BJP: Delhi voters have to choose between governance and anarchy

Nifty ends below 8,700-level, drops 51 pts

New Delhi A day before the February 7 polling for Delhi Assembly, the BJP described the battle as a ‘choice between governance and anarchy’ and hit out at the AAP saying it was more comfortable on streets than in the secretariat. With Shahi Imam of Jama Masjid Syed Ahmed Bukhari appealing to Muslims to vote for AAP, the BJP asked those who

Mumbai, Retreating continuously for the sixth straight session, the Nifty failed to hold the key 8,700 level amid selling in key counters, leading the benchmark Nifty to loss 60.65 points to end at 8,661.05. The Index witnessed a lacklustre trading momentum as investors continued to connect with dismal corporate earning results as well as sustained selling by FIIs. Caution also prevailed over uncertainty in Delhi state Assembly polls due tomorrow.

"The incident occurred around 5.15 am when the victim, a first-year student of a private college, was found hanging in the bathroom of the hostel at the educational institute," Madhapur Police Station Inspector K Narsimulu said. oppose such diktats to come out and vote 100%. The party also expressed confidence about getting a majority in the Delhi assembly. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley reiterated that the “dilution and disappearance” of the Congress is the political price they were paying for their deeds in Delhi and the country. Jaitley rejected that Delhi election were referendum on the Narendra Modi

Bihar CM Manjhi heads for big showdown with Nitish, calls rebel MLA meet Patna Heading for a showdown with the Janata Dal( U) leadership, Bihar chief minister Jitan Ram Manjhi on Friday called for a parallel meeting of the legislature party on February 20. Manjhi also described the legislature party meeting called by party president Sharad Yadav on Saturday as "unauthorised". "The right to call legislature party meeting rests with leader of the legislature party (chief minister). The notice of the meeting called on February 7 is not an authorised one," he said in a statement. Manjhi has been resisting attempts by the party leadership to

force him to make way for his predecesssor Nitish Kumar. Earlier he refused to attend the meeting called by Yadav, though according to the JD(U) constitution the party president has the powers to call a legislature meeting. "The CM as well as over 40 legislators will not attend the meeting," said Gyanendra Singh Gyanu, coming out of the residence of Manjhi, who

was busy holding discussions with his supporters and advisors overnight. Many of Manjhi's cabinet colleagues including Brishin Patel, Nitish Mishra, Narendra Singh, and Mahachandra Singh have come out in his support. Both camps burnt the midnight oil assessing legal and political ramifications, even as the state headed to further political instability.

here is a reflection on the country's image. “The BJP has shown what it could do in the country in terms of development and governance. No one talks

of scam now,” he told reporters, adding that the two week long campaign for the Delhi elections had been a satisfying experience. He also accused AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal of indulging in "diversionary tactics" over the allegations of dubious donations to his party. Referring to his party's chief ministerial candidate, he said Kiran Bedi has been in public life for 40

years and knows the skill of administration. Jaitley also dismissed AAP's criticism of BJP over fullpage advertisement put out by the saffron party today in almost all major newspapers, saying it was a legitimate exercise to reach out to voters. "It's a strange party. It does not find anything wrong with accepting black money as donation but questions us for reaching out to people,"

he said. Jaitley said the 49 day rule of Arvind Kejriwal was “nightmarish” and would be remembered for Dharna and threat to disrupt Republic Day parade. “These are all faces of anarchy.... They talk about honesty and then give tickets to land mafia. They allege political conspiracy when their candidate is caught with liquor bottles," Jaitley said.

Economists tell PM to work for high growth, predictable taxes New Delhi Primer Minister Narendra Modi picked the brains of leading economists in the first meeting of the newlyconstituted NITI Ayog, where they asked the government to work towards high growth, predictable tax regime, fiscal prudence and rapid infrastructure development. Setting the tone for the discussion, Modi emphasised on the need for cooperative federalism and added that he favoured healthy competition for development amongst

states. India, he said, must development fast, taking advantage of the current global environment to meet the aspirations of the people. He was apparently referring to the near sixyear low in international oil prices and the slow down in other major economies that can provide opportunities to India. Modi asked for the views of the economists on the state of economy, ways to perk up revenue m o b i l i s a t i o n , e x p e n d i t u r e rationalisation and suggestions to put India back on high growth path. He said an

objective of NITI (National Institution for Transforming India) Aayog was to establish a dynamic institutional

mechanism where "eminent individuals outside the government system" could contribute to policy making.

respectively. The high court verdict came following the appeal by the trio challenging the death sentence awarded to them by the trial court. The high court also instructed Vikas and Vishal to pay a Rs 50 lakh each. Speaking about the high court's verdict, Katara's mother, Neelam told reporters,"Vikas and Vishal will be given 25 years plus five years during where there won't be remission." Although

Neelam expressed happiness over the increased duration of jail for the trio, she was unhappy that the high court turned down the prosecution's plea for capital punishment. "We will petition the Supreme Court, I think in such cases there should be capital punishment. To the extent that the punishment has been enhanced from a simple life sentence I am happy. But I am disappointed that capital punishment was turned down," she said. Vikas, his cousin Vishal Yadav and Sukhdev Pehelwan are already serving life terms for abducting and killing Katara, a business executive and the son of an IAS officer, on the night of 1617 February 2002. They committed the murder because they were opposed the victim's relationship with Bharti, DP Yadav's daughter.

Aam Aadmi Party rejects Shahi Imam Syed Nitish Katara murder: Accused Bukhari's support ahead of Delhi polls Vikas Yadav, two others get life term New Delhi Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Friday rejected offer of support to it by Shahi Imam of Jama Masjid Syed Bukhari, a day before the capital city goes to Assembly polls.Addressing a press conference here, AAP leader Ashutosh said,“AAP wants to make it clear that our party has nothing got to do with Syed Ahmed Bukhari ji.” formed to eradicate communal politics, only Imam Bukhari would know why he made such a statement,” He further said. Another AAP leader Ashish Khetan said, “We not only reject offer made by Bukhariji, but also make it clear, AAP is here to fight against this sort of communal politics.” AAP leader Sanjay Singh also said that the party does not require support of Bukhari as it was

against any type of "caste and communal politics". "AAP doesn't support the ideology of Imam Bukhari. We don't need his support," Singh added. The move comes as a surprise as the Imam in 2014 had asked Muslims to back Congress. AAP reacted shortly after the Imam of India's biggest mosque said if people don't vote for AAP in these

elections, they would commit a big mistake. In his appeal, Bukhari said, "Appeal to all Muslims to support AAP candidates and help in forming a secular government in Delhi." He further said survival of Muslims was dependent on the survival of secularism in India while urging the people to help AAP to form an honest and

secular government in Delhi. With Bukhari's offer to support AAP, it seems that, in the pollbound national capital satraps are anxious to halt PM Modi's victory march. Yesterday, West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee had also joined the growing procession of anti-BJP satraps to back AAP's energetic bid to beat the BJP in the Delhi polls.

New Delhi The Delhi High Court today commuted the death sentences of all three convicted for the 2002 murder of Nitish Katara and while it upheld their conviction, it awarded a prison term of 25 years without remission to the son of Uttar Pradesh politician DP Yadav's son, Vikas. The two other convicts, Vishal Yadav and Sukhdev Pehelwan, were also sentenced to 25 and 20 years in jail

Delhi doesn't vote for parties, the city votes for itself Will Arvind Kejriwal ride the broom to power yet again or will the lotus bloom in the Capital when the votes are counted on February 10? With the assembly election out of the Congress’ hands, this question has captured the imagination of pundits and punters alike. Pollsters with their ears to the ground say the Aam Aadmi Party is ahead by a nose, but concede it’s likely to be a tight finish. Yet, prophesying on the Capital contest can end in ignominy as the ballot cognoscenti discovered about a year ago. While it’s unlikely to be a Mexican standoff, the Bharatiya Janata Party has had to hold off its campaign for a Congress Mukt Bharat, hoping the grand old party that’s been starving for an election win will eat into the AAP’s vote share. That’s because despite its string of electoral victories, the BJP seems to have entered Delhi’s poll dance with two left feet. The party has been struggling to put up a united face in the city and its decision to parachute former police officer Kiran Bedi as the chief ministerial candidate has left many senior leaders and workers disgruntled.

New Delhi Most films tend to have one male and one female lead character, but R Balki says that his next, Shamitabh — which is releasing today (February 6) — has three heroes. “All three actors — Amitabh Bachchan, Dhanush and Akshara Haasan — play powerful roles. The story is about the two men — about how egos can divide their team, and how it takes two of them to come together to achieve things. Akshara’s character comes in like a binding force between these two powerhouses, and keeps them together,” he explains. The film-maker adds that two strong actors were required for the male

roles, and when he sat with Bachchan to brainstorm about the same, they thought of calling Dhanush and asking if he’d be willing to read the script and sit with them to discuss the project. “I was overjoyed to get him. There’s amazing contrast between him and Mr Bachchan, but both are equally powerful. Dhanush is a very special actor, who you can’t take your eyes off. It is very easy to act like Mr Bachchan with his voice, but to bring in your individuality while using his voice effectively is a great task that Dhanush pulled off,” explains Balki. The film was apparently conceived as a birthday gift for Bachchan.

Dial D for Dhoni!

New Delhi MS Dhoni is known for relying on his gut feeling, and apparently he developed a knack for it early. As a school boy he once literally rebelled against his physical education teacher so that he could open the innings in the final of a tournament only to smash an unbeaten 213. An out-of-form

Dhoni famously promoted himself in the batting order in the ICC World Cup 2011 final relying on his gut feeling, and the rest as they say, is history. Dhoni many a-times belies logic and relies on his gut feeling, which baffles many; but he has a knack for getting the calculations right and that is probably why he is one of the world’s best finishers in the game. One such incident in which Dhoni backed his gut feeling is described in Dhoni’s biography, MSD - The Man, The Leader, written by journalist Biswadeep Ghosh, which tracks the journey of a young boy from Ranchi to the dizzying heights of Indian cricket captaincy.

Twitter revenue nearly doubles, user growth misses mark Twitter on Thursday reported its revenue nearly doubled in the final three

months of last year, but user growth fell short of analyst expectations. Twitter shares rallied more than 10 percent in after-market trades, evidently powered by an optimistic outlook painted by executives who expected user growth to ramp and who confirmed an alliance with Internet search titan Google. "We closed out the year with our business advancing at a great pace," said Twitter chief executive Dick Costolo. Revenue hit $479 million in the fourth quarter, up 97 percent from $242.6 million in the same period a year ago. Its quarterly loss shrank to $125 million, as compared with a $511 million loss a year ago. The number of active monthly users of the San Francisco-based oneto-many messaging service monthly grew to 288 million -- just four million more than in the previous quarter. That figure fell short of expectations -- analysts had predicted the figure would climb to 292 million.Twitter said that it lost four million monthly

users due to a glitch in the new iOS 8 mobile operating system rolled out for iPhones, iPads and iPod touch devices.

Will not be easy for India to reach the final-four : Mohammad Azharuddin

New Delhi Having led India to three World Cup victories against Pakistan, former captain Mohammad Azharuddin feels that the defending champions face no serious threat from their arch-rivals in the much-hyped encounter between the two sides in the cricket World Cup. "India-Pakistan is always a big game. We have not lost to Pakistan in the World Cup and that will

play on everyone's minds while going into the match. I believe that India have a good side and if they play well, I don't think that Pakistan will pose such a big threat," Azharuddin told PTI in an interview. Azhar though realises that the battle will not be easy after the Pakistan game on February 15 in Adelaide and India, who have not fared well in Australia so far, will then need to be

more consistent in order to retain the title. "It's not very easy to make their way into the final-four. They will have to play well consistently. I think they need to win more matches so that the confidence levels are high. If they start losing matches, it becomes very difficult to make a comeback," the Hyderabadi stylist said. "They have the side, they have the talent but eventually it boils down to how fit the team is and how well they adapt to different situations during the ODI games," Azhar added. Having lost the Test series against the hosts and not being able to reach the tri-series final, the Indian cricket fortunes are resembling the 1992 Australian summer when Azhar and company failed to make the semi-finals after a dismal performance Down Under. But Azhar opines that once the board agrees to a tour, there should be no excuses.

World Cup 2015 Team Profile: Pakistan remain dangerous as ever

t was 1992 in Australia. After six consecutive defeats in warm-up, Pakistan team and fans had given up most hope for a maiden World Cup win, for which Imran Khan shunned retirement to have another crack. It was up and down in the group stage, but Pakistan made it to the semis where Inzamam turned into a hero and in the final they

pounced on England like a pack of wolves before Imran lifted that crystal trophy in the middle of Melbourne Cricket Ground. The nation and the team will feel nostalgic about that moment 23 years ago and hope a return to the same soil inspires Misbah-ulHaq's boys to follow in the footsteps of class of '92. One thing that stays

with Pakistan, like in the years gone by, since their maiden Cup triumph is the zone of unpredictability that travels with them, and it's almost a given that you don't know which Pakistan team you will face on the day. The runup to their campaign has been less than ideal, with a 2-0 thrashing in New Zealand following the setback of losing Saeed

Ajmal to a bowling ban and Umar Gul to injury. With their premier spinner and fast bowler following proceedings from home, it will be worth a watch how the team lifts itself in a tournament that will see the last of Misbah and Younis Khan in the ODI arena. The two Pakistan stalwarts have already announced their decision to quit, and it's on their strong shoulders that the team's hopes, especially in batting, rest if Pakistan were to do well in testing conditions Down Under. Perhaps Pakistan are the most interesting team to write about and at the same time the most difficult as well, because, as said, their unpredictability makes them a dangerous unit. Still let's attempt a SWOT analysis of their 15 in Australia and New Zealand.

Rohit and Virat's form will be crucial to India's World Cup chances: Zaheer India's premier fast bowler Zaheer Khan feels that Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma's form will be key to India' title defence as they get ready to face arch-rivals Pakistan in the ICC Cricket World Cup in less than a week's time. "Rohit and Virat's form will be crucial to India's World Cup chances. Rohit will opening the innings with Virat coming at either Nos 3 or 4 depending on match situation. Both have the ability to bat through the innings or even play

the role of sheer anchor necessary in such a

tournament," Zaheer told PTI-Bhasha today. Zaheer

didn't give too much importance to the tri-series performance where India lost three out of four matches. "World Cup is a new tournament and I don't think India's performance in tri series will affect them. They have also got a long break after that and if you see the format also, I am sure India will play semi final," Zaheer said. "World Cup is a long tournament and injuries play a crucial role. It's good to have a settled team and gain the

momentum at right time. Australia and New Zealand are also top contenders as they have home advantage on fast pitches. South Africa is also playing well consistently so I think these four teams can reach in last four," he added. He also did not give much importance to hue and cry about Indian pacers' form and fitness. "Injuries are part and parcel of the game but you have to find the right combination. It's not about bowling only.

SPORTS ROUNDUP ICC WORLD CUP-2015 COUNT-DOWN

MS Dhoni biography: When the young man promoted himself to open and scored a double-ton!

New Delhi MS Dhoni is known for relying on his gut feeling, and apparently he developed a knack for it early. As a school boy he once literally rebelled against his physical education teacher so that he could open the innings in the final of a tournament only to smash an unbeaten 213. An out-of-form Dhoni famously promoted himself in the batting order in the ICC World Cup 2011 final relying on his gut feeling, and the rest as they say, is history. Dhoni many a-times belies logic and relies on his gut

feeling, which baffles many; but he has a knack for getting the calculations right and that is probably why he is one of the world’s best finishers in the game. One such incident in which Dhoni backed his gut feeling is described in Dhoni’s biography, MSD — The Man, The Leader, written by journalist Biswadeep Ghosh, which tracks the journey of a young boy from Ranchi to the dizzying heights of Indian cricket captaincy. Dhoni, who was a promising wicketkeeper-batsman at 16 years of age, had built

a reputation of destroying many a bowling attack with his unconventional style of play. But on that memorable day in 1997, when Dhoni was playing the inter-school final for DAV Jawahar Vidya Mandir against Kendriya Vidyalaya from Hinoo, he was hell bent on opening the innings and the teacher, Keshab Ranjan Banerjee, was in no mood to tinker with the batting order. But as fate would have it, Banerjee finally relented and Dhoni went on to share a 378-run opening stand with Shabir Husain (117 not out).

Viswanathan Anand to meet Carlsen in Grenke Classic

BADEN-BADEN Five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand will take on current world title holder Magnus Carlsen of Norway in the fourth round of the Grenke Chess Classic here. In what is expected to keep the chess buffs across the globe glued to their computer screens, the clash of the titans will be their first meeting since the last World Championship match at Sochi in Russia.

Carlsen had won the match 6.5-4.5. With both players desperately needing a victory, the onus will be on Anand to deliver the goods as the Indian ace is playing with white pieces. So far, both Anand and Carlsen have scored an identical 1.5 points from three rounds. Fabiano Caruana of Italy and Arkadij Naiditsch of Germany share the lead on two points after three rounds in this short eight-

player round-robin tournament. With just four rounds to go, Anand, Carlsen, England's Michael Adams and Etienne Bacrot of France are on the heels of the leaders with half a point behind, while Levon Aronian of Armenia and Germany's David Baramidze are at the bottom on one point each. It's been a mixed tournament for Anand so far. After an easy draw with Caruana in the opener, the Indian missed an opportunity to beat Naiditsch in the second and in the last round against Bacrot, the normalcy was restored with another easy draw as black. However, this may not be enough for the 2013 champion here, as at least a couple of victories would be needed to finish at the top from the last four games.

HIL: Punjab Warriors look to keep winning momentum going Mohali Table toppers Jaypee Punjab Warriors will look to maintain their winning momentum when they take on defending champions Delhi Waveriders in the Hero Hockey India League encounter here on Saturday. Punjab

Warriors have four wins from six matches, while

the Waveriders have posted just two victories in five games and are

placed third in the points table. The Punjab outfit seems to be high on confidence, having won their last match against the Waveriders 3-1 in Delhi. It would be an added advantage for them to be playing on in front of their home crowd on Saturday.

AHMEDABAD You must have diligently worked for hours solving the Rubik cube to test your ingenuity, but you will be puzzled to know about a table made out of the popular game. Now, imagine a table fashioned from the traditional brass karhai and telephone wires or stools shaped from steel bowls, pedestal fan and chakla-belan. Thought we are kidding? The innovations have been brought to life by furniture and interior design students of NID, who have given beauty therapy to almost all the scrap that came their way. They have also shown how discarded bathroom

The designs will be on display at an eight-day Scrap Design Innovations exhibition in NID from February 9. The students were guided by Pravinsinh Solanki, faculty, furniture and interior design. CBI laxity in followup action help accused Geologists conduct soil/rock testing AHMEDABAD The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) lost focus in defending the chargesheets it had filed in different fake encounter cases in the last one year. This was obvious as one after another, the accused in different cases were either discharged or released on bail. For instance, in the 2004 Ishrat Jahan fake encounter case, the central probe agency had stopped investigation exactly a year ago after it filed a second chargesheet on February 6, 2014, against three central IB officials, including IPS officer (now retired) Rajinder Kumar. This chargesheet has been lying unnumbered the court for a year. The court has not taken cognizance of this additional chargesheet because the probe agency has not obtained mandatory sanction to prosecute the cops under certain provisions of the Arms

Act. This sanction is to be obtained from the district magistrate but CBI seeks it from the Union home ministry, said advocate Shamshad Pathan who represents Gopinath Pillai, father of one of the four persons killed in the fake encounter. In the Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case, the CBI had earlier roped in special counsels, including senior Supreme Court lawyer KTS Tulsi, to oppose bail petitions of the accused. Of late, however, the probe agency had been represented by its usual panel lawyers in the case. Further, the Investigating Officer of the case was rarely present during the proceedings in court. With the change of government at the Centre, the CBI's investigators and lawyers who were well-versed with the investigation were shunted out of the Sohrabuddin case.
