A total of 19,478 road accidents occurred in 2021 due to loss of control by the driver due to inappropriate speed, distraction, or misjudging a curve, which claimed 9,150 lives and injured 19,077 people, according to a report released by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH). The report titled ‘Road accidents in India -- 2021’, said the nature of accident or collision types at aggregate national-level data shows an increase in 2021 compared to 2020. The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) on Thursday sought to blame Rahul Gandhi for the alleged breach of his security during the Bharat Jodo Yatra in Delhi, claiming the MP had himself violated security protocol. A senior officer of the paramilitary force, which reports to the Union home ministry, told. that Rahul — a Z-plus protectee of the CRPF — was a habitual violator of security guidelines and had done so after the Yatra arrived in Delhi on Saturday. The officer, who declined to be identified, did
not specify which protocols Rahul had violated on Saturday or how. But he claimed that Rahul had breached security guidelines more than a hundred times since 2020 despite the violations being taken up with him on several occasions. Four persons have tested positive for coronavirus after samples of 1,926 of the 97,805 passengers who arrived in Mumbai, Pune and Nagpur international airports were examined since December 24, a Maharashtra health department official said on Friday. This includes an international flyer from Pune who was detected with the infection in a test conducted at the airport there during the day, he added. The four positive cases detected at these airports comprise two from Pune, one from Navi Mumbai, and one patient from neighbouring Goa, he said. Samples of all four have
been sent for genome sequencing to find out the variant that has caused the coronavirus infection, he said. The screening of a percentage of travellers arriving at international airports in the state started on December 24 as a precautionary measure against the surge in cases in countries like China, South Korea, Brazil, and the United States of America.

Nepal’s new Communist govt will wear China tilt on sleeves at its own peril Politics in Nepal, the former Himalayan Kingdom, is as unpredictable as the mountain weather and never short of surprises. Although, the fractured mandate of the 2022 general election held in November – and the change of mind of leaders switching alliances is surely a surprise. It was a contest between former prime ministers of Nepal. Sher Bahadur Deuba’s Nepali Congress (NC) emerged as the single-largest party with 89 seats. K.P. Sharma Oli’s United Marxist Leninist (UML) managed 78 seats. Pushpa Kamal Dahal aka Prachanda’s Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist Centre got 32 seats. Nepal’s Lower House has 275 members – 165 directly elected and 110 nominated by the parties on a proportional basis depending on the number of votes polled by each. Deuba’s NC and Prachanda’s CPNMC were part of a five-party coalition that got 136 seats, two short of a majority to form the government. But talks between Deuba and Prachanda broke down on accusations by the latter that the former went back on the pre-poll agreement of sharing the prime minister’s post. Politicians probably take the least time in burying hatchets. Once considered political adversaries, Prachanda and K.P. Oli quickly compromised on their differences and agreed for the former Maoist renegade to be the prime minister for the first half of the five-year term. It will not be surprising if Prachanda and Deuba decide to bury their hatchets to deny K.P. Oli the prime ministership in the second half. Interestingly enough, Prachanda’s coalition consists of 24 members of the Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP), which strongly advocates for the restoration of the “Hindu Monarchy” and “Hindu Kingdom” status of Nepal, two promises it made in its manifesto. The Kamal Thapa-led RPP, the fourth largest party in parliament, was part of the pro-monarchy and anti-conversion rallies in 2020. In the plea before the Madurai bench, more than 30 people who drank water contaminated with human waste in the Pudukkottai area demanded compensation. It has been alleged
that human waste has been mixed in the overhead tank near the area where the Arunthathiyar community lives. The bench has been informed that the lower caste people cannot access the shrine because of the two-tumbler system followed by the village. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Friday accused the BJP of reneging on its MCD poll promise of in-situ rehabilitation of slum dwellers in the national capital. At a press conference, AAP MLA Atishi said just before the MCD polls on December 4, the prime minister had inaugurated 3,024 flats at Kalkaji and handed over the keys to eligible beneficiaries at Bhoomiheen camp. She said the BJP had told around 40,000 inhabitants of Navjeevan camp and
Jawahar camp, located opposite the Bhoomiheen camp, that they too will be given flats at their location. “It’s not been a month and the DDA has pasted notices at the Navjeevan and Jawahar camps, informing the people living there that they will be shifted to Narela and that the JJ clusters will be razed,” Atishi said citing the notice. She said the Arvind Kejriwal government will not let the BJP bulldoze the JJ clusters till the time these people get their houses. No immediate reaction was available form the BJP. The DDA is undertaking in-situ slum rehabilitation of 376 JJ clusters in line with PM Narendra Modi’s vision to provide housing for all. The growth rate in the production of eight core sectors jumped to 5.4 per cent in November against 3.2 per cent in the corresponding month last year, according to the official data released on Friday. In October 2022, the core sectors’ output growth had stood at 0.9 per cent. The production growth of eight infrastructure sectors — coal, crude oil, natural gas, refinery products, fertiliser, steel, cement and electricity — stood at 8.0 per cent during April-October this fiscal, compared to 13.9 per cent a year ago. “Final growth rate of the Index of Eight Core Industries

Agency News : New Delhi As the sowing of rabi crops almost comes to a close, the total area under wheat has gone up by 3.59 per cent to 325.10 lakh hectare (ha) from over the year-ago period, according to the agriculture ministry data released on Friday. Sowing of wheat, the main rabi (winter) crop, had begun from October onwards. Maize, jowar, gram and mustard are other major rabi crops. Harvesting of these crops will begin in March/ April next year. According to the latest data, farmers have sown wheat in more area in 325.10 lakh ha till December 30 of the current rabi season of the 2022-23 crop
year (July-June) against 313.81 lakh ha during the same period last year.A senior agriculture ministry official said the sowing of rabi crops is almost complete by now. Less than one per cent area under wheat might come from Uttar Pradesh, where sowing in some parts will be undertaken in January after cane harvesting.

Following India’s recent announcement of mandatory negative RT-PCR tests for travellers from six countries, including Singapore, the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) would like to highlight that there is no change to Singapore’s current COVID-19 protocol. Fully-vaccinated travellers from India will continue to be able to enter Singapore with no quarantine and testing requirements under the Vaccinated Travel Framework (VTF) that came into effect on April 1, 2022. The reassurance from STB comes after the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India announced on December 29, 2022 that it would require negative RT-PCR test reports from all travellers entering India from China, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, Singapore and Thailand from January 1, 2023.
