CESar galindo

LIFE SUSPENDED was the brilliant collection that Cesar Galindo showed during Mercedes Benz Fashion Week. Cesar Galindo stated “this is a collection based on the principle of slowing down to check your reality and pay attention. We move too fast and to best interpret our surroundings you have to simply stop, pose - take in life, notice the details. Life has so much to show us with in all creative communities.” During an interview backstage after his show, he shared with us a little more about his collection. “It’s all about Suspended life…it solidified my path, you know when you’re doing the right thing, everything and messages all come together.”

-20-

When asked about some of his favorite looks from the collection, he stated “I love the bubble skirts and bubble hems.” Those looks included a ponte bubble hem halter, a variegated brocade bubble skirt, and a jersey floating bubble maxi. “I love the layering of my coats,” he said, “I did convertible clothing, like the coats are actually convertibles, you can take the sleeves off, can take the hoodie off, and play with it.” His first look incorporated this look as a cornflower wool convertible hoodie coat over a jersey dress walked down the runway. There was also a brick jersey convertible jumper dress in the collection that was really popped in color, and flowy yet fitted at the same time.

March 2013

We wanted to know what Cesar thought every woman should have in her closet this season. The designer thinks that everyone woman should have “ for Fall 2013, a shift dress, as it’s a very important statement. You can have a fitted dress but you’re gonna have to have that shift, it’s easy, casual, relaxed.” And we saw plenty of shift dresses in this line, ranging from sculptured knit to silk charmeuse cap sleeve. Lastly, we wanted to know what Cesar Galindo has planned next for himself. “Global distribution, global branding…that’s the ultimate goal,” stated the designer. He seems very determined to reach this goal, and with an innovative collection such as this one, this Houston native is well on his way. T e x t : Z o h a M em a r i Photos: Semant Jain, Ph.D.

brandon Sun Brandon Sun showcased his tranquil yet strong Fall/Winter 2013 “Gutai” collection at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week on February 13th. The designs were a brilliant marriage of casual wear and luxury. “My inspiration this season was pretty complex, did a lot of research,” he said in an interview with Semant in effort for us to learn more about his inspiration and collection, “Axel Vervoodt who’s an amazing interior designer…the way he interpreted Wabi Sabi which is a Japanese approach.” This was what led the collection’s color palette, consisting of deep blues and greens, granite, and black. Brandon also mentioned that his fabric choices derived from “the Gutai art movement, particularly Kazuo Shiraga, who painted with his

-22-

feet to capture motion.” His looks incorporated Chantilly lace, intarsia mink, embroidered leather, and velvet. In this collection, we saw a lot of layering, especially using fur stole, coats, and jackets, that projected tousled looks. This was more along Brandon’s thought process while creating his designs. “I imagine this girl who is a little bit disheveled, a little bit rushing around, you can’t really tell if she’s like totally put together or it’s not working,” he said, “just a little bit quirky, little bit weird, but always trying to push without putting too much effort in.”

March 2013

We also saw a lot of beautiful tuxedo pants, which Brandon thinks is essential to have this season. “Everybody needs a good cigarette pant…definitely something slouchy on top and skinny on the bottom.” This incredibly talented designer has truly made a mark in the industry, and has high hopes for the future. “With each collection, the response has been greater. So I hope we continue to work really hard and tirelessly to get to the next level. So many things can happen, and all I can do is go forward and working hard with the people around me and develop these relationships.” T e x t : Z o h a M em a r i Photos: Semant Jain, Ph.D.

CarMen MarC ValVo A perfect embodiment of dark, alluring, and elegance, Carmen Marc Valvo’s Fall 2013 collection was a brilliant spectacle. Inspired by “dark shadows, moonlit sonatas, baroque scrolls, and rock and roll”, he unveiled his line on February 8th at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week. Throughout the show, we saw a combination of separates, cocktail dresses, and beautiful gowns. Fitted, feminine silhouettes dominated the runway. Satin, leather, lace, fur and intricate crystal beading elegantly worked in harmony to produce dark yet romantic looks. Sheared mink and feathered foxes, along with leather square tile and baroque embroidery, only amplified the collection. The color palette consisted of black as well as deep shades of plum and pink that really stood out on the runway and made a major impact.

-24-

Hair and makeup were feminine yet edgy. Hair was pulled back in the front, and down loose in the back. Bold red lips complimented the deepcolored outfits quite well. Some looks included elbow-length black leather gloves, while others incorporated belts to accentuate the waist. Mary Janes, ankle strap pumps, and ankle boots completed the looks. Carmen Marc Valvo delivered yet another astonishing collection. His designs created a sense of mystery and wander, while being passionate and charming. TexT: Zoha MeMari PhoTos: seManT Jain, Ph.D.

ConCePT korea A magnificent collection was delivered as Concept Korea’s Fall 2013: Rhythm of Korea walked down the runway at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week. It was a collaboration between five talented designers to “promote Korean fashion designers and assist them in their attempts to break into the U.S. fashion market.” The result was a crowd-pleasing and memorable show. The five designers each showed their own interpretation of the “Rhythm of Korea” theme. KYE by Kathleen Hanhee Kye’s designs were bold and colorful, with head-to-toe matching prints, such as a graffiti print. The line came in mostly a deep yellow, tan, and black color palette, as well as a bright blue shade seen in fur coats. Choiboko by Choi Bo Ko showed designs that had an urban-street feel to them. They came in mostly a red, black, and white color palette. Coats and capes were so well made, and many looks incorporated a print with large Korean characters in various colors. Cres. E Dim. by Hongbum Kim presented a collection with deep, dark colors like merlot red and black. A lot of leather was used, with uniquely cut pieces, all of which created hard yet romantic designs.

-26-

March 2013

Lie Sang Bong by Lie San Bong opened with a glow-in-the-dark white hat that immediately captivated us. The rest of the collection consisted of separates and dresses in body-hugging silhouettes. The colors were dominantly white, black, and green, as seen in the geometric patterns used. Son Jung Wan by Son Jung Wan, who also showed a solo collection, presented an elegant and feminine line. The color palette ranged from green and tan to deep blue and purple. The romantic mixture of separates and dresses that incorporated satin and fur displayed the softer side of “Rhythm of Korea.” Overall, Concept Korea was an eclectic collection that showcased each designer’s vision and skills. Jenny PaCkhaM Go-to red carpet designer Jenny Packham showed viewers a season of dramatic style this season. Enriched with muted jewel tones and organza, the collection was smooth and subtle, and not at all boring. Transitioning from luscious peach gowns were tea length dresses with ruby accents, made sensual through the use of sheer paneling and deep necklines. Silhouettes played a huge role, and Jenny Packham knows exactly how to dress the curves of a woman’s body. With clients such as Beyoncé, Angelina Jolie, Kate Middleton and Reese Witherspoon on her roster, she has unsurprisingly made the collection very accessible despite its eveningwear appeal. In her past two collections, Packham stuck to her guns by using bias-cut gowns and embellishments—clearly her two favorite distinctions in fashion. But this time she used the glitter wisely: in an effort to sparkle, not outshine. Packham has a talent for creating beautiful designs and a long list of clients that make their viewers feel like they’re on a red carpet, even just for a night. Many of the gowns would have been perfect additions to recent “best-dressed” lists during the awards season, but we are sure this won’t be the last time we see her evening wear shine. Leather and sheer silhouettes conquered the runway for the Katya collection. Twilight patterns and navy blue were her typical color palette. She made innovative use of the hues by combining them with interesting patterns and textures. Her collection was very form fitting and tailored, with black being the central color alongside a printed fabric that looked like billowing smoke.

-30-

March 2013

The innovative use of fur and the constructive outerwear is what really made the collection come together; coats and jackets were completely modernized by combining both the aspects of luxury and elegance that Katya is known for. Fur and layers were both foundational features of the show and comprised most of the theme, but was emphasized by her use of floral patterns for fall and winter, which were exceptionally well done. She designed garments that were intricate, yet minimally refreshing. The presentation highlighted her ability to tailor yet also let her garments maintain motion. She followed the same trends as most designers this season – basic colors and busy, patterned fabrics combined to create contrast in the outfit. By making minimal use of accessories, she affirmed a heavy emphasis on the clothing. Overall, Katya did an excellent job of demonstrating stand-out patterns, and feminine tailoring. serGio DaVila Dusky and edgy men’s and women’s looks were shown at Sergio Davila’s Fall 2013 collection on February 7th at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week. His inspiration came from the “historical, dark, and foggy old South American cities like Lima, Peru.” During the show, we saw lots of coats and jackets with gold and silver applications. Dress shirts and knitted pants were also quite common looks. Fabrics used ranged from 100% organic Pima Cotton and Alpaca, to leather and wool cashmere. The color palette consisted of basic black, white and beige, along with copper, chocolate and red. A combination of solids and prints kept the collection interesting. Two prints in particular stood out from the looks; a Peruvian Dog print used for some of the shirts, and an eye-catching cranberry zigzag pattern used in knitted leggings. Models were styled with side-part hair; the women’s loose waves falling freely. Charcoal under-eye liner put emphasis on the eyes for the makeup. Black leather and animal print shoes and booties completed the looks. Sergio delivered a cool and cohesive collection, and each look held an element of intrigue. This once menswear designer continues to prove that his talent and craft can transcend to women’s fashion. TexT: Zoha MeMari PhoTos: seManT Jain, Ph.D.

March 2013

For F/W 2013 Tracy Reese put together her distinctly polished, ladylike look with modern prints, stylish hues, and fashionable accessories. Punk culture was the inspiration behind her latest collection, differing vastly from her typically classic design appeal. However, she successfully did just that by embracing bright, bold patterns and pops of color, which made for an astonishingly energetic visual display. Praised highly in the media for her A-line dresses, she didn’t neglect them here, designing the popular garments in trendy metallic shades. Drawing on a bit of wild inspiration, there was no lack of fun animal prints on the runway. The patterns turned up on skirts, coats, and sweaters, receiving a classy Tracy Reese spin. Though dresses are typically her main focus and a classic staple of her past collections, Tracy’s outerwear garments were just as gorgeous including a neon and leather coat. By using floral and plaid patterns, Reese completely strayed from the typical trends of winter fashion. Sequins shone brightly under the lights, and the layering of different designs and textures created a show that stood out among the rest. Audiences will remember Tracy Reese’s FW 2013 collection for a long time, and we will surely see more of her in the future. Text: Brooke-Ashley Peterson Photos: Semant Jain, Ph.D.

Venexiana Hungarian-born polymath Kati Stern is the creative force and visionary behind the rockn- roll couture house Venexiana. Not only an acclaimed fashion designer, Stern is also an architecture aficionado and a musical prodigy, though her most striking talent lies within the design industry; she has carved out a niche within. Kati launched her fashion house in 2003, unveiling her first collection in New York City for spring/ summer 2004. Nearly a decade later and the gifted European still designs fabulous eveningwear with a viva la glam flare. Her latest collection revealed nothing short of an exception, presenting another atypical parade of evening gowns for Venexiana’s autumn 2013 collection. Stern opened her 76-piece collection with a striking evening gown in magenta velvet and closed the show with a gold scalloped sequin number, with jewel-toned fabrics and dyed fur accents permeating throughout.

-36-

March 2013

The collection was homage to her signature gifts of paying immaculate attention to detail and juxtaposing material combinations. Stern paired delicate dresses beneath luxurious fur coats, capes, vests and trimmings in teal, fuchsia, blue and mahogany hues. The brilliant fox, mink and lamb accessories were worn atop equally sensational gowns in pale gold, frosted silver, plum satin and floral silk taffeta, to name a few. Venexiana flourished on the catwalk this season, leaving couture darlings drooling for the fantasy of fall. Text: Shannon Ryan Photos: Semant Jain, Ph.D.
