SUPERMARKET – Stockholm Independent Art Fair is an annual artist-run art fair for artist-run galleries. The aim is to provide a showcase for artists’ initiatives from all over the world and to create opportunities for networking in the Swedish and international art scenes. Supermarket offers the visitor an exhibition with unexpected meetings and experiences rather than focusing on sales. In recent years, Supermarket has chosen not to increase the number of participating galleries, but instead focus on other aspects of the programme, emphasising the non-commercial aspects of this art fair. Supermarket 2015 presents 64 artist-run initiatives from 29 countries. We cast this year’s theme of representation and invisibility upon the art world, with a gender and norm-critical perspective. This year the Talks seminar programme and Supermarkt magazine examine ‘Invisibility – who represents who?’. The theme permeates Supermarket Talks in which we investigate which artists are educated, which artists are selected and where the interpretative prerogative lies. SUPERMARKET TALKS TALKS started in 2007 as an open space for talks, presentations, performances and debate on contemporary art. TALKS has over the years developed into a 3-day seminar on issues relating to the visual arts in general. The themes have been ‘Art of the Future’ (2009), ‘Documentation/Non-documentation’ (2010), ‘The Absent Hub’ (2011),‘The Waiting Room of Eternity’ (2012), ‘Happiness’ (2013), and ‘Difference(s)’ (2014). This year’s Supermarket TALKS includes lectures and panel discussions surrounding the concept of ‘Invisibility – who represents who?’.
RED SPOT PERFORMANCE Performance art has been part of the fair since beginning, increasing year by year. Live Action Göteborg, Lokal_30, Warsaw, No Budget Performance, Stoff – Stockholm Fringe Fest and PAiN – Performance Art in Norrbotten and Fylkingen have been important contributors to the programme. In 2012 a separate stage for performance art was created. This year’s RED SPOT will take place both in Svarta Huset and Konstfack.
SUPERMARKET MEETINGS Since 2010 Supermarket has arranged MEETINGS, a programme which allows participating artists and artists working as exhibition organisers, project managers and other professionals to meet and discuss various issues surrounding their gallery and the wider art world. The focus is to provide an opportunity to exchange ideas, compare experience and discuss issues related to self-organised projects.
SUPERMARKET ART MAGAZINE Since the first Supermarket, in 2007, an exhibition catalogue has been produced. In 2011 ‘Supermarket – artist-run art magazine’ was born, with submissions from our network around the world, always connected to the theme of the TALKS programme.

PERFORMANCE 16.00 Exit Kirsty Kross ‘Coral Trout Marathon, Stockholm’ Brought to Supermarket 2015 by the pink exhibition space PINK CUBE, Oslo, Kirsty Kross will present the performance marathon ‘Coral Trout Marathon, Stockholm’ in and around PINK CUBE’s booth and once a day at the Red Spot Exit stage, wearing fishnet stockings and high heels as part of her Coral Trout costume – this is a fish from her home country Australia. Duration: 5 min PERFORMANCE 18.00 Exit Josefina Posch & Minna Elif Wendin ‘Sensations of Phrases – Glidings’ A sculptural movement piece by sculptor Josefina Posch and movement artist Minna Elif Wendin performed with dancer Jan Rådvik and a projection by film maker Kim Ekberg. The piece explores how meetings with an audience change depending on the context in which the work is shown. Glidings was developed in symbiosis through Wendin’s and Posch’s tactile non textbased research methods within their respective fields where the actual making had a central focus as a working method. The piece presented at Supermarket 2015 is supported by the City of Stockholm and The Swedish Arts Grants Committee. Duration: 22 min PERFORMANCE 19.00 Svarta havet Arvid van det Rijt & Britt Kootstra ‘Northern Lights’ Flying birds show themselves but are barely recognisable as we arrive in the dusk. Artificial lights pop up in a dreamlike landscape of light and darkness. From the pulsating film loops, colours start to emerge out of the black and white images. The result is as hypnotising as the Northern Lights can be. As the last colours disappear, the lights fade away into the darkness again. Northern Lights is a live cinema performance, using 5 projectors and hand-processed and handmade 16 mm film loops. Duration: 45 min

PERFORMANCE 17.00 Exit Heidi Edström [ingentinget] ‘Cumbersome Dough’ Stay upright, stay straight and pull yourself together. Hold it tight, hold it close and hold it together in your arms while it is rising. Tremble as it clings to you, sticking to your arms and to your clothes, weighing you down towards the floor. It is a cumbersome dough in a slow durational performance where people pass by like time as the fermentation process proceeds, and a barely maintained facade of strength decomposes. Duration: 120 min
17.00 Svarta Havet Hur ska konstnären representeras i framtiden, genom upphovsrätt eller gratiskultur? Ett seminarium om användning av konstverk på internet. Kommer internet endast att vara ett skyltfönster för konstnären eller är det också en inkomstkälla? Är det gratiskultur som gäller eller har upphovspersonen rätt till ersättning? Frågan är högaktuell. Licenssystemet Creative Commons, CC, som innebär att upphovspersoner i olika grader frånsäger sig sin upphovsrätt och därmed ersättningsrätt, är på stark frammarsch. Myndigheter och offentliga institutioner använder i ökad utsträckning CC-licenser och sätter villkor som innebär att upphovspersoner som anlitas som fotografer, illustratörer eller konstnärer pressas till att acceptera CC-licenser för sina bilder. På seminariet går vi igenom vad CC-licenser är och ställer frågor kring hur de används. BUS modell för licensiering av konstverk hos kommuner, museer och andra med konstsamlingar presenteras. Friday 17 April 18.30 Mandelgren PERFORMANCE MSL and Antti-Juhani Manninen & Jouni Järvenpää – ‘Rhinoceros’ MSL is Antti Jussila and Jari Kallio. The performance duo is based in Turku and works with performance, video and sound. ‘We strive to aesthetic’. The Rhinoceros project is a series of performative live events. It is created and performed by live sound artist Antti-Juhani Manninen and choreographer Jouni Järvenpää. Lately they have been really into hamburgers. Duration: 90 min
Saturday 18 April 13.00 Svarta havet Visions and visibility Challenges for the artist-run scene in Tanzania Nafasi Art Space in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, present their background and current work and discuss with historian Mikela Lundahl power structures within the art world: East African and gender identity politics, western hegenomy and hierarchy, international influence and post-colonial context. Who is (not) represented and (how) is it possible to change? Participants: Rehema Chachage, artist and Artistic Manager of Programs at Nafasi Art Space; Diana Kamara, artist and poet, Dar es Salaam; Mikela Lundahl, PhD in History of Ideas with research in Critical Heritage Studies, Gothenburg/Copenhagen. Duration: 90 min PERFORMANCE 13.00 Mandelgren Opera Factory Sessions ‘Hot’ – a Swedish Circus on Merciful Inferno A mini-opera which includes electronic music, performance, poetry, spoken and visual elements, all based on a Swedish text. The framework for this multi-disciplinary collaboration is John Cage’s musical score ‘Circus On’. John Cage’s score consists of instructions about how to translate any piece of literature into a musical work. This instance of ‘Circus On’ has its literary starting point in August Strindberg’s ‘Inferno’ together with Ikea’s instructions for the ‘Barmhärtig’ stove. The project is a collaboration between members of Fylkingen and Detroit Stockholm, an artist-run gallery and studio collective. Duration: 25 min

14.00 Mandelgren Cultural Exchange Rate The value of cultural exchange in an imbalanced art world Independent art platforms and residencies with a focus on cultural exchange aim to benefit the reciprocity between native and non-native, while trying to remain inclusive. Yet, good intentions aside, there is often still a situation of disproportionate representation, as seen throughout the international art world. This discussion is about how the balance remains skewed between the open attitude towards cultural exchange and the difficulties of living up to this openness given the existing inequalities in international participation. Introduction: Jeroen van der Hulst, Editor-in-Chief at Pamphlet Magazine (NL). Participants: Abir Boukhari, founder of AllArtNow, Damascus (SY); Nia Pushkarova, founder of Watertower Arts Fest, Sofia (BG); Signe Vad, founder of Udstillingsstedet TYS, Copenhagen (DK). Duration: 90 min 15.30 Svarta havet Bassam El Baroni Art and Abstraction from Pre-Crisis to Post-Crisis Globalisation Globalisation – namely what the Iranian sociologist Masoud Alamuti defines as the ‘qualitative shift in the logic of global ordering of human societies from the centrality of the struggle for political power to a competition for economic interests’ – has placed exchange and the abstraction that comes with it at the centre of current debates on art. With an emphasis on curatorial practice, the talk attempts to trace the gradual ascendance of abstraction as a persistent and crucial question that the expanded field of art must engage with intellectually and aesthetically in ever more sophisticated ways. Bassam El Baroni is a curator, teacher, and writer based in Alexandria, Egypt. Duration: 90 min
Saturday 18 April 15.00 Exit PERFORMANCE Ulises Pistolo Eliza – ‘The Oracle’ The idea is to take a deck of cards and give them out to people, then get the people to write their wishes on the cards. Once this is done, people exchange cards for a while so in the end everybody is left with a card with someone else’s wishes on it. And this is what they get to take home and keep. In the end, the performance results in a shifting of ‘wishes’, a simple and amusing way to understand others’ fears and desires. 17.00 Svarta havet Art in the margins A discussion on migration and immigration How can artistic projects represent the unrepresented and illuminate the experiences of excluded communities? The artist-run space PASAJ works in the Tarlabaṣı neighbourhood, a historic area in the centre of Istanbul that has always been a home for minorities suffering from discrimination by Turkish authorities and the wider society. The artist-run space MIZA presents artists who discuss the experiences of Albanian immigrants in their new countries of residence. Participants: Secil Yayali (PASAJ, Istanbul); Olson Lamaj (MIZA, Tirana); Moderator: Erik Berggren (Museum of Forgetting) In collaboration with AIM Network, supported by Nordic Culture Point Duration: 90 min PERFORMANCE 17.00 Exit Maid In Sweden – ‘Ironing Maids no2’ A performance triptych by Maid In Sweden; Helena Burman, Christina Göthesson and Susanne Torstensson. By looking back into history and beyond the future the artists Burman, Göhesson and Torstensson allow themselves to play with aphorisms around household chores. They examine from a personal point of view their own history from the maternal perspective. Duration: 20 min

Saturday 18 April 18.00 Exit PERFORMANCE GRAFOROTIKA Graforotika is a printmaking duo on skates: Hannah Harkes smoothes on the ink and Mari Prekup applies the pressure, both wearing skates modified to fulfill the function of a printmaking workshop. Accompanied by musicians and cheerleaders, they live-print traditional printmaking plates whilst providing a choreographically spectacular, albeit kinetically clumsy, feast for the eyes – in matching outfits. Graforotika rolled in from GRAFODROOM, a printmaking workshop and studio collective in Tallinn. Duration: 15 min PERFORMANCE 19.00 Svarta havet Arash Moori ‘Parasitic Noise’ Parasitic Noise is a performance based on the induction of crosstalk, noise, and interference between numerous audiovisual systems. The term itself refers to undesired oscillations which occur in electronic equipment. Within a live context these artefacts are amplified and exploited in order to create a synesthetic cacophony of sound and light. Arash Moori (b.1977, Birmingham, England) is a multidisciplinary artist whose experimentation with light, sound and electricity forms the foundation of his individual and collaborative work. Duration: 35 min PERFORMANCE 19.00 Mandelgren Theatre Companie Achimowicz ‘SISTARS’ ‘SISTARS’ by Theatre Companie Achimowicz is Anna Achimowicz and Natalia Zdunska, who refer to Siamese twins and the living image of the body of the dancer. It is a performance which realises a long-standing vision of the merger of contemporary dance, fashion, architecture and anatomy. The choreographer experiments during the stage event, where reality is distorted and a newly interpreted idea of architecture and the geometry of the human body is presented through movement, sound, and costumes. Endast institutionernas utställningar syns i de stora tidningarna ofta skriven utifrån ett vitt akademiskt perspektiv. Nya plattformar bildas för att analysera och debattera kultur och här kan blicken vara klassmedveten, avkoloniserad och feministisk. Men räcker dessa ideella initiativ för en framtida publik? Ett panelsamtal om integration och representation Kan konstnärliga projekt verka för att motverka strukturell segregering, bristande representation och snäva urvals mekanismer? Konsten att delta är ett projekt vars syfte är att skapa möten mellan regionalt verksamma, svenskfödda konstnärer och utlandsfödda, ofta nyanlända kulturarbetare. Vem är osynlig, vem behöver representeras eller integreras och när blir strävan efter mångfald ett slags exotifiering? När riskerar representation att användas som ett politiskt alibi? Vad innebär direktiven om jämställdhet för myndigheter som Kulturrådet i praktiken? Räcker det att synliggöra exkluderande maktstrukturer för att bryta dem?
