‘Cong must change radically’: Rahul says will fight, not lead Rahul Gandhi went public with his farewell letter after party colleagues refused to accept the resignation he offered at the May 25 meeting of the Congress Working Committee. AG. GNS New Delhi: Rahul Gandhi brought finality to his decision to step down as Congress president on Wednesday when he tweeted a fourpage farewell note listing the reasons why he resigned. He asked the CWC to appoint a new chief, but the decision-making body rejected the offer and passed a resolution authorising him to revamp the organisation. Since then, Gandhi has had limited interactions with

party colleagues and in all his meetings remained adamant on stepping down. Even the party’s five chief ministers -- Amarinder Singh (Punjab), Ashok Gehlot (Rajasthan), Kamal Nath (Madhya Pradesh), Bhupesh Baghel (Chhattisgarh) and V Narayanasamy (Puducherry) -- failed to persuade Gandhi to reconsider his decision during their nearly twohourlong meeting with him on Monday. Several Congress

functionaries too submitted their resignations to put pressure on him to change his mind, but to no availAs questions about his status continued, Gandhi finally turned to the social media to get his farewell message out.“It is an honour for me to serve the Congress Party, whose values and ideals have served as the lifeblood of our beautiful nation. Civic body gears up to Central ail-way: Fewer strengthen Mumbai bridges trains, more trouble

A year later, the audit of major bridges was carried out; the foremost suggestion made to the Western Railway was to keep monitoring the health of five major bridges in Mumbai. AG. GNS_Mumbai: It's been a year since Gokhale bridge in Andheri had collapsed. At 7.33 am, on July 3, 2018, the lives of five families changed irrevocably after the collapse. This, however, put the engineers from the railways, BMC and other government agencies into an overdrive as 445 bridges across Mumbai were to undergo inspection for which IIT Bombay was roped in. A year later, the audit of major bridges was carried out; the foremost suggestion made to the Western Railway

was to keep monitoring the health of five major bridges in Mumbai. These are the road over bridges (ROB) of Frere bridge

in Charni Road, Bellasis bridge in Mumbai Central, Mahalaxmi, Carol bridge in Prabhadevi and Tilak bridge in Dadar. "The audit had

suggested instrumentation and health monitoring of these five ROBs. We have engaged IIT Bombay for the said work which will start shortly. These bridges will be eventually rebuilt by the BMC," said a senior WR official. By instrumentation, the engineers will measure the strength of the bridge, which will help them in gauging its health, and gradually necessary measures can be taken. The five mentioned bridges were built during the British era and need attention.

AG. GNS_Mumbai : After a day of mayhem and staying indoors, Mumbaiites stepped out for work on Wednesday, only to be greeted with more chaos, as the central railway (CR) ran fewer trains, following its Sunday schedule, instead of the regular one on account of the weather bureau’s forecast of heavy rain. There was no end to commuters’ woes on Wednesday. At Thane railway station, there were fewer trains and more hassled commuters. The main line of CR operates 856 trains on week days, compared to 646 on Sunday or a public holiday. Operated at an interval of 40-45 minutes, trains were overcrowded, with stampede-like situation on platforms and foot overbridges at several stations. Nazeem Ibrahim Sheikh, 36, who was travelling on the footboard of an overcrowded train, fell off between Mumbra and Kalwa. “She suffered injuries to her back and leg, with scratches on her head. Her condition is stable now,”

said Nasir Sheikh, her brother. At Thane, two women passengers complained of uneasiness in overcrowded compartments. They were discharged after primary medical treatment. An incident of stone pelting was also reported near Ghatkopar railway station, which left one commuter injured. “The victim suffered minor injuries and was rushed to the hospital. He left without registering a case.

Gandhi departs but uncertainty in the Congress persists Rahul Gandhi formally announced his resignation publicly as the president of the Congress on Wednesday. In a farewell note, posted on Twitter, Mr Gandhi said that he is stepping down, taking responsibility for the party’s loss in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. He had, soon after the polls, told the Congress Working Committee of his intent to resign. But the CWC passed a resolution urging him to stay on. Other Congress leaders have tried hard to persuade him to change his mind, but Mr Gandhi has stayed firm. Opting out of party presidency is Mr Gandhi’s call. But what is disturbing in the note is a reluctance to introspect, candidly, about the reasons for the electoral loss. He seems to suggest that victory of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is a result of (only) misuse of institutions and tremendous financial resources. This newspaper has been critical of the Election Commission’s conduct during the polls. But it is hard to deny that the election outcome reflected the deep faith a large section of the electorate had in Narendra Modi; the success of his welfare schemes and narrative of nationalism; the inability of the opposition to mount a counter narrative that resonated with citizens and its organisational hollowness and outmoded categories of politics. These are the areas the Congress will have to work on if it wants to mount a challenge. A wrong diagnosis will not lead to the correct prescription. Mr Gandhi can have his assessment of what he sees as the dangers of the BJP’s rule - but then should he not have led from the front? It is also not clear what Mr Gandhi’s role will be in the future party set up. He makes it clear that he will continue to fight for his idea of India as a soldier of the Congress. But given his pre-eminent status - even without a formal office - will it not result in the emergence of multiple power centres in the party? The resignation may have ended one phase in Congress’ turbulent politics, but the next phase may well be more challenging.

World Cup 2019:  England dominate New Zealand in last league match, seal semi berth

New Dehli : England beat New Zealand by 119 runs in their World Cup match at the Riverside Ground in Chester-le-Street on Wednesday to seal their spot in the last four of the points table. New Zealand can also be almost assured of a place in the semifinals, despite their defeat, since

they have a superior run rate over Pakistan. For the record, England had never beaten New Zealand in a World Cup game since 1983. Hosts England won the toss and elected to bat first. As they have shown us throughout this World Cup, they were commanding from the getgo in the first innings. Jonny

Argentina’s Copa America campaign shows there’s no easy fix for their woes

Bairstow became the first Englishman to score backto-back hundreds in a World Cup before New Zealand pulled things back to limit the hosts to 305 for eight. Jason Roy (60 off 61) and Bairstow were in punishing mood for the second game in succession, sharing an entertaining 123-run stand.

With England cruising at 194 for one in the 31st over, it seemed the home team would bat New Zealand out of the game.

Argentina: Losing 2-0 to Brazil in the semi-final of Copa América in front of the 52,000 at Mineirão Stadium in Belo Horizonte, Argentina prolonged their 26-year-long wait for a major international trophy. After dragging themselves through the mud during the group stages and “playing for their lives” to defeat Venezuela in the quarterfinals, Lionel Messi and his teammates were left to face a jarring truth — Argentina are a shadow of their image, crushed by expectations born from nostalgia. Even though manager Lionel Scaloni believed that “by merit, the team that should have advanced to the final was Argentina”, most would disagree. Barring the “crazy” refereeing decisions that denied Argentina two penalties, which caused Messi to accuse the official of being on Brazil’s side, the Albicelestes were always second to the Seleção throughout the match.

Portugal international Felix made his first-team debut for Benfica last season, helping the Lisbon side win the Portuguese league title with 15 goals and seven assists in 21 starts. He also became the youngest player to score a Europa League hat-trick in a 4-2 win over Eintracht Frankfurt.

Manchester : Indian w o m e n ’s T 2 0 t e a m captain Harmanpreet Kaur Wednesday signed up for Lancashire Thunders for her second consecutive season with the club in Kia Super League. Harmanpreet became the club’s first overseas signing of the year, with two more additions set to be announced ahead of the start of the Kia Super League

England have sealed their spot in the last four of the points table with this win. New Zealand can also be almost assured of a place in the semifinals, despite their defeat, since they have a much superior run rate over fifth-placed Pakistan.

SPORTS ROUNDUP

Wimbledon 2019: Simona Halep, Victoria Azarenka set up battle of former world number ones London: In recent years, Wimbledon has not exactly been dreamland for Simona Halep and Victoria Azarenka, and the nightmare will continue for one of them after the former world number ones set up a third round showdown. Seventh seed Halep appeared to be heading for an easy win when she was a set and 2-0 up against Mihaela Buzarnescu before her fellow Romanian stormed back to take the second set. Buzarnescu even stopped in her tracks midway through the seventh game of the second set to hand over a

bottle of water to a spectator who had fainted in the stands. But Halep was less charitable

and turfed her compatriot out of the championships with a 6-3 4-6 6-2 defeat.

2019. “I am delighted to sign with Lancashire Thunder

once again for the Kia Super League. I really enjoyed my

first spell in Lancashire, everybody made me feel very welcome and I have some great friends in the dressing room, who I can’t wait to play with again,” Harmanpreet said. “It is a very talented squad and I know we will all be hungry to go one further this year, following the disappointment of narrowly missing out on Finals Day in 2018.

The decision was taken at the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi here.

All too familiar pain for Bangladesh

New Delhi: The Union cabinet on Wednesday approved increases in federally fixed minimum support prices (MSPs) of 16 kharif or summersown crops, setting these at a minimum of 1.5 times the cost of production so that farmers can hope to get 50% returns on their output. The increases come as good news for farmers in the backdrop of a delayed monsoon and a potential shortfall in farm output in a country where half of the population depends

New Delhi: The one team Bangladesh is obsessed about beating, more than any other, is India. It can be gauged from the overthe-top, sometimes even premature, celebrations that their players and fans indulge in on the rare occasions that they get one across their much bigger neighbours. Mushfiqur R a h i m ’s p r e m a t u r e exultation during the 2016 ICC World T20 clash and a few distasteful ads after

Mustafizur Rahman helped Bangladesh win an ODI series on home soil are cases in point. India hadn’t lost to Bangladesh in ODIs since 2015 though, which could explain why the perennially upbeat Tigers were much more muted going into the crucial clash. There is a general feeling among the Bangladeshi cricket fraternity that despite their recent improvement, they have been found wanting against India. According to

Al-Amin writing in Daily Star, Tuesday’s match “was another painful defeat for the Tigers against a team that they are seemingly obsessed with beating, but a team that somehow manages to make them always press the selfdestruct button. India are certainly a better side… But Bangladesh have developed a disturbing tendency of buckling under pressure whenever they have faced the mighty Indians over the past four years.”

Mumbai: The Union cabinet on Wednesday approved increases in federally fixed minimum support prices (MSPs) of 16 kharif or summer-sown crops, setting these at a minimum of

1.5 times the cost of production so that farmers can hope to get 50% returns on their output. The increases come as good news for farmers in the backdrop of a delayed monsoon and a

potential shortfall in farm output in a country where half of the population depends directly or indirectly on agriculture for a livelihood. For good farm output, the rains need to evenly distributed

across regions. Robust summer rains, which account for 70% of India’s total annual rainfall, spurs rural spending on most items and as well as increases demand in other sectors of the economy.

Flyover inaugurated by Shah overshadows Gandhi statue at popular protest site Last year, after construction of the flyover began, several Gandhian institutions wrote to the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation, seeking a shift of the life-like statue of Gandhi mid-walk bearing his walking stick. AHMEDABAD:The flyover that Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated on Wednesday has a story around it. A statue of Mahatma Gandhi, the spot of a popular venue for demonstrations, is now overshadowed by the flyover. Despite a lot of deliberation over shifting of the statue since last year, bureaucratic processes have delayed the move. Last year, after construction of the flyover began, several Gandhian institutions wrote to the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation, seeking a shift of the life-like statue of

Gandhi mid-walk bearing his walking stick. Standing tall at Income Tax (I-T) Circle, it was sought to be shifted to Vadaj Circle. AMC agreed. “The responsibility has been handed over to the Gujarat Vidyapith and the process (of shifting the statue) shall be completely undertaken by them,” AMC Deputy Municipal Commissioner S Prajapati, who handles bridge projects, said. Sabarmati Ashram director Atul Pandya, said, “It was the Ashram’s idea initially to shift the statue, and we gathered support from other Gandhian institutions

and wrote to the AMC.” The statue, has been often associated with major social and political movements,

including the Navnirman Movement that led to the downfall of the incumbent Congress government in the

state. It seemed fitting to shift the iconic statue to Dandi chowk, which is metres away from the Sabarmati Ashram where Gandhi began his salt satyagraha, the Dandi march. Gandhi had proceeded towards Dandi from his Ashram, on this route. “The AMC’s role is limited to providing the land. The rest – design, development, shifting and installation – was to be undertaken by us,” Pandya said. “As this year is Gandhi’s 1 5 0 t h b i r t h c e n t e n a r y, the government granted money too.” Subsequently, architect Neelkanth Chhaya, coordinator of the

Architectural Documentation work of the Gandhi Heritage Sites Mission, designed the circle that would include a base over which the statue was to be erected. “After running through many, many iterations, the design is complete,” Ela Bhatt, Chancellor of Gujarat Vidyapith, expressed concern that despite the inauguration, the statue remains where it was. Bhatt said, “It has been a positive response from AMC. But it should have been ensured that the statue was shifted before construction of the flyover began.”
