Glenelg is recognized as the oldest European settlement on mainland South Australia. Each year on 28
December, the Proclamation document is read at the site of the Old Gum Tree. It all began on 28 December 1836 when a flotilla of ships had already landed along with the Colonial Secretary Robert Gouger. It is famous for its wide sandy beach, long grassed and shaded picnic areas right on the seaside, rich heritage, charming hotels and bustling shops, sidewalk cafes and plenty of entertainment at venues or on the strip with many talented buskers.

Coastal erosion, also known as receding shore, refers to the loss or displacement of land, or the long-term
removal of sediment and rocks along the coastline due to the action of waves, currents, tides, wind-driven water, waterborne ice, or other impacts of storms. It is one of the major peoblems facing coastal cities all over the world.

ABOUT THE SITE INTRODUCTION
Site: Glenelg Beach Location: Australia, South Australia, Adelaide Postcode : 5045 Glenelg is a beach-side suburb of the South Australian capital of Adelaide. Located on the shore of Holdfast Bay in Gulf St Vincent.
AIM Analysing the causes of Glenelg coastal erosion in both natural and human aspects by summarizing the natural disasters (changes) and surburban development over the years.
AUDIENCE - Local residents/businesses - Tourists - People who interested in coastal Protection and management

DYNAMIC ANALYSIS
December 2002
January 2010
January 2019
As the historical map from 2002 to 2019, Glenelg has not changed much. However, the density of housing has increased over the years. The vegetation distribution remained unchanged. What is more, there are traces of artificial sand replenishment on the beach.
Wind & Wave
Sea Level Rise
Wind and wave are always dynamic. The waves generated in the process of sea water movement are the main driving forces of coastal erosion. In Adelaide, sand naturally moves north from wave and wind activity.
According to data from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), since 1965, the sea level in the coastal areas of South Australia has risen by 1.5-4mm each year. The EPA predicts that by 2100, sea level will rise by about 1 meter

WHAT CAN WE DO ? Glenelg coast is a dynamic environment controlled by numerous physical and biological processes. According to the CloudCompare analysis above, in Glenelg, the distribution of buildings and vegetation is relatively uneven. In order to solve it, we can: - Beach replenishment - Sand Trapping & Bypassing - Seawall Protection - Biological Protection measures - Seagrasses Planting - Shelter Forest Belt - Slowing down the wind speed in order to reduce sand- carrying effect
