Bring back the British runner bean! UK growers unite to prevent runners becoming 'has-beens' The humble British runner bean has fallen on hard times in recent years. Not only is the number of households buying British runner beans declining, but the Great British public has appeared to turn its back on this once most quintessential of British summertime favourite vegetables. Last year, just 12% of households bought British runner beans during their July-September season run, down almost a quarter (23%) in just five years and if that wasn't bad enough, the latest consumer research* reveals that almost a third of consumers in the UK (31%) have absolutely no idea when British runner beans are in season. Runner bean awareness is even worse within the younger generation with a whopping 44% of 18-24 year olds unable to accurately determine when the British runner bean season actually is. And some 32% of young adults claim they never eat British runner beans during the three-month season. In sharp contrast, the same number (32%) admits that they eat American-inspired tinned baked beans up to twice a week! The research also reveals there is a very distinctive age divide when it comes to the love and appreciation of British runner beans. It is most definitely the older generation which supports the runner bean industry, with almost three quarters (74%) of consumers aged 55+ correctly identifying when the runner bean season is. And some 50% of older Brits claim to eat runner beans 1-2 times a week between July-September each year. Daniel Grover of Wealmoor, one of the UK's leading providers of British runner beans, said "Consumers seem to have fallen out of love with runner beans in recent years and sales have been declining steadily. It is worrying for growers that it is the older generation which appears to be the biggest supplylocal.co.uk/food
Page 9
supporters of runner beans while young adults appear to have a preference for other bean varieties. UK grown Runner Beans have a great heritage and are available from July through to October. Maintaining and growing demand is very important". British runner bean growers have joined forces to try and stem the tide of declining sales and are spearheading a Great British Runner Bean revival campaign to get runner beans back on the menu and to encourage the younger generation to back the once popular bean. Support of the runner bean has begun among the blogging community with 15 of the UK's top food bloggers taking part in an underground project to blog and tweet about the process of growing, harvesting and enjoying these forgotten beans. Daniel Grover continued: "The last thing we want is for our beloved runners to become 'has-beens'. They should be the jewel in the crown of the British summer seasonal menu - fresh, tender, succulent and bursting with flavour, they are wonderfully versatile adding colour and sensational taste to any number of dishes, not to mention the fact they're a great source of vitamin C, folic acid and fibre. "If we're to halt the decline of the British runner bean we need to capture the imagination of the next generation of consumers encouraging children and young adults to give runner beans a try, have a go at growing their own and support British locally-grown runner beans."

British Food Fortnight 2011 Running from 17th September to 2nd October, British Food Fortnight is the biggest national celebration of the diverse and delicious range of food that Britain produces. This year marks British Food Fortnight's 10th anniversary - a decade of glorious food! Since the event started thousands of activities have taken place around the country, more than 70 organisations now take part, over a thousand independent shops, many of the major supermarkets, nine of the largest food service organisations and eight major pub groups have run promotions; retailers report sales increases of 34% as a result; school meals are up 20 - 50% in participating schools; the largest volunteer movement educating people about food has been founded; St Paul's Cathedral, St Pancras, Harrods, Wembley Stadium, Downing Street and The Archers are just a few of the famous establishments that have taken part; and media coverage about the event is seen or heard over 300 million times every year. Commenting on the event's anniversary, founder Alexia Robinson says "British Food Fortnight started when the countryside was in the grip of Foot and Mouth. The aim was to reinvigorate Harvest Festival - the idea of everyone coming together to celebrate the produce of our land; and to make us more like the French and the Italians whose love of their regional foods is ingrained in their national consciousness. 10 years on it is the biggest, and only, food umbrella uniting everyone in the country." So how can you get involved? There are many ways you can get involved in British Food Fortnight - highlight British produce in store with POS material; offer tastings of new or existing British products in your store; run a special British Food Fortnight menu during the event focusing on British, seasonal produce; run a promotional

Page 11
masterclass for your customers; offer your services to a local school; and use British Food Fortnight as a catalyst for building long term relationships. For more ideas see the retailer and caterer pages on www.lovebritishfood.co.uk And why should you take part? Retailers and caterers in previous British Food Fortnight activities have consistently enjoyed sales increases, strengthened relationships with existing customers and attracted new ones, and confirmed British Food Fortnight is a proven profit opportunity. Atul Sodha, store manager of Londis Peverills found "Sales on one day during British Food Fortnight were up ÂŁ400. Sales on the first week were up ÂŁ1000!" The greatest prize, however, is still to come. The countdown to 2012 is upon us. And for producers, retailers and caterers, the opportunity to seize a piece of the Olympic commercial cake with patriotic British food promotions is huge. The eyes of the world will be upon us, patriotism will be at fever pitch and food and sport go hand in hand making 2012 the biggest opportunity for a generation to shout why British food is the best. This year's event signifies the countdown to 2012 when British Food Fortnight will run at the same time as the London Olympics (27 July to 12 August 2012). The aim is to stage the biggest showcase of British food the world has ever seen. The organisers are using this year's event to rally every shop, pub and restaurant in the country to start planning their promotions now, so they are ready to capitalise on the huge commercial opportunity that the Olympics provide.

Pea, Beetroot, Roasted Red Pepper and Goats Cheese Open Tart Ingredients (Serves 4) Plain flour for dusting 500g ready made puff pastry 1 free range egg, lightly beaten
100g peas, shelled (approx. 335g unshelled) 100g ready cooked red peppers in oil, drained 100g goats cheese, crumbled 100g plain cooked beetroot, drained and cut into chunks Small bunch of flat leaf parsley, picked
Method Preheat the oven to 200C Lightly dust a work surface with the flour, and roll out the puff pastry until it is 4mm thick. Cut out 4 discs with a 11.5cm round pastry cutter and then with a sharp small knife lightly score around the pastry discs 1cm away from the edge, trying not to cut through the pastry. Then brush with the beaten egg, lay the pasty discs onto a non stick baking try and place in the oven on the middle shelf and cook for 20 minutes, or until golden. Once cooked remove from the oven and leave to cool. Then remove the inner part with a small knife. While you are waiting for the pastry to cook, bring a pan of salted water to the boil, cook the peas for 2 minutes, then drain and refresh under cold water for another minute, drain and set aside.
4tbsp extra virgin olive oil 1tbsp Balsamic vinegar Salt and pepper
Cut the peppers into thick slices and then place into a medium sized bowl with the peas, goat's cheese, beetroot and parsley. In a small bowl mix together the extra virgin olive oil and Balsamic vinegar, then add 2 tablespoons to the vegetables and goats cheese, season with salt and pepper and mix well. Place the pastry discs on 4 plates and fill with the vegetables and goats cheese, drizzle the rest of the dressing around the plates and serve.

Tenderstem速 and Bengali Split Pea Curry with Caramelized Shallots Making a curry from scratch can seem a daunting task, but this is recipe easy enough to make on a Friday night without causing any stress! It's also a really healthy option, too, as it's full of protein from the split peas and packed with nutrients from the Tenderstem速 broccoli.
Ingredients 1 large onion, roughly chopped 2-3 cloves garlic, peeled and sliced 2 cm piece fresh ginger, roughly chopped 2 tbsp vegetable oil 200g yellow split peas 200g Tenderstem速, sliced into 3cm pieces Small bunch coriander, roughly chopped Freshly ground black pepper and sea salt For the spice mix: 2 tsp cumin seeds 2 tsp fennel seeds 2 tsp fenugreek seeds 2 tsp mustard seeds 2 tsp nigella seeds 1-2tsp dried chili flakes, to taste For the caramelized shallots: 300g shallots, peeled and cut into thin slices 3 tbsp vegetable oil
Method Make the spice mix by dry frying the all the spices together for a minute or so. As soon as you smell their aroma wafting up strongly from the pan tip them into a pestle and mortar and roughly grind. Set aside. Puree the onion, garlic and ginger in a food processor until smooth, adding a tablespoon or so of cold water to help this process along if necessary. Heat the oil in a large heavy based pan and gently fry the onion, garlic and ginger puree until soft and translucent. This should take around 10 minutes. Add the ground spices and fry for a further couple of minutes before adding the split peas. Pour in enough boiling water to cover the peas by about 3cm and bring up to a simmer. Cook, uncovered, for 20 minutes stirring from time to time. You may need to add a little more water towards the end if it is looking a little dry.
