Holding more water than all the other Great Lakes combined, Lake Superior is one of the world’s greatest natural resources—a reservoir for 10% of the world’s fresh water. The lake’s vast surface area creates its own weather patterns, with seiches nearing tidal proportions. Lake Superior is also the clearest of the Great Lakes—on a calm, clear day visibility extends to a depth of 18 m. Lake Superior’s shoreline is carved out of two billion-year-old rock, the Canadian Shield, upon which forests of cedar, pine, spruce, birch and aspen grow in thin soil. It is a land of canyons and flattopped mountains with 300-m cliffs, and also rare orchids, woodland caribou and peregrine falcons. Ontario’s portion of the Lake Superior watershed covers an area of 83,300 km2—an area about the size of Austria. Fortunately, the land remains primarily undeveloped and well-protected with several provincial parks, a national park, conservation areas and nature reserves. All outdoor adventures are possible here—from skiing, kiteboarding and ice climbing to surfing, paddling, scuba diving, mountain biking and hiking. This map will help you plan your next adventure, but you’ll need some local knowledge to plan a detailed itinerary. Visit the following websites for more detail on the experiences described here:

The wind and waves on Lake Superior range from calm and serene to tumultuous and treacherous. Somewhere in between are sublime conditions for boardsports and sailing that can only be matched by the world’s oceans. The north shore offers great year-round surf locations that are uncrowded and, in some cases, undiscovered. Stand-up paddleboarders, kiteboarders and windsurfers will find no shortage of sandy beaches, like the one at Mission Island Marsh Conservation Area in Thunder Bay or at the mouth of the Michipicoten River in Wawa. For sailing, the north shore is considered to be one of the prime wilderness sailing areas in the world. Outside of Thunder Bay and Sault Ste. Marie, the shoreline is largely undeveloped which means wildlife sightings are more common than seeing other vessels. But with wilderness, comes isolation and it is important for sailors to be well-prepared—the only marinas between Thunder Bay and Sault Ste. Marie are located in Red Rock, Nipigon, Rossport and Wawa.

Pass Lake Bluffs
The tallest cliffs in Ontario, countless bluffs and crags and plentiful ice make for world class rock and ice climbing along Lake Superior’s north shore. Hundreds of rock and ice climbing routes have been mapped and, simply put, the north shore is a climber’s paradise. Most rock climbs are on hard volcanic rock, known as diabase. But there are a few exceptions, such as the sandstone cliffs at Pass Lake on the Sibley Peninsula. When the temperature plummets, frozen waterfalls and seeps are transformed into a playground for ice climbers. The area around Nipigon is world famous for its ice climbing routes, such as those at Orient Bay and in the Kama Hills. In the Algoma Region, the Montreal RiverAgawa Canyon area offers a unique climbing experience—climbers can ride the Algoma Central Railway into the canyon and ask the conductor to stop the train at their chosen mileage. From there, it’s a backcountry camping experience, so climbers must be self-sufficient.

As we paddled along the water path of the Abitibi River, we refl ected on our six days of solitude – the pristine rapids, dazzling Boreal Lights and abundant wildlife surrounding us. THE SUPERIOR ADVENTURE CONTEST
A great campsite can be defined in many ways, depending on who you ask. While some people want to plug into full hookups and enjoy the comforts of home, others prefer to hike or paddle into a secluded area and fend for themselves. The north shore offers a plethora of camping experiences to suit all needs. Municipally-owned campgrounds, such as those in Thunder Bay and Marathon, offer a natural setting on the outskirts of town. Provincial Parks offer a variety of services including comfort stations with showers and laundry facilities, interpretive programs, canoe rentals and sites ranging from electrical hook-ups to backcountry. The Agawa Bay Campground at Lake Superior Provincial Park is on a beautiful sandy beach and has an exceptional visitor’s centre. Pukaskwa National Park has a quiet campground that can be used as a base camp for hiking the iconic Coastal Hiking Trail or paddling into the park’s interior or along its wild shoreline.

The rugged landscape of the north shore was created by fire and shaped by ice. The granite of the Canadian Shield was formed 2.7 billion years ago. When a massive mid-continental rift formed one billion years ago, erupting volcanoes spread molten rock which intruded and covered existing rocks. The lake itself is young, in terms of geology—10,000 years ago ice as thick as 3.2 km covered the area. With challenging topography and thick forest cover, the area is ideal for hiking and mountain biking. Beyond the trails in parks and protected areas, there are well-maintained and marked hiking trails, such as the Nipigon River Recreational Trail, Casque Isles Trail, and Voyageur Hiking Trail. All of these trails will take you to spectacular views—some that inspired the iconic paintings of the Group of Seven. Twisting through the boreal forest are some of the best mountain biking trails in Ontario. Many of the trails are remnants of former railways or grown-in access roads from logging or mining camps—a testament to the history of the north shore’s communities.

Paddle
The extensive network of smaller inland lakes and rivers makes for unlimited paddling experiences around Lake Superior. First Nation people paddled and fished in the Lake Superior basin for centuries. The European missionaries, explorers and fur traders that followed learned from their experiences and adopted their ways. The north shore of Lake Superior is flanked by historically-significant canoe routes—the St. Marys River at Sault Ste. Marie and the Pigeon River near Thunder Bay. Paddle the wild coastlines of Lake Superior Provincial Park, Pukaskwa National Park, and the proposed Lake Superior National Marine Conservation Area. For one-way trips or to explore remote islands, outfitters can arrange shuttle services or water taxis. While Superior offers world-class kayaking, the inland lakes and waterways are home to renowned canoeing destinations, like Quetico and Wabakimi Provincial Parks. Larger rivers, such as the Current near Thunder Bay, Kopka in Greenstone and Agawa in the Algoma Region, offer varying classes of whitewater.

Algoma Highlands
When snow covers the ground for almost half of the year, it only makes sense to strap on a snowboard, pair of skis or snowshoes and enjoy it. The north shore offers networks of groomed cross country ski trails, a variety of packed snowshoe trails and seemingly endless backcountry to explore. For downhill skiing and snowboarding, Thunder Bay, Goulais River and Searchmont are home to the largest downhill ski resorts in the region, and there is also an excellent backcountry ski area in Goulais River. The mountains along the north shore are the highest between the Rockies and the Laurentians. The north shore also boasts world class cross-country skiing in the form of classic and skate trails. With strong Scandinavian heritage, Thunder Bay and Sault Ste. Marie have well-established ski clubs and extensive trail systems that are impeccably groomed and uncrowded. The Algoma Highlands, near Sault Ste. Marie, and the Nor’wester Mountains, near Thunder Bay, offer premium wilderness cross country skiing experiences.
