SYNOPSIS OF THE FIRST THREE EPISODES

SYNOPSIS

IN LESS THAN A DECADE, MILLIONS OF BRAZILIANS GAINED ACCESS TO THE CONSUMER MARKET AND PARTICIPATION IN THE COUNTRY’S SOCIAL LIFE. THEY ARE THE NEW BRAZILIAN MIDDLE CLASS THAT IS CHANGING THE FACE OF THE NATION. WHO ARE THESE BRAZILIANS? WHAT DO THEY WANT? WHAT ARE THEIR EXPECTATIONS? THE DOCUMENTARY SERIES REVEALS THE DAILY LIVES OF THESE PEOPLE: FROM ITS MORE MUNDANE HABITS TO THEIR THOUGHTS ABOUT EDUCATION, CULTURE AND POLITICS.

THE PROJECT IN LESS THAN A DECADE, MORE THAN 30 MILLION BRAZILIANS ASCENDED TO THE MIDDLE CLASS, WHICH NOW COMPRISES 100 MILLION PEOPLE OR 50% OF THE POPULATION. ACCORDING TO A FAMOUS BRAZILIAN SURVEY, “IF THIS CLASS WERE A COUNTRY, IT WOULD BE THE 12TH IN POPULATION, WITH MORE INHABITANTS THAN GERMANY, EGYPT AND FRANCE, AND THE 18TH CONSUMPTION MARKET.” The documentary series Show Yourselves — consisting of six episodes of about 50 minutes each — explores the changing socio-economic Brazilian profile resulting from the emergence of a new middle class and the consequences of its presence in the political, economic and cultural scenarios. This emerging class is the great socio-economic novelty in Brazil, although very little is known about it - its history, desires, tastes. To show and discuss this phenomenon is key to understand the possibilities and the trends and courses that the country will take. Show Yourselves is an audiovisual contribution to understand, without prejudice or preconceptions, what the new middle class thinks and how it acts as well as to explore the impact and changes resulting from its new and arising position in society.

1ST EPISODE: What does the new Brazilian middle class look like? By following the daily lives of four members of the new middle class, the routine of these Brazilians will be unveiled from breakfast and work to the time they get back home. Experts will also reveal why it is so important to know the habits and desires of this class to understand where Brazil is heading to. 2ND EPISODE: The new Brazilian middle class and its consumer patterns are the subject of the second episode. A brief economic analysis of the factors that led to the incorporation of this class to the consumer market will be followed by the observation of households and interviews with members of these families. Four people from this middle class will reveal what attracts them at shopping malls and supermarkets. Business owners and advertisers will speak of their marketing strategies and how they had to adapt themselves to keep up with this new class and maintain their market share. 3RD EPISODE: Young people will help to reveal cultural expressions of the new middle class. What do they do in their leisure time and their weekend meetings? What they hear, see or read? What are their wished travel destinations? How do they have fun? The episode will show constrasts between the tastes of the new middle class and that of the more traditional one. Reactions to cultural preferences will be explored.
