Agency | Guwahati Four women were killed and eight others, including a minor were injured when a vehicle carrying pilgrims from here met with a road accident at Chapar in Assam’s Dhubri district today. Police said the vehicle overturned as it tried to negotiate a curve on way to Mahamaya temple, considered to be one of the oldest Shakti shrines in the country. Three women were killed on the spot and another died in the hospital, where the injured were rushed, the police said adding the four women were related.

Two-wheeler majors Hero MotoCorp, HMSI, Bajaj Auto and Suzuki Motorcycle are offering discounts of up to Rs 22,000 on BS-III models to liquidate stocks, a day after the Supreme Court banned sale and registration of such vehicles from April 1. With 6.71 lakh two-wheelers, out of over 8 lakh BS-III vehicles impacted by the ban, dealers said the immediate effort is to sell as many units as possible before the deadline by offering “unheard of discounts” in the industry. Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India (HMSI), which had initially offered a flat discount of Rs 10,000 on its BS-III scooters and motorcycles increased it to Rs 22,000 later in the

day. The company said it is offering cash back offer of Rs 22,000 on its BS-III scooters and motorcycles models Activa 3G (priced Rs 50,290), Dream Yuga (Rs 51,741), CB Shine (Rs 55,799 to Rs 61,283) and CD 110DX (Rs 47,202 to Rs 47,494). According to dealers, the company is offering rebate of Rs 12,500 on its scooters, Rs 7,500 on premium bikes

Shiv Sena MP Ravindra Gaikwad assaults Air India employee, BJP MP pays the price His mistake: he shares his surname with another MP from Maharashtra, Ravindra Gaikwad. Agency | New Delhi Sunil Gaikwad, a BJP MP from Latur, on Thursday claimed that he was repeatedly stopped at security check points before boarding a flight. His mistake: he shares his surname with another MP from Maharashtra, Ravindra Gaikwad. “I was stopped at security points at the airport repeatedly because of my surname and as I’m an MP,” Sunil Gaikwad said. The MP also asked whether it was a crime to share a surname. “I have conveyed

this to Minister Jayant Sinha. Is having the Gaikwad surname a crime?” he said. The other Gaikwad, a Shiv Sena MP from Osmanabad, has been in the news for assaulting an Air India employee. This lead to the state-run carrier and six private airlines banning Ravindra Gaikwad from flying on their fleet. The issue was even raised by the Sena MPs in the Parliament, which

prompted Civil Aviation Minister Ashok Gajapathi Raju to back the Air India staff, saying they cannot discriminate between passengers. Sena MP Anandrao Adsul also questioned Air India on why a similar travel ban was not extended to television personality Kapil Sharma, who allegedly misbehaved on a flight after getting drunk. Earlier, Ravindra Gaikwad was forced to travel by train from Delhi to Pune after his booking was cancelled .

The Rajya Sabha can only recommend changes to the Finance Bill and not block the legislation as the Upper House doesn’t have a say in the matters of money bills. Former finance minister P Chidambaram sought for guarantees over the safety of the Aadhaar data, saying that it is vulnerable to hacking attacks and leakages. “The larger question, that is being raised, and I think you should answer is, how will you protect the privacy of transactions in bank accounts? How will you protect the privacy of facts, material in the income tax returns? The Pentagon has been hacked, and five hundred

million accounts have been hacked…what is the guarantee that you have the technology to prevent hacking of bank accounts, hacking of income tax accounts through the Aadhaar number?” he asked. In his reply, Jaitley said that it was wrong to question find fault with the Aadhaar scheme as technology is always vulnerable to attacks. “The Pentagon got hacked even without the Aadhaar being there…the fact that technologies can be broken into, can never be an argument to say don’t have technology.

2 / Dt. 31-03-2017, Friday Editors’ Picks FRIDAY, MARCH 31, 2017 Pollution is not just a Delhi problem and is certainly not limited to outdoors While Delhiites have been exposed to air pollution for many years, it is only recently that people have started taking cognizance of this problem due to heightened awareness, conversations and social debates around the subject. Conversations around air pollution have so far been limited to Delhi-National Capital Region (NCR) owing to the alarming levels of smog that engulfed the city last year. Mumbai resident Sunil Nagpal recalls his experience and shares, “I’m an avid jogger and enjoy running on Marine Drive every morning. In early November last year, I was asked by my organization to travel to Delhi for a fortnight on a project. It was then that I came face-to-face with this problem.” Unaware of this problem then, Sunil continued his morning jogging ritual even in Delhi, but soon realized that it was getting extremely uncomfortable for him to breathe while running. “Initially I did not pay much heed to this problem; however, suspected something wrong when the issues persisted. Even after a month after getting back from Delhi, there were no signs of improvement. A doctor suggested that I could be suffering from the ill-effects of air pollution. It is then that I realized the gravity of the situation”. Sunil was in for an eye-opener in this case as he believed that air pollution was the exclusive property of the capital. His condition set him thinking about air pollution and ways he could fight it. He consulted his friends, family, and browsed the internet extensively for more information. He loved his jogging ritual and found out ways to combat it using options much as pollution masks. He was so happy with his efforts that one evening when he was sitting with this friends, he started explaining his problem and how he reached the solution with some pride. Little did he know he was in for a surprise! It was then that a friend pointed out the problem of indoor pollution. Sunil was taken aback as he had focused on outdoor pollution only till now and didn’t have a hint of how harmful indoor pollution was as well. “After all our homes are clean and we maintain hygiene. How can our homes be polluted?” Instantly the thought of well-being of his wife and young children struck him and he set on a path of research again. “I didn’t want my family to face the problems that I did” said Sunil. Few hours into the research Sunil found exactly what he was looking for. “I stumbled upon honeywellsmarthomes.com and discovered how bad a problem indoor pollution was. The PM2.5 level in our homes are at times worse than the situation outside as we grapple with problems of dust and cooking fumes,” he says, adding he finally decided to get a good indoor air purifier. “I can’t control the air outside, but I sure can make it breathable inside” he said. He found some vital inputs on the site about indoor pollution and the products that could solve this problem for him. He narrowed his choice to the Honeywell Air Touch™ air purifier for his home.

H-1B Visa Curbs On Indians Will Also Hurt US: Sushma Swaraj Agency | New Delhi

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on Thursday said if the US puts restrictions on H-1B visas, immigration or business outsourcing, it will not just hurt Indians but will be bad for the US too. “We are not just talking with the US authorities (on H-1B visas and related issues), we are talking with logic and concrete statistics,” Swaraj told the Rajya Sabha during the Question Hour. “This is a mutually beneficial partnership, and we have told them (the US) that if you snap these ties, it will not hurt us alone, it will also hurt you,” she said. She said that the Indian information technology (IT) companies operating in the US are generating jobs there and contributing to the US exchequer. “We have told them that it is not true that Indians are stealing their jobs. On the contrary, Indian companies in US are generating employment for the Americans. So far, Indian companies have given direct employment to 1.56 lakh Americans and supportive jobs to 4.11 lakh,” she said. She added that between 2011 and 2015, the Indian companies have made an investment of $2 billion, paid taxes worth $20 billion and Indian workers have contributed $7 billion to the social security scheme.

Renowned Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan has once again come out in defence of Indian skipper Virat Kohli. This was after former middle-order Australian batsman, Brad Hodge, who is also the Gujarat Lions coach in IPL suggested that Kohli might have opted to sit out of the deciding test in Dharamsala to get himself ready for the upcoming IPL season. Stating his unwavering support for Kohli, Bachchan wrote a message on Twitter where he said, “Virat skipped 4th to play IPL .. From Ravindra Jadeja to Umesh Yadav: Positives that Team India can be proud of Agency | Ranchi

While Australia came prepared the 2016-17 Border-Gavaskar Trophy series, India arrived late. After beating England and New Zealand with minimum fuss, the result in Pune came as a rude shock and a timely reminder that every Test match has to be won and every opposition has to be respected. It also taught all of us in the media that Test cricket isn’t so much about what happened in the past (Australia couldn’t draw a Test in Sri Lanka and India didn’t lose a single Test in over a year) but only about what happens on the day. After winning the first day of the second Test, Australia needed to win just one more day to seal the fate of the series, and that’s why India arrived in the series. The way India bowled on the second day of the Bangalore Test revealed the true character of this young team. It’s not that they bowled Australia inside 50 overs and secured the first innings lead, but their desperation for the cause ensured that Australia didn’t run away with the game. It

was the turning point of the series from India’s perspective. After conceding a slender first innings lead, once again, India dug deep with Pujara and Rahane to keep the game alive. Pujara went on to score a double hundred in Ranchi but his innings

of 92 in Bangalore was not just his best innings of the series but also, one of the best Test innings of his Test career.

Winning the first game 21-17 against Arundhati Pantawane might give it a deceptive veneer of a close game but Olympic silver medallist PV Sindhu, whose name on a draw makes the fans reach out for block bookings, decided running away with the match was a better idea than giving credence to the proverb ‘making a mountain out of a molehill’. With due respect to Pantawane, the second game was a brutal lesson in watching a champion raise the bar, eventually winning the match 21-17, 21-6. Australia captain Steve Smith said on Thursday that he is not sure if Virat Kohli was hinting at him in his tweet but for him, the series is well and truly over and the Indians had outplayed the Aussies. Smith is all but set to lead Rising Pune Supergiant in the 10th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) starting on April 5. The 27-year-old said that Kohli is the best person to answer whether he falls in that bracket of people the Indian captain doesn’t want to be friends with. Kohli had tweeted earlier on Thursday, “My answer at the post-match conference has been blown way out of proportion. I did not categorically say the whole Australian team but only a couple of individuals. I continue to be in good terms with the few guys I know & who

I’ve played with at RCB & that doesn’t change.” Responding to questions about this, Smith said, “I don’t know if I am one of those couple of players Virat was hinting at in his tweet today. That is for Virat to answer. “For me the series is done and dusted and India have outplayed us. I am now ready to lead a new bunch of team at the Pune Supergiant,” he told the media in the backdrop of a Supergiant promotional event in New Delhi.

Kohli’s clarification earlier in the day had come after he had been at the receiving end of widespread criticism from the Australian media on what they dubbed as ‘classless’ comments. Comparing Kohli’s leadership style with that Ajinkya Rahane, who was the standin captain for India in the final Test in Dharamsala, Smith said, “Rahane was cool and collected on the field while Virat was very aggressive and emotional.”
