In the last 27 months, since the time Narendra Modi became Prime Minister and moved to Delhi, Tuesday’s was his third visit to Gujarat and first when he attended a public function and addressed a rally. It was an occasion, which the people of Saurashtra region in Gujarat had waited for long — fulfillment of an ambitious promise that he had made in September 2012 as chief minister to bring excess Narmada water from Sardar Sarovar dam by laying a long web of pipeline to solve water woes of this parched region. This was indeed a momentous occasion, both for Modi and the agricultural commu-

nity who would benefit from it. But precisely for these reasons — conceive grand ideas and execute them — why Modi was able to sell his Gujarat development model to the people of the country and become the Prime Minister thereafter. Gujarat needed a reassurance from Modi that he was still there for the state. The event gains addition-

al importance because of the fact it was coincidentally held in the region where Patel community is dominant. The Prime Minister addressed the rally in his mother tongue Gujarati that could be taken as a clear indication that the poll bugle for the impending state Assembly election has been effectively sounded early. Are family systems more important than women’s rights?

www.sunvillasamachar.com

QUOTE OF THE DAY

“Today, several officers transferred by LG directly. Files not even shown to CM or any minister. Is this Modi model of democracy?” - Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal once again took to Twitter to complain about tacit interference by Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung in the affairs of the AAP government.

In a country where violence against women has been a routine affair, fortunately public sentiment is increasingly turning, albeit slowly, against such heinous acts. But the Centre’s thought process is out of sync with that of many citizens. The Centre on Monday told the Delhi High Court that if marital rape is brought under law, “the entire family system will be under great stress” and defended the penal code provision that protects husbands from being tried for the rape of their wives. How long will the Centre wait for ‘society’s attitude’ to change before criminalising marital rape. Quoting from the Justice JS Verma committee report, the Centre defended its stance by saying that “even when marital rape is recognised as a crime, there is a risk that judges might regard it as less serious than other forms of rape”. The panel had examined the criminal law in the aftermath of the 2012 December 16 gang rape and recommended several changes in existing laws. But it’s not just the Centre that is not keen to go ahead with criminalising marital rape. In March, a parliamentary standing committee on home affairs steered clear of declaring marital rape a crime. In May, Union minister for women and child development Maneka Gandhi said that laws against marital rape are not being used by women in 99.9% of cases, and most women tend to use the law only after the marriage is over. Later the minister said in a reply to a question in Parliament: “It is considered that the concept of marital rape, as understood internationally, cannot be suitably applied in the Indian context due to various factors.” The government’s words fly in the face of United Nations recommendations, and undermine India’s attempts to project itself as a progressive global leader. Should our social reforms lag behind our excellence in digital technologies and scientific achievements? Malaysia and Turkey, steeped in patriarchal cultures, are ahead of India in this curve. India’s Constitution is a modern one that promises equality and social justice, and laws must lead social reform rather than be victims of the status quo that the government and parliamentary panel seem to favour. When women experience coercion and violence within relationships, it violates their fundamental right to live in safety, security and with dignity. An intimate relationship, particularly marriage, should be a space of mutual trust and respect. Along with laws, however, it is also important to work towards the empowerment of women, politically, socially and economically, and also start engaging with boys and girls in addressing gender stereotypes and redefining notions of masculinity.

Baar Baar Dekho starring Sidharth Malhotra and Katrina Kaif has been granted a ‘UA’ certificate by Censor Board Of Film Certification (CBFC). However, this didn’t happen without any hassle. According to a report in Bollywood Hungama, CBFC asked the makers to remove a visual showing bra from the film. The board also asked to delete a reference to ‘Savita Bhabhi’, a pornographic cartoon character. This left the makers entirely flabbergasted. “Are we living in the Victorian era when women’s innerwear was never spoken of in public? Years ago in 1995 there was a bra shot featuring Kajol and Shah Rukh Khan. And Baar Baar Dekho is directed by a woman. So the chances of lingerie being used to titillate the audience are nil,” a member of the

(H.S.) | New Delhi

Baar Baar Dekho team was quoted in the same report. This is not the first time when CBFC interfered in a creative process by indulging in moral policing. From Black Friday to Udta Punjab, films have been a continuous target of board’s desperate attempt to somehow improvise itself as the watchdog of morals of Indian society. Recently Anurag Kashyap was involved in a controversy over the release of his film, Udta Punjab. While the CBFC wanted to cut a large number of scenes in the film, claiming obscenity and defamation.

Anurag had approached the court, which ruled in his favour. The film was finally passed with one cut. Filmmakers have to repeatedly explain the difference between the term ‘censorship’ and ‘certification’ to CBFC. In the age of the internet, when the idea of watching movies and shows is increasingly becoming a private activity, CBFC should really re-think its decisions and it must stop being ‘sansakari’, trying to save Indian culture. Meanwhile, makers of Baar Baar Dekho should be happy about the film getting a UA certification.

He says he is still getting a great amount of work even though he didn’t turn out to be a superstar. “I still get work. It has been 20 years (for me in the industry) and I am still

a need for actors like me. I am happy to be busy to work and explore.“Maybe I didn’t become a huge star, but still I am happy. I just wanted to work and I am happy that I am getting work,” he added. Arbaaz strongly believes in every actor having a reality check about himself. “It’s very important to have a reality check… Your self-esteem goes down because other people feel that you are not good enough. You have to constantly be telling yourself, ‘You are good enough. You will get beaten up by people but if you react to that, I don’t think you are in the right profession,” he said. Arbaaz is now busy promoting his film Freaky Ali. The film features Nawazuddin Siddiqui in lead.

Ae Dil Hai Mushkil teaser landed on Tuesday morning and the Karan Johar directorial was met by positive response. The 80-second teaser showcases Ranbir Kapoor, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Anushka Sharma dealing with love in all its glory and pain. The film also stars Fawad Khan in an important role but we caught but a glimpse of the Pakistani actor in the teaser. The film marks Karan Johar’s return to direction after a break of almost four years and looks like an intense romantic drama. The teaser was set to a song composed by Pritam and sung by Arijit Singh. The soulful lyrics go: “Tu safar mera hai tu

hi meri manzil tere bina guzara ae dil hai mushkil, Tu mera khuda tu hi dua mein shaamil, tere bina guzara ae dil hai mushkil… Mujhe aazmaati hai teri kami, meri har kami ko hai tu laazmi.” The film, earlier said to be a love triangle, also celebrates unrequited love. Ranbir’s character is intense as he meets Anushka and Aishwarya along the way. The film also stars Lisa Hay-

don and Deepti Naval. As soon as the teaser landed, Bollywood responded with love, and more love. Alia Bhatt, who has been promoting the teaser for some time now, wrote, “And here’s comes my favourite song of all time!!!! film. Not many actresses in Bollywood have tried their hand at martial arts and doing stunts in their films, as compared to actresses in Hollywood. However, Sonakshi has managed to break that perception with Akira. Sonakshi said, “First of all I would like to take that as a compliment. To get compared with Hollywood is a big thing for me. I am happy that I have got noticed for my hard work. I went through a lot of physical training for this film as doing action, applying punches and kicking high is not an easy thing. You have to be

fit and only then can you do such things. Also, actresses don’t get a chance to showcase their abilities and action in Bollywood. In Hollywood, they give actresses opportunities to do action and other stuff. I hope with Akira, actresses in Bollywood would start getting action roles and perform stunts.” Apart from doing high-octane action sequences in the film, understanding her character’s emotional feelings and situation was the most challenging for the Dabangg actress. “Getting into the mindset of the character was challenging for me. The pain, the situation she has been through and to portray that was not easy for me since I have never been in such a situation and I have never faced such an environment. And then, learning martial arts and doing stunts in the movie also took a lot out of me,” she said.

Agency | Brussels The European Union on Tuesday said US tech giant Apple must repay a record 13 billion euros ($14.5 billion) in back taxes after ruling that a series of Irish sweetheart tax deals were illegal. “The European Commission has concluded that Ireland granted undue tax benefits of up to 13 billion euros to Apple. This is illegal under EU state aid rules because it allowed Apple to pay substantially less tax than other businesses. Ireland must now recover the illegal aid,” a Commission statement said. EU Competition Commissioner Margrethe Vestager said Apple’s “selective treatment” in Ireland meant it paid an effective tax rate of just one percent on its European profits in 2003, which then fell to a bare 0.005 percent by 2014. “The tax treatment in Ireland enabled Apple to avoid taxation on almost all profits generated by sales of Apple products in the entire EU single market.” Brussels launched an inquiry into Apple’s tax arrangements in Ireland in 2014, one of a series of anti-trust cases targeting major US corporations that have angered Washington.

These were not the only reasons for his excitement. Agency | New York Researchers have found that cholera toxin activates a key molecule more strongly in people with the O blood type, putting them at increased risk of getting more severely ill from the disease than people of other blood types. Cholera toxin hyperactivates a key signaling molecule in intestinal cells of people with the most common blood type and high levels of that signaling molecule lead to excretion of electrolytes and water — in other words, diarrohea, the researchers found. Cholera is marked by severe diarrohea that can lead to dehydration, shock and even death. “We have shown that blood type influences how strongly cholera toxin activates intestinal cells, leading to diarrohea,” said the study’s senior author James Fleckenstein, Associate Professor at Washington University School of Medicine in St Louis.

The change in the technique seemed to have been propagated to counter the fast and fullish incoming deliveries, which have made him a candidate for lbw dismissals in the past. This could also have come about after his sessions in Perth with former Australia opener Justin Langer, whom Gambhir had visited at the end of the 2014-15 Ranji season. Whatever the reason, the

Noida. “I don’t mind batting first. The first session is always going to crucial. Hopefully, we can get a good start. Playing under lights is going to be a completely different experience, and I am sure the guys here are going to relish it,” captain Gambhir had said after losing the toss and being asked to take first strike.

Bulandshahr teen forced to abort by mother of ‘rapist’

Correspondent | New Delhi

Five Months pregnant after she was allegedly raped on multiple occasions between February and April this year, a teen from a village in Uttar Pradesh’s Bulandshahr district was forced to undergo abortion by the family of the accused on Monday. The abortion was carried out by a quack in the village, which comes under Kotwali Dehat police station of Bulandshahr. According to police, a few locals took the semi-unconscious victim to the police station, with the

foetus in a polythene bag. Based on her complaint, the police registered cases against the quacks and the accused. The accused, one Mohammad Yunus, is from the same village — Bhaipura — and works in Gujarat. The police did not give further details, only saying he had come home on leave earlier this year, when he allegedly sexually assaulted the teen. No arrests had been made until late Monday evening. The victim, who is 14, comes from an extremely poor family, and her father had died a couple of years ago, an officer

said. Circle Officer (City), Bulandshahr, Dharmendra Kumar Yadav said the victim recently told her mother about the series of sexual assaults after her mother found out she was pregnant. The woman went to Yunus’s house in the village and confronted his mother — the latter reportedly warned her to remain quiet for the sake of family “honour”. Yunus’s mother gave the teen’s mother Rs 1,000 to have her aborted, Yadav said. Coming from an extremely poor family, the victim’s mother did not approach the police at the time, it is learnt. Yadav said the girl was taken first to a local quack, who gave her some medicines for the abortion but since it did not work Yunus’s mother took her to a second quack — a woman — who performed the abortion Monday.

vira shows that Harappans were not only aware of the potential threats from tsunamis, but they were also pioneers in coastal disaster management. “Most importantly, results of this study opens that possibly Dholavira, at least in part, could have been destroyed by such a tsunami,” NIO Director Dr SWA Naqvi said yesterday. He was sharing findings of the detailed study conducted by scientists of the Goabased institute. The team

of scientists, led by Rajiv Nigam, had embarked on the study on the port town at a time when the real purpose of the Dholavira wall has been a topic of considerable debate. The study has proposed that the thick wall was built to protect the town from extreme oceanic events such as storm surges and tsunamis, Naqvi said. “This well-planned urban settlement flourished for about 1500 years from about 5000 to 3450 years before present archaeological excavations show that the township comprised three parts — castle, the middle town and the lower town,” he said. A unique feature of Dholavira is the presence of a 14-18 meters thick wall, apparently built as a protective measure.

ter has pinned the blame on the Narendra Modi government at the Centre for interference in Delhi’s affairs through the office of the Lieutenant Governor. The BJP has declined the allegations and accused the AAP government of relentlessly indulging in a war of words with the Centre. Earlier this week, Kejriwal alleged the PM was working in tandem with power discoms to benefit them. He also said the L-G’s office cancelled his government’s order to make discoms pay compensation for unscheduled power cuts. But

the L-G’s office called the statement ‘incorrect and misleading.’ The tussle between Kejriwal and Jung has continued even after the Delhi High Court ruled that the Capital continues to be a Union Territory under the administrative control of the L-G. The order was a major setback to the AAP government which has been pursuing demands for statehood of Delhi ever since its ascension to power. The High Court also termed the decisions of the AAP government to probe irregularities in DDCA and CNG fitness scam as ‘illegal.’
