# Editorial Dear readers, You might wonder that this time on our cover we show musicians – the band TOKIO HOTEL – and not a model. But this fits perfect with our intention, meeting creative people. Very short-termed we got the opportunity to accompany TOKIO HOTEL’s video production for their latest album in Berlin. Believe us, we had an exciting day with Bill and the whole crew. We also made an interview with them. And finally we had the chance for a photo shooting. While you can read the interview and TOKIO HOTEL story in this issue, we will show you the backstage photos from the video production and the fashion editorial next week in an extended version of our March issue. THE ''TOKIO HOTEL'' FAIRY TALE Four friends, a pair of twins, one band, a massive success. Their story resembles a fairy tale and if there were people who don’t know TOKIO HOTEL they would barely believe it.

Raised in Magdeburg, a town in the north of Germany, the twins Bill and Tom Kaulitz founded their first band BLACK QUESTIONMARK when they were not even ten years old. 2001, a few years later, they met Gustav Schäfer and Georg Listing at a gig and started to make music together as a band called DEVILISH, soon to be renamed TOKIO HOTEL. A music producer discovered them at a local concert and when they released their first album in 2005, TOKIO HOTEL was contracted by UNIVERSAL MUSIC GROUP. The band shot to fame: The album “Durch den Monsun“ immediately went first place on the German charts and the album “Schrei“ was sold 1,5 million times worldwide. In 2007, TOKIO HOTEL toured around the world with their second album „Zimmer 483“. Concert halls were filled with crying and screaming teenagers, fans from foreign countries started learning German, girls cut

school and fainted when they saw the boys. You either adored TOKIO HOTEL or you hated them, there was no in between. But the band’s success had it’s down sides, too. Especially Tom and Bill couldn’t leave home without security, going to school became impossible and paparazzi were following them twenty-four-seven. When the twins came home after their 21st birthday, discovering that someone had burgled their house and ransacked their closets they finally decided to leave Germany and move to Los Angeles to come to rest. Four years later TOKIO HOTEL’s fourth album “Kings of Suburbia“ was released in October 2014. The boys don’t consider themselves as “being back“ because they were never really gone but they were able to recharge their batteries and now go on tour again from march 2015 on to “Feel it All“.

# Thank you so much for having us! Since your last album was released in 2009, a lot has changed. How was the process of recording different this time? Bill: I think the main difference between all the previous albums and this album is that we produced everything on our own. First of all, we had a home studio, something we never had before. And we didn’t have a time limit – we were just writing and making music, without it having to be ready at a certain point. We were able to do what we love and make an album that we are completely comfortable with. Tom: I feel like everything changed! Our first album came out ten years ago. Then, we were fifteen, now we are twenty-five... the whole band has developed. We changed in the way we produce, write and play our music. We changed as artists, as people. I think the only guy who didn’t make a development at all is Georg...(laughs) Georg: I am still fresh. Tom: Still the bass player. But except for that, everything changed... Bill: But naturally! Tom: And it should. It would we terrible if we didn’t change during those 10 years and still made music the way we did when „Schrei“ was released. # It’s so great how you guys have managed to stick together. What binds you, as a band? Bill: I think it is the fact that we grew up together. We were already friends and got to know each other because we lived in this small little town. We were the only young musicians there! -32-
Tom: And before Tokio Hotel, we were already a band for 5 years! Bill: Because we knew each other for such a long time and were such good friends, we are more like a family. We have never gotten to a point of terrible fighting, we respect each other and our differences. We are like brothers and know each other very well...and I think that is the reason why. # During your time in California, did you take on any other artistic pursuits? Tom: We just concentrated on our music. But because only Bill and I moved to Los Angeles, everybody always asks us: „How is that for the band?“ But I feel like you can only do something like that when you are really close – splitting up was never, ever a question. We never wanted to do anything else. Bill is really into fashion, but except for that, music has always been our priority. # The L.A stereotype is that of super fit, health obsessed vegans. Can you confirm? Tom: Definitely. Bill: Sometimes I feel like a euro junkie when I’m there. Everybody is so healthy! And we drink, we smoke, we don’t work out and we eat so much Junk-Food, it’s crazy. People go to bed really early there! # Berlin is quite the opposite... Bill: Life wouldn’t be as easy here, but I love Berlin so much. Tom: Of all the cities in Germany, I would definitely live in Berlin. I’m thinking about getting a place here.

Bill: Now that we don’t live in Germany anymore, we have really learned to appreciate it. # Did you experience a lot of clashing mentalities in L.A? Bill: L.A is beautiful – but sometimes really fake and unreliable. But as Germany, we were raised to be super punctual, and we are always on time. Even in the horrible L.A traffic! That’s a typical German thing...but that’s exactly why American people love Germans so much. # What was your favorite L.A moment? And what place do you consider your home? Bill: I think I could move to any place in the world tomorrow...and as long as I have my dog, my brother and my family, this place will be home for me. We grew up traveling, me and Tom had our first own apartment
when we were only fifteen! And then we were on the road for so long...I feel at home very easily. But for now, I would definitely say that it is Los Angeles. Tom: But it doesn’t have anything to with places, it’s the feeling. Bill: I love the freedom there! This influenced the whole album a lot, living a life that was normal compared to our life in Europe. We were able to go out, have coffee...we were just having fun, living life, getting inspired. # I believe this must have been very refreshing. Bill: It was! It was so nice. The first time in years where we could just be on our own.

# But when you return to your hometown Magdeburg now – how does it make you feel?
Tom: Me too, I hoped that it was just a phase.
Bill: It feels so strange. I remember the first time I went back, it felt like a completely different life. We have changed so much... everything feels smaller. But that just might be because we’re taller now. It’s definitely weird.
Bill: We really felt the need to protect the last remaining bits of our privacy. I just could not understand why everybody would give away something so important so easily. But this had to change – you have to get into it nowadays, so we faced it and learnt to enjoy it a little. There are many upsides to social media. It’s a very direct way to connect to your fans directly, to communicate without tabloids getting in the way and I think that’s great. I use Instagram a lot nowadays. But we still have boundaries – some people post stuff that I just cant believe.
Tom: But it’s the same for everybody – anyone who ever moved to a completely different city and started a new life must feel the same way coming home. Bill: I just don’t have the connection to the city – I never had it, even when I lived there. People showed a lot of local pride, cheered for the school and so on. I never wanted to do this – I felt like I didn’t belong. Tom: It’s different for Gustav and Georg though, they still live there. Georg: Yeah, we both still live in Magdeburg. # Do you ever feel some sort of disconnect? You have changed so much, but the place remained the same? Georg: Kind of...(Tom starts laughing) but we travel a lot, so for me its a good experience to wind down there, relax. I spend a lot of time with my family, go for a walk with my dog. It’s a perfect balance. # Our age is becoming even more and more digital. How have you, wanting to hide away a little, dealt with the rise of social media? Bill: In the beginning, we weren’t doing the whole thing at all. No Facebook, no Twitter, nothing. I actually kind of hoped it would go away again. -35-
# When Tokio Hotel really took off, all those platforms were almost completely non-existent. Are you glad that was the case, especially considering the privacy you guys lost so fast? Tom: Definitely. Bill: Well, when we started, all of those things were still pretty new. But with projects like Tokio Hotel TV, we were one of the first bands to have a daily podcast. And that definitely helped. But today, it’s just so hard! There are so many people sharing their music and their talents now, it’s almost impossible to become a YouTubestar I think. Tom: It got so big – it makes it harder for everybody. Ten years ago, when we performed in Japan, we thought to ourselves: „If we mess this up, nobody in Europe is going to know.“ But now, if you do, everybody will know so fast! Bill: Exactly! If I do something on stage, and then after the show I turn on my phone – and it’s already everywhere. It’s crazy.

Tom: There are ups, but then there are definitely downs. Everything got way more complex in general. With the promotion of our new album, we had to consider this too. Music Television doesn’t really exist anymore I think, Social Media has replaced it. # It just doesn’t affect us professionally though – how do you think it has affected you as people, not as musicians? How do you handle personal relationships? Bill: This didn’t change me at all I think. Or did it? (He looks around. The other members shake their heads.) Tom is really old-school when it comes to phones, he is almost never on it and just texts or calls. He doesn’t even have apps or follows blogs. Tom: I want to take this as an opportunity to promote my Instagram account. Its „TOMKAULITZ“ and I haven’t uploaded any picture yet – but my goal is to have more followers than the rest of the band, without ever posting a picture. If I achieve that goal, maybe I finally will post something. Georg: Just one picture though. # Since your fame came so early and so fast – did you feel like you missed out on some experiences? And are there some experiences you’re glad you missed? Bill: We just lived a completely different life – I am really glad that I didn’t have to go to school anymore, because studying for me is the worst and I just wanted to get out. Tom: Me too – getting up really early in the morning, to go to school on a rainy day...I’m glad I missed that. Bill: But on the other hand, we were always really guarded. We just had a small -36-
group of people we trusted and interacted with. And we had to take responsibility really early – I thought I was old enough to handle it and wanted to control everything. But looking back, I definitely should have waited a little longer, maybe all that responsibility was a little too much. If I could go back, I would do that differently. We had to grow up really fast. # You mentioned before that you handle the internet very carefully – do you think that might be to distance yourself from all the pressure you had growing up? Bill: A little bit, yes. We are definitely trying to distance ourselves, but it’s hard. This is a very personal job, you put out your own story for everyone to see...there was a lot of hate as well. Tom: It’s hard to trust people – back in the days, you would say something to somebody and it would be in the newspaper the next day. We have gotten really careful – every drink we had, every girl we slept with... we realized we had to protect ourselves. And we still do today. # I remember there was a lot of negative backlash – almost bullying. What would you say to those people now? Bill: I have to say – I enjoyed that a little. It’s better if people have a negative opinion, than no opinion at all. But when I look back, I sometimes think: „I maybe would have dressed differently.“ But I never forced anything – this just came naturally. But it really was important to prove ourselves to people, especially with the second album. We had to show them that we are not just a one hit wonder, that we really can play our instruments and that we can make it as a band. And I think we did.

# Bill – you have always expressed yourself. But today, a lot of your character traits are not just more accepted, but celebrated. Do you think this enables you to be more yourself? And how do you, as a band, deal with this? Bill: I never really fit in I think. This is why I hated going to school...I need to be free, I hate it when people tell me what to do. But I don’t do it either – it’s important that people can express themselves, no matter what. I would never tell Georg what to wear or something. # But there is always going to be some negativity – how do you protect yourselves? Tom: People are celebrating individuality more and more every day. But we never had that problem in our group. We looked out for each other, protected each other. Bill expressed himself at a very young age like few people would have done it, and sometimes that needed protection. We always had each other, and that was so helpful. I wouldn’t know where I’d be without him.
# The sticking together, the looking out for each other, the always doing what you want, no matter what – Tokio Hotel’s image became a beacon of hope for people who were bullied. For outcasts, for people who dressed differently. That must make you very proud! Bill: Whenever I see that, even today, it makes me so happy. It’s the sweetest thing – to inspire people, to make them want to be themselves. It really touches me – because that’s exactly what I want to do. # But still, you can’t reach anybody. Does it sometimes hurt you that out there, there are some people who really want to get in touch with you, and just can’t get to you and you can’t get to them? Bill: I don’t want to break anyone’s heart. And that is sometimes really difficult, yes. People look up to you, maybe admire you... and I will never really be able to meet them, even if I wanted to. And that takes a lot of energy.
Bill: I always feel safe when I’m with the guys...I was never scared.
# But do you have a message for everybody out there?
Tom: And believe me, sometimes it was scary. Sometimes, audiences would react really badly, even more so when we were still young.
Bill: We are looking forward to the tour and are looking forward to seeing everyone again, play in smaller venues. It’s going to be awesome!
Bill: They threw eggs at us! Tom: But it was always us four, sticking together. But of course, our fans helped as well. We needed them as well. Bill is really into fashion, but except for that, music has always been our priority.

BERLIN FASHION FILM FESTIVAL 2015 Now arriving in its fourth edition, the anticipation of the 2015 Berlin fashion Film Festival grows from the announcement of its official jury that includes prominent creative directors, producers, editors and directors.

Since its creation in 2012, the Berlin fashion Film Festival has not only served as a meeting ground for advertisers, filmmakers, and designers, but also to promote the emerging new genre of fashion film. With BfFF still in its youth, the festival prides itself in its ingenious location of Berlin and its ability to allow creatives of all sorts to network and discover new visual talent. Originally intended by Jan Thomas and Konstantin Iwanow as a one-off publication, The Hundert came to life in 2013 as an extension of Jan’s startup newspaper ‘Berlin Valley’. But after a well received first issue it quickly became the go-to magazine for anyone interested in Berlin’s vibrant and ever growing startup community. The Hundert’s fourth issue, entitled “Startup’s meet Fashion” feels like a match made in heaven, combining two of Berlin’s flourishing culture’s to create a new issue packed full of the top 100 young and burgeoning fashion labels to look out for, which was released to coincide with Berlin Fashion Week AW/15. We talked to publisher and chief editor Jan Thomas about The Hundert in general and the "Startups meet Fashion" issue.

On the occasion of the new single "Kuckuck" and the video premiere, it is not possible to avoid the spell of the singer coming from Poland. Grown up in Warsaw and Neukölln, inartistic and rather unmusical were the circumstances. This belongs to the past. The album appearing 24th April „Über das Grübeln„ clean and sit perfectly, as well as her look. The first single and the matching video are very accurate and constructed carefully meticulously. The publication "Kuckuck" examines the question whether the clothes serve as a wrap / hiding place, or she reflects the respective person. Balbinas clothes are tailored by hand and every outfit sits perfectly, as well as every sentence in her new album. With pleasure she describes herself as a story narrator, as a naive script writer, sensitive, powerful lyricist and always wannabe child. Only sentimentalism still proves no texts. Some esprit also belongs to it. All that she writes, tells, she herself is responsible. She places big value on it. With Four Music, her label, native country of pop stars like Max Herre and Fantastischen Vier, she has closed a contract which guarantees her
greatest possible artistic freedom. Music, video-creation and artwork firmly remain in her hand. In live appearances she is accompanied by Nicolas Rebscher (guitar, bass, piano), Tobias Rebscher (guitar) and Christian Vinne (percussion). From the 12th of May, Balbina is tour support at the Herbert Grönemayer Tour 2015.

Frankfurt Style Award went to Paris

60 young Designers from all over the world participated last year. Under the motto United Diversity, 450 fashion-conscious guests attended the gala at Fraport-Forum at Frankfurt Airport in autumn 2014. At the elaborately staged catwalk show, the creations of the finalists were shown. Highlight at the Award ceremony, 15 prices with a total value of more than 50.000 Euro. One of the prizes , the Young Investigator Award "UNITED DIVERSITY AWARD for Outstanding Talent 2014", won Melissa Schulz with her Design “Parasite Technology” . The talent of the FAHMODA – academy of fashion and design Hannover was glad about the price, an unforgettable fashion trip to the French fashion houses, accompanied by Dominique Deroche, prominent guest of honor from France at the last year's gala. Madame Deroche was 40 Years the right hand of Yves Saint Laurent and is now representation of the Foundation Pierre Bergé Yves Saint Laurent. -90-
Mid of February Melissa Schulz went to Paris not only for her trip to the fashion houses, but also to present her outfit together with a selection of 39 other creations from the Frankfurt final in 2014 in front of exhibitors and fair audience from all over the world in an impressive catwalk show at the Texworld & Apparel Sourcing. The Show was produced and choreographed by the French fashion designer Eymeric François who has already worked for Christian Lacroix and Thierry Mugler. While France was the Frankfurt Style Award partner last year, 2015 it's Italy and the motto is "PIONEERING DESTINY". Until mid of February students could apply for Frankfurt Style Award 2015. The response was really impressive. An increase of applications and an even higher number of participating countries from all across the world point out for an exciting event this year. Welcome young talents to Frankfurt Style Award 2015.
