INTERVIEW: STEFAN DOTTER

DIGITAL
# Stefan, tell us about your career as a photographer. How did it happen that you have developed a passion for photography? It kind of happened overnight actually and not that long ago. I started playing around with an amateur camera in fall last year to get into fashion-photo-journalism. I don’t think you just pick up a camera and you are instantly passionate about it, you develop passion over a period of time, that’s why at first I didn’t really shoot a lot. It all changed in april this year when I finally realised how looking through the viewfinder changes your whole perception of reality. From that moment on my whole life shifted to photography and I’ve been hooked on it ever since. # What do you want to express with your photography? I want to create authentic moments. For me personally photography is not mainly an instrument to express yourself, but to discover secrets about yourself and the person in front of your lens. Taking photographs is to break into another person’s morality, vulnerability and mutability. You learn about someones personality without pursuing the path of language and within the whole interaction you find out things about yourself which you never noticed. # Where do you get inspiration for your photography from? When you start photographing your eye gets orientated by photographers you admire. At first the work of David Bellemere, Luc Braquet and Matteo Montanari inspired me, but as soon as you get more experienced you realise that inspiration approaches you from every direction. Ansel Adams said “You -154-
don’t make a photograph just with a camera. You bring to the act of photography all the pictures you have seen, the books you have read, the music you have heard, the people you have loved.” This is the most accurate description of inspiration in fine arts, in my opinion. # Do you remember your first big project? I would consider my recent campaign for the leather brand ENSO as my first big project. It was the nicest shoot I had so far, fantastic team, beautiful venue and full artistic freedom. # What does characterize a “good photo” in your opinion? A good photograph makes you feel the way you do when you want to read a line of a poem twice. # You are also Creative Director of your own "WhiteLies Magazine". What is "WhiteLies Magazine”? WhiteLies Magazine is a completely independent culture publication, operating in a very specific field of visuals. It’s our aim to dissect futuristic and forgotten aesthetics in a variety of art forms from a technocratic point of view. The core is visually pleasing content to create an emotional impact with our audience. # And what are your next plans? Is there a future project you would “die” for? I’ll be putting my whole focus on photography and WhiteLies Magazine, the things
CPHFW S/S 15
that make me happy and keep me busy right now. As for future projects, I don’t really plan far ahead. Everything happens somehow spontaneous but yeah I would die to shoot the Chanel Haute Couture and the Iris van Herpen shows in the future. #  You attended Copenhagen Fashion Week. Tell us about your time there. The best three days of fashion week I ever had to be honest. In Copenhagen everything is very youthful and inventive with a
-155-
bold scandinavian stamp on it. At the shows I saw everything from an artificial white swamp at Han Kjobenhaven, a parking lot with exploding waterpipes at Wali Mohammed Barrech and an intense dance performance at Henrik Vibskov. Everything feels more like a big family event instead of a business gettogether. The parties were great, the designs innovative, the graduate collections inspired Copenhagen knows how to do fashion right, I will be back for sure.
