The Program The Interactive Media and Game Design (IMGD) program focuses on the design, development, and business of interactive media, with opportunities to create interactive content and entertainment, and the chance to join and participate in media’s largest, fastest growing, industry. Students will learn by doing, creating projects to add to a digital portfolio and working with industry-standard software and design suites. Video games are by nature a multidisciplinary endeavor, requiring the work of programmers, artists, and interaction designers. Students will experience courses in all areas of the video game industry and will specialize in a career track of their choice. The core of the IMGD curriculum includes courses in gamification, machinima, design, and publication. Students choose a concentration in: software development and interaction design, marketing and entrepreneurship, or art and asset production.

SUNY Poly has digital design studios for programming, virtual reality, and 3D asset creation to support all courses in the IMGD major. The studios include PC and Mac operating systems and software to support game design, graphic design, digital photography, video, and animation. Software examples includes Maya, Construct 3, Unreal, Unity, Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Visual Studio, Source Filmmaker, and Final Cut, among many others. SUNY Poly provides a dedicated lab space that maintains the listed software, accessible by IMGD students during school hours.

Concentrations

Software Development and Interaction Design • Prepares students to enter the industry as programmers or engineers. Students will develop the skills necessary for building the underlying systems that control the game, create rules for the game, communicate between servers and clients, and make the experience come to life. • Additional computer science courses are required. Marketing and Entrepreneurship • Prepares students for a career in the business of interactive media. Students may find employment as team leaders, project managers, and public relations specialists. Art and Asset Production • Prepares students for the creative side of IMGD. Students will create concept art, interactive movies, 3D models, textures, landscapes, music, and all other assets used in games.

Career Opportunities Graduates of the IMGD program can look forward to careers in media’s fastest growing industry. Career opportunities include: game designer, systems engineer, project manager, interactive media consultant, user interaction or user experience designer, 3D modeler, and application designer.
