Why BJP Is Losing The Plot In Delhi Badmouthing Arvind Kejriwal appears to have boomeranged on the BJP in Delhi. From advertisements making fun of the ‘Bhagora’ to Prime Minister Narendra Modi gratuitously describing him as a ‘Naxalite’ and asking him to retreat to a jungle and BJP spokesmen on TV dismissing the AAP leader as of no consequence do not seem to have gone down well with voters. That is why, with barely a week to go before campaigning comes to an end for the February 7 election, BJP is suddenly perceived to be fighting with its back to the wall. The BJP's bombastic announcements of deploying union ministers to campaign in Delhi, putting finance minister Arun Jaitley to coordinate the exercise at a time when he should have been busy giving finishing touches to the union budget, increasingly come across as desperate moves. Jaitley has never contested an election from Delhi and lost when he contested from Amritsar in the general election. While the Prime Minister may address one or two more public rallies (he has been to one already) his failure to address the seven rallies planned originally is unlikely to send the signal that the party is sanguine about winning the election. It can now be said that the announcement of Kiran Bedi as its chief ministerial candidate on January 19, hailed as a masterstroke of Amit Shah by no less a person than former law minister and AAP mentor Shanti Bhushan, is already being regretted by the party. Bedi herself did not help matters by claiming that she had found the world’s most beautiful face in Narendra Modi and that Kejriwal should join BJP to get an invitation for the Republic Day parade. Bedi’s refusal to engage in a public debate with Kejriwal and her hurried exit from a TV studio were not taken too kindly by BJP supporters. She struck an awkward note on the day she was inducted into the party by declaring that she herself would start working at 9 am sharp and she would expect "my secretaries" to do likewise. She flaunted two files on TV, one marked ‘Governance’ and the other marked ‘Modi’ and claimed that she had been studying both for some time and was therefore more than eligible to be the chief minister. Every passing day embarrassing details about the Magsaysay winner kept tumbling out of the cupboard. Julio Ribeiro, another decorated police officer, wrote in DNA that when he called up Bedi to congratulate her on winning the award, she invited him to join the trust she planned to set up with the award money. He readily agreed but never heard from Bedi, wrote Ribeiro. Indeed he was not even aware that he was actually a trustee because he was never informed or invited to attend any meeting till TV crews landed up at his doorstep for sound bites when Bedi was accused of flying economy class but insisting on Business Class airfare from her hosts. As Bedi lurched from one PR disaster to another, BJP seemed to be losing the plot.

Big B shares euphoria of Abhishek's birth 39 years ago

MUMBAI As Abhishek Bachchan turned 39 today, father and megastar Amitabh Bachchan recalled the 'joyous' moment when the 'Happy New Year' actor was born. Bachchan, 72, who is a proud father of daughter Shweta and son Abhishek with wife Jaya, wrote on his blog how he

celebrated the moment. "The birthday has been brought in and Abhishek is another year older, 39 years... Strange but he was born just the other day... And the euphoria and the champagne opening at the Breach Candy Hospital, the traditional cigar smoked, general joy and celebration...

QUOTE OF THE DAY

"I can't differentiate myself between a producer and an actress. I want to involve with the film to the maximum as it's a content driven film. Being a producer for this film gives me lot of happiness. It's really a blessing. I had lot of fun. When I started shooting the film, I did not concentrate on other things because I have a team of wonderful co-producers," - Actress Anushka Sharma told during the trailer launch of the film, which releases on March 6.

Kashmir resurrects painful This is Abhishek Bachchan's Favourite memories for Katrina Kaif Way to Celebrate His Birthday

For Katrina Kaif, who was in Kashmir shooting for the film Fitoor, the sojourn in The Valley was not exactly a pleasant affair. It was Katrina's first time in Kashmir, and working on Abhishek Kapoor's film there was a sort of homecoming for the actress. A daily quoted a friend of Katrina's as saying, "For

Katrina, Kashmir carried painful memories of her childhood when her father was a part of her family in London. After he left, she never saw him again. Kashmir was always associated in her mind with her father. She had stored it away." When she landed in Kashmir, Katrina had to deal with the deluge of her

painful memories, and she took it all in her stride. The friend of the actress added, "She never wanted to go there. But she isn't the kind of girl who would run away from a situation. We are sure she has by now dealt with the painful memories of her father." The last time Katrina had gotten close to The Valley was when she had to shoot in Ladakh for Jab Tak Hai Jaan. But that time, her shoot schedule didn't require her to visit Kashmir properly as such. This time around, Kaif was spotted shooting for Fitoor with Aditya Roy Kapur in several locations in Kashmir. When a kiss between Aditya and Katrina in Nishat Bagh, Srinagar, was being filmed, that too, had made it to the news.

Abhishek Bachchan turned 39 today and the actor has a particular policy for ringing in all his birthdays. "For me the best way of celebrating is to work. A birthday is a birthday. I like to spend my birthday with my family if I can. But it wouldn't be a happy birthday for me if

I'm not working," said Abhishek. This has been the birthday routine for Abhishek since his debut in film industry. "Every year since I started my career in 1998, I've made sure that I'm shooting. I remember I was shooting with JP Dutta saab on my birthday.

The only year I missed shooting on my birthday was the year when I was in New York promoting Delhi-6. I hope to continue working on all my birthdays," he said. There will be his daughter to sing Happy Birthday this year. "Aaradhya is the centre of our universe. She's a wonderful child. All credit to Aishwarya (wife) for being a terrific mother. Fatherhood has completely changed my outlook to life. Bringing a child into the world changes all your priorities. I am sure every parent would agree," said the doting father. His star parents - Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan remain imnportant to him. "I'm close to both of my parents. But it's a different equation with each. My father is more of a friend. I share a more traditional mother-son relationship with my mother. It's very hard to differentiate between the two, but there's a difference between my relationship with the two," he said.

Gayle opposes proposed ICC crackdown on bat sizes Twenty-four of the 31 people killed in Wednesday’s TransAsia Airways plane crash in Taiwan have so far been identified, officials said. Flight GE235, en route to Kinmen from Taipei with 53 passengers on board, crashed in the Keelung river on Wednesday after its wing clipped a taxi on an elevated freeway 10 minutes after takeoff, Xinhua reported. According to official reports, 31 people have been confirmed killed, 15 injured and 12 others missing. Besides those on the plane, a driver and a passenger in the taxi clipped by the plane before it plunged into the river were also injured. The dead include 16 passengers from China, five Taiwanese passengers and the captain and two co-pilots. Rafts and

helicopters are scouring the crash site, and along the Keelung river as well as its banks. The cockpit and tail of the plane have been hoisted out of the water, while some segments of the fuselage remain submerged. The Taiwan Aviation Safety Council said that it has invited accident investigators from the Chinese mainland to take part in the accident investigation. Investigators from France, manufacturers of the aircraft, and from Canada, the engine manufacturers, have also been invited. TransAsia has also decided to hand out compensation of 200,000 new Taiwan dollars (about $6,356) to each injured victim, including the two in the taxi, and compensation of 1.2 million new Taiwan dollars to the families of each identified fatality.

Vodafone India Revenue Up 17.7% in Q3

New Delhi Riding on high demand for mobile internet services, the Indian arm of British telecom major Vodafone on Thursday reported a 17.7 per cent rise in revenue - the highest growth rate across its markets, racking up over 1.1 billion pounds (Rs 10,340 crore at 1 pound =

94 rupees) during the quarter ended December, 2014. The company had posted revenue of 937 million pounds for the corresponding period a year ago. "We have achieved another quarter of improving revenue trends in most of our major markets. Thiruvananthapuram The netball team of Chandigarh has been disqualified from the ongoing 35th National Games after it allegedly tried to get a participation certificate in the name of a non-participating player. Netball Competition Director Lalit Jiwani lodged a complaint in this regard with the local police here for cheating, criminal breach of trust, forgery and criminal conspiracy against the Netball Association of Chandigarh including the players, coach, manager,

executives and selection committee and other officials concerned. According to National Games Secretariat officials here, after registering 14 members, Chandigarh only brought 13 for a photo session of the teams here yesterday. "When asked about the remaining player, the team officials said he was unwell and hence moved out of the stadium. But, an enquiry carried out by the Netball Federation of India officials found that the said player had not even arrived in Kerala for the

Games. But, somebody else had been found to be signing under his name in the records in these days," a National Games official told PTI. In his complaint to the police, Competition Director alleged that, "the intent of Team Chandigarh was to get a certificate of the National Games issued in favour of a person who had not even participated in the event. It is also possible that the accreditation card of the said player might have been taken purposefully for some other illegal purposes."

KXIP batsman Mandeep moves to RCB Indian Premier league (IPL) side Royal Challengers Bangalore Thursday acquired the services of batsman Mandeep Singh from Kings XI Punjab in the trading window for the 2015 edition of the tournament. "Royal Challengers Bangalore have traded Mandeep Singh from Kings XI Punjab, in what is the sixth trade prior to the start of the 2015 season of the IPL," Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Sanjay Patel said in a statement. Mandeep, 23, has been a consistent cricketer at the domestic and junior levels, and in the IPL, over the years. He won the Emerging Player

West Indies' destructive opening batsman Chris Gayle Thursday expressed disagreement with the International Cricket Council's (ICC) proposed crackdown on bat sizes before the impending World Cup. "A big boy needs a big bat," the West Indies opener was quoted as saying by Sydney Morning Herald. "People keep saying it has become a batsman's game, but bowlers are becoming more skilful too," he added. Former Australian pacer Brett Lee also spoke against the decision of the ICC, supporting the likes of Gayle and Australian opener David Warner who use bats having a 45 mm-

thick edge. At present, there is no limitation on the thickness of the edge of a bat. And using this lacuna to their advantage, some batsmen play with bats having increasingly thick edges. "I think that if players like Gayle and Warner are strong enough to lift a bat that heavy, at that speed, then good for them, it makes the game a hell of a lot more exciting." However, former Australian One-Day International batsman Michael Bevan had the same opinion as ICC chief executive David Richardson who said Wednesday that the balance between batsman and bowler "may have

shifted a bit too much". "Bats have improved at a far greater rate than balls ... there has to be an even balance if it becomes too lopsided and becomes a sixfest then no one wants to watch that either," said Bevan. The emergence of Twenty20 cricket coupled with a the impact of the closer boundary ropes have resulted in numerous batting records being set in recent years. And the impact of closer boundary ropes has not gone unnoticed by the ICC. "Where some batsmen are mishitting balls and it is just carrying over the rope and going for a six instead of being caught at the boundary," said Richardson.

Mumbai take on defending champions Karnataka in Ranji Trophy Award for his performance in the 2012 season. The second trading window before the IPL season closes Friday. There will

Parent HDFC holds 22.47% in the bank, FIIs 33.75%, ADRs/GDRs 16.84% and the rest is held by others, as of the September quarter. SYDNEY It’s not just the Pakistani players who are facing injury problems in the wake of ICC World Cup 2015 but one of the favourites and defending champions India would also have to resolve fitness problems of four of its cricketers before the commencement of the mega event. Key batsman Rohit Sharma is facing hamstring injury while fast bowler Ishant Sharma hurt his knee during the recently concluded ODI tri-series. Pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar injured his ankle and last but not the least all-

rounder Ravindra Jadeja is experiencing shoulder pain yet again. All four players are set to appear for their fitness tests on February 7 before the Indian selectors would decide their fate. The star-studded side has been in deep waters ever since landing in Australia last year. They only lost Test series to the Aussies but could not perform up to the expectations in the One-Day Internationals against the hosts and the visiting English team. The tournament kick starts on February 14 followed by an all important PakistanIndia clash on the very next day.

Mumbai, A battle royal is on the cards when under pressure Mumbai, gunning for an outright victory to seal a quarter final berth, clash with high-flying defending champions Karnataka in a Ranji Trophy Group A match commencing at the Wankhede Stadium tomorrow. While it's a must-win and final league game for 40-time champions Mumbai, who are trailing fourth in the league table with 17 points to their credit behind toppers Karnataka (32 points), no. 2 Tamil Nadu (23) and no. 3 Baroda (18), the visitors are under no such pressure after

having booked their spot in the last eight with a match in hand. These two outfits have fought many a memorable battle in the past for honours and the upcoming one too promises a no-holds barred encounter, especially with rival captains - Aditya Tare and Vinay Kumar - assuring that victory is what their respective outfits would be aiming for. "We have prepared well for this game and we are going to play for a win. The victory over Baroda has given us a lot of confidence, especially as it was achieved without some top players (like Wasim Jaffer and Abhishek Nayar)," said Mumbai

captain and wicket keeper Tare, who took over the mantle from Suryakumar Yadav prior to the away match in Vadodara. "We are treating this game as a prequarter final and will go for a win. We are confident, but are taking it one game at a time. Beating Mumbai is always special and playing at the Wankhede Stadium against them is a great opportunity," said Kumar who is the secondhighest wicket taker for his team with 29 scalps to his credit in this Ranji season. Karnataka's progress this season, after having swept to the title last year, has been spectacular.

Rajkot airport director took a joyride in AAI flight: RTI RAJKOT A Right to Information (RTI) reply has confirmed a major security breach at the Rajkot airport by the airport director who went on a joyride in an aircraft of the Airport Authority of India (AAI) by giving all security rules a go-by in 2013. R R Gupta, then Rajkot airport director, had boarded the cockpit of aircraft VT-FIU King Air that had come from Vadodara for calibration of landing systems on July 9, 2013 and allegedly ordered the pilot to fly to coastal areas around Porbandar.

The aircraft went out of the air traffic control (ATC) radar for around 15 minutes triggering panic among the security agencies. "Gupta boarded AAI flight in aircraft cockpit. He is from civil engineering background and he was not permitted in writing by any competent authority to board the cockpit. During the operation of such a flight, no security personnel were present and informed," AAI said in the RTI reply to an application by a Jam Khambhaliya resident, Anwar Umar Zakhia. Describing his act as

"ridiculous" and "irresponsible", AAI has also noted that Gupta boarded the flight for personal gain without even security check thereby violating Aircraft Act 1934 (22 of 1934). He also did not inform the Central Industrial Security Force for security clearance. Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) had also ordered an inquiry into it. Gupta was later transferred to Ahmedabad where he serves as joint general manager (terminal operations). "The pilot in command was not given written permission from any

competent authorities of AAI to board Gupta in aircraft or aircraft cockpit. He entered inside AAI Aircraft (VT-FIU) without security check, without boarding pass, without any passenger and manifest," the reply said. The fact came to light through footages of CCTV camera when the aircraft landed back after completion of calibration flights. When contacted, Gupta said, "I have gone through the enquiry process by DGCA as well as AAI. I don't have anything to say. I can speak only with the permission from headquarters."
