427 Stabu street 70 Riga LV-1009 Latvia fourtosevengallery@gmail.com www.fourtoseven.info

427 is an artist-run gallery in Riga established by artists Ieva Kraule and Kaspars Groševs in 2014. It is regularly open from 4–7pm two days a week. One can arrive at 70 Stabu Street inadvertently, for example following the trolley bus lines on a warm summer’s day, or losing one’s way around Avotu Street while looking for oversized trench coats or forgotten books. Most of the people here are unhurried, but the better the weather gets the more slowly and meanderingly they walk. The 427 gallery operates here, right here, at a place where the thoughts of many people in Riga very rarely enter and where the dark windows and cracked walls perfidiously portend to lower rental rates. The wide window with bright lights signals that there are exhibitions happening here every now and then.

The gallery was founded in July 2008 as an independent voluntary youth initiative and aims to create the first contemporary professional exhibition space for the visual arts in Ramallah. Securing open exhibition spaces for local and international artists, curators, and audiences; residency programmes, and the production of artworks. 2. Developing programmes and projects that target Palestinian artists and local audiences. 3. Hosting activities and events in cooperation with local and international institutes and individuals.

AllArtNow is considered to be the only independent collective contemporary art space in Syria. Founded in 2005, it aims to create greater opportunities for emerging Syrian artists and the development of the contemporary arts practice in Syria, and to create windows between Syria and the rest of the world. A neglected house in the old city of Damascus served as AllArtNow’s laboratory for art: it was a hub for emerging artistic practice and a collaborative meeting point for local and international artists. AllArtNow has participated in many international events and organised ‘Living Spaces’ an international contemporary art festival since 2009, ‘Studio1’ - an informal school for contemporary art, and ‘Boukhari House’ - an exchange/residency (postponed due to the unrest in Syria). In July 2012, AllArtNow closed its doors and its premises became home to Syrian refugee families. It now operates in different places in the world as a nomadic space.

‘Alma mater’ in Latin means nourishing mother. It also refers to where one graduated from university. ALMA MARTHA the collaborative project space (founded in Cape Town) is not your mother, and will not be contrived in stating the obvious that art and culture nourishes. In opposition to the term, it aims at being an action platform that challenges the rules of art academia, not through denying it but rebelling within the system and working towards making art work that accesses the everyday. ALMA MARTHA will be featuring works by Jamal Nxedlana and Chloe Hugo-Hamman. In addition we have asked friends of ALMA MARTHA to make us unique wearable art (t-shirts) to showcase. Friends include: Anthea Moys, Herman de Klerk, Black Koki, Liza Grobler, Chris van Eeden, Miranda Moss, Critical Mis and Buhlebezwe Siwani.

Detroit Stockholm Roslagsgatan 21 113 55 Stockholm Sweden

For Supermarket 2016 the Detroit Stockholm artists Joanne Grüne-Yanoff and Laura Tynan explore the concept of home. In Joanne Grüne-Yanoff’s ‘Instructions for Finding Home’ the artist creates an installation of works on paper and beeswax footprints which explore questions of transience, identity and home. Inspired by Gaston Bachelard’s 1958 book The Poetics of Space, Laura Tynan’s installation ‘Chamber’ uses origami and sea water to create a silent, contemplative space to explore the ideas of the ‘house as universe’ and ‘intimate immensity’.

www.idigalleri.org

ID:I is an artist-run space where contemporary exhibitions and events have thrived independently of the commercial art scene since 2002. The gallery has built its foundation on pushing expectations and “taking a stand to consciously allow for the ever-changing prerequisites vital for creating and exhibiting art”. From sound art installations to guerilla gardening performances, ID:I has been a platform for exploration, discussion and community partnership. Despite the fact that Sweden was in the midst of a recession when ID:I began the gallery has maintained a strong position through the financial support of its members and, most importantly, through their dedication and vision. These qualities of independence and determination have enabled ID:I to remain successfully untethered to the established Swedish art world’s hierarchies and expectations.

To work together effectively as a society we need to trust, even to a stranger. That’s why we started Intimnoe mesto. Intimnoe mesto (rus. ‘intimate place’ and ‘intimate part’) is a place for attentive and careful collective use. Intimnoe mesto introduces crude works of art. We think that crude art is alluring. Sometimes it’s unbearable to come out with a new idea to your comrades, and at such moment you feel fragile. We value fragility and respect allurement. By ‘crude’ we mean ‘juicy’. And justify it as significant. Intimnoe mesto is a place for your exhibition and anything. This can be swapped for any help for previous or upcoming event, or sometimes for potatoes/buckwheat/nails.

Wars, human wrongs and the refugee situation are complex and often hard to comprehend from our safe haven in Scandinavia. Our hearts must thus be open and reach out to refugees and other people who are struggling. Kunstplass [10] is featuring Bente Sommerfeldt-Colberg, Mari Røysamb and international guests in the exhibition ‘Troubled Water’. ‘Time’ by Sommerfeldt-Colberg and ‘Submarine’ by Røysamb are multifaceted and monumental sculptures giving you a sense of unease and ambivalence. Through projection of current photos and videos, ‘Troubled Water’ will be a live witness and real-time reminder of the situation for refugees and life of people living in war zones. As Ai Weiwei himself says: “The border is not in Lesbos, it really [is] in our minds and in our hearts.”

Gallery Luda is artists, groups, archives – everything that reflects the high-strung and sensitive flesh of art. The strategic idea of the first Gallery Luda (2009–10) continues – we show that which it is not possible to see. A widening of reach, more international content – Kyrgyz, Uzbek, and French artists, just like us – all living a parallel life in their own known world. The rhythm of events is defined not by a planned timetable, but by living necessity – Gallery Luda now continues the pace of the Gallery Luda past. Local trends of deep stratification erupt on the surface like a burst pipe to the displeasure of local residents, a combination of an art organism covering everything with wires, canes, beads, a rash, a mutual repulsion, a mutual implementation and prying over the walls.

The MoTA – Museum of Transitory Art Impermanent Museum collection consists of works that are parts or residues of a process. ‘Transitory’ is understood in a wider sense: not only as temporary, but also as transitioning in space and time and as a unique geographical and historical position (between East and West).

The gallery does not have any specific artistic or ideological programme but tends to like artists with an attitude. It is best known for its satiric group shows where absurdity is mixed with social commentary. The solo shows are varied, from highbrow to subversive underground. Nationalgalleriet has got it all! Exciting fist fights, horror, politics, satire, sex (including nude scenes), magic, psychology, violence, slapstick, special effects, and yes, art. This year’s show is called ‘Va ere om?!’ What’s it about? God only knows for sure, but we will do our best to provoke... at least a smile.

New Media Society, Tehran /Va Space, Isfahan, Iran

Va , ‘Palas Number Zero’ , Year: 2016 ‘Palas’ ‫سالَپ‬ By Va ‘Palas’ is about Va’s experience of wandering around the city of Isfahan this past year. The title ‘Palas’ is a Persian word which describes a special type of textile made of cheap sturdy materials used by nomads to cover the ground when camping. ‘Palas’ characterises Va as an alternative spaceless art initiative that extends along the surface of the city. Moreover, ‘Palas’ explores Va’s failures in resisting to be part of the mainstream art scene and finding a common language with its local community.

Va organises workshops, talks and has an ongoing collaboration with Shared_Studios, USA, Va creates a portal for public communication between Isfahan and other countries. The Va residencies hosted national and international artists, critics and writers to engage with the local community. * The Persian word ‘va’ is similar to ‘and’ in English – a word that enables an infinite number of words, concepts, or thoughts to be joined together.

Flirting professionally. The art world lives on relationships. But how apparent are these relations, how reliable the connections? We know that those friendships are often the key to the system, however, those keys are seldom obvious. Social networks like Facebook and Instagram have certainly increased the use of the word ‘friend’ and ‘follower’ and put their former meanings in question. Three artists of the Berlin based project space Scotty Enterprises are going to invite three friends to explore these questions on the ground. The Exhibition Space Spanien19C is a non-profit artist administrated space in Aarhus. Established 1998 it holds between six and eight shows a year presenting both Danish and international artists. Due to its location and interior, Spanien19C gives an atmosphere which calls for experimental productions as well as being a catalyst for investigative and site specific art, performance, sound art and music. It is important for Spanien19C to work as an intermediary for experimental, site specific art, which cannot necessarily be reproduced, and to give this form of art a place to unfold itself. It is our goal to give artists possibilities to meet, discuss, and exchange thoughts and ideas across the borders of one’s particular profession or position and thereby contribute to a vivid and committed art milieu.

TEGEN2 Bjurholmsgatan 9B 116 38 Stockholm Sweden info@tegen2.se www.tegen2.se 52

TEGEN2 – a space for art and activism, reflection and confrontation – since 2006. Abrupt shifts in the political arena are shaking the compass for many and polarisation is growing – how is it affecting the arts in Sweden? Signs of growing anxiety and even censorship can be detected. And if we go to a place where polarisation is even more obvious then what can we expect? Those are some of the questions TEGEN2 addresses: Who is Israel’s counterpart to Anna Odell? What does a blasphemic cake look like in the Holy Land? Where taboos, sacred as religion, must not be touched. Is this art that will never ever be shown in any museum in the world? Art that refrains from ‘institutional whitewashing’, abstaining from the widespread rhetoric of postmodern ideas and theories. Art that is stark naked!

top palais is run by > top e.V. Association for the Promotion of Cultural Practice which has been operating in Berlin since June 2002. Our members are artists, researchers and activists, whose activities range from individual research to curating project space and international collaboration. Our infrastructure supports projects that pursue an interdisciplinary approach, support international exchange, or deal with non-commercial attitudes. This includes but is not limited to real space, webspace, channels of distribution and networking. We develop ideas that are current and urgent, often merging politics, economics and technologies. Beside other contexts we work in post-digital domains – art forms that address the humanisation of digital technologies through interplay between the digital, biological and cultural. We support collaborative projects that seek for a dialog and diversity in artistic forms and attitudes. In such a way we contribute to our society. Since October 2015 we have run top palais in cooperation with Schillerpalais.

Verkstad konsthall Kungsgatan 55 602 32 Norrköping Sweden verkstadkonst@gmail.com www.verkstadkonst.se 56

Displacements of the Visible Lena Bergendahl (1982, Sweden) investigates visual meetings between space and moving image. She has searched for the story of the Italian nature and optics researcher Giambattista Della Porta (1535–1615) in Naples and other places to collect video material, which relates to his theories and depicts places where he worked. The city has been altered, rebuilt and displays layers of both past and present. Today optics and image reproduction are means to experiment with the concept of time, fantasise about the past, and preserve the present. While Della Porta’s experiments offered reproduction in real time for example with camera obscura, Bergendahl’s art brings together multiple time dimensions, both literally and figuratively, and combines early optical elements with new digital techniques.

We are VSVSVS, a seven-person collective and artist-run center based in a warehouse in Toronto, Canada. Formed in 2010, our activities encompass collective art making, a residency program, an exhibition space, individual studio practices and collective, collaborative production. For Supermarket 2016 we will be here to help. We know what it’s like out there under the bright lights, shoes pattering against the carpeted floor, people everywhere. We are acutely aware of the imperfection of being alive. Although many pains, ailments and discomforts are sadly impossible to remedy, VSVSVS would like to make what we can better. Let us try to help. There will be a sign up sheet but drop-ins are always welcome.
