Samburu National Reserve
Pick up from JKIA or your Nairobi hotel and depart for Samburu National Reserve. Travel north passing lush Kenyan highlands with coffee and pineapple plantations to the northern frontier district. Samburu National Reserve lies north of Nairobi, adjoining with Buffalo Springs and Shaba National Reserve. The lifeline of these three sanctuaries, the palm fringed Uaso Nyiro River, attracts vast and varied herds of game, abundant bird life and crocodile infested waters. Samburu National Reserve has an endless pageant of wildlife with frequent nocturnal visits from the leopard family right from your lodge’s main gate. Samburu National Reserve has excellent game spots for reticulate giraffe, the unusual Beisa Oryx with its lovely long straight horns, gleaming black and white coat impala, blue legged Somali ostrich, waterbuck, Grant's gazelles, dik dik, duiker, olive baboons, gerenuks, lions, spotted and striped hyenas. The higher hills at the south end of Samburu National Reserve offers lovely views of the Uaso Nyiro River. Crocodiles at this river hibernate during the dry seasons when the river dies up. They are quite a few luxury lodges, and spacious tented camps. 1300 hrs Check in at the Samburu Serena Lodge in time for a buffet lunch. Situated on the banks of the Uaso Nyiro River, in the center of the Samburu Game Reserve, the Samburu Serena Safari Lodge echoes the robust rhythms of African riverfront life. The lodge was inspired by the architecture of the indigenous Samburu tribe; it blends into its natural environment by making full use of native materials. Thatched cabins built using exotic African woods create an escapist atmosphere. Accommodations are cooled by breezes off the river and overhead punkah fans. All guestrooms have private verandahs with uninterrupted vistas of the languid river and the wildlife it attracts, as well as the countless crocodiles that make the waters their home. Gracious dining and lounge areas are enhanced by Samburu details and murals depicting local nature. The Samburu dancers will entertain you during one of your days here, and it might even be possible to visit one of their villages if you're interested, for a nominal small fee. 1600 hrs This afternoon drive around in search of the BIG FIVE – Lion, Leopard, Buffalo, Elephant and Rhino. 1830 hrs Return to the lodge for dinner and then overnight.
