lashed the Valley during past few days,” a J&K government spokesman said. Two NDRF teams comprising 100 personnel have already been rushed by an IAF plane from Bhatinda in Punjab to Srinagar. situation and eight NDRF teams will be rushed to the state immediately from New

Pakistan arrests 18 Indian fishermen, seizes 3 boats Agency : Karachi Pakistani authorities have arrested 18 Indian fishermen and seized their three boats for allegedly violating the country's territorial waters. The fishermen were arrested by Pakistan's Maritime Security (PMS) forces last night in the Arabian Sea off the Karachi coast, Geo News reported. No official of the PMS was available to confirm the arrests. Normally Indian fishermen

arrested by the PMS are handed over to the Docks police after initial interrogation and then they are produced before a judicial magistrate. India and Pakistan routinely arrest fishermen on charges of entering each other's waters as the maritime boundaries between the two countries were poorly defined and many fishing boats lack the technology to be certain of their precise location. Many fishermen languish in jail for

months even after completing their prison terms. Governments of both countries have from time to time released these fishermen from their jails as a goodwill gesture. Last month Pakistan released 172 Indian fishermen as a goodwill gesture after Prime Minister Narendra Modi telephoned his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif, informing him about Foreign Secretary S. Jaishankar's visit to Pakistan.

Delhi, Patna and other places. The Union Cabinet Secretary asked the NDRF to keep necessary equipment and more boats ready should a need arise to send them at a very short notice to the Valley or any other part of the state for rescue operations, the spokesman said. The NDRF teams will be stationed in South, Central and North Kashmir to assist the local administration in its efforts, he said. Khandey told Seth that three joint control rooms in South, North and Central Kashmir have been set up and transport facilities arranged for facilitating rapid mobilisation of boats to rescue and evacuate people in case any area gets

In a dramatic twist, Salman Khan's driver takes the blame in the 2002 hit-and-run case Agency : Mumbai In a dramatic twist in the retrial of Bollywood actor Salman Khan's 2002 hitand-run case, his driver Ashok Singh on Monday told a court in Mumbai that it was he who drove the killer vehicle, but the prosecution appeared unconvinced by the confession. The 43-yearold Ashok Singh told the court of Additional Sessions Judge D.W. Deshpande that he was driving the vehicle when the accident took place on September 28, 2002, leaving a pavement dweller dead, public prosecutor Pradeep Gharat told the media here. Gharat pointed out that the only person who appeared to agree with Ashok Singh's

version was Salman. He said the defence had put up the driver to save the Bollywood actor. "I have not seen any complaint or any record about Ashok Singh (being the driver) and no other witnesses have spoken about him," he said. Ashok Singh told the court that he was at the wheel of the Toyota Land Cruiser which was not speeding when its tyre burst, but the car dragged to the left and he lost control over it. As he tried hard to hit the brakes, the vehicle had already climbed the steps of the American Express Bakery, resulting in the death of a sleeping pavement dweller. Shocked by the accident, Salman, who was sitting on the left seat attempted to

open the door, but it was jammed. So he alighted from the right side or the driver's door, Ashok Singh said to questions posed by defence lawyer Shrikant Shivade. Salman is facing re-trial in the case in the Mumbai Sessions Court with several charges, including culpable homicide not amounting to

murder, which stipulates a 10-year jail term. The actor was arrested soon after the accident and the case was tried before a Bandra magistrate's court for rash and negligent driving, the charge attracting a two-year jail sentence. Further arguments in the case will continue on April 1.

flooded. “We are ready and fully geared up to meet any eventuality,” the state chief secretary said. No breach in Jhelum or the flood spill channel has been reported so far and the administration has kept ready sand bags to raise and fortify embankments, Khandey informed Seth. Khandey

said during the last few days, heavy rains coupled with melting snow has led to rapid increase in the discharge of rivers and rivulets. He said that all available pumps have been pressed into service to drain out water from inundated areas. Relief camps have been established at identified locations and

these have been provided with adequate quantity of ration, water, fuel, blankets and other necessary items, he said. Khandey said that stocks of LPG, Petrol, Diesel and Kerosene oil are available for meeting the requirements for next 10 to 15 days. However, 2,000 trucks are held up on the closed National Highway and if it could be opened at the earliest, stock position will automatically improve. On availability of medicines, the Chief Secretary said that adequate supplies are available besides all health institutions have been put on high alert and control rooms established in various hospitals. All CMOs, BMOs and Medical Superintendents have been asked to ensure necessary arangements are put in place in hospitals to fully deal with any eventuality. He said small DG sets have also been hired by the hospitals to provide alternate source of electricity should power supplies snap.

Kejriwal the next Mayawati: Even if AAP survives, it will be a mere regional party Agency : New Delhi A party that owes its existence to the Lokpal movement kicks out its own. A leader, who claims to have entered politics for ‘service’ and not for ‘power’, gets into an ugly power struggle with his co-founders. A chief minister who resigns after a spat with the Congress on a matter of principle, bargains in private for a deal to reclaim the chair. A man who calls himself a ‘chhota aadmi’ with no aukaat, labels his colleagues as kaminey and ‘wo saale.’ A party that sells itself to voters as being different from others turns out to be a party with irreconcilable differences. And we are still asking if Arvind Kejriwal and his AAP will survive this public stripping of the mask! Many people argue Kejriwal will lose nothing because of the

ongoing drama in the party; if he performs in Delhi, AAP will once again become popular and the internal fight will be forgotten. AAP apologists are convinced Indian voters have a short memory and after Paanch Saal Kejriwal, everything will be forgiven. Had Rajiv Gandhi still been around, he would have reminded Kejriwal of an important lesson of Indian democracy: voters forgive everything

except betrayal of their hope. Every time a ‘Mr Clean’ lets them down by turning out to be an imposter, he is inevitably booted out by the disillusioned voters. Monday’s Kejriwal is a vastly different man from the person who once said, if politics is dirty (keechad), we will get into it to clean it. Now, he is a man covered from head to toe in the dirt he once promised to clean.

Bhushan-Yadav exit may not weaken AAP..? "Political language is designed to make lies sound truthful and murder respectable, and to give an appearance of solidity to pure wind,” is what George Orwell said long ago. The voices emerging from the AAP over the last few days, leading up to and after the purge of Prashant Bhushan, Yogendra Yadav, Admiral Ramdas and Anand Kumar, too seem to have made lies sound truthful and murder respectable. However, the critical question is not if Kejriwal and his acolytes were handing out lies as truth, but if the cleansing will harm AAP or will AAP be better off without the expelled leaders, particularly the highly respected Yadav-Bhushan duo? The truth, although yet to be proved, is that the AAP will feel much lighter and relieved because with the duo's expulsion, it has gotten rid of the burden of ideology. The party can now ride free and play its politics without Bhushan taking uncompromising positions on sensitive issues such as Kashmir and nuclear energy, and Yadav, pushing for a truly participative democracy within the party. Sceptics and Leftists had always asked this question: what exactly is AAP’s ideology? What’s its position on the country’s socio-economic policies and human development? The AAP had not answered this question directly except making the point that they were against corruption and were pro-people, or more precisely, proaam aadmi. From whatever they stood for, people read ideologies that they found suitable to trust or distrust the party. Some thought they were Left while some felt they were ultra-Left and even anarchist; those who believed in Narendra Modi’s fabled efficiency and promise anticorruption crusade thought he resembled the prime minister; those who saw him through Yadav’s lens thought he was the ultimate democrat, who will lead the country into a new form of democracy and alternative politics. In fact, Kejriwal appeared to be a sum of all these and more and that should have burdened him because he was no longer an activist, but a politician. As President Lyndon Johnson tells Martin Luther King in the film Selma, a politician has 1001 problems compared to an activist’s single problem. Kejriwal knows it. He has to run the Delhi government and has to deliver on the grossly unrealistic poll-promises. There is no place for ideology and activism as he gets his hands really dirty. The politician in him has to kill the activist, while participative democracy can wait. And there is no case for a stated ideology to be propoor and efficient. In practical politics, it’s better to build the ship while sailing it than casting one in stone. Look at the Left – they were all well-meaning people, now they have been drowned by both an outdated ideology and revisionism, and blatant compromise with neo-liberals. In the beginning, Kejriwal may have sounded Left, but surely he doesn’t want to be branded one. Some of his ideas may sound Left, some that of liberal democrats and some that of the BJP because he is now a mainstream politician. It’s also not fair to brand him autocratic for having gotten rid of leaders who were causing inconvenience.

Deepika gives out a powerful women empowerment message Agency : Mumbai Sometime back Deepika Padukone spoke about her depression, this time around she speaks about women empowerment. Deepika collaborated with director Homi Adajania to give out a brilliant and powerful message about the choices that every woman is entitled to. The black-and-white video has the actress calling for change in the "caged" mindset of men about women and asking them to stop judging the fairer sex for their choices of clothes, profession and life. "It is my choice to live life the way I want, to wear clothes I like, to decide how

I want my body to be, when I want to get married or if I ever want to walk down the aisle, to decide if I want to be straight or a lesbian...," Deepika said. The short film features 99 women from across different professions. Other known faces in the video are Farhan Akhtar's

Banished to hard labour in China’s ‘Wild West’ after being framed, Huo An nevertheless exudes sagely pacifism and prevails upon the warring ethnic tribes to stay united.

Agency : Mumbai Amyra Dastur, who will be seen in the upcoming film Mr X, encountered some strange problems while shooting. Since her co-star Emraan Hashmi is shown to be an invisible man, Amyra landed up saying most of her dialogue to him in his absence. Says Amrya, "Every scene was shot twice, once with Emraan, and once without him. Vikram (Bhatt, director) wasn't sure when he would have Emraan vanish! So, the scene where I shot without him was very difficult. Acting is about reacting, so when I had to have an intense conversation without Emraan present in the scene, it was really tough. I was given a point to look at - that was supposed to be Emraan's eyes - and the ADs (assistant directors) would read out his lines. I had to

Pentastic! Clarke makes it five for Australia SPORTS ROUNDUP Australian captain Michael Clarke holds the trophy aloft with his teammates as they celebrate their seven wicket win over New Zealand. Kohli has been sensational in Australia: Dravid Agency : MELBOURNE A lesser team may have fluffed its lines on the big occasion before an adoring home crowd, but it left nothing to chance on Sunday. First, its fast bowlers broke the spine of New Zealand’s batting; then its departing captain and the heir apparent scored a pair of half centuries to ensure victory would be achieved without any hiccough. Steadily, inevitably, and with embarrassing ease, Australia defeated New Zealand by seven wickets at the MCG to be crowned World championagain. It was the nation’s fifth World Cup title, and the fourth from the last five editions. If this final felt uninspiring and lopsided, Australia didn’t seem to care. The majority of the 93,013 at the MCG didn’t. New Zealand’s dreams, in its first World Cup final, were mercilessly shattered but the Australian cricket team does not show mercy.

Chasing a target of 184, Clarke’s men crossed the line with nearly 17 overs to spare. The skipper himself was dismissed nine runs from the end, for a 72-ball-74. Clarke walked in at the fall of the second wicket. He began hesitantly, his first boundary not struck until his 19th ball, but soon there returned the usual grace and fluency. Matt Henry

Bhel bags Rs 5,000 cr contract from Telangana power utility Agency : New Delhi State-owned power equipment maker Bhel today said it has bagged over Rs 5,000 crore contract for executing a thermal power project in Telangana. "Telangana State Power Generation Corporation (TSGENCO) has awarded Bhel with an EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) order for setting up a 1,080 MW thermal power plant in the state," Bhel said in a statement. "Valued at over Rs 5,000 crore, the order envisages setting up a thermal plant at Manuguru in Khammam District of Telangana," it said, adding that the project is targeted to be commissioned in 24 months. Bhel’s scope of work in the project includes design, engineering, manufacture, supply, construction, erection, testing and commissioning

of 4x270 MW thermal sets on EPC basis. The key equipment for the contract will be manufactured at Bhel’s Trichy, Hyderabad, Haridwar, Bhopal, Ranipet, Bangalore and Jhansi plants, while the company's Power Sector - Western Region will be responsible for civil works and erection and commissioning of the equipment. TSGENCO has also entered into a preliminary agreement with Bhel for construction of new thermal power plants totaling 6,000 MW in the state. All these power plants are expected to commence generation within the next three years to meet Telangana's increasing demand for power.

India rejects BP's application for selling jet fuel Agency : New Delhi The government has rejected BP's application for selling ATF, saying its expenditure in India so far does not qualify it to get a fuel retailing license, but has allowed it to apply afresh with more details. The Petroleum Ministry, earlier this month, wrote to Europe's second-largest oil company, saying its USD 477 million investment in India till date does not qualify it to begin selling jet fuel to airlines, a senior Oil Ministry official said. A license to retail any of the transport fuels -petrol, diesel or aviation turbine fuel (ATF) -- is contingent upon a company investing or proposing to invest Rs 2,000 crore in oil

and gas exploration and production (E&P), refining, pipelines or terminals within 10 years. The official said BP's $477 million investment since entering in 2011 included both capital and operating expenditure, mostly in its partner Reliance Industries' offshore blocks, including the flagging KG-D6 in Krishna Godavari basin. To qualify for a fuel retailing license, an entity should have made capital investment of Rs 2,000 crore or $500 million, in line with the 2002 fuel retailing guidelines. BP's $7.2 billion spending in buying 30% stake in 21 exploration blocks of RIL is not being considered as capital investment, he said.

was driven through the covers, Daniel Vettori lofted smoothly over the sight-screen, and Tim Southee hit for four consecutive fours. Clarke chopped Henry onto the stumps shortly before the end. The MCG rose as one to applaud him, while a couple of New Zealand players ran up to shake his hands. Steve Smith batted

effortlessly yet again, combining with Clarke to add 112 runs for the third wicket. He remained unbeaten on 56, a fifth fifty in a row for him, scoring the winning runs with a pull to the square-leg boundary off Henry. New Zealand tried, with all its collective heart. Brendon McCullum hared after every ball from mid-off as

if his life depended on it. At 63 for two, with the openers removed, he may have felt New Zealand had a foot in the door, but it was slammed shut pretty quickly. A lot hinged on how well McCullum, who won the toss, fared with the bat. There have been times at this World Cup when he has flown away like a rocket, setting the tone for the rest of the innings. On Sunday, though, he failed to take off. He lasted all of three balls, bowled neck and crop by a cruise missile of a yorker from Mitchell Starc in the opening over. This was a flat pitch but Australia’s bowlers, Mitchell Johnson in particular, were irrepressible. New Zealand ambled to 33 for one in 11 overs, when Clarke introduced Glenn Maxwell. He bowled Martin Guptill with only his second delivery, the batsman out playing inside the line.

Agency : MELBOURNE Dismissing criticism against Virat Kohli for his early dismissal in the World Cup semifinal against Australia, former Indian cricket captain Rahul Dravid said barring the one blip, the star batsman has been sensational Down Under. "We have short memory. He did play his absolute best at the Test matches. In fact, he was sensational," Dravid said on the sidelines of an event here. "I cannot think of an Indian batsman who had come to Australia and played as well as Virat Kohli in the Test matches. We did see his absolute best. Unfortunately we didn't see it the other night (semifinal match). But thats part and parcel of the sports," he added. On India's losing the semifinals against Australia in Sydney, Dravid

said he was not very disappointed by the defeat. Dravid said the two teams which played the finals were the best teams to have reached there. "Realistically, India didn't beat Australia at all during these four months at any Test matches and tri-series and New Zealand did play some fantastic cricket at

home," he elaborated. "I think the two best teams made to finals," Dravid said adding, "India did as well as they could and it was quite difficult to get to the semifinals." "They were a young team and with these kind of conditions, it was going to be difficult to get over the Australian hurdle," he said.

Saina Nehwal, Kidambi Srikanth KKR threaten to pull-out of IPL 8 now eye Malaysia crown over Sunil Narine clearance issue

Agency : Kuala Lumpur Newly-crowned India Open champions, Saina Nehwal and Kidambi Srikanth will look to continue their fairytale run as they eye another podium finish at the USD 500,000 Malaysia Open Super Series Premier which gets underway with the qualifiers here Tuesday. Left with hardly any time to celebrate their maiden title wins at the India Super Series, Saina and Srikanth had to rush for Malaysia last night itself and the duo will look to recover quickly before starting their campaign on Wednesday in the main draw. Set to be

officially crowned the world no. 1 on Thursday, Saina will start her campaign as a third seed against Indonesia's Maria Febe Kusumastuti in the opening round. The girl from Hyderabad is likely to face Thailand's Busanan Ongbumrungpan, ranked 19th, in the second round. If Saina can produce the same magic which helped her clinch India Open then she is likely to find herself face to face with Chinese Taipei's Tai Tzu Ying, seeded seventh, in the quarter-finals. However, the road to the podium will be tougher here as the top Chinese, including Li Xuerui

and Wang Yihan, will be back in business and ready for the new world no. 1. "In last three months, I have reached three finals, which means I am learning. I am not taking any tournament easily. Every tournament is difficult and every one will be prepared for me and I will have to be ready everytime," Saina said. On a roll with back-to-back titles, Srikanth, on the other hand, will face 2010 Commonwealth Games silver-medallist Rajiv Ouseph of England in the first round. The Indian will take heart from the fact that he had beaten Rajiv during the World Championship in August last year and would look to do an encore on Wednesday. A win will pit him against world no. 16 Tian Houwei of China next. "Every win is important to me, every win motivates me, every win gives me the confidence to perform well in the next tournament," Srikanth had said last night.

Sardar charged up to face Australia in hockey meet Agency : New Delhi Indian hockey team captain Sardar Singh on Monday said the team is looking forward to meeting world champions Australia in the 24th Sultan Azlan Shah Cup to be held in Ipoh, Malaysia from April 5 to 12. India had a fruitful 2014 when they won the the Asian Games gold after 16 years. The Sardar-led side also defeated the Netherlands after 18 years in the Champions Trophy and also overcame World No.4 Belgium. They gave a tough

fight to Australia as well to finish a creditable fourth in the tournament. Now, the team is gearing up under new chief coach Paul van Ass to take on Australia, New Zealand, Korea, Malaysia and Canada for the title in Ipoh. "The team is motivated post the Champions Trophy 2014, where we beat the top teams that are ranked higher than us. While we stood fourth in the tournament, there were stronger teams that finished lower in the tournament," Sardar said in

a release. "The upcoming tour will be tough but the boys are confident enough and we are looking forward to meeting Australia in the final." It will be the first assignment for Dutchman van Ass, who takes over the reins of the eight-time Olympic champions from Australian Terry Walsh.

Agency : New Delhi The eighth edition of cashrich Indian Premier League is merely nine days away, but the champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are yet to settle in for their title defence. According to reports, the Kolkata-based franchise has unresolved issues with the organisers of the tournament, the allpowerful Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) regarding one of their star players, Sunil Narine. The reports said that KKR are even considering a pull-out from the 2015 edition over the West Indian spinner's

clearance issue. The 27year-old from Trinadad and Tobago was banned for his suspect action for a second time in two matches during KKR’s 2014 Champions League Twenty20 campaign, wherein they finished runners-up to Chennai Super Kings (CSK). His bowling action was first reported in the semi-final against the Hobart Hurricanes that resulted in him missing out the final against the CSK, which KKR lost by eight wickets. According to BCCI rules, a player who has been reported for suspect action

cannot play in the competitions sanctioned by the Indian board. Subsequent to that, he was not considered for the West Indies' tour of India last November and the offie pulled himself out of the 2015 ICC World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. Meanwhile, Narine underwent a biomechanical test in Loughborough, which was approved by the International Cricket Council (ICC), despite the sport's governing body staying away from conducting the test.

Fire scare in Indian U-23 football team team bus in Dhaka Agency : Dhaka The Indian Under-23 football team here for the AFC Championship Qualifiers survived a fire scare today when smoke spewed out from the rear of the team bus carrying players from a training session. The 30-member Indian contingent, including national senior team coach Stephen Constantine, reacted in panic and immediately vacated the bus. They were left stranded on the streets for some time

and were eventually taken to the team hotel by the police escort vehicles in turns. They were on their way back to the team hotel from a morning recovery session when a burning smell hit everyone inside the bus and emission of smoke was spotted from

construction work started in May 2011 and is expected to be completed by next year. The new terminal will have an area of 18,120 sq metres with the ability to handle 700 passengers (500 domestic and 200 international) per hour. It will have 18 check-in counters, official sources said. Gujarat Finance and Civil Aviation Minister Saurabh Patel had last year requested the Centre for declaring Vadodara and Surat flight terminals as international airports. Patel had also requested Union Civil Aviation Minister for starting

direct flights to Dubai from Vadodara and Surat. Meanwhile, the regular operation of Mumbai and Delhi-bound flights from the airport resumed yesterday after completion of resurfacing work of runway, Dhoke earlier said. As many as 16 flights operate everyday from the Harni airport, located on the city outskirts.

In one of the largest seizures in recent times, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) seized smuggled cigarettes worth Rs 23.29 crore at Adani Hazira Port near Surat city, officials said here Monday. “Total 3.21 crore cigarette sticks of multiple brands, which include Gudang Garam, Djarum Black and Luvin Fresh were seized today. Market value of these cigarettes is Rs 23.29 crore and it is the biggest haul of foreign made cigarettes in India in recent times,” a DRI statement

said. Acting on specific intelligence, DRI officials from the Surat unit detained six containers which were brought from Dubai in two cartons and polyethylene bags, it said. The stock of cigrattes were sent in the garb of waste paper and it was imported by two Bhujbased parties, the statement said. After the contraband was examined, it was revealed that containers were stuffed with cartons of Indonesian made cigarettes with low density polyethylene (LDPE) bags stacked in front, to conceal cigarette cartons, it said. Searches

conducted at godowns in Vapi and premises of importers in Bhuj, revealed that no such importing firms existed at the declared office premises, the statement said. Representatives of importers, suspected to be the masterminds behind the racket have been detained and are being questioned by the DRI, it said. These cigarettes were brought to be sold in Mumbai, Daman and Ahmedabad, it said, adding that the case is being investigated. As per the DRI’s statement, foreign made cigarettes are in high demand in India and the high rate of customs and excise duty on imported cigarettes make smuggling a lucrative option. “In the recent budget, excise duty on cigarettes was hiked by 25 per cent. At present, the high import duty on imported cigarettes makes it a lucrative commodity for smuggling,” it said.
