Taiwan: 22 passengers dead after TransAsia plane crash At least 22 people were killed Wednesday when a turboprop passenger plane operated by TransAsia Airways clipped an overpass and plunged into a river in Taiwan, in the airline's second crash in just seven months. Desperate crew shouted "Mayday! Mayday! Engine flameout!" according to a recording thought to be the final message from the cockpit to the control tower played on local television. A "flameout" is when the flame that normally burns in the engine goes out, causing engine failure. Twin-engined planes are usually able to fly on one engine. Aviation officials said they had not released the cockpit recording, suggesting that it may have come from amateurs monitoring the radio. Dramatic amateur video footage showed the TransAsia ATR 72-600 hit an elevated road as it banked side-long towards the water, leaving a trail of debris including a smashed taxi. "I saw a taxi, probably just metres ahead of me, being hit by one wing of the plane. The plane was huge and really close to me. I'm still trembling," one witness told TVBS news channel. Rescue officials said that 15 survivors had been pulled out of the wreckage, but that 22 people were believed dead and 21 were still missing. Many of those on board were Chinese tourists. It was the second serious incident involving a TransAsia Airways plane in a few months after another flight operated by the domestic airline crashed in July during a storm, killing 48 people. 'Racing against time' Wednesday's accident happened just before 11:00 am (0300 GMT), shortly after Flight GE235 left Songshan airport in northern Taipei en route to the island of Kinmen with 58 people on board, including five crew members. Six airline officials including chief executive Peter Chen bowed in apology at a televised press conference. "We would like to convey our apologies to the families (of the victims) and we'd also like to voice huge thanks to rescuers who have been racing against time," said Chen, confirming that 13 people had been killed. Lin Kuan-cheng from the National Fire Agency later said that 13 people were dead and nine showing "no signs of life" -- the term used before death is officially confirmed. Those missing are thought to be trapped inside the submerged front section of the plane. "The focus of our work is to try to use cranes to lift the front part of the wreckage, which is submerged under the water and is where most of the other passengers are feared trapped," a senior rescue official told reporters at the scene. There has been no official comment on the cause of the crash, but the black boxes have been retrieved. Several former pilots told local media that the plane's sideways flip while in the air could have been caused by the failure of one of the engines. As time ticked away for those inside the fuselage, rescue boats surrounded the wreckage which remains in the middle of the river, with 400 soldiers drafted in to help. Emergency crews standing on sections of wreckage tried to pull passengers out of the plane with ropes. Those who were rescued were put in dinghies and taken to the shore.

After his recent Kayal, a love story set in the backdrop of the December 2004 Tsunami, director Prabhu Solomon has signed up Dhanush for his next movie. Don’t miss the irony here: It was censor board member Ashoke Pandit. Ajay Devgn's Shivaay First look: Sunny Leone turns shelved due to budget issues? queen for Ek Paheli Leela

Bollywood actor Ajay Devgn has postponed his home production Shivaay, which would also mark his directorial debut. But according to the latest buzz, the film has been pushed for an indefinite period of time and there are possibilities that it could be shelved. A leading tabloid quoted a source as saying,"Shivaay

is a big budget film and around Rs.8-9 crore have already been spent on extensive research and preproduction. Hence, Ajay is sceptical about starting the project now as he feels that the film might go way over budget." The actor recently came back from Canada without shooting a single scene of the film because the snowfall in the city was not

up to the mark. However, it is also being said that Ajay will begin working on his next untitled project which will be directed by Nashikant Kamat of Lai Bhaari fame. The film is reportedly a remake of a south film. The preproduction stage of the film has kicked off and now Nishikant is finalising the full cast of the film.

Varun Dhawan starrer ‘Badlapur’ gets ‘A’ certificate due to sex and violence scenes

Right after a major corruption controversy, the Censor Board of Film Certification seems to

Hence, Sriram Raghavan decided to go ahead with the ‘Adult’ certification since he wasn’t ready to compromise on the content of the film.

Virat Kohli is already legendary, says Viv Richards

Yuvraj may make it to India's World Cup squad. Here's how

Ahmedabad

SPORTS ROUNDUP ICC WORLD CUP-2015 COUNT-DOWN

World Cup: Why Stuart Binny is the joker in MS Dhoni's Indian pack

Caribbean cricket legend Vivian Richards Tuesday heaped praise on Indian vice captain Virat Kohli, saying he has already become a ODI batting legend. Richards, who was an integral member of the West Indies’ World Cup-winning squad in 1975 and 1979, also listed Kohli in his list of top 10 ODI batsmen. Richards, considered the most fearsome batsman in the 1980s, put Sachin Tendulkar at the summit spot, followed by compatriots Brian Lara,

Chris Gayle, Clive Lloyd, Australians Ricky Ponting, Matthew Hayden, India’s Virender Sehwag, Australia’s Michael Hussey, South Africa’s A.B. de Villiers and current star Virat Kohli. “The last name on my list, but not the least by any means, is young Virat Kohli. There might be some surprise regarding this pick because he is very young and has a lot of cricket to play still. But in my eyes, he is already legendary,” Richards said. Kohli has scored 6232 runs in 150

matches, helping himself to 21 hundreds. “At such a young age he has twice the number of ODI century than in Tests and he is such a confident player in limited-overs. It is not to say he isn’t so in the longer format, but I really like his aggressive style in ODI cricket,” Richards said of the Indian who has recorded 30 fifties and his average is at 51.50. Talking about the 26-yearold’s rise in world cricket, Richards hoped the Indian Test captain would get better in the future.

Srikkanth reminisces vignettes of 1983 World Cup

Those World Cup memories from the summer of ’83 will never fade away. Krishnamachari Srikkanth remembers vignettes from the competition like yesterday. Those were the glory days. The script was astonishing. From being no hopers, Kapil’s Devils, after a sensational run, bested the formidable West Indians in the final. All of India celebrated.

“That triumph gave us the belief that we could be the best. That India could conquer the world. It was a very important result for Indian cricket,” said Krishnamachari Srikkanth to The Hindu in Chennai on Wednesday. An attacking opener in his time, Srikkanth had this ability to alter the course of matches in a matter of a few overs. He often provided the Indian innings momentum,

disrupted bowlers’ length, and dented the opposition psychologically with his early onslaught. Srikkanth, now 55, was also among the most successful Indian batsmen of that era in the ODIs with 4091 runs from 146 matches. Travelling back to the World Cup, Srikkanth said, “It was the first match against the West Indies at Old Trafford that instilled confidence in us.” He continued, “The West Indies was a phenomenal side then. It had great batsmen in Vivian Richards, Gordon Greenidge and Clive Lloyd, some very good players in Desmond Haynes and Jeffery Dujon and four menacing fast bowlers. And we stunned them in the first game. It gave a tremendous fillip to our campaign.”

Gautam Gambhir, Yuvraj Singh unhappy with World Cup snub Key players in India’s 2011 cricket World Cup triumph, batsmen Yuvraj Singh and Gautam Gambhir on Monday e x p r e s s e d disappointment at being overlooked for the upcoming ICC World Cup 2015. The Indian selectors preferred young talents over experienced pros such as Yuvraj, Harbhajan Singh, Virender Sehwag, Zaheer Khan and Gambhir. “It was disappointing at not being picked for the World Cup. It’s a decision which you can’t help,” Yuvraj said at a cricket conclave.

The left-handed batting all-rounder said that his main focus now was to score as many runs as possible for his state side Punjab in the domestic tournaments. “At the moment, I am focusing on the Ranji Trophy and putting in my best efforts to make a come back.”

Opener Gambhir expressed said he still has the hunger to score runs and succeed at cricket’s highest level. “I play cricket to score runs and win matches. I am still passionate about winning matches for India, my state team Delhi or any Twenty 20 franchise,” Gambhir said. “I am disappointed at not being part of the team for this World Cup. We are the defending champions and it is a proud feeling. I definitely would have wanted to be part of this tournament.”

Although Yuvraj Singh was not selected for the Indian cricket squad which is in Australia for the ICC World Cup 2015, chances are that he may still be included in the team. However, much of it depends on the fitness of other players who have made it to the Indian squad already. Number of players including Ravindra Jadeja,

Rohit Sharma, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Ishant Sharma will be undergoing fitness test soon the fitness of the batsmen will decide the faith of Yuvi. Undoubtedly, the cricket board is not very happy with the performance of the team members who have faced defeat after defeat so far. However, there are several ifs and buts.

Mumbai FC set for a turnaround MUMBAI Mumbai FC may not have started in the best possible manner but they have not lost hope of a good finish in the I-League this season as they launched their sponsor - Playwin - for the season prior to their opening home match at the refurbished Cooperage on Sunday. Three losses in the opening three games may have set them back but Climax Lawrence thinks the team is set for a turnaround in the next few games. "We have been playing well, the structure is good but some ill luck and bad results are not

helping our cause," says Climax, for long the fulcrum of Indian team midfield. The former Dempo player, who has spent many a season under the tutelage of the great Armando Colaco, compares his current coach Khalid Jamil to the current East Bengal manager. "Jamil and Colaco are similar in a way. They both don't scream at the players if any mistake is committed. Jamil shows remarkable patience. We have not played very well so far, but we can turn things around," said Climax.

A day before the must-win tri-series game versus England at Perth, the Indian team was joined by national selector Roger Binny. He stood a few yards away, talking to journalists and others known to him, even as his son Stuart bowled in the practice session. Like all things in Indian cricket, the conflict of interest here is apparent.

And so, when the 15-man World Cup squad was announced, this paternal connection was talked up — and there was quite some uproar in the media – mainstream or social. In this din, it skipped attention that Binny junior has now been part of the Indian team’s set-up ever since the road to their title defence began. “Depending on a few

venues, in Perth or in New Zealand, it is important to have a seaming all-rounder in the side. Stuart Binny is exciting, can play aggressive shots and give me 6-8 overs so I use other part-timers less. Irrespective of the debate, the best seaming allrounder of India has been picked,” said skipper MS Dhoni prior to the just concluded tri-series.

Two more medals for Vijay; Ghosal, Chinappa clinch squash gold

Olympic hero Vijay Kumar’s pistol fetched him two more medals while the seasoned squash duo of Saurav Ghosal and Joshana Chinappa clinched the individual gold in contrasting styles on the fourth day of competitions in the 35th National Games here on Wednesday. The Services Sports Control Board, aiming for a hat-trick of overall championship wins, continued to be dominant and have so far accumulated 20 gold, 4 silver and 9 bronze medals to total 33. Haryana rode on a strong wrestling performance to be second with 18 gold, 7 silver and 4 bronze, totalling 29, followed by Maharshtra. Vijay, after emerging on

top in both the team and individual 25m centre fire pistol events on Tuesday, completed a hat-trick of gold when he combined with Gurpreet Singh and Omkar Singh to ensure a numerous finish for SSCB in the 25m standard pistol men’s team competition. However, the London Olympic silver-medallist settled for a bronze in the individual event with a score of 565. The individual gold was clinched by his SSCB teammate Gurpreet Singh (572) with Madhya Pradesh’s Mahendra Singh (568) fetching the silver. Services dominated the 10m rifle event as well with Chain Singh Manhas, who won the 50m rifle prone gold on Tuesday

THE parallels between the Prime Minister’s role and Test captain’s have been highlighted before but have never been more compelling. Crisis? What Crisis? Michael Clarke was wielding a baseball bat at training yesterday and while he may have considered using it on a couple of people who have written stories about his leadership in recent months it was only cricket balls and Greg Chappell that suffered. The former Test captain turned coach

was hit on the chest during the indisposed captain’s training session in Brisbane. Chappell survived the stinging blow and Clarke said the drill helped him to focus more closely on the ball. The man of the moment is in Brisbane and planning to play for an Australia XI against Bangladesh at Allan Border Field today as he works toward the February 21 cut-off date to prove his fitness for the tournament. If he doesn’t there will be a cricketing

version of a spill. The talk of unrest in the Australian camp has not risen to the same levels of hysteria as those surrounding the government or promoted the same dysfunction. Unlike the PM, Clarke has a track record that suggests his captain’s calls are the right ones — and his track record something to be genuinely proud of. If there are tensions between him and Darren Lehmann or others they are not being played out in public.
