Activist Varavara Rao’s bail plea rejected

Pune : A special court here Monday rejected the temporary bail application of activist and poet P Varavara Rao who is currently lodged in a prison here. Rao wanted temporary bail to visit his hometown to perform postdeath rituals of his sister-inlaw who died on April 22. However, the prosecution, objecting to the temporary bail to Rao, cited a letter to Pune’s Joint Commissioner of Police by Hyderabad Superintendent of Police (Special Intelligence Branch) which stated, “Considering seriousness of the crime, there is a possibility that accused may abscond if he is allowed attending the last rites of his relative”. “Moreover, there is a possibility of a serious attack on the police party, who will be deputed for an escort, by Naxals,” the letter added.

Chitrakoot : BJP president Amit Shah on Monday accused the Opposition of giving tickets to musclemen in Uttar Pradesh, asserting that their presence would not have any impact as the Adityanath government had been acting “tough” against them. Shah alleged that goons of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and the Samajwadi Party (SP) used to work as land mafias, claiming that ever since the “anti-land mafia squads” had been set up by the government led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the encroachment or illegal occupation of houses or land had stopped. The BJP has vehemently denied the charge. Last Monday, Mr Gandhi had said in an affidavit that he had falsely quoted the top court as “rhetorical flourish in the heat of political campaigning”, without having seen, read or analysed the order. A day later, senior Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi, acting as Mr Gandhi’s lawyer, requested that the case be closed. As former Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi, arguing on behalf of the BJP, objected, Mr Singhvi pointed out that the court had “not issued notice” to his client but only asked for an explanation.

New Delhi : Weeks after Union Minister Maneka Gandhi threatened to neglect places in Sultanpur that do not vote for her en masse in the Lok Sabha polls, the Election Commission today warned her against making remarks aimed at intimidating or bribing voters in the constituency. The election body ruled that the remarks were in violation of the Model Code of Conduct. On April 15, the BJP candidate had faced a 48-hour ban from campaigning for allegedly warning the Muslim community in Sultanpur that she will not work for those who fail to vote for her. Bengal battle reaches EC in Delhi Election officials said isolated cases of violence had been reported in the state that has witnessed over 52 per cent polling so far

New Delhi : The battle between the BJP and the Trinamool Congress in West Bengal’s Asansol and beyond reached the Election Commission in Delhi with the two parties blaming each other for poll violence in the fourth phase of voting. There were several reports of clashes in the early hours of polling. In Birbhum Lok Sabha constituency, news agency said clashes had broken out between supporters of rival parties in Nanoor, Rampurhat, Nalhati and Siuri areas. Election officials said isolated cases of violence had been reported in the state that has witnessed over 52 per cent polling so far. A jawan of the central police forces later had to fire once in the air in Poduma area Dubrajpur under Birbhum constituency to control the situation after villagers threw stones at the security personnel,

according to reports. In its representation to the Election Commission in Delhi, the Trinamool said the firing was designed to scare voters. Eight seats in south Bengal, considered the bastion of the ruling Trinamool Congress and chief minister Mamata Banerjee, are voting in this phase. The Trinamool holds six of the eight seats, the other

two were won by BJP’s Babul Supriyo (Asansol) and the Congress’s Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury (Baharampur) in 2014. The BJP repeated Union minister Babul Supriyo from Asansol. He is pitted against film star Sreemati Dev Varma, better known as Moon Moon Sen, who has been moved from the Bankura seat that she had won in 2014. Long before his party filed a formal complaint in Delhi, BJP leaders such as Babul Supriyo posted several photographs and videos on social media that accused local officials of colluding with Bengal’s ruling Trinamool Congress leaders. In one widely-circulated video, two men were spotted approaching people as they stood near the voting machine. The BJP said it looked like they were checking who the people had voted.

The next hundred years of commercial aviation

The year 2019 is the centenary year for KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, the longest running airline still in commercial existence. Organized air transport is a mere hundred years old, but it has seen tremendous change in that time from puddle-jumping in small planes to large building-sized planes ferrying billions of passengers over millions of miles each year. The last few months have brought some turbulence to air travel. Boeing’s “new and improved” short-range aircraft, the 737 MAX, has been grounded around the world after the second fatal crash in recent months. In India, Jet Airways, one of the major carriers has suspended services, adding chaos to a busy summer flying season. If just a few events can cause a flutter in air travel, what does the future hold? First, some background. The global airline industry today is made up of about 25,000 planes flying 4.5 billion passengers each year. The number of passengers has grown at about 6.5% a year for the last decade. Both passengers and aircraft are expected to double in the next twenty years. Future growth will come primarily in the Asia-Pacific region, with carriers forecast to increase to 18,000 or more planes in the next two decades. According to International Air Transport Association (IATA) estimates, China will overtake the US in two decades as the largest aviation market (defined as passengers to, from and within the country). India will rise from seventh to third position. These estimates have been made assuming a “constant global policies” scenario. If globalization is substantially reversed, then the growth rates will likely soften. The biggest airlines in the world today are Lufthansa, American, Delta, United, Emirates, Air France-KLM, China Southern and Air China. IndiGo, with about 43% domestic market share, is India’s largest airline. Jet Airways’ 15% market share is likely to be distributed among the different Indian airlines in the short term. In the medium term, the market share table will depend on what happens with the Jet Airways’ landing slots and the future of Air India. Jet’s landing slots in Mumbai and Delhi have been allocated to Indigo, Spice Jet, Vistara and Air Asia on a “temporary” basis currently. India’s flux comes at a time when passenger traffic increased nearly 20% in 2018. Large passenger aircraft are made by Boeing (US) and Airbus (Europe). Smaller aircraft are made by Embraer (Brazil) and Bombardier (Canada). With the 737 MAX’s rocky start, Boeing is likely to go ahead with the development of a new midsized airplane (NMA) nicknamed the Boeing 797. It will soon release a 777X wide-body line, that will eventually replace the legendary 747s. Airbus will counter with the A350 (wide body) and redesigned A330 (NMA). The future of commercial aviation is inexorably linked with the evolving business models of airlines and the future of aircraft. Demand for air travel is likely to remain strong—for domestic as well as international travel. There is no real option to get from one distant place to another. Airlines and airports are also major contributors to a flow of people and ideas, economic growth and jobs. Commercial aviation will therefore remain an imperative. Given the high capital costs, significant operating expenses and the price of aviation fuel, airline business models are always operating on the cusp between profit and loss. For the two decades ending 2013, airlines collectively destroyed value for their shareholders. Since that time, some airlines have had an impressive return on invested capital (Lufthansa, Ryanair and Southwest). In India, Indigo has shown a sustainable return on invested capital (RoIC) of about 25% over the last three years. As societal pressures on reducing the environmental footprint and enhancing safety continues, the cost of developing and building airplanes is likely to remain high. This state appears likely to continue—an inherently poor business model combined with robust and active demand. Airlines will need to focus on capital productivity and operating margins; by sweating their assets and improving load factors as well as by being efficient and charging for everything from luggage to food to seats - Kapilkumar M. Hirpara (ancillary income in aviEditor ation jargon).

International Dance Day: Sanya expresses she wants to do a dance film with Hrithik

Actor Sanya Malhotra talks about her passion for dance and also shares that the art form has helped her deal with the lows in her life.

New Delhi : She is the happiest when she is dancing, as much as she is while facing the arch lights. That’s Sanya Malhotra for you. Today, on International Dance Day, the Dangal (2016) actor talks about the good things related to the art form and how it has

changed her life. For those who don’t know, Sanya’s love for dance began at an early age. She was in school when she accompanied her mother’s best friend to a dance competition in Delhi. Coaxed by her aunt, she by chance participated in a show and left everyone mesmerised with her version of Tu Cheez Badi Hai Mast Mast (Mohra; 1994). “That day I knew I love dancing, more so because there was no stage fright at all. Then I became that kid who would dance at every family get together, parties or weddings. And mind you, I was famous too in those circles,” she says. Soon the hobby turned into passion, and Sanya trained herself in ballet, freestyle and jazz. On her to-do list is tap dancing and she also wants to learn a classical dance form. Those

who follow her on social media, it’s impossible to miss her dance videos and the kind of response they garner from her fans and colleagues alike. A latest video of her with rapper Naezy saw Hrithik Roshan commenting, “ O U T S TA N D I N G ” . Mention this to Sanya and she falls short of words to express her happiness. Asked if she wants to do a dance film with Hrithik any time soon? “That would be a dream come true,” she says,

Koi toh mujhse film mein dance karwao (Someone, please make me dance in a film). I want to see myself dancing on the big screen,” adds Sanya, who had choreographed her Dangal co-actor Aamir Khan for Secret Superstar (2017). On whether she is planning to post any special video for her fans on the occasion

of International Dance Day, Sanya says she is thinking of doing something with Naezy and choreographer Shazeb Sheikh. “Let me figure this out… It will be a surprise,” she keeps it at that. And any message that she wants to give out to her fans who aspire to pursue a career in dancing, Sanya is quick to add: “Dancing does make you happy. It has helped me deal with the hardships in my life. Not everyone is a good dancer but you just have to enjoy doing it. Dance as if no one is watching. You can be a part of a group or dance at home and even involve your family. Trust me, it’s fun. It’s a good exercise for your mind, body and soul. At times, I visit workshops and see even non-dancers having a good time. That’s the spirit. The happy hormones need to be generated.”

New Delhi : Rohit Sharma was fined of 15 per cent of his match fees for breaching the code of conduct following the KKR vs MI IPL 2019 clash on Sunday. The Mumbai Indians (MI) skipper hit the stumps with his bat after being adjudged legbefore wicket (LBW) after trying to loft KKR left-arm pacer Harry Gurney. Rohit Sharma, initially reviewed the decision and after he was given out, he demonstrated his disapproval by exchanging a

few words with the on-field umpire, culminating with him breaking the stumps. Chasing a score of 233 at the Eden Gardens, Rohit Sharma gave the Mumbai Indians a good start by smashing three boundaries early into his innings, before losing his wicket to Harry Gurney in the fourth over. Replays showed that the ball was just clipping leg stump as the Mumbai Indians captain reviewed the decision. During the hearing with the match referee after the game, Rohit Sharma accepted the sanction. “Rohit Sharma, the Mumbai Indians batsman and captain, was

Gujarat: Tur dal stock inspection begins after adulteration complaints

of the annual puja ritual of local deity Suleshwari. This festival has been organized in the village for many years.

Ahmedabad : The state government on Sunday began inspection of the tur dal stock stored at a marketing yard in Visavadar in Junagadh district following complaints of adulteration. The development comes three days after seven persons were booked after tur dal stocked in a warehouse in Keshod town of Junagadh was found to be adulterated. The Congress MLA from

Vi s a v a d a r h a d a l l e g e d on Saturday that tur dal procured by the Gujarat State Civil Supplies Corporation on behalf of the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (NAFED) was adulterated. He had also conducted a janta raid at a yard, and later held a protest at the district collectorate demanding action. On Sunday, a team of the Corporation along

with experts and graders, began inspection of the stock. “We are investigating the allegations. Eighteen thousand bags of tur dal lying at Visavadar will be checked to ascertain quality of the

stock. The process will take 2-3 days,” Manish Bhardwaj, MD of Gujarat State Civil Supplies Corporation, said. Procurement of tur dal was completed by the Corporation on April 14,

and the stocks were in the process of being sent to designated warehouses, when the irregularities in procurement in Keshod came to light. Ribadiya alleged that the dal stock was mixed with pebbles and other material. “Only 10 per cent of what was inside the sack was tur dal, while the rest was objects used for cattle feed. We demand that a thorough investigation be carried out across warehouses in Saurashtra,” he said. The tur dal stock in Visavadar was meant to be transported to warehouses in Gondal taluka, but this would be done only after the inspection is complete.

Surat: In a miraculous escape around 70 passengers of a Shirdi-bound bus from the Diamond City, Surat, survived when a bus transporting them was saved by trees, which prevented it from falling into a gorge. The natural flora served as a strong guard, thereby preventing any casualty. It was vertically held upright at the edge but passengers survived, sustaining minor bruises. The bus GJ04-Z-0933 had left from the city’s Sahara Darwaja and was passing though the hilly area of Dang district on serpentine roads, when it stopped on a steep and sharp turn on the MalegavSaputara stretch. Passengers told police that the driver made a wrong judgement in taking a turn and while he was trying to reverse, the

bus landed at the edge of the road. “It later started slipping into the valley but suddenly stopped due to some trees. Taking advantage of the situation, all the passengers got off the bus,” said a passenger. If not stopped by the trees the bus would have fallen into a 200-feetdeep gorge. In December, a bus with 90 school students, their parents and teachers fell

into a gorge near Subir of Dang. Total 10 persons died including seven students. “We are investigating how the accident happened. The driver escaped from the spot,” police informed. Rathod family, residents of Sahara Darwaja in city, hired the bus to go to Shirdi. They had hired a private transport bus to go with family and friends.

Population of Chausingha Gujarat: Trees prevent bus from falling Big cats of Gir facing a big problem: 26 lions and 5 cubs might deer increases at Umarva into gorge; all 70 passengers escape breeding centre in Narmada never be released back into the wild

Dhari : Big cats of Gir are facing a big problem. After being kept in captivity for more than six months following the outbreak of Canine Distemper Virus (CDV), 26 lions and 5 cubs might never be released back into the wild. Experts believe that their long captivity, prolonged interaction with humans and inability to hone natural instinct to hunt has reduced their chance of surviving in the wild. After the outbreak of Canine Distemper Virus in Dalkhaniya range ended up killing at least 30 lions between September and December, the forest department rounded up the big cats to check for signs of infection. The lions were sent to rescue centres, given vaccines imported from the US and kept under observation. According to sources, there are about five cubs in captivity along with adult lions. Cubs brought up in captivity have lower chances of being able to survive in the wild. As is their wont, lion mothers train their cubs to hunt in the wild as they grow. The cubs living and fed in captivity for over six months haven’t got the opportunity to learn and hone their natural traits of hunting, unlike those living in the Gir. This makes them ill-equipped to catch prey, feed themselves and survive in the wild. Wildlife experts say not just cubs, but adult lions too may find it difficult to adapt

to forest environment back again after such a prolonged stay in captivity. The authorities have not yet set a date for the release of the captive lions and cubs in Gir. However, Chief Conservator of Forest D T Vasavada says the lions are healthy and doing well. Principal Chief Conservator of Forest and Wildlife Warden A K Saxena told Mirror, “The lions have been vaccinated, so we need to follow a certain protocol before releasing them. They have to be kept under observation for long periods as medical teams need to check their immunity and analyse other effects of vaccines. Also, certain medical tests have to be carried out to check whether or not these big cats have started producing antibodies naturally.” Cubs may have to remain captive for much longer, perhaps all life, as they have learnt to be fed artificially, Saxena added.

Man fined for spitting pan masala at public space in Gujarat

Ahmedabad : The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) recently fined a man Rs 100 for spitting the residue of pan masala at a public space. The man, identified as Mahesh Kumar, was caught spitting on CCTV camera. Kumar, who hails from Ahmedabad’s eastern suburb of Naroda, was caught spitting pan masala on CCTV camera near Sardar Patel Statue Road. The civic body issued an e-memo against Kumar for violating public health laws. The AMC, in its press release, said that this is the first such case in the country. Ahmedabad was recently selected as the top city in a national cleanliness survey. In a similar incident reported in September 2018, a man had rammed his luxury four-wheeler into a divider while trying to spit gutkha (chewing tobacco) from his moving vehicle. Greater Noida police while confirming the incident had told a national daily that the victim was alone in the car at the time of the incident. A security guard who was a

witness of the incident said that he saw the driver of the Jaguar vehicle peeped his head out to spit ‘gutkha/pan’ masala. At a speed of around 120 km/h, he lost control of the car and rammed it into the divider, added the eyewitness. The man was rushed to the hospital immediately where he succumbed to his injuries.

Narmada : Narmada district of Central Gujarat has 43% forest cover. The district has emerged as a major tourist destination with completion of the Statue of Unity – the tallest statue in the world. Ahmedabad woman alleges torture for giving birth to girls

Ahmedabad : Seema Parmar of Nikol on Saturday filed a complaint with the Mahila East Police station stating that she was abandoned by her husband for giving birth to baby girls. Parmar has alleged that when she became pregnant for the third time her husband Kuldeep Parmar — of Bikaner in Rajasthan — threatened her that this time if she gave birth to a girl, he would not take her back. However, Parmar gave birth to a boy which prompted her in-laws to take her back but after a few months they began demanding Rs 5 lakh as dowry and abandoned her once again. Parmar now lives alone in a rented house in Ahmedabad. According to the complaint, the Parmars married in 2009 in Porbandar. “She gave birth to two girls. One is eight years old and the other is seven,” said a police

official. “According to the FIR, the fact that she gave birth to two girls infuriated her husband, her fatherin-law Purshottam, her mother-in-law Parvati, her brother-in-law Yogesh, and her sisters-in-law Bhumika and Doly.” According to the complaint, the in-laws told Parmar to get money to raise her daughters. “The FIR says that her in-laws used to torture her mentally and physically for not giving birth to a boy,” the official said. Eight months after she became pregnant for

the third time, her in-laws went out of station and her husband forcibly dropped at her parental house. “When Parmar gave birth to a boy, her in-laws took her back but continued to torture her for dowry,” the official said. She has mentioned in the FIR that in March 2018, her husband sent her baggage to her parents’ house and told them that he would join her later. However, he did not show up. Police said Parmar and her elder brother Krishna went to Bikaner in April and with the help of cops brought her children back. “She tried all means to strike a compromise and save her marriage. When she realized that her husband does not want her back, she approached us and lodged a complaint under sections dealing with physical torture against her in-laws,” the official said.

Vasava conducted his own probe at the two godowns in

Kalol and Kalol GIDC. The probe revealed that there was a deficit of 7,426 kg wheat, 1,350 kg of rice, nine quintal sugar and three tins of cottonseed. The missing stock worth over Rs 3.4 crore was of the financial year 2018-19. Suresh also told police that when he checked the physical records, he learnt that the accused had mentioned the total stock quantity of 1,626 metric tonne against the available capacity of 950

metric tonne. Thus there was negligence on the part of Parmar and Deval, the internal auditors. Police said that earlier deputy managers committed supervisory lapse as they never conducted proper check and inspection of available stock and capacity during inspection. “If proper inspection would have been done, then the irregularities could have been unearthed,” said a police official.

Sufficient water for drinking purpose till July-end for entire State: Gujarat government

Gandhinagar : Speaking to media persons, Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel today said Gujarat has enough water to supply for drinking water till the end of the month of July this year. He said the situation is better than last year when the State had to source water from underground tunnel of Narmada dam as early as in the month of February. Nitin Patel announced statewide 1916 toll-free number for assistance regarding drinking water supply. Nitin said, daily 375 crore litre Narmada water is supplied to 8,911 villages, 165 towns and 6 municipal corporation areas to 4 crore citizens. He said 263 localities in 258 villages across 62 talukas are supplied water through 1561 trips of 361 tankers this summer. He said district collectors are told to respond to any fresh demand of water tanker on immediate basis and make necessary arrangement in upcoming two months of summer – May and June. ‘The model code of conduct was strict till we had polling in the State. However we have requested the Election Commission to relax the imposition of model code of conduct

now so far as the issues are drinking water supply, tube well, hand pump, group water supply projects and power connection to water infrastructure is concerned. ‘Narmada dam has sufficient water for supply for drinking purpose this year. One million acre ft water is received in catchment area of Sardar Sarovar dam. The month of April is over. We have supplied irrigation water in command area during the monsoon and winter. 509 ponds are filled with water through Sujalam Sufalam network for the needs of cattle. About 4 crore citizens of Gujarat will continue to get secured drinking water supply till the end of the month of July and there’s no reason to worry. Some tribal areas, jungle and forest areas have some issues regarding dry hand pumps but as the model code of conduct imposition is not as strict as it was till polling, the problem is being solved,’ said Nitin Patel. He said Rs. 125 crore pipeline, filtration and pumping plant for Porbandar town and district was approved before the imposition of model code of conduct. ‘A new pipeline is laid at a cost of Rs. 120 crore. It is 64 km long located between Upleta and Ranavav. It will start supplying water regularly in next two-three days. Currently trial run is on for daily 2 crore litre water supply. The works for filtration and chlorination are underway,’ he said.
