LET'S TALK ABOUT GREEN Living a healthy and sustainable lifestyle has become easier over the past 5-10 years than it has ever been before. More and more consumers question where their products come from and under what circumstances they have been made. The industry of sustainability and ethically fair produced goods has been growing continuously. From the start it was important for SUPERIOR MAGAZINE to support sustainable fashion. That is why we have repeatedly reported on sustainable labels and fairs. From now on sustainability becomes a permanent place in our magazine. Every month our editors will report on themes around sustainability in their own column. In this issue Sarah Weyers, who already visited GRENNSHOEROOM and ETHICAL FASHION SHOW BERLIN for us during BERLIN FASHION WEEK presents two exciting labels. -68-

JAN 'N JUNE The German design duo “JAN ‘N JUNE” looks just like a very fashionable young label: sleek cuts, clean designs, fine fabrics. But there is more: after talking to the two designers Juliana Holtzheimer and Anna Katharina Bronowski from Hamburg at GREENSHOWROOM trade fair during BERLIN FASHION WEEK the impression of the label changed, because most pieces are made from recycled materials, such as polyamide and old plastic bottles.

AUGUST 2015
The fine feeling of the garments is only one aspect to the modern and feminine collection, which could easily keep up with a long existing high-end label. It is refreshing how their own sense of style and the love they have for their brand is visible in the designs. The individual and clean look of their dresses, blazers and shorts can be worn by women looking for a classic chic, as well as young women seeking an unusual, edgy look. Juliana Holtzheimer explains that the variety of the possible combinations of their new collections makes their styles available for a great spectrum of consumers, which is exactly where eco fashion in general should be growing to be. The two designers, who have majored in Fashion and Design Management at “AMD Akademie Mode und Design” in Hamburg, were facing the struggle of not finding clothes which met their needs: sustainable, fashionable and affordable. “We had a glass of wine or two and came up with the idea of starting our own label.”
-71-
DIGITAL
Starting at 33€ for a t-shirt, the brand is available at a medium price level in order to satisfy the needs of young people who are interested in eco-friendly fashion. The nineteen styles of the coming Spring/Summer 2016 season have evoked great response at the GREENSHOWROOM tradeshow so far. “Many pieces are available in different colors as well”, Holtzheimer explains while showing a classic black dress. “Some pieces are harder to sell online because the costumer can’t feel the touch of the garment. A classic black dress is always needed, but what makes our fashion special is the combination of edgy designs and high quality garments. The dress will sell better in a store, because you can touch it, feel how heavy and soft the fabric is and see right away how beautiful it flatters the body.” Ranging up to 180€ at the highest price supports their statement and decision to make ecologically friendly produced fashion affordable for any budget. And even though the question of the place of production might
-72-
sometimes be uncomfortable for labels that focus on only one part of sustainability, the two designers explain who actually makes their collection. A small sewing studio in Poland has been their ideal partner to produce from the start. Since the label uses recycled materials such as plastic bottles, which is often used for work out clothing, they needed a company with experience and expertise in handling that kind of fabric. The polish studio owns its own small work out clothing line and is therewith the perfect cooperation. The family owned studio near Breslau has the much-needed eye for the details to create the design ideas the two sketch and develop. The philosophy of the two very charming friends is to “make the world a tiny bit better – with a sustainable attitude and for sure with style”. And their excitement for their brand, their designs, the tradeshow and the great response is just assuring of how they are completely head over heels for their brand.

KIM LAYANI KIM LAYANI, a German interior design label, has been working on the idea of bringing natural aesthetics into a different form since 2012. Selling rugs that are up to 260cm x 160cm big, the Freiburg based company has their very own way of making each one not only one of a kind, but much more a piece of art.

Even aside GREENSHOWROOM and ETHICAL FASHION SHOW BERLIN, ecologically friendly and fair trade products could be found during BERLIN FASHION WEEK. Outside of Hall 8 of the PREMIUM trade fair the trend of a sustainable lifestyle is obviously portrayed, as the shiny silver “Veganz” food truck is placed on the trade-fair premise.
that in our carpets. We try to create pieces of art. Also, sustainability is an important factor to us: We take old carpets and then create something new.
We met Richard Kim and Philippe Layani at the PREMIUM fair.
The threads of old Anatolian carpets are different than from new ones, because the sheep were held differently and their wool was stronger and shinier. Having them graze in the sunny mountains had an effect on their fur, because they had a greater intake of vitamins, protean and minerals. Today, they are held differently which affects the wool. Quality is very important when choosing our garments.
# Where did the idea of starting your own interior label come from? While traveling through Anatolia we learned about the traditional craftsmanship and were fascinated by it right away. We wanted to combine it with modern design and knowing each other for 20 years made the decision to start this together easier. The natural beauty of the Black Forrest is one of our main inspirations and we try to portray
-75-
# Why don’t you create something sustainable with new materials?
DIGITAL
# What is the process of production like? For the collection we are displaying here at PREMIUM we take old carpets and refine them. The carpets are between 60 and 80 years old so we clean them and then bleach them in the sun with a mixture of yogurt and citrus. Depending on the wanted color outcome this can take between two weeks and two months. After that, they are cleaned again and then colored with plant pigments or food coloring. # What does sustainability mean to you? There is a lack of meaning to the word. There has to be a change in consumerism, because we need things we can either recycle or use for a long time. Since the fashion industry as well as the food industry has made so much progress in being more responsible in the last couple of years, the interior industry has to make a move as well. # Thank you for the interview.

KIM LAYANI has been very successful during the Spring/Summer 2016 trade show in Berlin. The next step is to introduce the costumers of BREUNINGER in D端sseldorf to their concept and to draw attention to the necessity of changing consumerism one step at a time. KIM LAYANI brings a new aesthetic and beauty to recycling and make a statement with their beautiful, sustainable products.

DISCLOSURE - House from the planet Pop A wave goes through the ranks of electronic music scene, since Disclosure has just announced the participating artists of their new album 'Carachal' that will be out on September 25th. We met the duo in advance to talk about their work on the longplayer and the Berlin music scene.

AUGUST 2015
Usually electronic DJ's and producers move in the spheres of house and techno and don't want to be associated with pop music. Not so Disclosure, consisting of Guy and Howard Lawrence, two brothers who were born and raised in suburban Surrey, South England, which is known for its picturesque scenery rather than a strong music scene. Nevertheless a plenty of musicians are living in the county, such as Ringo Starr, Brian Ferry, Eric Clapton and Phil Collins. Maybe that's the reason for the variety of musical influences the songs of Disclosure persist of. The break of genre conventions has become a hallmark of the duo – and in the end has also created a fresh perspective on electronic music. Disclosure's debut album 'Settle' topped the charts in 2013, won various accolades and refreshed the scene with its injection of pop and musicality. “It’s not just musicality,” they say. “It’s songwriting in its classic form, songs you can play on the piano.” This is also a massive part of their new album 'Carachal', that will be released on September 25th. What makes it even more exciting is the number of collaborators who appear on the album, among them Sam Smith, The Weeknd, Lorde, Miguel, Lion Babe, Kwabs, Gregory Porter as well as the newcomers Brendan Reilly and Jordan Rakei. “We wanted to write songs with loads of singers so there are no instrumentals. We wanted to hone our songwriting skills,” says Howard. “When you get the chance to work with amazing people you want to make the most of them.” In occasion of their new album we met Guy and Howard in Berlin for an interview. While enjoying the pleasant ambience of Michelberger Hotel we talked about the new album, its name giver and the music scenes of Surrey and Berlin.
-103-
# Hi, nice to meet you! Your video to 'Omen' featuring Sam Smith has been released today. How does it feel to be back on track with a new album and a new video? Guy: Good, it feels really nice. We have been waiting for a while and have been a little bit nervous and exited these days. At night I was lying in bed thinking “only 8 hours left...”. So we are really happy and Facebook and Twitter are already getting crazy. 'Omen' has just got number 6 in iTunes in the UK within two hours. It's climbing, that's smashing. # There are a lot of music journalists out there explaining your sound. But when it's up to you – how would you describe 'Caracal' and your music in general to people? Howard: In 'Caracal' there is such a variety of styles and speed. I don't think you can put a name on the whole album, but you can put names on each individual song. Some of them are house, some of them are R&B. Guy: It changed over time and we tried lots of different things. Our first album was pop in a way, but written as house music. I think in the end it's just electronic pop music. But there have been a lot of names in the past, a good one for instance was 'love step' (laughs). In 'Caracal' there's a lot of pop, since every song has a singer and a chorus in it. The production and house influence underneath is still the same, but with much more different tempo and singers.
DIGITAL
# Please tell us more about your new album 'Caracal'. What is the idea behind the cat-like carnivore? Howard: We chose it, because we had this plenty of different singers. We always write the songs together with the singers and they all have different styles and topics. There wasn't one theme running through the whole album, that's why you couldn't sum up everything. For this reason we were just looking for something that looks cool, which was the caracal – my favorite animal. It's funny, because a lot of people didn't know it and asked, if it was a real cat (laughs). Guy: People thought it was a magical mystery thing. But it's a real animal living in Asia and Africa, it can jump 10'' in the air. Additional it ties perfectly in the wildlife festivals we have going on.
UK at this time. Also Grime, it was amazing. People started to experiment with more melodies, sampling chords and jazz and giving a twist on it, such as James Blake or Mount Kimbie. We thought that we should try something like that, but we always wanted to write a real song over it. That is how the pop influence came back. I think we were always supposed to write full songs and not just instrumental, clubby music.
# What's your favorite song on the album? Howard: That's difficult. I guess today it's 'Omen' (laughs). Guy: Haha, definitely. 'Omen' is quite up. I really like 'Moving Mountains' featuring Brendan Reilly. For me doing more on the production side it's probably one of the craziest things I have ever programmed. That was pretty fun for me. # How did you get interested in electronic music ? Was there a proper music scene in your hometown Surrey? Howard: Not in Surrey. It was in a town nearby, at the time when Dubstep came out. We heard about Dubstep really early in 2007, before it got big. Back then we think it was its best, its purest form, before it became this aggressive kind of music. Guy: We got into it, because we were looking for something fresh and new. Dubstep was the most forward thinking thing in the -104-

# Where did you get your skills in electronic music? Guy: I was playing drums since I was three, Howard played bass since he was six and played piano and guitar as well. Playing was always the main thing. Since our parents have been musicians, growing up was actually always being the best player we ever could. Howard: I think the best way to learn how to write songs is actually learning how to play different songs. Guy: Yeah. Learning to produce electronic music was just practising pretty much. We had 'music technology' at college, there we learned the basics. And I think we're still learning, which is the fun of it.
-105-
# Where did you have your first gigs? Guy: The first DJ set was in London at 'The Lock Tavern' in Camden. It was pretty rubbish, because we just played songs without mixing. Then the first live show was at 'The Old Blue Last' in Shoreditch. We played five of our own songs and afterwards the crowd screamed 'We want more!' and we were like 'We don't have anymore.' Good show, though! # What do you think about Berlin as a centre of music? Do you have favorite artists from here? Guy: It's mainly electronic and techno music coming from the city. Berlin is really known for that and there's a fair amount of labels and artists. We released an EP on the label Greco-Roman which is half based in
DIGITAL
Berlin, half based in the UK. And we follow the labels and DJ's of Berghain closely, you get to know pretty much what's going on. The production of our songs is highly influenced by that, even though we're more from the 'pop world'. My favorite DJ who regularly plays Berghain and Robert Johnson is probably Gerd Janson. Joy Orbison and Scoop are really good as well. # Which is your favorite song at the moment? Guy: The Weeknd with 'I Can't Feel My Face'. Howard: I like a song called 'Gold Mine' by Take 6 (both laugh). Guy: The difference between the two songs is huge! -106-
# Last but not least: You guys went through numerous interviews in your life till now. Is there something you would like to talk about, but nobody asked you so far? Howard: I don't mind talking about that I'm a big Mario Cart player. Guy: (Nods.) He plays Mario Cart. And he has got a dog called Jess. Howard shows a picture of his dog on his smartphone. Howard: Yeah, it's a dog. Guy: I don't have a dog... This is a good interview! Howard: This would be a good interview question: 'Which one of you has a dog?' (Both laugh.) # Well done! Thank you, guys.
