PANTA RHEI

T

his month of September does not only mean a new monthly Superior Magazine issue, as it usually does, but it also marks Superior’s fifth anniversary. To celebrate and as a next step, we introduce our new App magazine. 5 years ago, Superior, founded by Tom and Marc, started off as a multi-channel and multi-media magazine, combining print, mobile, digital and online, which was emphasized with our very first issue’s theme based on Aristotle quote “The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.” Superior is made of various platforms that work on their own, but better combined together. A reflection of our world: together we grow stronger. And this first theme has in fact been the basis of all of our projects, which takes us now here. A new product whose nature itself resides on multi-media. A lot has happened in 5 years. You, our readers, keep on increasing every day. Our team has changed and grown over the course of life events and allowed us to meet interesting people from all over the world. Our minds have evolved along with the cultures and countries we have visited, which influenced us into adding Superior City to our range of product. Not only a fashion publication anymore, Superior is now a reflection of worldwide cultures, their similarities and differences when it comes to art, music, fashion, lifestyle, food, travel and business. Such an expansion in fact came naturally from a world that inspires us everywhere. Hence, the theme to present all these exciting news is “Panta Rhei”. Heraclitus’ famous notion that

“All entities move and nothing remains still”. Change is so much anchored in our lives that we sometimes forget to reflect on it. This is why, looking back at these 5 years, we want to embrace our past to build a stronger future. Panta Rhei symbolizes the beginning of a new period for us, but it resonates with so many other people, who we chose to share with you with this new issue. Carolin Dunkel had a panta rhei of her own when, drawing on her life experiences, she decided to open her store, April First, and established a new beginning not only in her life, but for Berlin’s style as well. Rev House’ founders started their business and inaugurated a brand new way of living, based on their philosophy of independence and adventure. They inspired us into putting together a fashion editorial, “I’m the boss – Why the hell not?”, where the feeling of freedom would literally interpret the panta rhei as our models from Inselberg would float away on their own river. This leads us to our last story, with the exclusive interview of Inselberg founders, who explained their industry revolution with an innovative way of booking models. While keeping our strengths that are Superior monthly digital issues and fashion editorials from all over the world, we decide to present you with new perspective on the globalization we are part of. First, we start with a mobile Superior based on our three home towns: London, Berlin and Frankfurt. With an aim to keep on increasing the number of cities, our team is in constant search for inspirations from all corners of the globe.

Enjoy our PANTA RHEI issue … Your Superior team

On April first, Carolin Dunkel opened her very own shop, suitably called April First. With many interesting women’s wear brands, which she was the first to introduce in Germany, she carefully selected every item to offer a personal experience, reflecting her own likes and styles. From pieces of clothing and accessories to interior design furniture, Carolin created a concept store where everything is for sale, and follows a bohème chic lifestyle. A style that is quite in trend at the moment, and reflected by many renowned bloggers, who she in fact collaborates with. Check out her Instagram account, @aprilfirststore, to find bloggers and models such as Juliane Darc and Alexa Von Heyden styled by Carolin, all in April First clothing. As she described when Nerys and Tom from Superior Magazine met her, “in the end it’s me, it’s my vision,” explaining so well how this is not only another impersonal store, but a unique destination where women from all over the world would feel at home. With many exclusive surprises to find there, April First will surely define itself as a go to location for on trend and on point shopping. The luxurious Rev House boats are anything but normal houseboats and were the perfect location for a fashion shooting. INSELBERG Model-booking for the 21st century Interview ■ Tom Felber, Nerys d’Esclercs Photos ■ INSELBERG, Kendra Storm Rae

In times when the Internet and digital space surround our daily lives, it’s hard to think of industries that were not digitized. One that seems to have been left out is that of modelling agencies. Between phone calls and PDF files, model agencies are of course online, but lack in technical developments. The bright founders of Inselberg decided to revolutionize this and offer an innovative way of booking models. Falko Kremp, Matias Enghild and Niko Andréewitch took Tom and Nerys from Superior Magazine through their brand new platform, its concept, how it works and how models and creatives will benefit from it. Their concept? One unique platform where photographers, casting directors and other creative professionals can find the model that would suit their concept best. Using tools such as facial recognition, one click could take their clients to the right model, and hence save some precious time. On the other hand, aimed at experienced models, this system gives the opportunity to models to become their own booker. “Young people are just hyper independent right now,” explained Matias. “They understand new media, they know how to become a brand.” Easy and efficient, INSELBERG benefits both models and clients and allows them to work with quality-controlled peers. The platform was officially launched in May 2016, and has thus already begun its revolution. Read the interview with the Inselberg founders and view the fashion editorial we shot with Inselberg models in our Superior Magazine App.

HARALD HERMANN Visiting the artist in his studio

Harald Hermann’s paintings are like dreams. Dreams or a window to another world. The auto-didactic artist creates his spherical paintings by breaking down photographs he took on journeys, layering abstract and realistic coats of paint and taking his time. Inspired by architecture and religion and the diversity of cultures his paintings mirror landscapes, architecture, objects or human gatherings. But Hermann overcomes the profanity of these sceneries and merges them into a magical swirl of time and space. Studying communication and graphic design he already knew since his teenage years, that he is not one for an ordinary job and got into painting more and more. “Berliner” by choice since 15 years, Harald Hermann was born in Stuttgart originally, but appreciates the vivid art and gallery scene in the capital. By now he found his balance of free spirited work and likeminded people in Berlin. “Read the interview with Harald Hermann and view photos and a video in the BERLIN issue of our Superior Magazine App.”

O’DONNELL MOONSHINE Made in Berlin Interview ■ Barbara Green Photos ■ Harry Bowley

SEPTEMBER 2016

48

From pouring German, US-American and Irish spirit into a Mason Jar you will get O’Donnell Moonshine, which is exactly what August Ullrich and Philip Morsink did. Inspired by the time of prohibition from 1919 to 1933 and the smuggle of moonshine they first came out with their liquor / wheat brand in 2013. “Moonshine” was used as a code word for alcohol back in these days. This rather poetic name does not mirror the illicit distillation and the wars and gangs around it. But the spirit of American prohibition and the tough times of gangs paired with a pinch of golden twenties glamour makes the charming combination here. The name of gang leader and Irish descendant Spike O’Donnell and finest German distillation skills are the cherry on the pie, if you will. O’Donnell Moonshine is distilling only with natural ingredients creating four different flavours. The Original, the even stronger High Proof, a “Bratapfel” and a “Bitter Rose” flavour. Talking also about Berlin as a start-up city and their struggles as founders August and Philip revealed their insider tip: Celebrating your success once in a while – with O’Donnell Moonshine of course. Read more about the historic background and gangster stories around O’Donnell Moonshine in the Interview with the founders in the BERLIN issue of our Superior Magazine App.
