Nepal’s new Communist govt will wear China tilt on sleeves at its own peril Politics in Nepal, the former Himalayan Kingdom, is as unpredictable as the mountain weather and never short of surprises. Although, the fractured mandate of the 2022 general election held in November – and the change of mind of leaders switching alliances is surely a surprise. It was a contest between former prime ministers of Nepal. Sher Bahadur Deuba’s Nepali Congress (NC) emerged as the single-largest party with 89 seats. K.P. Sharma Oli’s United Marxist Leninist (UML) managed 78 seats. Pushpa Kamal Dahal aka Prachanda’s Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist Centre got 32 seats. Nepal’s Lower House has 275 members – 165 directly elected and 110 nominated by the parties on a proportional basis depending on the number of votes polled by each. Deuba’s NC and Prachanda’s CPNMC were part of a five-party coalition that got 136 seats, two short of a majority to form the government. But talks between Deuba and Prachanda broke down on accusations by the latter that the former went back on the pre-poll agreement of sharing the prime minister’s post. Politicians probably take the least time in burying hatchets. Once considered political adversaries, Prachanda and K.P. Oli quickly compromised on their differences and agreed for the former Maoist renegade to be the prime minister for the first half of the five-year term. It will not be surprising if Prachanda and Deuba decide to bury their hatchets to deny K.P. Oli the prime ministership in the second half. Interestingly enough, Prachanda’s coalition consists of 24 members of the Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP), which strongly advocates for the restoration of the “Hindu Monarchy” and “Hindu Kingdom” status of Nepal, two promises it made in its manifesto. The Kamal Thapa-led RPP, the fourth largest party in parliament, was part of the pro-monarchy and anti-conversion rallies in 2020. A home ministry directive to all 77 districts asked for - Kapilkumar M. Hirpara suppressing these rallies.

MVA’s Collapse, Its Aftermath Kept Political Pot Boiling in Maharashtra in 2022 Agency News: Mumbai The Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) experiment imploded in 2022 putting a question mark on the political future of Uddhav Thackeray even as the massive split in the Shiv Sena and its aftermath kept the political pot boiling in Maharashtra throughout the year. Maharashtra, which was governed by the Congress till 1977-78 and later in the early 90s, has been following coalition politics centred around ‘aghadis’ and ‘yuti’. The upheaval in the Sena resulting in the collapse of the MVA government was the second such instance in the state’s political history. As a minister in 1978, Sharad Pawar had led a rebellion and toppled the Vasantdada Patil government to become the chief minister at the age of 38. The era of coalition politics took an unprecedented turn this year when Eknath Shinde walked out with 39 rebel legislators of the Shiv Sena and claimed to be the original Sena. Never before has the political situation in the state, which has 288 MLAs and 48 Lok Sabha MPs, been so complex. The dust is expected to settle after the elections in civic and local bodies, including

Agency News: New Delhi The stage at the inauguration of the new Vande Bharat Express at Howrah station, West Bengal, witnessed high drama as Mamata Banerjee refused to go up on the dais after sloganeering by a section of BJP supporters in the crowd on Friday. The West Bengal Chief Minister was visibly annoyed over slogans of ‘Jai Shree Ram’ raised by some in the crowd after she arrived for the inauguration of the Vande Bharat express to New Jalpaiguri. BJP minister Subhas Sarkar and Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw were present at the ceremony and asked the supporters to stop the loud sloganeering. However, attempts to placate the TMC chief by Vaishnaw and Governor C V Ananda Bose were not fruitful and she chose to seat herself in the audience instead of the stage. Banerjee later also chose to give her address from her seat in the

audience and did not take the dais. In her speech, she condoled the death of Prime Minister Modi’s mother and thanked him for giving people of West Bengal this opportunity. “Respected PM, today it’s a sad day and great loss to you. I pray to god, may god give you strength. I convey my gratitude to you that you were supposed to come to West Bengal but because of demise of your mother you couldn’t come but joined virtually,” she said. “On behalf of the people of West Bengal, I thank you so much for giving us this opportunity. It’s a sad day for you. Your mother is also our mother. May god give you the strength to continue your work, please take some rest.”

Quote from Mr. Sunil Duggal, Group CEO Vedanta Limited Sunvilla News: Ahmedabad

During the year gone by, the natural resources and mining sector witnessed a robust growth supported by uptick in the commodities cycle and rising energy transition-related demand. India became the fifth largest economy of the world, surpassing UK, with one of the best performing equity markets and is aspiring to be the ‘Electronics Hub’ of the world where minerals will play a crucial role. This year has been marked by geopolitical crisis, supply chain disruptions, concerns over rising inflation, all while the global economy is still recovering from the aftermath from Covid-19 pandemic. The Russia-Ukraine conflict seems to have derailed the global recovery and has reshaped the global energy.

ICICIdirect, India’s leading wealthtech platform serving over 8.5 million customers by facilitating their investments, insurance and loan needs, today released the commodity outlook report for 2023. Due to the IMF’s revised global GDP prediction, reducing inflation, the halt in interest rate hikes, the weakening dollar, and China’s reopening, the global commodities market is anticipated to exhibit a mixed trend in 2023 and the global economy is currently experiencing a slowdown. This is likely to have a mixed effect on the commodities market,” ICICIdirect report said, adding that the aforementioned variables are predicted to benefit the gold and silver markets,

with gold possibly emerging as a safe haven asset and silver possibly luring purchases from the industrial sector. ICICIdirect launched commodity trading in 2020 and within a short span, it accounts for 5.47% retail market share. Commodity traders and investors are provided with regular research-backed recommendation. As per ICICIdirect, despite the Russia-Ukraine war, the crude oil market has suffered greatly in 2022 since production and demand were nearly balanced. With China reopening in 2023 and OPEC cutting back on oil production, global oil consumption is projected to rise once more. As COVID-19 limits are loosened, mobility will likely grow, which would in turn boost China’s imports of crude oil. On this background.
