ADC PORTFOLIO NIGHT 13th EDITION Mid of May 13th Portfolio Night took place. Portfolio Night brings together thousands of young creatives, hundreds of creative directors, dozens of host agencies in cities around the world, and a select few global partners, all in a “one night only” event across the planet. For Germany the creative crowd met in the Berlin office of the international advertising network McCann.

JUNE 2015

Tom and Marc from SUPERIOR MAGAZINE were also among the creative directors and met great young creatives. After the event we talked to Chief Creative Officer Elke Klinkhammer and the winner Johannes Guldner. #  Elke, attending 13th Portfolio Night we had the impression that the participants were very happy with the event. Drawing a conclusion, how was the event from your point of view? It was great to see so many „hungry“ talents in our agency space in Berlin and the load of creativity. The concept of the Portfolio Night is very appealing because it’s a direct exchange between young people and Creative Pro’s. Apart from the three official dates each talent had with a Creative Director or Executive there were many nonofficial dates and conversations that lead to a vibrant atmosphere and mutual inspiration. #  McCann hosted the Portfolio Night. Why is it important for you as an advertising agency to support a program like that? The ADC Portfolio Night is the worlds largest Portfolio Review and we all felt part of something bigger. The energy was amazing and we where proud of hosting the Portfolio Night in Berlin. Berlin is the creative and international hot spot in Germany and we at McCann want to open the doors for exactly that: young talents, inspirational ideas and exciting creatives from all over the world. We are a global network - the concept of ADC Portfolio Night is the perfect match.

-65-

Elke Klinkhammer

#  What can the winners expect during their time in New York City? New York City – capital of advertisement - is home of iconic creatives and entrepreneurial spirit. The 23 winners will probably have the best time of their young career. They’ll get the chance to work on a real project guided by the ADN Global Networks office and work with the best.

Johannes Guldner

WINNER #  Johannes, you won the 13. Portfolio Night in Berlin. Congratulations! How does that feel, winning such a prestigious prize in the age of 23? At the first moment, it was surreal. I’ve never thought, that I could ever win in Berlin. When they announced me as the winner it was like: am I dreaming? Could someone wake me up please? It took me about one week to realize what happened. The day after the Portfolio Night was a normal day in the office for me. So it was a bit stressful to travel back to Hamburg in the next morning, sitting at my desk and realizing slowly the last night. But now, a few weeks later and directly before travelling to the Big Apple I’m proud to be called the Berlin All-Star. It’s a really unique feeling because now your work get’s recognized a lot more than before. -66-

I’ll always tell everybody that the age should not be important when you look on the skills or portfolio of somebody. On the other hand, it’s terrific to get announced All-Star at such a young age. I’ve started really early with photography, got my hands on marketing at the age of 17 in my school. And it never let me go. For me personally winning this prize tells me that I’m on the right way and doing the right stuff. In my opinion it´s really important for young creatives to know themselves and their work, especially in relation to all the other creatives. What’s also important is direct feedback. All of that I experienced at the Portfolio Night, so I have to say, that I’m really proud to win in Berlin and I’ll give my very best in NYC.

JUNE 2015

only city in Germany where I would like to live and work is Hamburg. So I went there and started my studies in communication design at the Institute of Design. I got the opportunity from my university to work part time along my studies and so I travelled a lot and started to enter not only photographic competitions. I travelled for the German Goethe Institut to Uzbekistan and to China and the USA for other clients. Later, for my studies I had to do an internship in an agency. I decided to do it at Serviceplan in Hamburg. My dream was to work on an automobile account and right there I got the chance to work on BMW. After finishing my internship I got the opportunity to work part time as an art director assistant at Serviceplan along with my last courses in university. This is really challenging because we have a lot of shootings and so I have the chance to get my hands on the process and to learn a lot. That’s it! Johannes Guldner #  Tell us about you. You professional career so far, your inspirations. As I told you already, I’ve started really early with photography. I got a bit crazy about it and worked in my own, little studio from the age of 16. Later I got my hands on marketing in high school. There we got the chance to graduate with the focus on marketing and advertising. At that point I decided to study communication design and get to know the whole process in the creative industry instead of only knowing a part of it and only taking the photos. So it started. I travelled a lot after high school, worked for different clients from Bosnia to Australia. When I came back home, there was a chance to study near my home town in Southern Germany. But then I decided, the -67-

Well, where my inspirations come from? A really difficult question. On the one hand I have to say that my everyday life and all impressions all day long are my most important source of inspiration. I’ve learned from my travelling and from my work as a photographer to take a look at things from a lot more angles, not only from the ones that are visible for the normal eye. That helps a lot. What’s also really important for me is not to have prejudices. In my opinion you can only be really creative without them. Last but not least I’m always telling myself and it’s like my personal motivation phrase: If you can dream it you can do it!

DIGITAL

#  In August you will fly to New York City and work on a project together with other winners. What do you expect from this opportunity? A lot more inspiration! I’m really looking forward to the week in NYC. Not only because New York is one of my favorite cities around the globe, but also because I know that I’ll meet there a lot of really interesting and brilliant people. To network with them getting to know new points of view from other parts of the world will be very exciting. #  What are your plans for the future? Difficult to answer for me. I think I’ll focus a bit more on bringing the digital world into our every day environment, to bring it alive in a haptic way. I would like to use the internet of things and create a new generation of experience design. My route to follow is definitely the world of agencies in the next few years. But first I have to finish my last course. Perhaps New York, maybe Hamburg. I will see what the next years offer for me. I´m looking forward to the chances the next years will offer to me. #  Thanks a lot. We wish you an exciting trip to New York City and hope to hear from you about your experience there.

JOHNY DAR – HORSE WHISPERS Artist and designer Johny Dar is dedicated to making the impossible possible. Known for breaking boundaries to create original and extraordinary artistic experiences, Johny Dar pioneers a unique artistic expression through many mediums. Always determined to take on the next challenge in his quest to offer original, inspirational artwork to a global audience, Dar decided to apply his unique style of hand-painted body art to horses, inspired by his personal love for horses and his calendar for 2014, 'Tuuli by Dar'.

-128-

photos Š JOHNY DAR

JUNE 2015

For Johny Dar, painting 14 models within 24 hours prior to his runway show for Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin last summer was not enough of a challenge. Inspired to embrace new mediums and ways of creating a unique expression, Johny Dar’s latest vision led him to Dubai to realize his dream of painting an Arabian stallion, for a new art series called 'Horse Whispers.'

One of the challenges this time was, to realize the project although, of course, Bader was not subjected to any medical supplements during his time in the studio. Instead Bader got apples, carrots and plenty of love. This helped to break everyone’s, including Bader’s, expectations of what was possible, as Dar trained Bader throughout the process to be as patient and focused as himself.

Working with horses allowed Dar to explore a new and powerful live medium, and to celebrate the beauty of the horse through his art. The series was created with ‘Bader’ - an Arabian stallion who was photographed in 12 different looks constructed under Dar’s creative direction - each one expressing a different element of his personality and distinct ‘whisper’ of inspiration.

Johny Dar’s 'Horse Whispers' is a captivating new expression and powerful fusion of art and nature. His vision is to deliver a new perspective upon the animal kingdom and the invisible threads connecting humans and horses, as well as to communicate an inspiring vision of faith and inspiration symbolized by and expressed through the majestic beauty of the horse. 'Horse Whispers' is currently on display in Johny Dar’s new gallery in Friedrichstrasse 123 in Berlin. The artist and designer about his new space: “It’s the story of growth. A real refreshment in space and function. Just big enough to showcase the various mediums we are currently exhibiting - from hand drawn pieces, acrylic action paintings, oil on wood, photography, incl. 'Tuuli by Dar' and 'Horse Whispers', scenes of DAR the BOOK Vol.3 and the sculpture 'The Queen of Pearls'.
