Mixed-use, Hotel and Community Mall

ASOKE COMPLEX

Thesis Project Year 5, 2nd Semester, 2017

ABOUT This project is located next to Asoke Petchaburi junction where the different kinds of transportations meet one another such as bus, Saen Saep boat, expressway, Airport rail link, and MRT. The main idea of the project is the connectivity between each transportation, level, and inside -outside space. A mixed-use project of the hotel and the community mall has complexity in terms of user, function, and circulation. The complexity makes building much more interesting and shapes its identity. The court in the middle of the building is the key to connect every function, space, and people together. The underground connection makes people be able to walk directly from MRT station to the court which helps increase the number of people in the community mall. There is a lot of entrances which are Asoke entrance on the west, Petchaburi entrance on the south, and drop-off entrance on the east. The tower faces to Makkasan park which is the biggest green open space in Bangkok. Most of the guestrooms can get this view. The green areas of this project are in front of the building both in Petchaburi entrance and Asoke entrance. This green area also makes the building more friendly to the neighborhoods.

HANOI RESIDENCE

Term Project Year 5, 1st Semester, 2017

ABOUT Department of Architecture, Chulalongkorn University collaborated with Hanoi Architectural University, brought a group of Thai students to visit Hanoi and exchanged architectural knowledge. The design process starts with planning a master plan and divining plots for each student. The ideas of the master plan are green spaces for public and the axis line from Hanoi Museum to the site. The Hanoi Residence is located at the corner of the master plan on the Do Duc Duc street. In developing country, architecture is one of the most important factors to shape the city and also an expression of the city identity. Hanoi has a unique kind of architecture called “tube house”, it is a traditional Vietnamese shophouse with an extremely narrow street front. I found one of them that has an interesting facade. Their floor plates do not place in the same alignment, but they consistent with the tropical climate. Each floor plate makes shade to one below. In addition, this facade can express the identity of the city which are the diversity and complexity.

SECTION A

SECTION B

TYPICAL SECTION

In the Old Quater of Hanoi, there is a plenty of tube houses. You can see the extension on the facade. People in Hanoi have a tiny space for each one, so they try to expand their living space as much as they can. The cantilevered facade make interior space much wider and also produces a shade to one below. So this architectural language was put into the design. In the typical section, there is a zig-zag line on the facade which is a stacking of living units. The stacks arranged in a diagonal line as shown on “Section A“. There a void in between every two living units, so every unit can get a ventilation from two sides and ventilation through the corridor. TUBE HOUSE FACADE, HANOI

Control of future urbanization

Reconcile relationtion between rural and urban area

Connectivity between communities

Disturb less rural and urban area

Integrate Various program of utilization

Do not get interupt natural area

Connect accessibility of communities

Redefine new centre

Keep visual connection with agriculture land

Provide physical connection to agriculture land (porosity)

Integrate agriculture activities

Gradient of continuity

Resilience for expansion (Modularity)

The developement of an urban scale starts by redefining a new center or node for the connectd areas where important programs will be implemented. The project consists of an architecture that integrates housing, farming, and agriculture programs all in one place. The programs will connect all the nodes together to create flows of utilization

Bangkok x Paris Workshop 29 May 2017 - 9 Jun 2017

ABOUT This is a workshop which Chulalongkorn University collaborates with Ecole nationale supérieure d’architecture de Versailles. To work with French students on two projects in Bangkok and Paris with the same topic but different sites. Each project takes two weeks to work. The project in Paris which INDA student does the analysis about the site and the program and other Thai students come to help to finish the design part. The project site selected is located between the towns called ‘Guyancourt’ and ‘Buc’. The two towns seem to be disconnected since the agricultural field in between them has no urban activity. Both towns consist of mostly real estate and collective housing which is only used for living purposes. “The project aims to establish a relationship between the urban and the rural area by reconciling them for better control of the future urbanization, referring to the ‘Conurbation’ concept which is a strategic way of urbanization where towns and suburbs coalesce.”

Bangkok x Paris Workshop 29 May 2017 - 9 Jun 2017

The architecture part of the project is focusing on the design of collective housing. The building aims to reconcile the relationship between agricultural areas and the city which leads to new methods of urbanization. Therefore, the building keeps a visual connection by twisting the angled massing and including levels allowing sight to pass through while staying physically connnected by intergrating an extra green space into the building. The floor plan starts by placing an interior courtyard that provides natural light in the center of the building. The circulation core is placed on the highest part of the residence. The water utilization core is located on the 4 angles of the court. The number of unit per floor decreases due to the raising levels since the building roof is inclined.

200 Bed General Hospital

NAI LERT HOSPITAL

Midterm Project Year 4, 2nd Semester, 2017

ABOUT In the heart of Bangkok’s CBD, Nai Lert Park was a well-known hotel for more than 30 years. The existing building has low density compared with today FAR, so the saleable areas did not fit with the land economic value. The site was taken over by a health business company, aiming to build a hospital. The programs include 200 beds for IPD, OPD, OR, OB, ER and etc. where relationships between each department have to be concerned. The circulations are very complex because patients’ circulation and doctors’ circulation cannot be crossed. The maximum building area according to FAR is a lot larger than the program’s area so the land is divided into many plots. The area of the first plot for the hospital is now appropriate to the FAR itself. Today design direction for hospitals is to create healing environments that are why green areas have become a part of the project. To minimize building footprint and maximize green area seem like a contrast to each other so the best way is to maximize the quality of the green areas, not the quantity. At the podium, the green areas are located along the main corridor and only at the junction with a waiting area so every patient can have a visual connection with the green areas. For the tower, every three floors will have a terrace for patients to relax. Each floor from the three of these can also see and access to the terrace.

High-rise City Hotel

THE SHIFT HOTEL

Term Project Year 4, 1st Semester, 2016

ABOUT There will be a BTS Skytrain (Red Line) at Srinakarin road in the next few years. This area is one of the suburbs which the number of the population and economics is growing up. The center of Bangkok has high population density, so the closest suburb like Srinakarin road is the next station for urban development. This project is a city hotel according to supporting the city in the future. First of all, this project comes with an idea to preserve a land for an extension because it can be built for exactly 66,368 sq.m. according to FAR 4:1. The hotel requires 40,215 sq.m. so there are more than 25,000 sq.m. for the extension. The footprint area of the building is only 2,697.5 sq.m. which means that more than 3000 sq.m., which is left, is enough for the extension’s footprint. The podium of the hotel sets back from the road for a public space and the tower can cantilever above this space. Both podium and tower are crossing to each other by an idea that “People tends to have the best visuality of a building when a perpendicular side of the building is facing them.” So what to do is face the wide side of the building to people. The wide side of the podium faces to people who are close to the building (parallel to the road) because of their view focuses on the low part. And the wide side of the tower faces to the people who far from the building (perpendicular to the road) because they can only see a high part of the building.

Southern Bus Terminal at Vientiane, Laos

SOUTHERN BUS STATION

Midterm Project Year 3, 2nd Semester, 2016

ABOUT Laos government has a project to replace a new Vientiane Southern Bus Station on the existing site because of increasing the number of passengers for ACE. The new station provides 50 public parking, 50 taxi parking and 75 bus parking including 15 domestic departures and 10 international departures. The main ideas of this project are the vehicle circulation line and the structure. The vehicle circulation is separated into 3 lines which are the bus line, private car line and taxi line for preventing to cross one another. Tensegrity was selected to be the column structure because it is one of the structures which isolates a tensile member out of compressive member. For roof structure, space truss, act as vector-active for the same structural behavior of the column. Consequently, the span length could be much wider and also reduce the number of materials. *10 Selected Project in Class *Honorable Mention / Bluescope Design Award

INSEE LEARNING CENTER

Term Project Year 3, 1st Semester, 2015

ABOUT The site is in the Insee Company’s property next to Ming Mongkol Park. Around the area is full of cement factories. This project consists of 2 main functions, learning center and residence. In the learning center, there are different sizes of meeting room for 30, 60 and 200 people. Also, the residence provides 40 double rooms and 4 suite rooms with facilities. Creating the connection of each building and showing Insee’s product is the main idea of this project. The ‘Showcase Wall‘ on the second floor is placed along the court and building. The walls provide a high quality of space, light, and shadow. At the same time, walls act as a walkway shading and product showcase. There are 14 different types of cement product so one wall represents one cement product.

ABOUT This project is a border patrol school for countryside students. It is located on the hill in Chiangrai, 34 kilometers from the town. The project intends to make the border better education. There are several areas such as a learning area, activity area, chicken farm, cultural center and etc. The building was set on the square grid which came from the human scale, and material’s length. The site has a high slope, so it has to be considered to the space between the building different from no slope area. The design of the space between is the main idea of this project. Moreover, the cost efficiency must be considered. Then, the building part like steel tube, roof tile, and wall cement board could be used with less number of the fraction. The roof, it was designed with single way slope. The rain water will drain from one roof to another one beside without passing the ground face and walkway.

Residental Architecture : Experimental Project

THE GUEST HOUSE

Term Project Year 3, 1st Semester, 2015

ABOUT This project focuses on the design process and creates an algorithm without an old paradigm in architecture. We did not start with a form or building shape but we followed a system instead. The system we created follows the conditions on the base of practical spaces, natural light and other criteria for living. The input we are looking for came from analysis of the case study. It was analyzed until one wall partition was left which is deeply in a scale of the Thai house (case study). The order of the walls is reassembled into a new order. This order is a simple system that has rhythms and these rhythms are combined into wall patterns. Then, the patterns which can be a living unit are chosen and the relationship of the wall patterns above and under the floor creates that floor. by Chattarika C. / Kornchanok N. / Puthita P. ABOUT It is a combination of a residence and a commercial building. A 590 sq.m. area consists of 3 zones; a bicycle shop, a cafĂŠ and a living area for the owner and his sister family. The project requires 6 parking lots; 4 for customers and 2 for residents, and a nicely parking area for bicycles. The main entrance is on the second floor which can be entered by a huge ramp beside the building. The idea is about making the structure look more challenging by maximum cantilevers. To support this idea, the weights of materials from the base to the top is arranged from heavy to light; concrete, steel, and wood. Stack effect also appears at the central core which is the main vertical circulation.
