December 2013
# Editorial Dear readers, All around the world, people are coming together to celebrate the end of the year. And there are some things we can all agree on in the festive season: eating delicious food, of course, imbibing too much alcohol and sharing in the annual trauma that is known as present buying. This is the reason we're giving our readers lots of great presents to win, which liven up any Christmas feast. In our VOTE & WIN you can gather prizes with a total value of over 2000 Euro. Among others there are valuable beauty products, stylish clothes, accessories and technical gadgets. Of course we have exciting editorials from all over the world again. The six exclusive December editorials we present either spread a melancholy nature spirit or a tough city temper. And we show the winner of our last editorial voting including an interview with the photographer. Last but not least we feature two fashion & design events that took place in November. First, Semant Jain Ph.D. visited Fashion Houston and he presents some of his favourite shows. Secondly, we went to Cologne Fine Art with its ‘Style Icons’ exhibition, a high-calibre show of design in classic cars, fashion and objects. December is always a time of reflection on the successes and challenges of the past year - and on our hopes for the ensuing twelve months. We had a wonderful year 2013 and we want to thank all contributors – photographers & filmmakers with their teams and editors, all our readers who like SUPERIOR Magazine and of course the whole SUPERIOR team for their work. We wish all of you a happy and precious 2014 - may all your troubles last as long as your New Year's resolutions. Best, Tom & Marc -13-

TALBOT RUNHOF Fashion Houston Wortham Theatre, Houston, TX November 12, 2013 editor, photographer SEMANT JAIN, PH.D. fashion writer LINDA ZID website WWW.SJCHRONICLE.COM
Talbot Runhof presented a diverse, elegant Spring/Summer 2014 collection at Fashion Houston on November 12, 2013. According to the designers, who are known for glamorous cocktail and evening dresses, their customer is "cool, subtle, elegant and discrete." Every piece is said to have a detail that "might not be obvious at first glance, but once you find it, it's what makes you fall in love." That attention to detail can be seen in the ruching in these pale blue, angelic gowns, some with subtle hints of light rustcolored accents. Off-kilter shoulder treatments and flaring at the bottom of the gowns accentuated the flattering fit of the looks. Those gowns contrasted while also complementing monochromatic, sunburst dresses that appeared on the runway in both long and cocktail lengths. The black and white made for a juxtaposition that was both playful and elegant.
-52-
December 2013
Black and white were also dominant in some of the powerful evening looks that were showcased. The fitted dresses included shimmering sexy looks and striking color blocking.
-53-
DIGITAL
-54-
December 2013
Energetic patterns blended nicely among those sleeker looks, as seen in charged black-and-white striped pieces and flowy palm-tree patterned dresses, with one look combining both patterns. Another pattern used black and white color blocking in dresses with day-to-night appeal.
-55-
DIGITAL
-56-
December 2013
The models all had slicked back hair styles and peep-toe heels, which were highlighted with some of the shorter, flirtier patterns, which sparkled with splashes of marigold and cornflower. The demure looks also featured high collars and flouncy skirts. The brand's design philosophy is said to be inspired by the quote: "It's about knowing where to stop. Going too far can be as bad as not going far enough." Amid the patterns, the designers also showcased simple but elegant, shimmery solid dresses in pale blue, gold and ivory taffeta. The gowns were fitted at the top and flowed gracefully at the bottoms, with some looks featuring jeweled collars.
-57-
Talbot Runhof gets its name from founders Johnny Talbot and Adrian Runhof. Talbot has an engineering background and is behind the intricate construction and mathematical precision of each piece and Runhof studied business and oversees the image and marketing aspects of the brand. The label opened its flagship store in Munich in 2000.
All dresses are handcrafted exclusively in Germany, although the designers work closely with fabric mills in Italy, France and Switzerland to create new types of stretch, prints, washing techniques, bonding, thread mixes and weaving techniques.

MARIOS SCHWAB Fashion Houston Wortham Theatre, Houston, TX November 12, 2013 On November 12, 2013, designer Marios Schwab presented his Spring/Summer 2014 collection, Contours in Homage, at the fourth annual Fashion Houston. Schwab’s new collection, like past ones, accentuated women’s curves with embroidery, an airbrush technique, and backpack straps. A sequence of looks moving from sophisticated modern cocktail dresses to sheer flowing gowns and tailored pants created a ready-to-wear collection for night and day. To open the show, modern form-fitting dresses with a spray-paint effect appeared simple but were flawlessly ingenious in design and construction. Classic black and white backgrounds were highlighted with crimson red and cobalt blue detail in just the right places so they accentuated the outline and curves of the models’ bodies.
-58-
managing editor SEMANT JAIN, PH.D. article editor ELIZABETH NASH, SEMANT JAIN, PH.D. fashion writer MICHELLE O. DENTE website WWW.SJCHRONICLE.COM
December 2013
A cascading jeweled collar, emulating a necklace, emphasized the necklines of luxurious evening gowns in white and black minis. These gowns also gave the illusion of bare necks and arms but cleverly maintained modesty by using sheer nude fabric. A long white gown with high splits on either side included a sheer fabric beneath with cobalt, emerald, and white beaded embroidery.
The sheer black pieces brought tasteful sexiness to the runway with elegance and sophistication. Schwab contoured the pieces with a scribbled embroidery effect, which not only added detail, but also coverage. An outlined jeweled turtleneck and scribbled contouring on arms, neckline, chest, hips, and legs embellished a long, form-fitting black dress. Underneath the sheath, a black highwaisted bottom added not only coverage, but also modern style.
-59-
DIGITAL
Schwab’s next set was more formal but still relaxed with Grecian sandals and white backpacks. Like the earlier gowns, these projected a chic, modern appeal with classic silhouettes. Two long gowns showed similar technique, with contouring embroidery from the bust to the thighs over gold-colored sequined miniskirts.
The sequins also carried over into tunic tops and conservative skirts, adding a splash of sparkle to the collection. A black tunic shirt with large metallic staples to clasp the sleeves to the body of the garment added a sporty appeal on top of the sheer sequined skirt, while a long, flowing sheer skirt boosted the elegance of a glitzy golden tunic.
-60-
December 2013
A contemporary black gridded fabric added texture and stability over a white tube-top dress, tailored pants, and modernly constructed shirt. Classic trousers were wrapped in the gridded pattern and matched with an unfinished structured white shirt with stapled-on sleeves. Marios Schwab delivered an acute sense of detailed attention to the woman’s body in the most complimentary way, enhancing curves with spray paint and slimming the body by the placement of patterns and use of fitted silhouettes.
-61-
His Spring/Summer 2014 collection praised the female form by using sheer and gridded fabrics to showcase the body and reveal skin, thus capturing the beauty not only within the clothes, but underneath them, too. Schwab’s collection was refined in structure, yet raw and seductive in its use of fabrics. His quality designs are ideal for a confident woman who’s elegant but can be casual at the same time.

TRISH WESTCOAT POUND Fashion Houston Wortham Theatre, Houston, TX November 15, 2013
photographer SEMANT JAIN, PH.D. editor ELIZABETH NASH, SEMANT JAIN, PH.D. fashion writer MAEVE RICAURTE website WWW.SJCHRONICLE.COM
On November 15th, 2013, Trish Westcoat Pound made a monumental step forward in her rapid-fire fashion career by presenting her Haute Hippie collection at Fashion Houston. Just five years after its launch, Haute Hippie is sold in 300+ stores worldwide. Authenticity and relevance are at the heart of the brand’s success. Ms. Westcoat Pound, a self-professed “RoBo” (rock ‘n roll bohemian)
woman, embodies the casual, glamorous ethos Haute Hippie represents. Her clothing is ideal for the sophisticated (haute) eclectic (hippie). The brand’s accessible aesthetic translates easily from day to night. By playing with various layers, shocks of color, and brazen prints, a woman can build an entire wardrobe that smoothly transitions from city street to nightclub.
-62-
December 2013
The collection illustrated Haute Hippie’s wide range of appealing looks and relevance to free-spirited globetrotters. One ensemble drew attention to a powerful, sexy shoulder with shimmering shoulder-pads; a sheer black skirt, working-woman hair pouf, and towering heels gave the traditional career-woman ensemble considerable edginess. Another piece in the same segment harkened
-63-
back to the 1920’s flapper: As the carefully crafted beading shimmied with the model’s every step, the dramatic v-cut neck drew attention to a more delicate shoulder. In another ensemble, bright orange zippered leather leggings starkly contrasted with a more traditional shoulder-padded trench. In each ensemble, dark, rouged cheeks and rich red lip stain accentuated chic femininity.
DIGITAL
A handmade aspect made the brand’s flapper dresses, floral print gowns, tuxedo coats, and whimsical blouses unique, and the balanced use of black and white grounded the looks, all of which could be worn to the office, a cocktail party, or the airport. Lighter lipstick and subtler rouge gently complemented these ensembles.
-64-
December 2013
In a subtler floral segment, sheer materials, peep-toe heels, and wrap-around belts expressed effortless femininity. One model, red lips set in a knowing grin, strutted purposefully down the runway with her sheer wrap falling off her shoulder. Demonstrating the flexibility of each look, some of the models wore their hair up and others down. Black and white also dominated this segment, and balance was again key: If a model’s garment was predominantly white, her heels and accessories were black, and vice-versa.
-65-
DIGITAL
With original prints, embellishments such as spangles and embroidered roses, and smart and exciting designs, Westcoat Pound has pioneered a uniquely wearable form of high fashion-one that perfectly balances the upscale and the practical.

CATHERINE DEANE Fashion Houston Wortham Center, Houston, TX November 12, 2013
editor in chief SEMANT JAIN, PH.D. fashion writer MARISA LYON website WWW.SJCHRONICLE.COM
On Tuesday, November 12th, 2013, Catherine Deane showcased her exquisite forms of art at the Wortham Center in downtown Houston, Texas during the fourth annual Fashion Houston. The Spring 2014 collection featured an abundance of lace, beading, delicate folds, and soft accents, but also incorporated edgier notes such as leather.
-68-
December 2013
In a color palette of sophisticated slate, sexy black, and feminine pastels, a mixture of alluring full-length gowns and sheath silhouettes danced across the runway. The pieces fluently transitioned from casual chic to elegant evening to glamorous red-carpet.
-69-
DIGITAL
-70-
December 2013
Sheer ivory adorned with elaborate beading and stitched florals varied from short flutter sleeves to transparent full length, adding an element of diversity for cool, crisp spring evenings. Glittery back details were highlighted by the models’ gracefully sideswept hair. Glowing pink cheeks and rosy lips enhanced the enchanting designs. Deane effortlessly combined leather and lace, giving more casual looks a sleek, sophisticated edge. One style combined a metallic leather laser cut skirt with navy bodice while another paired a leather skirt with shimmery lace bodice with leather trim.
-71-
DIGITAL
Deane’s signature beading and dainty embellishments were seen on high-wasted belts and tightly fitted bodices that enhanced the female figure, offset by flowing multilayer’s of silk, satin and chiffon. A hazy purple gown with deep V-neck and shimmering silver belt and shoulder beading was a standout among the timeless collection.
-72-
December 2013
While some looks color blocked traditional black and white, others featured silky white layered under sheer black. One gown cinched at the waist and continued with a floral embroidered layer into an elegant V-neck while another extended to the neckline.

STYLE ICONS In a special exhibition COLOGNE FINE ART presented fifty years of design history – a high-calibre show of design in classic cars, fashion and objects. SUPERIOR MAGAZINE got the opportunity to talk with Cornelia Zinken, Director of Cologne Fine Art about the 'Style Icons' show. Interview by Tom Felber | Photos by Sebastian Drüen Fotografie
# Cornelia Zinken, a few days ago COLOGNE FINE ART took place. How satisfied are you with this year's show in general? In general this year's Cologne Fine Art can definitely be seen as a great success. Our concept of presenting a crossover of different styles and eras from antiques to modern art, from paintings and sculpture to applied art and jewellery was very well received and attracted more than 14,000 visitors from established
-86-
collectors to first time buyers. The exhibiting dealers and galleries reported strong sales also to new buyers. As it is our aim to create a show that invites its visitors to discover new things for them, we are very pleased that this concept worked out.
December 2013
# One highlight this year was the 'Style Icons' exhibition. For all who had not the opportunity to see this exhibition, what was 'Style Icons'? 'Style Icons' was an exhibition where we were looking at the flowing boundaries between form and function, between art, design and everyday object. The exhibition showcased a group of top-quality, specially selected exhibits drawn from the fields of classic car design, haute couture and accessories all created between the 1920s and 1960s. As a very fine example of pre-war design we showed among others the Bugatti 57C Vanvooren which was 'made to measure' for its first owner Fernand Chaussivert following his own concept and design sketches. post-war highlight was the 1962 Chrysler Ghia L6.4 Coupé, ordered and built for Rat Pack legend Dean Martin and customized for him by noted Hollywood car customizer George Barris. One of the highlights displayed in the group of haute couture gowns and fine leather-goods by luxury Paris-based labels was a remarkable vintage trunk crafted by the prestigious trunkmaker François Goyard. Dating from the early 1930s, it conjured up the world of luxury travel and the ars vivendi of international high society of the age.

#  It is unusual to present automobile design within an art fair. How did it come that you had this idea and why do you think COLOGNE FINE ART is the right platform for such an exhibition? The approach to present classic cars and haute couture as that what they are - namely high class design objects - in the context where they belong - namely at a fair that is dedicated to art and design - is something that has interested me for quite some years now. A few years back when I was still working as Head of Group Marketing for the art insurer AXA ART I included an Alfa Romeo that had been driven by Enzo Ferrari in their sponsor's lounge at Tefaf. The display was already then met with great enthusiasm by the visitors and ever since then I had it in mind to dedicate a whole show to

the topic. When I took over the Cologne Fine Art last year it was clear to me that this was the place to do it, as it goes naturally with the fair's concept of crossover and its intention to invite visitors to discover new things. I was lucky that the idea was greatly supported by the two curators Jaap Braam Ruben and Monika Gottlieb who found true design objects - cars and fashion that where created 'made to measure' by some of the finest designers of its time.

#  How was the feedback on 'Style Icons' by the "traditional" art fair exhibitors and by the visitors?
#  After the show is before the show. Will special exhibitions like the 'Style Icons' become an integral part of COLOGNE FINE ART?
The feedback we received on the show was beyond anything we expected. Not only was the show met with great enthusiasm by our visitors, but also by our more 'traditional' exhibitors.
After the fantastic feedback we received, we are now discussing options and ways to continue and develop 'Style Icons' in the upcoming years. We already have quite a few very interesting ideas to move forward with the topic, but it would be too early now to go into details.

INTERVIEW WITH
JC CERILLA
JC Cerilla won this month's Editorial Voting. We talked with him about his career. Interview by Tom Felber
# How did it come that you developed a passion for photography? I studied in a top art school in Manila, Philippines and I discovered my love for photography during the very first day of basic photography class. # What do you like to express with your photography? I want to express my visions and inspirations while showcasing my style and aesthetics as an artist. # Do you remember your first motif? Actually yes I remember I did a sports glam concept with my ex girlfriend for a school project. I got an A+ for that shoot. # Who are your idols in photography? Steven Meisel, Greg Kadel, Tim Walker, Txema Yeste, Sebastian Kim, Emma Summerton, Camilla Akrans, and the duo Mert and Marcus. # What makes a good photo "a good photo" in your opinion? For me a good photo is something that gets you inspired. -126-
# Where do you get your inspiration from? I get my inspirations from past experiences, my subjects, emotions, films, fashion, magazines, movie titles, current affairs, words, phrases, music, history, design, architecture and art. # What is beauty for you? Beauty for me is an art form. # Tell us a little bit about the story behind the "Preppy Punk" editorial. I was inspired by the show Gossip Girl and how the characters are styled with preppy looks. I wanted to do my own twist on it by mixing the preppy look with a punk chick. # What are your next plans? Is there any future project you would "die for"? I’m currently in Manila right now doing some projects and editorial works. When I get back to New York my plan is to keep on shooting and eventually look into getting signed by top artist reps. I would really love to do a shoot with my favorite supermodels models like Cara, Coco, Liu Wen and Sui He.
