The rupee depreciated 10 paise to 81.69 against the US dollar in early trade on Monday, weighed down by significant foreign fund outflows. At the interbank foreign exchange, the domestic unit opened weak at 81.69 against the dollar, registering a decline of 10 paise over its last close. In the previous session on Friday, the rupee settled at 81.59 against the American currency. Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback’s strength against a basket of six currencies, fell 0.01 per cent to 101.92. Brent crude futures, the global oil benchmark, declined 0.17 per cent to USD 86.51 per barrel. The focus on the Union Budget and the US Federal Reserve’s policy decision will dictate the course for the local unit on Monday, traders said. “Asian and emerging market peers have started with gains and could aid investor sentiments. However, demand from importers and the Reserve Bank of India’s presence could cap gains,” said Sriram Iyer, Senior Research Analyst at Reliance Securities. On the domestic macroeconomic front, India’s forex reserves increased by USD 1.727 billion to USD 573.727 billion in the week ended January 20, the RBI said on Friday. This is the second consecutive week of rise in the kitty. In the domestic equity market, the 30-share BSE Sensex was trading 30.72 points or 0.05 per cent higher at 59,361.62.

In the broader market, the BSE MidCap and SmallCap indices declined up to 0.34 per cent. Meanwhile, among sectors, the Nifty Metal index was the top NSE gainer, up 1 per cent; while the Nifty Oil and Gas index was the top NSE loser, down 4 per cent. Veteran comedian in the Kannada film industry Mandeep Roy passed away in Bengaluru due to cardiac arrest on Sunday morning, family sources said. He was 74. The senior actor, who had acted in over 500 movies, was undergoing treatment following a heart attack at a private hospital where he breathed his last, the family sources said.

According to actor and director Venkat Bharadwaj, Mandeep Roy was a Bengali who had settled in Bengaluru and acted in the Kannada film industry.

National Stock Exchange of India (NSE) has once again emerged as the world largest derivatives exchange in 2022 by number of contracts traded based on statistics maintained by Futures Industry Association (FIA), a derivatives trade body. NSE is ranked 3rd in the world in equity segment by number of trades (electronic order book) in 2022, an advancement from previous year when it ranked 4th as per statistics maintained by the World Federation of Exchanges (WFE). The calendar year witnessed the benchmark equity index –the Nifty 50 touching lifetime high of 18,887.60. Significant strengthening in liquidity was witnessed in most of the product categories including equity, equity derivatives and currency derivatives. In the equity segment, Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) daily average turnover stood at Rs 470 crores in CY2022, an increase of 51% YoY. Sovereign Gold Bonds daily average turnover in secondary market stood at Rs 7 crores in CY 2022, an increase of 59% YoY. Government securities which have been made available in equity segment of NSE is also seeing significant growth, albeit on a lower base with volumes touching daily average turnover of Rs 3 crores in last month.

While India observes Shaheed Diwas on multiple occasions across the year, 30th January is dedicated specially to Mahatma Gandhi as it marks his death anniversary. On this day, Zee TV actors like Ashi Singh from Meet, Pulkit Bangia from Kumkum Bhagya, Aman Gandhi from Bhagya Lakshmi and Manav Gohil from Main Hoon Aparajita open up about their thoughts about the Father of the Nation and praise his contribution to the Freedom of India. Ashi Singh, who essays the role of Meet Hooda in Zee TV’s Meet mentioned, “A lot of people don’t know but Shaheed Diwas or Martyr’s Day is observed on 30th January every year in the memory of Mahatma Gandhi. Every year on this day, the President, the Vice President, the Prime Minister, and the Defence Minister of India gather at Mahatma Gandhis Samadhi in Rajghat and pay a tribute to him by placing a flower garland on his statue. Growing up, I have seen several leaders pay tribute to Gandhi ji, who fought with non-violence to free India from the Britishers. There are special programmes that used to run on the day about the late freedom fighter too. My family and I used to watch these special episodes and they were very informative. I believe we should always remember the sacrifices and the determination of Mahatma Gandhi, who gave his life for India independence, welfare, and development. He truly was and is the Father of the Nation.”
