SRK to recreate Gujarat in Mumbai for Raees Mumbai Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan’s film Raees, based on late 1980s Ahmedabad bootlegger gangster Abdul Latif’s life, will be shot in Mumbai. Director Rahul Dholakia is reportedly recreating Gujarat in Mumbai’s film city as he feels that Ahmedabad has changed a lot since 1980s and it would be more convenient to shoot the action scenes of Raees on a closed set. The film has Pakistani heroine. The film is likely to go on floor soon.

to Sonia Gandhi in which she also referred to the 'snoopgate controversy'. Armed with fodder provided by Jayanthi Natarajan, BJP accused the Congress of practising "crony capitalism" and running UPA government through "remote control", saying its assertions during Lok Sabha poll campaign stand vindicated. The party also sought a relook at environmental clearances made during the previous regime in the wake of the former Environment Minister accusing Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi of interference in clearances for projects. Base year for GDP changed; economy grew at 6.9% in 2013-14

New Delhi The India’s economy grew at a faster 6.9% in 2013-14 than 4.7% calculated earlier according to a new series of gross domestic product (GDP) data announced on Friday, broadening the coverage to computed income across segments

across farm, corporate and unorganised sectors. The new series with a base year of 201112 uses a “gross value added” (GVA) formula to calculate GDP—the broadest measure of the total value of goods and services produced in the country—incorporates granular information even from the level of the small firms as well output and spending on items such as smart phones and LED televisions. GVA, which measures the difference in value

between the final good and the cost of ingredients used in its production, widens the scope of capturing more economic activity than the earlier “factor cost” approach— a sum of the total cost of all factors used to produce a good or service, net of taxes and subsidies. According to the latest method India’s GDP at current market prices (2013-14) is valued at Rs 113.5 lakh crore compared to Rs 104.77 lakh crore in the old data

series—valuing Asia’s third largest economy by more than Rs 8 lakh crore than estimated earlier. Likewise, the annual average income of an Indian (per capita) now stands at Rs 80,338 compared to the earlier estimates of Rs 74,380. A change in base year for computing national accounts pushed up the “real” or inflationadjusted economic growth rate for 2013-14 to 6.9%, while earlier estimate on the basis of old series was 4.7%.

Blast at Shia mosque in Pak kills 50 as sectarian violence grows At least 49 people were killed in a powerful explosion at a crowded Shia mosque in Pakistan during Friday prayers, the latest sectarian attack to hit the South Asian nation. Police said the blast was caused either by a suicide bomber or an explosive device which went off when the mosque was at its fullest on Friday afternoon in the centre of Shikarpur, a city in Pakistan’s southern province of Sindh. Radical Sunni Islamist groups often target mosques frequented by minority Shiites, whom they see as infidels. Earlier this month, six people were killed and 17 wounded by a suicide bomber outside a Shia mosque in the city of Rawalpindi, also after Friday prayers. “We are trying to ascertain the nature of the blast,” said Shikarpur police chief Saqib Ismail Memon. “A bomb disposal squad is examining the scene.” Saeed Ahmed Mangnejo, head of the regional civil administration, told Reuters that the death toll had reached 49. In chaotic scenes that followed the blast, part of the mosque collapsed after the explosion, burying some of the wounded under rubble. Bystanders pulled people from the debris and piled them into cars for the journey to hospital. Locals said there were not enough ambulances and the army later sent additional vehicles to transport people to hospitals. The atmosphere was tense in Shikarpur after the explosion, with shops boarded up and crowds of emotional residents massing outside hospitals. “The entire city is in lockdown and there is tension in the air. There is a heavy police presence and the Rangers are patrolling the city,” said Pariyal Marri, a local resident. Jundullah, a splinter group of Pakistan’s Taliban that last year pledged support for the Islamic State group based in Syria and Iraq, claimed responsibility. “Our target was the Shia mosque … They are our enemies,” said Fahad Marwat, a Jundullah spokesman. He did not elaborate. Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen, a Shia organization, has called for a province-wide strike on Saturday in protest. Sain Rakhio Merani, a regional police official, said the blast was probably caused by a bomb, although Pakistani television quoted some residents as saying they saw a man wearing a suicide vest. The attack came as Pakistan tries to adopt new measures to tackle Islamist extremists following a massacre of 134 children last month at an army-run school in the northwestern city of Peshawar. The government has pledged to crack down on all militant groups, reintroduce the death penalty, set up military courts to speed convictions and widen its military campaign in lawless tribal areas. Yet Pakistan’s religious minorities, among them Ahmadis, Christians and Hindus, say the government is doing little to alleviate their daily struggle against humiliation, discrimination and violence. Shiites make up about a fifth of Pakistan’s mainly Sunni population of around 180 million. More than 800 Shiites have been killed in attacks since the beginning of 2012, according to Human Rights Watch. Karachi, Pakistan's biggest city and economic heart, has wrestled for several years with a bloody wave of criminal, sectarian and political murders.

It was while working with an ad agency, she met Balki and felt she was ready to switch and become an actress. "When Balki sir gave me the synopsis and read the script, I was very sure about it and the fact that I will do it. After the narration ended I realised I was in love with the script. When Balki sir asked for my decision I told him 'you know my Rahasya' was touted as a film based on the infamous Noida double murder of 14-year-old Aarushi Talwar and Hemraj, the Talwars' domestic help. As we know Aarushi's parents, Rajesh and Nupur, who are both doctors, have been convicted in the case. The Talwars had raised objections to 'Rahasya' being thrown open for public viewing. Resilient England trounce India to seal place in Tri-series final bounced back from a shaky start to claim a three-wicket victory over reigning world champions India in what was virtually a semifinal contest of the Mid-Carlton Triseries at Perth. Chasing a paltry target of 201, England batting order collapsed like a pack of cards as they were 66-5 at one point of the game. However, a robust sixth wicket partnership of 125 runs between James Taylor (82) and Jos Buttler (67) steadied the sinking ship to achieve the target with 19 balls to spare. Stuart Binny was the pick of the bowler for India as he captured

Put into bat, Indian batsman had struggled to find a crucial partnership after Ajinkya Rahane (73) and Shikhar Dhawan (38) contributed a first wicket partnership of 83 runs. James Taylor was declared the Man of the Match for his r o c k - s o l i d performance. England will now face Australia in the final at the same venue on Sunday. India knocked out of tri-series after losing to England

PERTH India were today knocked out of the triseries cricket tournament after yet another spineless display as England recovered from a toporder collapse to record a three-wicket victory and secure a place in the final here. In a do-or-die game, India's batsmen let the team down badly as they frittered away a good start to be bundled out for 200 in 48.1 overs, losing as many as nine wickets for 97 runs from a

relatively comfortable 103 for one. England were tottering at 66 for five at one stage but staged a gritty fightback through James Taylor (82) and Jos Buttler (67) as their stand steered the team home with 19 balls to spare at the WACA ground. England will now take on Australia in the final on Sunday. It was yet another disappointing show by the Indians, who have now failed to win a single international match

during their ongoing tour of Australia. The tournament, which served as a dress rehearsal for the upcoming ICC Cricket World Cup, has shown that there are lot of chinks in defending champions' armoury as they lost three out of the four matches while one was abandoned. While it a mixture of variable bounce and poor application which resulted in India's batting downfall, it was Ajinkya Rahane, who some what proved to be a saving grace with a patient knock of 73 as his teammates did not show the stomach for a fight. On the otherhand, it was diminutive Taylor alongwith the flashy wicketkeeper batsman Buttler, who showed a lot of resolve despite losing the top five as their 125run partnership guided Eoin Morgan's team home.

IIM A graduate helps Indians express nationalism AHMEDABAD While working in the US, Peyush Agarwal, a graduate of the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIMA)'s, saw many Americans express their nationalism with `I Love New York' t-shirts. Once back home, Agarwal could not find anything that helped Indians, particularly young Indians, express their love for the country overtly through common merchandise. "I realized that

Americans celebrate their sense of love and pride for their country and believe in expressing the same through their clothes. Back home, when I was looking for a tshirt that said `I Love India', I failed to find anything that created a sense of nationalism and patriotism. That is when I decided to design tshirts that help Indians wear the patriotic colours, something that blurred regional divides and made us take pride in

belonging to one nation," said Agarwal, who returned to India after 14 years in the US. "I missed my country, the food and my family the most and wanted my children to get all the experiences I had during my childhood here. So, I decided to return and pursue the one-year executive programme from IIM-A in 200910. I took up a job but the thought of designing the tshirts never went away. So, last year, I quit my

job and used my savings to start my venture, Tricolor Nation," said Agarwal, who is 42years-old. From a housewife to the elderly and from a student to a businessman, Agarwal wants his designs to appeal to all age-groups. "The whole point of the venture is to make the designs accessible to Indians of all age groups. My largest customer base right now are the young Indians," said Agarwal.

AHMEDABAD 'Hey Ram!' These are believed to be the final words uttered by Mahatma Gandhi before he fell to the bullets pumped into him by Nathuram Godse on January 30, 1948 at Birla House in Delhi. Bapu was walking the last 170 yards to a prayer meeting that, unfortunately, proved to be his last. There is, however, another account of the assassination that differs on Bapu's last words. Manuben Gandhi, one of the most recognizable faces among Bapu's closest assistants, was present beside him at the time. She later noted in her personal diary that the Mahatma's last words

were 'Ram, Ram!' Manuben belonged to Mahuva near Bhavnagar. Manuben writes how Bapu had said, "It is the duty of nurses to carry on their work even if God himself was to be present there. If it is time to give medicine to a patient and you hesitate, the poor patient may die." "Gandhiji had been trying to persuade Sardar to remain present during cabinet meetings and that it was not the appropriate time to leave the cabinet," Manuben wrote in her diary. Later that day, as Bapu and his assistants started walking towards the prayer meeting, an individual dressed in 'military clothing' tried to touch Gandhi's feet.
