Kolkata court awards : 3 others get life imprisonment

Kamduni : 3 sentenced to death the girl took place when she was returning home at Kamduni, about 50 km from Kolkata, in North 24 Parganas district after appearing for an examination at her college on June 7, 2013. The second year BA student was pulled

into a farm when she was walking back home along a deserted road after alighting from a bus. She was subsequently gangraped and murdered. Her mutilated body was found the next morning in a corner of the farm. The incident had sparked widespread outrage in the state amidst serious concerns over women’s safety. Judge Sarkar pronounced the verdict after hearing the arguments of defence counsel Firoze Edulji and T Ghosh against handing out of death sentence to the three convicts. Claiming

that there had been more heinous crimes in which convicts had been spared the death sentence by different courts, including the Supreme Court, Edulji submitted that they be given long jail terms. Appearing for the prosecution, counsel Dipak Ghosh said the circumstances in which the victim died and the nature of injuries to her private parts that led to tearing up of her legs be considered while handing out the sentence. He stated that the convicts had shown no repentance for the crime, while pleading for the death penalty.

Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif for the first time has said that the terror strike on Pathankot airbase affected the dialogue process with India, reports said on Saturday. “Talks with India were progressing but the Pathankot attack has affected the dialogue process,” Sharif was quoted as saying by the media. India has accused that Maulana Masood Azhar, chief of Pakistan-based terror group Jaish-e-Mohammad chief, is responsible for plotting the Pathankot attack and given several proofs against him. India has given “specific and actionable information” to Pakistan soon after the Pathankot attack reportedly carried

out by JeM terrorists on January 2 that killed seven Indian soldiers. Pakistan, however, is yet to any action against Azhar or JeM operatives even three weeks after the attacks. Following the attacks, India and Pakistan agreed to postpone scheduled diplomatic talks till the end of January. Pakistan on Thursday had said it expects India to go ahead with a planned meeting of the foreign secretar-

ies and called on New Delhi not to indulge in a blame game because it undermines efforts to counter terrorism. Pakistan high commissioner Abdul Basit said during a television interview in New Delhi that the two sides had acted maturely after the terror strike on Pathankot airbase and not disrupted their engagements. “I do not see any reason as to why the talks should not happen,” he had said.

20-year-old woman gangraped in UP

Three convicts of the sensational Kamduni gangrape and murder of a 20-year-old college student over two years back were sentenced to death by a city court while three others got life imprisonment on Saturday. Additional Sessions Judge Sanchita Sarkar handed out capital sentence to Aminul Ali, Saiful Ali and Ansar Ali, while Imanul Islam, Aminul Islam and Bhola Naskar were sentenced to life imprisonment for the gangrape and brutal murder of the woman on June 7, 2013.

Rejecting arguments for not giving death sentence to the three, who were found guilty of gangrape and murder, by their lawyers claiming it could not be termed as the rarest of rare crime, the judge pronounced the sentences at 3.40 pm. The judge called out the names of each of the convicts, who were produced in

the packed court room, before pronouncing the sentences. Saiful Ali, Ansar Ali and Aminul Ali were found guilty under sections 376(d) (gangrape), 302 (murder), 376A (inflicting injury which causes death of a woman) and 120B (criminal conspiracy) of IPC. Angelique Kerber became the first German to win a grand slam title since her childhood idol Steffi Graf in 1999 when she upset world number one Serena Williams 6-4 3-6 6-4 to clinch the Australian Open on Saturday. The 34-year-old American had been seeking her seventh Melbourne Park title and 22nd overall, which would have moved her into a tie with Graf for the most grand slam singles titles in the Open era. The seventh seeded Kerber, however, was not

overawed by the occasion of her first grand slam final, breaking twice in the first set as Williams made 23 unforced errors. Williams cut down on the errors to send it into a third, which Kerber, who had the opportunity to serve it out while leading 5-3

only for the American to battle back, clinched when Williams hit a volley long in the next game. The opening salvo had looked ominous as Williams raced through the first game to love and then put pressure on the German, who was

down 15-30 after a double fault but managed to suppress any demons she may have had and held on. The 28-year-old German then played superb defensive tennis against the powerful Williams, scrambling to force her to play an extra shot that ultimately contributed to 23 unforced errors from the American in the first set. Those errors and a lack of timing on several potential winners enabled the German to break again in the seventh game and then seal the first set in 39 minutes when Williams made another unforced error.

Equality before law must be accompanied by equality in social practices

The two fundamental axes of social inequality in India are caste and gender. Caste distinctions were central to orthodox Hinduism. Their influence was so pervasive that they carried over even when people converted to faiths based on more egalitarian principles. In India, Muslims and Christians also practised (and often still practise) caste-based discrimination. As for gender, Hinduism is notable for having many women represented in its pantheon. However, while there are women deities, until very recently there were no women priests. Successive shankaracharyas have argued that women are not authorised to read or interpret sacred texts. In Islam, the discrimination is arguably even greater, with no women priests of course, and often, segregated worship as well. The religious texts of Hinduism and Islam are also heavily loaded in favour of patriarchy. No doubt, through selective quotations from the Quran or the Vedas, one can claim they respected or even revered women, but taken as a whole, there is no question that Hinduism and Islam are both religions where men are held to be superior, and thus mandated to dominate family, society and community life. A major challenge to religious discrimination was the bhakti movement. Poets such as Tukaram and Eknath in Maharashtra, Kabir and Mira in north India, and the Alvars of the Tamil country, preached (and practised) what we might call equality in the eyes of god. In the orthodox tradition, scripture was interpreted only by authorised male priests; while low castes were excluded from places of worship. The bhakti movement challenged this orthodoxy by arguing that individuals did not need priestly instruction to forge their own path to the divine. In approaching god, said (or sang) the bhakti poets, personal devotion and faith mattered more than social status or family position. I have been reading a fine book on the 15th-century bhakti poet, Narasinha Mehta, written by the literary scholar Neelima Shukla-Bhatt. A living presence in his native Gujarat, where his poems are still read and his songs still sung, Narasinha was also a considerable influence on Mahatma Gandhi. He composed “Vaishnava Jana To”, Gandhi’s favourite hymn, and also first used the term “Harijan”. Gandhi took these traditions of heterodoxy further and deeper. Through the 1920s and 1930s, he campaigned against untouchability, evoking horror and anger among sants and shankaracharyas but much support among modern-minded Hindus. Meanwhile, from the other end of the social spectrum, Ambedkar was conducting his own heroic struggle against caste discrimination.

Arjun Kapoor feels homemakers are not given their due in the society and the actor says his upcoming film “Ki & Ka” will begin conversations about them. In the R Balki-directed movie, the 30-year-old actor plays a homemaker while his wife (Kareena Kapoor) goes to work. “The film deals with a boy who believes housewives have not got their due. If you don’t have stability in your personal life through your partner then you cannot achieve anything professionally,” Arjun said in an interview. “Housewives run the home and sacrifice a lot but many people forget that. The guy in the film wants to be a home maker because he

The actor said the romantic movie “very sweetly” also deals with the issue of gender inequality.“The conversation we have initiated in ‘Ki & Ka’ has been bubbling over a long time in offices, at home. Agency | New Delhi Actor Suniel Shetty wants the government to take measures for the film industry like providing subsidies for building theatres and for the industry to be recognised like other industries, in order to take it to an international level. Present at a cricket match for differently-abled by an NGO, Suniel was asked about his expectations from the Budget for the entertainment industry. “If you are setting up a theatre, then according to me you should get subsidies because eventually we are short of theatres. And even from the entertainment tax point of view,

measures are needed,” he replied. “Our industry should be genuinely recognised as an industry where there should be insurance, provident fund, retirement plans. If you see from workers’ point of view, our industry workers are the only ones who are ready to work for 24 hours or even 30 hours,” the actor added. ”So I hope the government keeps this in mind that not only Bollywood but Indian cinema is a connect with the rest of the world. When you say India, people say Bollywood. I think because of this reason, it is important that it gets an industry status,” the actor said.

Agency | New Delhi So the much-talked about video of Coldplay’s ‘Hymn for the Weekend’ from their album A Head Full of Dreams is out and it looks more like a Westerner’s stereotype of India than anything else. Oh and Sonam Kapoor, who said it was a ‘huge honour to be part of the video’, is barely there for five seconds.

It’s a stretch to even call it a cameo. She had said: “I love Coldplay’s music and so does the world. It was a huge honour to be a part of the video. It’s a great concept and I had a lot of fun shooting for it.” The actress had earlier said that she had shot for a day at the Golfa Devi Temple in Worli and the Vasai Fort. I guess the director agrees with us about Sonam’s acting

skills. It also looks like Chris thought Beyonce was too visible in the video and got threatened, because we barely hear her, eventhough we are told she lent her vocals to the song. Sonam does appear in the very end and I guess the only reason they didn’t edit her out completely is because her father was part of an Oscar-winning India-themed movie.

After seeing this year’s list of Padma awardees, actor Kader Khan says it’s ‘good’ that he did not get one and hinted that ‘flattering’ could be one of the reasons for his colleagues being chosen for the honour. Kader Khan, 79, said in an exclusive interview, “It’s good that they did not give me a Padma Shri. I have neither flattered anyone in my life, nor will I ever. I don’t want these awards if they have been given to people who got it this time. An award is a no big thing, but its importance lies in the people it has been conferred upon”. “Earlier, there was a certain honesty in these awards but it’s not the same case now. People have now forgotten to

West Indies have taken a gamble by naming Sunil Narine in their squad for the World Twent20 tournament in March as the off-spinner is currently suspended from bowling in international cricket due to an illegal action. The 27-year-old was reported to the International Cricket Council (ICC) during a one-day series in Sri Lanka last November and was later sanctioned after an independent assessment found his elbow extended beyond the maximum limit of 15 degrees. Considered an asset to the side, Narine was also initially selected for last year’s 50-over World

Cup but later withdrawn, and has been working on his action in a desperate attempt to get it cleared in time for the World Twenty20 in India. All-rounder Darren Sammy will lead the world’s top-ranked T20 side, which includes 11 players from the contingent that won the last World Cup in Sri Lanka four years ago. The 15man squad will assem-

All-rounder Shane Watson will lead the Australian team in the third and final Twenty20 match against India, in Sydney on Sunday, in the absence of injured skipper Aaron Finch. Watson’s appointment followed a recommendation by the National Selection Panel that was approved by Cricket Australia’s Board of Directors. “It is an honour to be asked to lead the side on Sunday, although the circumstances are far from ideal. The team headed by Catherine Davis, clinical health psychologist at Georgia-based Augusta University, looked at passive smoke exposure in 220 overweight or obese boys and girls in the US. The team found smoke exposure associated with nearly all measures of adiposity in the children, including bigger bellies and overall fat. “The take-home message is that for these children, smoke exposure was connected to two major adverse health outcomes, one above the neck and one below the neck,” Davis said. “And every single one of our cognitive measures was poorer in the smoke-exposed children.” Percentages of body fat in smoke-exposed children were substantially higher than in their also heavy peers, further amplifying their risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes and more, Davis said in a paper published in the journal Childhood Obesity. While previous studies have shown a relationship between overweight and reduced cognitive function, this research found passive smoke had an impact on cognition too that was independent of fat or socioeconomic status.

Heena Sidhu had dominated the field and Kynan Chenai had toiled for his quota in the

last two days. Paul and Ghatkar popped eyeballs and won hearts. Paul (23), four years junior, ended with the Olympic quota, but rarely has any event in India looked in such fine fettle as when the two girls got cracking on their shots. The final mark of 205 – with the Iranian winning gold – might not point to a high-scoring final, but no one in the range on Friday could’ve asked for more from the two home girls who made the finals with scores of 418.8 (Paul) and 415.6 (Ghatkar).

The Gujarat Government’s Attempt to Target a Police Officer Has Backfired, Badly Sunvilla News | Ahmedabad

This is the conclusion reached by the Central Administrative Tribunal (Ahmedabad Bench) in its judgment quashing the departmental charge sheet against the retired Indian Police Service officer Rahul Sharma. The charges stemmed from the Gujarat government’s attempt to take action against him for having submitted incriminating call data records from Ahmedabad during the period of the 2002 riots before the Nanavati Commission of Inquiry. The trumped up charge against Sharma fell somewhere between destruction of evidence

In exonerating Rahul Sharma and criticising the government for wrongfully targeting the former police officer, the CAT has shone a spotlight on the state’s lack of interest in punishing the perpetrators of the 2002 riots

and its fabrication but lacked any substance and failed to withstand proper scrutiny. But though the Gujarat government failed to make out a case against the police officer, its ham-handed efforts at

persecuting him for actually trying to serve the cause of justice will only strengthen the suspicion that it has something to hide. It was a matter of record that the police had sought the records

of all calls made from Ahmedabad by certain individuals during the relevant period. However, this information was subsequently ‘misplaced’. Much to the consternation of the Gujarat government – which was headed by Narendra Modi as chief minister at the time – it turned out that Rahul Sharma, who had received a set of the CDRs, kept a copy, analysed them and produced this data before the Nanavati Commission.

Eclipse over solar power in Gujarat

ary 14, 2016, as against 1000.05 MW on May 29, 2015. During the period, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu and Madhya Pradesh added 216.9 MW, 270.96 MW and 115 MW respectively. “In case of Gujarat, the aggression for solar energy is missing. Despite Gujarat Electric-

ity Regulatory Commission (GERC) and state government’s decision, even no-objection certificates (NOC) are not being issued to installed projects (both roof top and off-grid solar power projects) by state discoms such as Uttar Gujarat Vij Company,” said Pranav

Mehta, co-chairman, Global Solar Council, an international solar energy body representing 120 solar countries. Rajasthan, relatively a late entrant in solar power generation, has raced ahead Gujarat. “State after state is getting aggressive for the spread and growth of solar. Rajasthan has reduced open access charges by 50% to attract investment and the policy is yielding results for Rajasthan,” added Mehta, who is also the chairman the chairman of National Solar Energy Federation of India.

However, more than a month after his demise, Chauhan’s body is yet to reach his mourning family members, said Jatin Desai, general secretary, Pakistan-India Peoples’ Forum for Peace & Democracy (PIPFPD). “The 55-year old fisherman was arrested by the Pakistan authorities when his boat strayed into that country’s territorial waters. It is more than five weeks since his death and his body is lying in the Edhi Foundation’s morgue in Karachi,”

Desai said. Lamenting that such long delays is the usual practice whenever an Indian or Pakistani fisherman dies in the prison of the other country, he appealed to both governments to take steps to expedite such cases. “PIPFPD strongly feels that this practice should be changed immediately and a decision be made that on humanitarian grounds, the body of the deceased must be sent to his/her country in the very next available flight,” Desai urged.

will consider in the interest of farmers,” Patel said. On January 27, the National Commodities and Derivatives Exchange (NCDEX) had suspended futures trading in all running castor seed contracts to “maintain market equilibrium, safeguard market integrity and in general interest of commodities market”. Gujarat and Rajasthan have the highest castor production in the country, Patel said, adding that Gujarat alone produces 90 per cent of India’s castor seeds. “Farmers of both these states have

not been getting their due prices for the last three years. The price today has fallen much below the cost of production for the farmer, which is around Rs 6,000 per quintal. “Decline in prices to the extent of 48 per cent could have been averted if preemptive measures and prompt decision to suspend the contract was taken by the exchange,” Patel said. Castor is a domestic monopoly crop as it is hardly grown out of India and the country can earn a lot of foreign exchange from its exports, he said.

After having lost out its numero uno position to Rajasthan in solar power space, Gujarat seems to have further lagged behind in capacity addition. The home state of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has been promoting solar energy in a big way, could add only 24 MW of solar power generation capacity during June 2015 to January 2016. As against this, Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu added more than 200 MW in the same period. As per data released by the Union ministry of new and renewable energy, Gujarat added 24 MW of total commissioned capacity (grid connected) to 1024.15 MW as on Janu-

Gujarat High Court stays order Water shortage hits rabi sowing in Saurashtra over Sardar Sarovar bonds Sunvilla News | Ahmedabad

The Gujarat High Court has stayed its judgment of January 15 for a period of eight weeks giving time to the Gujarat state and Sardar Sarovar Nigam Ltd (SSNL) to appeal against the judgment in the Supreme Court. On January 15, the HC said that it was beyond the legal jurisdiction of the state legislature in conferring the right to SSNL for lowering the committed rate of interest and seeking premature redemption of a deep discount bond issue. dna was the first to report on the judgment that termed the state-legislature enactment “ultra-vires” on January 21 before the copy was made available on pub-

lic domain 10 days later. After the pronouncement of the order an oral plea was made by the Advocate General and senior counsel, Mihir Joshi, requesting the operation of judgment to be stayed for some time so as to enable the Gujarat government and SSNL to approach the higher forum. The requested was granted on the same day of the judgment. A detailed understanding of the order released on the public domain now reveals only

investors who have accepted the redemption amount under protest and subsequently filed the petition before the HC can now approach the civil court for recovery. The case dates back to SSNL’s Rs 250-crore IPO through 20-year deep discount bonds in November 1993. The money was raised to fund the Sardar Sarovar dam project. The bonds were backed by a state guarantee and priced at Rs 3,600 with redemption value of Rs 1.11 lakh at the end of the tenure. For the company, the outflow at the end of the 20-year tenure was estimated at Rs 7,500 crore but it subsequently changed the terms of agreement and forced early redemption at lower rates.

Lack of adequate water supply has already put a dent in rabi crop cultivation in Gujarat. Data released by the state’s agriculture department shows a 39% drop in land cultivated for rabi crop this season in Saurashtra. Overall, rabi sowing is down by 1.65 lakh hectares or 14% of the 33.68 lakh hectares cultivated in 2015. North Gujarat, which relies on Narmada canals, has witnessed only a slight increase in rabi sowing - from 10.58 lakh hectares to 10.82 lakh hectares. Region-wise, sowing was poorest in Saurashtra, at only 60.68% of fields cultivated for rabi crops as compared to 2015. In Saurashtra, instead of 9.04 lakh hectares usually tilled during rabi season,

this year, only 5.50 lakh hectares have been used for rabi crop cultivation. The reason, said officials, is the shortage of water in dams. Officials of the agriculture department said that usually water in the check dams lasts till early December. But this year, due to erratic rains, farmers were forced to withdraw water during August and September leaving check dams empty by mid-October. Crop choice, observed officials, have also changed and there was a 100% increase in sowing of fennel seeds, while both potato and onion - essential for the kitchen - witnessed increase in sowing. This year, 11.24 lakh hectares of land have been used for potato crops, against the 8.16 lakh hectares used on an average.

Over 500 literary writers, thinkers launch ‘Sarva Bhasha Samvad’ conclave Correspondent | Vadodara

An Indian man who hailed from the state of Gujarat was reportedly shot dead in Los Angeles in the United States. Mitesh Patel, 33, was killed when he stepped out of his store in Los Angeles. He reportedly hailed from the Anand district in Gujarat. Several Indians have been shot dead in the United States in recent years, as the country grapples with the problem of gun violence.

Last April, another Gujarati man Sanjay Patel was shot dead at a gas station in Connecticut where he was working as a clerk during a robbery attempt. In June 2015, a 23-yearold man from Hyderabad was shot dead in Florida in a mugging attempt after he reportedly refused to give the attacker his iPhone. Indians make the third-largest ethnic group in the US, and are among the richest communities in the country.

Over 500 literary writers, artists and thinkers from across the country gathered at Dandi in Navsari district of Gujarat to mark Martyrs’ Day on January 30 and launch the “Sarv Bhasha Samvad” conclave, as part of a journey called “Dakshinayan”, cogitating ways to restore healthy public “debate” in the country that has become “vicious”, in recent times. The writers, led by Professor Dr Ganesh Devy of Vadodara, met in a “voluntary, apolitical” activity on the death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, in order to begin a “non-violent” approach to “safeguard-

ing free expression” in the country. Although the writers were interrupted by police on their way to Dandi, in Navsari due to a simultaneous agitation by the Patidar group, the writers met at the auditorium of the Navsari Agriculture University, where eminent speakers, including Gandhi’s grandson, Rajmohan, addressed the gathering. The event also saw writers rallying

around the families of slain literary activists, Govind Pansare, MM Kalburgi and Narendra Dabholkar – who expressed their firm resolve to “continue” the incomplete works of the departed writers. The event also saw thinkers terming the recent suicide of Hyderabad research scholar Rohit Vemula, “unfortunate” and an “outcome of the tough times” in the country.

A Gujarati family anxiously awaits the day when they will be finally able to see their head of family Vaaga Chauhan for the last time, nearly 40 days after he passed away in a hospital in Pakistan’s port city of Karachi. Indian fisherman Vaaga Chauhan, hailing from Saurashtra region of Gujarat, died following an illness in a Karachi hospital on December 22, an activist group claimed on Saturday.

Kisan Sangh demands delisting of castor seeds from futures trade Sunvilla News | Ahmedabad

After suspension of castor seeds futures trade by NCDEX, the Gujarat unit of Bharatiya Kisan Sangh (BKS) today sought delisting of the commodity from futures trading and said the Centre should introduce MSP for it. BKS also demanded that all agriculture commodities should be delisted from futures trading in the interest of the farmers of the country. “We welcome the decision of NCDEX to suspend the futures trading of castor seed. We had been persistently making the demand for delisting of castor seed since 2012 and have made representations about it to the central government and NCDEX,” BKS state president Maganbhai Patel said. “Now we are waiting for our demand of introduction of MSP (minimum support price) to be fulfilled, which we are hopeful that the government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi
