into Gujarat through other modes of sale. It moved the HC after the Guja-

rat Government amended the law to levy entry tax on goods purchased through e-commerce portals, apparently to provide a level-playing field to the traders and retailers

in the state. The Gujarat Tax on Entry of Specified Goods into Local Areas (Amendment) Bill, 2016, was passed on March 31. Now 15 percent entry tax is levied on the online purchases. Flipkart’s contention is it does not sell any product itself but only provides an online platform to manufacturers/traders, so the tax is unjustified.

Amreli Lok Sabha MP and BJP leader Naranbhai Kachhadia has got relief from the Supreme Court. Kachhadia had challenged the High Court order and sought his conviction in lower court to be rejected. The Supreme Court has rejected the three-year jail term ordered to him by the Sessions court in Amreli and asked Kachhadia to pay Rs 5 lakh compensation to victim. Kachhadia was facing disqualification from the post of member of parliament after 3-year

term in criminal case ordered by the sessions court. However today’s decision by Supreme Court to reject conviction itself has given relief to Kachhadia. It should be mentioned that when Kachhadia challenged

the lower court verdict in Gujarat High Court, his arrest was stayed but conviction was not rejected. Kachhadia had therefore gone to Supreme Court to get conviction rejected in a bid to avoid disqualification.

Did you know Gujarat & Rajasthan passed Land Acquisition Bills?

Sunvilla News | Ahmedabad

Two consecutive drought years have already made farmers’ lives miserable in Rajasthan, and they believe, a third is on the way. However, the state’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government has passed two new land reform Bills that will impact farmers. This legislation is almost identical to the Centre’s Land Acquisition (amendment) Bill 2015, which was rejected by the farmers of the country. On April 6, the last day of its Budget Session, the Vasundhara Raje-led state government passed the Special Investment Region Bill and the

Land Pooling Scheme. This came barely a week after neighbouring state Gujarat had passed its own Land Acquisition Bill. Gujarat passed “Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement (Gujarat Amendment) 2016” on March 31, the last day of its Budget Session. A year ago, the BJP government at the Centre had introduced “The Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement (Amendment) Bill, 2015 (LARR)” in the Lok Sabha on February 24, 2015.
