seeing um telling essay i
i
was
in,
i
believe
think,
um
i
had
a
friend
named
ross
was
like
the
most
irritating human
being
on
the
planet,
had
no
self-
control
um
and
he
never
knew
when
to
stop,
where
it
was
funny
to
the
point
where
it
was
genuinely irritating and
he
the
point
and
fourth
ross
but
i
and
antisocial and
he
was,
he
was
the
best
thing
i
had
uh
both,
both
my
parents
worked
so
um
had
to,
had
to
stay
after
school
everyday
called
adventure club
and
played
from
not
board
hurting
incredibly shy
was
mercer
and
i
was
it
i
grade,
mercer
i
no
so
ross
mercer
at
this
thing
adventure club
took
place
in
the
cafeteria
basically
tried
to
keep
us
preoccupied and
our
parents
um
he
always
did
everything past
was
in,
i
believe
it
was
fourth
grade,
i
had
a
friend
named
ross
mercer
and
ross
mercer
sucked
he
was
like
the
most
irritating human
being
on
the
planet,
he
had
no
self-
control
um
he
never
knew
when
and
he
would
the
point
where
it
funny
to
but
i
was
incredibly shy
and
antisocial and
of
the
kids
had
stay-
at-
home
and
was
we
my
all
friend
just
sat
came
and
picked
us
up
moms
where
i
was
living
so
their
moms
would
come
and
hours
until
my
dad
would
get
off
work
and
uh
but
i
had
to
wait
an
additional two
so
that
was
what
ross
also
in
pick
them
he
was,
he
was
best
thing
um
sorry,
i
lost
my
train
of
thought
um
we
just
um
we
would
always
draw
pictures,
we
only,
we
only
would
did
a
few
in
the
summer
we
would
we
would
go
out
and
we
we
would
we
would
take
yellow
plastic
bats
and
try
to
kill
yellow-
jackets
around
a
trashcan, this
is
how
bored
we
were
and
then
if
we
weren’t
doing
that
i
zucchni
cookie
and
uh
he
said
drawing
pictures,
had
a
he
had
some
other
characters, one
time
he
got
at
me
for
trying,
trying
to
for
using
one
of
his
characters but
he
didn’t
want
to
draw
it
anymore,
and
i
thought
it
was
he
got
really
mad
at
me
about
this
and
uh
we
were
and
a
character named
mad
was
because
pretty
sweet
character so
i
my
parents
worked
so
had
to
stay
after
school
everyday
this
thing
and
adventure club
took
place
in
the
cafeteria ToTal
and
and
played
board
games,
basically
they
tried
to
keep
us
preoccupied and
from
not
hurting
ourselves until
our
parents
um
finally
started
drawing
it
and
we
both
went
to
the
bathroom
the
bathroom was
kind
of
far
off
it
was
down
the
hallway
and
um
guess
whenever in
the
bathroom you
know,
he
finished
peeing
and
doing
his
bussiness
earlier
than
me
and
he
um
thought
it
be
really
funny
to
stand
in
front
of
the
door
with
home
moms
had
stay-
at-
i
had
to
wait
an
additional two
that
was
what
ross
also
in
um
uh
sorry,
just
um
where
i
hours
until
uh
um
adventure club
and
uh
and
um
would
like
this
so
i
couldn’t
out
get
of
the
and
door
he
just
thought
this
was
light
on
and
off
really
fast,
uh
i
was
super
freaked
out
you
know
i
was
like
a
he
had
to
take
everything way
he
would
kept
turning
lights
so
a
very
like
intense
like
strobe-
light
effect
and
timid
kid
this
sort
of
thing
really
freaked
me
out
and
of
course
was
so
what
he
was
also
turning
on
all
the
uh
was
the
bathroom, so
it
on
and
since
it
he
had
where
it
was
annoying
but
even
farther
than
that,
and
he
just
at
the
point
of
tears
here
‘cause
this
kid
was
completely balistic
totally
freaking
too
far
past
the
point
stop,
so
i
was
nearly
was
all
this
ross
happening, and
sound
to
and
we
around
a
trashcan, this
we
weren’t
doing
cookie
and
uh
me
didn’t
got
uh
and
the
i
guess
lights
were
take
everything
going
bathroom and
turning
on
the
hairdryers,but
he
had
every
minutes
off
on
‘cause
timer,
a
he
would
have
my
only
run
to
way
and
of
hit
escaping
was
waiting
hairdryers again
the
for
to
all
of
make
them
so
at
one
moment
he
uh
he
ran
to
hit
the
hairdryers and
that
was
my
escape,
so
i
grabbed
the
door
and
ran
out,
and
right
as
i
opened
the
door,
one
of
one
of
the
uh
people
who
ran
adventure club
was
there,
and
uh
they
had
seen
the
whole
thing,
and
i
got
in
trouble
for
it,
which
is
really
really
shitty
um
ross
um
also
got
in
trouble
too,
but
i
really
didn’t
feel
like
i
deserved
that,
and
i
uh
i
still
remember having
that
i
was
in
trouble
because
my
irritating friend
ross
locked
me
in
the
bathroom
and
turned
off
all
the
lights
and
flipped
on
all
the
hairdryers um,
anyways
i
don’t
think
i
will
ever
be
the
same
again
the
go
he
he
the
hairdryers would
go
i
explain
he
on
was
i
dad,
trapping
he
his
were
to
of
far
vs and
on
the

it wasthought never knew

he

so
i
would continue
couldn’t

really
he

he

[4] Um Evident
I
don’t think
I
will ever be the same again
first design strategy
It’s probably not a good idea to choose a thesis idea as complex as analyzing a language I didn’t grow up speaking or hearing. My native language is Thai, yet as a member of the global design community, I also must interact with English, an international language. I love listening to stories, and I am interested in analyzing the way people tell them. I asked some of my classmates to tell me stories about their childhoods. Faint memories came back as rich stories. I used a video camera to record the stories as people told them. I transcribed this spoken language into text. Then I created various systems to analyze the elements of storytelling. Finally, I designed posters to represent my analysis. I named my project “Seeing Um Telling” to represent my effort to translate talking into typography. The mysterious process of speech fascinates me. How do we transform our thoughts into spoken language? During speech, we think, talk, hesitate, pause, and say “um,” or “uh,” to buy time. Talking is an activity that relies on thinking in the moment. It’s part of our communication style and individual verbal habits. All these behaviors affect how each person narrates. After collecting ten stories, I choose three that I thought had potential for analysis. My friends’ stories and the way they narrated them portray their personalities. I started to create systems around the analysis. Starting with three stories gave me a chance to see how each system could apply to other stories. The process also allows comparisons among the stories. Chris’s story is long, confessional and had the most emotional contrast, while Beth and Ann’s stories are more direct, clear and focused. I chose to focus on Chris’s story, analyzing in twenty graphic ways.
[1} This system represents speech patterns. I broke down the story into sections that indicated 5-second intervals. I divided the words into a grid with equal spacing. The number of words in each line forms a bar graph that shows the speed of speech. It showed how fast or how slow Chris talks throughout each session. I also coded each word by color based on the part of speech. This pattern symbolizes the frequency of speed, tone, rhythm, and fillers. The pattern allows viewers to see the number of times Chris mentions one person and what kind of description he gives that person. Also, the intensities of each color show in what part of the story he uses more fillers and the frequency of negative and positive words. In the beginning of the story, Chris says, “Ross is the best thing I had.” A reader might interpret the tone of Chris’s statement as positive, but upon close inspection, the reader will see that Chris intended sarcasm. The readers can see the negative colors around one spot of positive colors. The outcome expresses emotion not only through choice of words but also through rhythm and pace during different parts of the story. The pattern allows the viewers to see the mood and tone in each part without reading through the whole story. [2] After exploring the parts of speech in objective ways, I became more interested in analyzing subjective aspects of the stories. I categorized emotions throughout the story. I was interested in how a computer algorithm would judge the emotions of the story. I filtered the story with a natural language processor, and it pointed out the positive and negative words. It’s fascinating to compare the nuances of human judgment to the computer filters. For instance, the computer program defined the word pretty as differently as a positive adjective. Yet Chris was using the word as a noncommittal adverb. Because of this,
the program categorized the word differently than I did. The program also picked out the word super as positive, but in this context, it is being used as an adjective in the phrase “super freaked out.” By contrast, the program fails to identify the phrases anti-social and no friend as negative while identifying friend and adventure as a positive word. My design represents human judgment with a thick line and the program’s judgment with thin. [3] The next poster applies an emotional filter to each part of the story. There are four main emotions: negative, contrary, neutral, and positive emotion. I used my own judgment to begin and later asked the story’s teller to verify. I used color to differentiate between certain stages of emotions. [4] Uncovered words indicated fillers such as um, uh, and, like, which contrasted with the emotion fillers. In general, the fillers mostly occurred in the beginning and middle parts of the story, rather than at the end. More important, the fillers are often used when the speaker is switching emotions. I made the fillers more evident in the preceding poster by blocking out other words and emphasizing the fillers.

when i was in , i believe it was fourth grade , i think , um when i was a kid , my dad was a crazy fisherman , he would go out all night a story from my childhood that sort of defines i had a friend named ross mercer and ross mercer sucked , and come home and sleep for an hour or two and then he would like a moment of realization for me was when , he was like the most irritating human being on the planet , get up and work all day um he had boats , he ran a charter boat , i remember i was really young and i was , that ’ s probably like six he had no self - control um and he was never knew when to stop , he always did everything past which we had a little business out of it and in order to or seven and i was in the car with my brother and sister in the point where it was funny to the point wher e it was genuinely irritating and and he would continue , have bait , he kept a bath tub in our side yard , um the back seat and my dad was driving but i was incredibly shy and antisocial and i had no friends , filled with eels and there was a wooden , and it was a really cloudy day and it was kind of cold and i just he was , he was the best thing i had so ross mercer was my friend a wooden top for it , there was almost always water didn ’ t like the weather outside and i was like looking at the window and i was like i wish everyday and uh both , both my parents worked so um running through the tub , and when i said that there were eels was a sunny day and i just said it ‘ cause you know i was like lalala i had to , had to stay after school everyday at this thing ToTal in the27 water in the tub , in the tub , i don ’ t mean that there were like five eels swimming and then my sister turns to me and she goes everyday is sunny, called adventure club and adventure club took place in the cafeteria and we all just sat around i mean it ’ s like a horror movie , like it ’ s filled with eels and they were all it ’ s just the clouds block the sun and i was like and played board games , basically they tried to keep us preoccupied and and I think I had a friend slithering around each other, really pretty nasty , right ? so um literally, my mind could not realize that , i was like um and picked and heus wasup , from not hurting ourselves until our parents no umself-control finally came i was always so curious , they were all black and um i ’ d never seen anything like them , and uh both, both my parents so oh my god , you mean , the sun is like always out and most of the kids had stay - at - home moms where i was living so their mom would come and pick them I had to, had to there is no other animal or fish that that ’ s like them and um it ’ s , it ’ s always just above the clouds like my my little mind um like worked so hard until our came and uh up but i had to wait an additional two hours until myparents dad would get finally off work i would go out and push the wooden board asideand and i ’ d peek uh in and so to like figure out what it meant and then i realized that and then i was like and so that was what ross was also in adventure and club um and sometimes i would stick my hand in and grab one and then i ’ d get more oh my god , everyday is sunny, that ’ s crazy and so , uh sorry I lost my train of thought and um brave , and i ’ d take an eel out and hold it , and then um that was , that was a moment that i really realized that like i didn ’ t quite understand uh sorry i lost my train of thought um we just um one time , i took one out and i dropped it and it was slithering around on the ground the world and that people could teach me like all things and these new uh he had some other we just um we would always draw pictures , we only, we only did a few activities , and i was scared , i don ’ t know what i was scared andof uh he got really mad and that that took me a while to understand but once when i knew i was like that ’ s really cool . in the summer we would we would go out and we would we would we would take yellow plastic uh but i couldn ’ t catch it , so there was a sledge hammer

second design strategy
third design strategy
A key part of my thesis exhibition in the graphic design in Master of Fine Art at MICA was the creation of motion graphics. The video served as an introduction to the posters that follow with the details. The type appears on the screen one word at a time, synchronized with the voice of the tellers. These videos allowed visitors to both see and hear the stories simultaneously without any distracting of images.
[4} The last piece of my poster design compared all three stories over time. Each line length indicates the number of words spoken in five seconds. It compares each 5 seconds of each story together. Chris Clark spoke both the fastest with 26 words in 5 seconds and the slowest with 2 words in 5 seconds. He spoke fast during the climax of the story, where he took action after having victimized from the beginning. The slowest part of his story was when he lost his train of thought in the story’s transition section. The poster shows how long, fast, and slow he talked, and how long he paused. Chris’s variable data makes him the most inconsistent in speech rate. Ann and Beth spoke the fastest at 20 words per 5 seconds. They have a more consistent rate of talking throughout their whole stories.
The words appear and disappear, symbolizing the spoken language’s transience as it passes from the speaker to the audience. In contrast with subtitles in a film or closed captions on TV, these motion graphics follow the spoken stories in real time. The screen appears blank, implying that the teller paused. Words that appear for a very short moment mean when the speaker talks very fast. These motion pieces were simply designed. They presented small black words on a white screen. This simplicity contrasts with the complexity of the color-codes posters. The bar graphs under the screens supplemented the motion pieces. They immediately showed information about different kinds of words that the tellers used in their stories. There were no numbers for each category but only the lengths for comparison.
There are also parts toward the end of the story where Chris got excited and enthusiastic. He spoke quickly. Here, he did not use a lot of fillers. All these conclusions are evident in his emotion, tone, mood, pace and rhythm. Words like um, uh and like occurred the most in Chris’s speech – 5 per every 100 words. Interestingly, Beth used only 1 filter word in every 100 words and Ann used less than 1 per every 300 words. However, Ann said like 8 times per every 100 words. When comparing these three people, Chris’s amount of filler words seems extremely high. In reality, the American adult English speaker uses 7 fillers per every 100 words [5], although, we hardly notice them. It is obvious that fillers affect the speed of speaking, but they are not necessarily influenced by emotions. This project is not intended to catch all the errors in spoken language. Rather, it is attempting to reveal how we communicate verbally. I created an objective and subjective dissection of spoken language. Even though I subjected three narratives to this analysis, the system can apply to any kind of storytelling, speech or interview.
It, metaphorically speaking, creates a blueprint that to parallel the story. It’s a system that is based a particular story, but it alternatively allows the reader to interpret the story on their own. Instead of seeing a story from one perspective in linear form, it gives readers another perspective on the stories. By looking at the system, you can better understand the tone, emotion and rhythms of the stories as well as observe the way people tell them. Above all, I am interested in seeing the visual patterns created when language is filtered through a typographic system. There’s an element of beauty and surprise that comes from the organic texture of speech and language meeting an abstract system. [5] Um. and always
um draw
uh pictures,
sorry we ,
ionly,
lost we
my only
train did
of a
thought few
um activities, we in
just the
um summer
we we
would would
always we
draw would
pictures , go
we out
only and ,
we we
only would
did we
a would
few we
activities , take in would
the yellow
summer plastic
we baseball
would bats
we and
would try
go to
out kill
and yellow
we jackets
would around
awe
would , this we trashcan
would is
take how
yellow bored
plastic we
baseball were
bats and
and then
try if
to we
kill weren’t
yellow doing -
jackets that
around we
awere
trashcan drawing , this pictures,
is and
ihow
bored had
we a
were and character named
then zucchni
if cookie
we and
weren’t uh
doing he
that had
we some
were other
drawing , one pictures, characters
and time
i he
had got
a really
character at named mad
zucchni me
cookie for
and , trying
uh trying
he to
had for
some using
other one
,one characters of his
time characters he but
got that
really was
mad because
at he
me said
for he
trying didn’t ,
trying want
to
for draw
using it
one and anymore, of
characters it but thought
that was
was a
because pretty
he sweet
said he characters so
ididn’t
want started
to drawing
draw it
it and
anymore, um
and he
i got
thought really
it mad
was at
a me
pretty about
sweet this
characters uh so and
i he
started uh
drawing we
it , both
and both
um went
he to
got the
really bathroom mad and
at the
me bathroom about was
this kind
and of
uh far
he off
uh it
we was
both down,
both the
went hallway
to and
the um
bathroom and i guess
the was whenever bathroom in the
kind bathroom of you
far know,
off he
it finished
was peeing
down and
the doing
hallway his
and bussiness
um earlier
i than
guess me
whenever he in and
the um
bathroom thought you he
know, it
he would
finished be
peeing really
and funny
doing to
his stand
bussiness in
earlier front
than of
me the
and door
he with
um his
he arms
thought relly
it wide
would like
be this
really so
funny i
to couldn’t
stand get
in out
front of
of the
the door
door and
with he
his just
arms thought
relly this
wide was
like hysterical this and
so he
iwould
couldn ’t flip
get the
out light
of on
the and
door off
and really
he , fast
just he
thought kept
this turning
was on
hysterical lights and the
he so
would it
flip was
athe
light very
on like
like i
ross we
his i
and intense
off like
really strobe-
, fast light
he effect
kept and
turning uh
on i
the was
lights super
so freaked
it out
cause ‘was
ayou
very know
intense was
like like
strobe a
light super
effect shy
and and
uh timid
i kid
was this
super sort
freaked of
out thing
‘cause really
you freaked
know me
i out
was and
like of
a course
super was
shy ross,
and so
timid he
kid had
this to
sort take
of thing everything way
really too
freaked far
me so
out what
and he
of was
course also
was turning
ross on ,
so all
he the
had uh
to all
take the
everything in way hairdryers
too the
far bathroom, so so
what it
he was
was all
also this
turning sound
on all , and happening
the lights
uh were
all going
the on
in hairdryers and off,
the and
, so bathroom i was
it totally
was freaking
all out,
this and
sound since
, and happening it was
lights ross
were he
going had
on to
and take
off , and everything not
ionly
was too
totally far
freaking past
out the,
and point
since where
it it
was was
ross annoying
he but
had even
to farther
take than
everything not that and ,
only he
too just
far would
past not
the , stop
farther of
just kid
would was
point so
iwhere
it was
was nearly
annoying the but at
even point
than tears
that, here
cause ‘and
he this
not stop, completely balistic
so and
iand
was trapping
nearly me
at in
the the
point bathroom of and
tears turning
here on
cause ‘the
this hairdryers,kid but
was he
completely balistic had every
and five
and minutes
trapping the
me hairdryers in would
the go
bathroom and off ‘cause
turning they
on were
the on
,but hairdryers a timer,
he so
had my
every only
five way
minutes of
the escaping
hairdryers waiting would was
go for
off all
they the
were on hairdryers to
a go
timer, off
‘socause
my he
only would
way have
of to
escaping run
was and
waiting hit
for the
all of hairdryers again
the to
hairdryers them to make
go go
off back
‘cause on
‘cause of
he so
would at
have one
to moment
run he
and uh
hit he
the ran
hairdryers hit again to
to the
make them hairdryers and
go that
back was
on my
so escape ,
at so
ione
moment grabbed
he the
uh door
he and
ran ran
to out,
hit and
the right
hairdryers and i as
that opened
was the
my door,
escape one ,
so of
ithe
grabbed um,
the one
door of
and the
ran uh
out , people
and who
right ran
i as adventure club
opened was
the , there
door, and
one uh
of they
the had
um, seen
one the
of whole
the , thing
uh and
ipeople
who got
ran in
adventure club trouble for
was it,
there which,
and is
uh really
they really
had shitty
seen um
the ross
whole um
thing, also
and got
i in
got trouble
in , too
trouble but
for i
it , really
which didn’t
is feel
really like
really i
shitty deserved
um , that
ross and
ium
also uh
got i
in still
trouble , remember too having
but to
i explain
really that
didn’t to
feel my
like, dad
ithat
deserved i
that was ,
and in
itrouble
uh because
imy
still having irritating remember friend ross
to locked
explain me
that in
to the
my bathroom
dad and,
that turned
i off
was all
in the
trouble lights
because and
my flipped
irritating friend on all
ross the
locked hairdryers me um,
in anyways
the i
bathroom don’t
and think
iturned
off will
all ever
the be
lights the
and same
flipped again
on
the
hairdryers um,
anyways
i
don’t
think

when i was in , i believe it was fourth grade , i think , um when i was a kid , my dad was a crazy fisherman , he would go out all night a story from my childhood that sort of defines i had a friend named ross mercer and ross mercer sucked , and come home and sleep for an hour or two and then he would like a moment of realization for me was when , he was like the most irritating human being on the planet , get up and work all day um he had boats , he ran a charter boat , i remember i was really young and i was , that ’ s probably like six he had no self - control um and he was never knew when to stop , he always did everything past which we had a little business out of it and in order to or seven and i was in the car with my brother and sister in the point where it was funny to the point wher e it was genuinely irritating and and he would continue , have bait , he kept a bath tub in our side yard , um the back seat and my dad was driving but i was incredibly shy and antisocial and i had no friends , filled with eels and there was a wooden , and it was a really cloudy day and it was kind of cold and i just he was , he was the best thing i had so ross mercer was my friend a wooden top for it , there was almost always water didn ’ t like the weather outside and i was like looking at the window and i was like i wish everyday and uh both , both my parents worked so um running through the tub , and when i said that there were eels was a sunny day and i just said it ‘ cause you know i was like lalala i had to , had to stay after school everyday at this thing in the tub , i don ’ t mean that there were like five eels swimming in the water in the tub , and then my sister turns to me and she goes everyday is sunny, called adventure club and adventure club took place in the cafeteria and we all just sat around i mean it ’ s like a horror movie , like it ’ s filled with eels and they were all it ’ s just the clouds block the sun and i was like and played board games , basically they tried to keep us preoccupied and and slithering around each other, really pretty nasty, right ? so literally, my mind could not realize that , i was like from not hurting ourselves until our parents um finally came and picked us up , i was always so curious , they were all black and um i ’ d never seen anything like them , oh my god , you mean , the sun is like always out and most of the kids had stay - at - home moms where i was living so their mom would come and pick them there is no other animal or fish that that ’ s like them and it ’ s , it ’ s always just above the clouds like my my little mind like worked so hard up but i had to wait an additional two hours until my dad would get off work and uh i would go out and push the wooden board aside and i ’ d peek in to like figure out what it meant and then i realized that and then i was like and so that was what ross was also in adventure club and sometimes i would stick my hand in and grab one and then i ’ d get more oh my god , everyday is sunny, that ’ s crazy and so , and um brave , and i ’ d take an eel out and hold it , and then that was , that was a moment that i really realized that like i didn ’ t quite understand uh sorry i lost my train of thought um one time , i took one out and i dropped it and it was slithering around on the ground the world and that people could teach me like all these new things we just um we would always draw pictures , we only, we only did a few activities , and i was scared , i don ’ t know what i was scared of that that took me a while to understand but once when i knew i was like that ’ s really cool . in the summer we would we would go out and we would we would we would take yellow plastic but i couldn ’ t catch it , so there was a sledge hammer
18 16
baseball bats and try to kill yellow - jackets around a trashcan , this is how bored we were and then nearby which uh a rubber mallet , i don ’ t know, maybe they ’ re the same thing ,
16 14
if we weren ’ t doing that we were drawing pictures , and i had a character named and i took the rubber mallet and i beat it and i killed it
15 9
zucchni cookie and uh he had some other characters one time he got really mad and i threw it off into the field and
18 11
at me for trying , trying to , for using one of his characters but that was because he said covered it back up , covered the bathtub of eels back up
24 8
he didn ’ t want to draw it anymore , and i thought it was a pretty sweet character so i started drawing it and um and i was pretty young , i was probably
10 9
he got really mad at me about this and uh eight or ten , and i think about that probably
9 16
he uh we both , both went to the bathroom monthly, just that ’ s probably the only time i ’ ve ever intentionally killed an animal larger
15 8
and the bathroom was kind of far off it was down the hallway and um than a bug um and it really really
18 12
i guess whenever in the bathroom you know, he finished peeing and doing his business earlier than me sticks with me , there was absolutely no need to kill that eel ,
20 20
and he um he thought it would be really funny to stand in front of the door with his arms if i ’ d just let it go it would have died on its own but it was just that fear
24 9
really wide like this so i couldn ’ t get out of the door and he just thought this was hysterical and he would flip that overtook me and i had to kill it .
23
the lights on and off really fast , he kept turning on the lights so it was a very like intense like strobe - light effect
7
and uh i was super freaked out
26
‘ cause
19
so he had to take everything way too far so what he was also turning on all the uh
you know i was like a super shy and timid kid this sort of thing really freaked me out and of course it was ross ,
20
all the hairdryers in the bathroom , so it was all this sound happening , and lights were going on and off,
16
and i was totally freaking out , and since it was ross he had to take everything
21
not only too far past the point where it was it was annoying and even farther than that , and he just
19
would not stop , so i was nearly at the point of tears here ‘ cause this kid was completely ballistic
23
and and trapping me in the bathroom and turning on the hairdryers , but he had every five minutes the hairdryers would go off they were on a timer, so my only way of escaping was waiting for all of the hairdryers
19
‘ cause
20
to go off ‘ cause he would have to run and hit the hairdryers again to make them go back on
17
so at one moment he uh he ran to hit the hairdryers and that was my escape ,
19
so i grabbed the door and ran out , and right as i opened the door, one of the um
13
one of the uh people who ran adventure club was there , and uh
13
they had seen the whole thing , and i got in trouble for it ,
13
which is really really shitty um ross um also got in trouble too ,
23
but i really didn ’ t feel like i deserved that , and i uh i still remember having to explain that to my dad ,
15
that i was in trouble because my irritating friend ross locked me in the bathroom
13
and turned off all the lights and flipped on all the hairdryers um ,
12
anyways i don ’ t think i will ever be the same again comparing three stories each line indicates a 5-seconds increment

I was twenty one and moving out of my first rented home. The dishes had not been done in months and at ten in the morning i awoke to my roomate resolving the issue by simply throwing them all in the garbage (including one of my favorite tumblers, of which it’s sister now lives as a pencil jar, since I can’t stand having single kinds of anything). When I was in, I believe it was fourth grade, I think, um | I had a friend named Ross Mercer and Ross Mercer sucked, | he was like the most irritating human being on the planet, | he had no self-control um and he was never knew when to stop, he always did everything past | the point where it was funny to the point where it was genuinely irritating and and he would continue, | but I was incredibly shy and antisocial and I had no friends, | he was, he was the best thing I had so Ross Mercer was my friend | and uh both, both my parents worked so um | I had to, had to stay after school everyday at this thing | called adventure club and adventure club took place in the cafeteria and we all just sat around | and played board games, basically they tried to keep us preoccupied and and | from not hurting ourselves until our parents um finally came and picked us up, | most of the kids had stay-at-home moms where I was living so their mom would come and pick them | up but I had to wait an additional two hours until my dad would get off work and uh | and so that was what Ross was also in adventure club | and um | uh sorry I lost my train of thought um | we just um we would always draw pictures, we only, we only did a few activities, | in the summer we would we would go out and we would we would we would take yellow plastic | baseball bats and try to kill yellow-jackets around a trashcan, this is how bored we were and then | if we weren’t doing that we were drawing pictures, and I had a character named | Zucchni Cookie and uh he had some other characters one time he got really mad | at me for trying, trying to, for using one of his characters but that was because he said | he didn’t want to draw it anymore, and I thought it was a pretty sweet characters so I started drawing it and um | he got really mad at me about this and uh | he uh we both, both went to the bathroom | and the bathroom was kind of far off it was down the hallway and um | I guess whenever in the bathroom you know, he finished peeing and doing his business earlier than me | and he um he thought it would be really funny to stand in front of the door with his arms | really wide like this so I couldn’t get out of the door and he just thought this was hysterical and he would flip | the lights on and off really fast, he kept turning on the lights so it was a very like intense like strobe-light effect | and uh I was super freaked out | ‘cause you know I was like a super shy and timid kid this sort of thing really freaked me out and of course it was Ross, | so he had to take everything way too far so what he was also turning on all the uh | all the hairdryers in the bathroom, so it was all this sound happening, and lights were going on and off, | and I was totally freaking out, and since it was Ross he had to take everything | not only too far past the point where it was it was annoying but even farther than that, and he just | would not stop, so I was nearly at the point of tears here ‘cause this kid was completely ballistic | and and trapping me in the bathroom and turning on the hairdryers, but he had every five minutes the hairdryers would go off | ‘cause they were on a timer, so my only way of escaping was waiting for all of the hairdryers | to go off ‘cause he would have to run and hit the hairdryers again to make them go back on | so at one moment he uh he ran to hit the hairdryers and that was my escape, | so I grabbed the door and ran out, and right as I opened the door, one of the um | one of the uh people who ran adventure club was there, and uh | they had seen the whole thing, and I got in trouble for it, | which is really really shitty um Ross um also got in trouble too, | but I really didn’t feel like I deserved that, and I uh I still remember having to explain that to my dad, | that I was in trouble because my irritating friend Ross locked me in the bathroom | and turned off all the lights and flipped on all the hairdryers um, | anyways I don’t think I will ever be the same again

but it was just that fear that overtook me and I have to kill it
Design Process : Dec 2 , 2010
When I was a kid, my dad was a crazy fisherman, he would go out all night | and come home and sleep for an hour or two and then he would | get up and work all day um he had boats, he ran a charter boat, | which we had a little business out of it and in order to | have bait, he kept a bath tub in our side yard, | filled with eels and there was a wooden, | a wooden top for it, there was almost always water | running through the tub, and when I said that there were eels | in the tub, I don’t mean that there were like five eels swimming in the water in the tub, | I mean it’s like a horror movie, like it’s filled with eels and they were all | slithering around each other, really pretty nasty, right? So | I was always so curious, they were all black and um I’d never seen anything like them, | there is no other animal or fish that that’s like them and | I will go out and push the wooden board aside and I’d peek in | and sometimes I would stick my hand in and grab one and then I’d get more | brave, and I’d take an eel out and hold it, and then | one time, I took one out and I dropped it and it was slithering around on the ground | and I was scared, I don’t know what I was scared of | but I couldn’t catch it, so there were a sledge hammer | nearby which uh a rubber mallet, I don’t know, maybe they’re the same thing, | and I took the rubber mallet and I beat it and I killed it | and I threw it off into the field and | covered it back up, covered the bathtub of eels back up | and I was pretty young, I was probably | eight or ten, and I think about that probably | monthly, just that’s probably the only time I’ve ever intentionally killed an animal larger | than a bug um and It really really | sticks with me, there was absolutely no need to kill that eel, | If I’d just let it go it would have die on its own but it was just that fear | that overtook me and I had to kill it.

EVERYDAY IS A SUNNY DAY. Design Process : Dec 2 , 2010
A story from my childhood that sort of defines | like a moment of realization for me was when, | I remember I was really young and I was, that’s probably like six | or seven and I was in the car with my brother and sister in | um the back seat and my dad was driving | and it was a really cloudy day and it was kind of cold and I just | didn’t like the weather outside and I was like looking at the window and I was like I wish everyday | was a sunny day and I just said it ‘cause you know I was like lalala | and then my sister turns to me and she goes everyday is sunny, | It’s just the cloud block the Sun and I was like | literally, my mind could not realize that, I was like | oh my God, you mean, the Sun is like always out and | it’s, it’s always just above the cloud like my my little mind like worked so hard | to like figure it out what it meant and then I realized that and then I was like | oh my God, everyday is sunny, that’s crazy and so, | that was, that was the moment that I really realized that like I didn’t quite understand | the world and that people could teach me like all these new things | that that took me a while to understand but once when I knew I was like that’s really cool.

When

I

um
I

a

and
Ross
he
was

the

he

and
he
was

it

to
the
point
where
it
was
genuinely irritating and
and
he
would
continue
but
I
was
he
was
he
was
the
best
thing
I
had
so
Ross
Mercer
was
I
had to
had to
stay
after
school
everyday
at
this
thing
called
adventure club
and
played
board
games,
basically
they
tried
to
keep
us
preoccupiedand
most
of
the
kids
had
to
stay
at
home
moms
where
and
so
that
was
what
Ross
was
also
in
sorry
I
lost
train
of
thought
um
we
we
would
we
would
go
out
and
we
if
we
weren’t
doing
that
we
were
at
me
for
trying
trying
to
he
got
really
mad
at
bathroom and
bathroom was
my
friend
and
uh
both
both
my
parents
wor
took
place
in
the
cafeteria
and
we
all
uh
and
from
not
hurting
ourselves
until
our
parents
um
fina
I
was
living
so
their
mom
would
come
and
pick
us
adventure club
and
um
uh
just
um
we
would
always
draw
pictures
we
only
we
only
did
a
few
would
we
would
we
would
take
yellow
plastic
basebll
bats
and
try
to
kill
drawing
pictures
and
I
had
a
character named
Zucchini
cookie
and
uh
he
had
som
for
trying
to
use
one
of
his
characters he
said
he
didn’t
want
it
anymore
and
me
about
this
and
uh
he
uh
we
both
both
went
the
to
kind
of
far
off
it
was
down
the
hallway
and
um
I
guess
whenever in
the
bathroom you
and
he
um
he
thought
it
would
be
really
funny
to
stand
in
front
of
the
door
with
his
arms
wide
like
the
lights
on
and
off
really
fast
he
kept
turning
on
the
lights
so
it
was
a
very
intense
like
strobe
ligh
and
timid
kid
this
sort
of
stuff
really
freaked
me
out
and
of
course
it
was
Ross
so
he
had
to
take
in
the
bathroom so
it
was
all
this
sound
happening and
lights
were
going
on
and
off
and
I
was
totally
frea
only
too
far
past
the
point
where
it
was
it
was
annoying and
even
further
than
that
and
he
would
not
stop
me
in
the
bathroom and
turning
on
the
hairdryers but
he
had
every
five
minutes
the
hairdryers would
go
off
‘cause
they
‘cause
he
would
have
to
run
and
hit
the
hairdryers again
to
make
them
go
back
on
so
at
one
moment
he
so
I
grabbed
the
door
and
ran
out
and
right
as
I
opened
the
door
one
of
the
uh
people
who
ran
had
seen
the
whole
thing
and
I
got
in
trouble
for
it
which
is
really
really
shitty
um
Ross
um
also
got
I
really
didn’t
feel
like
deserved
that
and
I
uh
I
still
remember having
to
explain
that
to
my
dad
that
I
and
turned
off
all
the
lights
and
flipped
on
all
the
hairdryers um
I
don’t
think
that
I
will
ever
be
