Elgin Sweeper Releases DualEyes On RegenX
Elgin Sweeper announced the new Elgin DualEyes Camera system for visibility on the front right tire and front right corner of the sweeper in addition to the right-side broom.
product engineering manager, Elgin Sweeper. “Delivering quality and proven technology is Elgin’s key focus, and DualEyes offers that enhanced technology that helps operators clean streets even more effectively.”
DualEyes can be used in bright sunlight or in darkness without any lighting. A clear color picture is available at night due to the use of Starlight Technology. The camera integrates rear-view and pickup head cameras on RegenX sweepers utilizing a 10-inch dash-mounted screen, so operators only have one central location they need to look.
Beyond increased visibility, the new DualEyes also delivers reliability. It is both waterproof and dustproof. A heavy-duty zinc casing on all cameras helps enhance durability.
The new DualEyes will first be available on the Elgin RegenX – a mid-dump, regenerative air sweeper that is both reliable and durable. The DualEyes system is for use
when there is no right-hand steering available, so operating the sweeper from the lefthand position is possible. This helps reduce costs and chassis lead times.
“Elgin’s RegenX is known for being easy to use, and with DualEyes, that ease is increased,” said Jeff Tolzin,
“These viewing angles help Elgin customers,” said Tolzin. “DualEyes provides safe and effective operations with better visibility of traffic. From maneuvering around cars to navigating cul-de-sacs, the DualEyes helps operators productively complete the job in comfort.” SP

OTR Introduces ThreePiece Forestry Wheel
OTR Engineered Solutions has introduced a 32-inch, three-piece wheel for log skidders and forwarders in forestry applications.
The unique multi-piece design offers many benefits, including increased productivity, reduced downtime, and enhanced efficiency.
“The new three-piece wheel is a real game changer in the forestry industry,” said Tom Rizzi, President and CEO. “This solution can help customers increase their load carrying capacity, while simplifying the process of changing tires in the field.”
The robust design of the
three-piece wheel allows tires to simply slide on and off the rim when mounting and dismounting without the need for specialized equipment. Not only does this process reduce downtime, but it also minimizes the risk of bead damage since the tire does not need to be pried over the rim.
Furthermore, tires with higher ply ratings can be installed to help maximize the productivity of the power unit. For instance, a
PARTS & COMPONENTS
skidder may be able to add 28,000 to 42,000 pounds of additional tire load capacity with 40,000 to 60,000 pounds of additional headroom by upgrading to higher ply tires and OTR’s new wheels.
The three-piece wheel parallels all aspects of OTR’s industry-leading 32-inch single piece wheels, which have been proven in the harshest of conditions by top tier OEM customers. The new design reduces the potential for tire indexing, or spinning, on the rim. Multiple other features are built in for improved strength, torque retention, tire sealing, and overall durability.
“There are many benefits to our three-piece wheel design. Increased load capacity, reduced indexing, and easier tire mounting and dismounting offer huge advantages in the forestry industry,” said Rizzi. “All of these individually can result in a better bottom line.”
OTR currently offers 32x27 and 32x31 wheel configurations, compatible with 30.5L32 and 35.5L32 tires. SP

BOMAG Introduces Emergency Brake Assist
Following the successful completion of all certifications, the new Emergency Brake Assist from BOMAG for pivot-steered tandem rollers is now available to customers worldwide in full and without restrictions.
Avoiding dangerous situations on the construction site: this is one of BOMAG’s core principles when developing new components and technologies. Optimizing the interaction between human and machine plays a key role here. This also applies to BOMAG’s latest automated assistance system: Emergency Brake Assist, which was designed for use on the AP-5 generation of pivot-steered BOMAG tandem rollers.
The emergency braking system prevents collisions during operation while protecting the hot asphalt surface from damage. It continuously scans the machine’s surroundings, allowing it to recognize potential hazards early and automatically initiate an appropriate driving response.
Lidar-based
environment monitoring
Thanks to the advanced
multi-level lidar technology, the machine can accurately assess its surroundings and project its travel path based on speed and steering angle. Other operational parameters are also automatically factored in, such as whether the roller is in crab steering mode.
All this enables the reliable detection of people and objects in the machine’s path. BOMAG Emergency Brake Assist can identify both stationary and moving obstacles. This allows the localization of objects and persons that are potentially at risk when the machine is in motion.
The fully integrated solution allows the machine to “see around corners,” so to speak, and identify obstacles before critical situations arise.
Many hydraulic loader blades for snow removal, from 2.5-yard to 5-yard
An automated safety system that adapts to the operator
In the event of a potential collision, the emergency brake assistant automatically intervenes, applying different braking strategies. If the driving situation allows, the roller’s working speed is only reduced – for example, if a person is already moving out of the vehicle’s path and thus away from the potential danger zone. These automatic deceleration features not only help to prevent accidents but also protect the hot asphalt surface from damage caused by abrupt braking. The early anticipation and braking strategies minimize the risk of damage to the asphalt layer and increase the service life of the road surface.
The assist system is displayed and operated via the touchscreen, which is fitted as standard on pivot-steered BOMAG tandem rollers. Emergency Brake Assist can be individually adapted to the driving style of the operator and the specific site
three stages at any time.
Optimum support for roller operators
A safe construction site requires the expertise and vigilance of all employees.
BOMAG assistance systems are all designed to support them in fulfilling their responsibilities with the best possible technical solutions. The company’s Emergency Brake Assist helps to prevent collisions, especially when site conditions are particu
larly challenging or visibility is poor, for example, at dusk or on night sites. The emergency braking assistant represents a significant advance in safety technology for road construction machinery and offers substantial benefits to both operators and site personnel. It represents an innovative solution that significantly enhances efficiency and safety on construction SP

Celebrating 75 Years of Inland Truck & Equipment: A Legacy of Innovation and Service
Inland Truck & Equipment shares a significant milestone for the British Columbia company, celebrating 75 years of excellence in the heavy truck and equipment industry.
From our humble beginnings in British Columbia to becoming one of the world’s largest Kenworth dealerships, our journey has been defined by a commitment to innovation, resilience, and exceptional customer service.
Humble Beginnings and Bold Moves
The story of Inland began in 1949 with founder Lloyd Parker’s vision of meeting the needs of his customers, one truck at a time. From selling farm equipment and surplus U.S. military vehicles in Penticton, British Columbia, to recognizing the enormous potential of the Kenworth brand, Lloyd’s
business instincts would shape Inland’s future in ways that are still felt today.
In 1956, a customer named Bob Hayes requested a Kenworth truck—a brand Lloyd was only vaguely familiar with at the time. Teaming up with a local shop, Lloyd secured the Kenworth and sold it to Hayes. A year later, when the customer never returned for repairs, Lloyd realized just how exceptional the Kenworth product was. This led to a pivotal moment in 1957 when Inland secured a dealership agreement with Canadian Kenworth. From that moment, Inland’s trajectory shifted, and Inland Kenworth was born.
Growth, Expansion, and Diversification
Over the decades, Inland has expanded and evolved significantly. After securing the Kenworth dealership, Inland grew across British Columbia in the 1960s, diversi-
fying into heavy equipment for forestry and construction by the 1970s. The 1980s marked its entry into the U.S.—acquiring Kenworth dealerships in California and Arizona—while also partnering with Link-Belt Excavators. The 1990s and 2000s saw further growth through partnerships with CASE and Tigercat, as well as strategic acquisitions in both the U.S. and Western Canada. Inland’s introduction of TRP parts-only stores in the 2010s enhanced service capabilities across North America. By the 2020s, Inland had solidified its place as a leader in the trucking and heavy equipment industries.
Supporting the Communities Who’ve Supported Us
In 2022, Inland consolidated its long-standing tradition of philanthropy under the new I-Care brand. This initiative has empowered
team members to elevate their charitable efforts and broaden community impact. A notable example occurred in 2023, when Inland celebrated Kenworth’s 100th anniversary by auctioning three limited-edition W900 trucks. The proceeds, totaling over $500,000, were donated to charities like Truckers Against Trafficking, Spirit of the North Healthcare Foundation, Canuck Place Children’s Hospice, and STARS Air Ambulance.
A Culture of Collaboration and Excellence
Inland’s success over the past 75 years is due in no small part to the dedication of our employees. From the start, Lloyd Parker believed that if you take care of your employees, they will take care of your customers. This guiding principle has
fostered a collaborative and supportive culture at Inland, one that has driven our success for over seven decades.
To ensure our team continues to meet the highest standards of service, we recently launched COMPASS, our innovative Learning Management System (LMS). COMPASS provides our employees with ongoing training, certifications, and continuous learning opportunities tailored to their roles—ensuring that they stay at the forefront of industry advancements.
Looking to the Future
As we celebrate our 75th anniversary, we remain focused on the future. With a network that spans 44 locations across British Columbia, Yukon, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, California, Arizona, and New Mexico, we
are proud to be one of the largest Kenworth dealerships globally. Inland is also committed to embracing zero-emissions technologies— supporting our customers as they navigate the fast-changing world. We will continue to push the boundaries of innovation, deliver exceptional service, and give back to the communities where we live and operate.
While much has changed since 1949, the core values that Lloyd Parker instilled in the company—integrity, dedication to customer satisfaction, and a commitment to excellence—remain our foundation. As we look to the next 75 years, we are confident that the legacy of Inland Truck & Equipment will continue to inspire and endure. SP

MAJOR Updates App
MAJOR, a leading global manufacturer of high-performance wire screen media, updates The MAJOR App.
The new application update combines The MAJOR App with the FLEX-MAT Sensor App to create one resource for mining and aggregate producers and MAJOR dealers. Depending on the type of user, the app includes marketing materials, expert documents and a newsroom with articles and announcements as well as the RFID reader technology and the FLEX-MAT Sensor.
“Productivity is a priority when it comes to our customers — and we’re dedicated to providing technological solutions to help streamline screen media maintenance processes,”
said Kevin Laporte, MAJOR R&D manager. “Simplifying The MAJOR App allows customers to access all their screen media data in one place — saving time and virtually eliminating room for measurement errors.”
The MAJOR App streamlines customer and dealer processes by digitalizing relevant product information. Customers and dealers can track and store screen media data such as screen dimensions and customer-defined details to simplify the ordering process through FLEXMAT ID Enabled. The RFID technology allows customers
and dealers to easily access product information through The MAJOR App without needing an additional reading device. Operations simply scan the FLEX-MAT screen with The MAJOR App to access product information. This makes the reordering process easier by minimizing the need to climb onto the screen deck to measure screen. Fewer physical measurements also reduce the potential for mistakenly ordering the wrong size, which can result in producing outof-spec products. For screen media without ID Enabled features, the app includes an augmented measurement tool where customers and dealers can use their phone camera for approximate measurements.
The app also features the FLEX-MAT Sensor, a vibration data measurement tool operations can utilize to finetune their screen machine without shutting down the equipment. Operators connect to a single sensor, which is placed on one corner of the machine at a time. The sensor is moved to each corner of the machine to get a full view of the vibrational data. Once the measurement process is com-
plete, the data is delivered to The MAJOR App, where it is stored locally for ease of use and viewing in areas with cellular limitations. Once a signal is available, the information is uploaded into MAJOR’s cloud storage, where it is viewable from a web browser. By providing accessible, real-time data immediately following a vibration analysis, the MAJOR App supports quick and easy maintenance for maximized production.
Merging The MAJOR App with the FLEX-MAT Sensor App makes updating the app easier, especially when it comes to measurement and ordering. Combining these applications creates one easy location for all functionalities, creating a more secure login system and making updates easier in the future.
The application also includes an efficiency calculator, open area calculator and a warehouse function that compiles a list of screen media in storage along with their specifications. These features help operations closely monitor production as well as inventory for improved efficiency. SP

Caterpillar Launches New Compact Loaders
Caterpillar has introduced eight new next generation Cat Skid Steer Loader and Compact Track Loader models.
Four new Cat SSLs – the Cat 250, 260, 270, and 270 XE – mark the introduction of the next generation design to the SSL line. Meanwhile, the new Cat 275, 275 XE, 285 and 285 XE mark the expansion of the next generation design for the CTL line, joining the 255 and 265 announced in late 2023. The largest CTLs ever produced by Caterpillar, the new Cat 285 and 285 XE compete in a new class size with greater lift height and lift and tilt breakout forces.
Maintaining the DNA of what made the Cat D3 series a leader, the next generation SSL and CTL models are a ground-up redesign that improves on the features that made the previous series popular. High performance is the standard for these next generation machines, elevating Caterpillar’s loader reputation through upgrades in engine power and torque,
lift and tilt breakout forces, stability, operator comfort, and technology.
The new SSL and CTL models carry on Caterpillar’s new machine nomenclature with the elimination of the series letter designation. All next generation Cat SSLs are now identified by an ending model number of 0, while all CTLs have a model number ending in 5. Simplifying nomenclature, the middle number represents machine size with a larger number designating a larger machine.
“We are excited to launch the next generation design for our skid steer loader line and expand the performance capabilities to more compact track loader models,” comments Trevor Chase, senior product consultant and new product introduction lead for Caterpillar. “Their increased power, lift height, breakout forces, rated operating capac-
ity (ROC) and multiple highflow auxiliary hydraulic system options give customers a flexible, high-performance machine to get the job done.”

Their new closed-center auxiliary hydraulic system allows these machines to operate all Cat Smart Attachments with the standard hydraulics provided. Standard hydraulic system pressure increases 5% to 3,500 psi (24130 kPa) in the next generation models. Cat 250, 260, 270 and 275 machines equipped with standard hydraulic flow are shipped from the factory outfitted as “High Flow ready.” High Flow functionality is activated simply via a new software enabled attachment (SEA), permitting on-machine or remote activation of increased hydraulic flow to 30 gal/min (113 l/min) for the 250, 260, and 270 models and 34 gal/min (129 l/min) for the 275 at standard hydraulic system pressure.
Also available, the High Flow XPS factory option increases auxiliary hydraulic system pressure to 4,061 psi (28000 kPa) for the 250, 260, 270, 275 and 285 next generation models. Along with this, hydraulic flow is increased to 30 gal/min (113 l/min) on the
250, while flow increases to 34 gal/min (129 l/min) for the 260, 270, 275 and 285 models. Equipping the 250 with the High Flow XPS option gives customers auxiliary hydraulic performance not available before in a mid-size chassis SSL. Equipped for maximum hydraulic capability, the High Flow option for 270 XE, 275 XE and 285 XE loaders increases auxiliary hydraulic system pressure to 4,496 psi (31000 kPa) and hydraulic flow to 40 gal/min (150 l/ min).
The four next generation CTL models feature a new E-bar (equalizer bar) undercarriage that provides increased stability for grading and handling heavier loads. The E-bar undercarriage harnesses Caterpillar’s heritage and leadership with track type tractors to provide a hybrid undercarriage solution. It delivers the benefits of a rigid-style undercarriage design when lifting heavy loads or using heavy attachments like mulchers and dozer and grader blades, while simultaneously providing the benefits of an oscillating undercarriage when encountering uneven terrain or obstacles.
Upgraded operator comfort
All next generation Cat SSLs and CTLs feature a larger cab design with 22% more overall volume and 26% additional foot space. With a 2.75-in (70-mm) increase in interior width, the new cab expands footwellto-ceiling height by 1.8 in (46 mm) and allows for an additional 1.5 in (40 mm) of hip room and 1.1 in (28 mm) more width between the joysticks to improve operator comfort.
Next generation loaders are equipped with either a 5-in (127-mm) standard LCD monitor or an 8-in (203-mm) advanced touchscreen monitor, depending on the selected technology package. Like the advanced display on the D3 series, the standard monitor features Bluetooth connectivity and supports functionality for rearview camera feed, creep, job clock, maintenance reminders and 32 languages. The advanced touchscreen monitor provides a higher level of control over standard monitor functionality, offers advanced radio control, and supports side cameras and 32 language
choices. The new advanced joysticks enable integrated control of the advanced touchscreen monitor, so all machine function control and adjustments can be made without the operator removing their hands from the controls.
A range of new mechanical and air-ride suspension seat options are available for these next generation machines, including a highcomfort seat that is both ventilated and heated. New auto temperature control plus vent outlet positioning above the operator help the new HVAC system to quickly cool the cab’s interior.
Entering and exiting next generation loaders is much easier thanks to their low
entry points. The operator can now open the cab door without the lift arms being fully lowered to the frame stops. A simplified two-step door removal process allows operators to quickly remove it without tools. The machines’ lower engine mounting, 59% larger rear window and bigger top window providing 15% increased viewable area combine to improve operator visibility.
Technology advancements
These new SSLs and CTLs offer the next level of integrating machine and technology. Both standard and advanced monitors provide the ability to run Cat Smart Attachments, such as the dozer and grader blades
and backhoe. Attachment operation is integrated into the joysticks, and the machine automatically recognizes the type of attachment and the required joystick pattern for controlling it.

Kenny On Strike!
It was a time of layoffs, strikes, and injuries!
I had my scaling ticket at this point, but M&B didn’t need me to be scaling at the boom. Instead, they sent me to work in Iron River. The trees were yarded full length by a grapple yarder to the roadside, then a long boom loader would pull the logs out onto the road so Laurie Pendergast and George Siegler could buck and grade them. I would then scale the processed logs. This was private land and M&B could export this wood. This was what I was doing when the I.W.A. went on strike.
Eventually, these trees were loaded full length on logging trucks and dumped at Menzies Bay. The tug would tow these loads over to Trout Creek and de-water them. M&B had made a dryland sort there to process the export wood. There was lots of overtime for me and Russ Waller, who operated the tug taking booms of these full length logs over to Trout Creek. I think that was the end of family picnics at this site.
M&B then sent me out with the fallers to upgrade
the logs in the setting. One of the fallers was Roger Wright. He was in a nice setting with lots of prime yellow cedar (cypress). I had a price list with me and totaled up the volume and dollar value. Not long after lunch Roger asked how much we got; my answer was over seventy thousand dollars. That was enough for Roger, he shut the saw down for the rest of the day, says we made enough money for M&B today. This job didn’t last that long because of compensation rules where fallers had to be two tree-lengths apart. M&B didn’t know I had some falling experience working with my dad at Wilco Logging in the early seventies.
M&B and the local union members were arguing over fallers. The company wanted
to hire some more fallers and the union said we have some guys that can be fallers. Lots of men wanted to be fallers because of the high pay rate and the prestige that went with it. Everyone that wanted to be a faller put their name on the list and got a tryout for falling. I tried out, but didn’t do too well. I was sent to fall a five-foot hemlock with a bigger saw than I was used to. There were seven guys up on the road watching me (bullbuckers and foremen). So I failed. I think in the end the company took eight union men and then hired “off the street.”
While on strike, I helped my brother Rodney who was working for Twin Holdings (Farwell brothers), they had a gravel pit with a screening
plant at the end of Evergreen Road. Farwell’s had a major building project at Hidden Harbour. There were quite a few second growth trees on the gravel pit property. Rodney would fall a few trees and yard them to roadside, where I would buck them and scale them. Once we had enough, a self-loading logging truck would load and haul them to Cawley’s sawmill on Duncan Bay Road. These logs would be then cut up to make posts, railings and decking for the condo project. My Dad, living close by at Ocean Shores condos, took photos of the project from beginning to end.
The strike was over in the first week in December, but there wasn’t any M&B work until middle of January. I worked at several jobs on the boom including deck hand on the tug with Russ Waller. I also worked swiftering on the barge with Bob Louma and George Cassidy, as well as working on the breakdown float where I pulled bundle
wires off of the bundled loads. Everyone was laid off by the end of January due to heavy snowfall.
The lay-off didn’t last too long, we were back to work in the first week in February. I worked a couple of days deck handing, then I finally got back to scaling. In February, I was mostly scaling with the odd day deck handing. During that time, I took Survival First Aid Training and in late February, Bart Bjarnison took the scalers to Chemainus Sawmill to watch the fairly new sawmill in action — he even bought us lunch.
For the rest of 1987, I worked in the Boom Department scaling. In March of 1988, I was off for eight weeks for a hernia operation. SP

Haul Track Helps Customers Get More From Their Rokbak Truck
Rokbak Customer Support Manager Garry Moore explains how customers can harness Haul Track, a simple-to-use, connected telematics system to get more efficiency and productivity from their articulated haulers.
monitor truck performance. Fleet managers can access Haul Track via any internet-connected device, and its intuitive user interface makes navigating the system a breeze.
With machine insights and information at your fingertips it’s easy to understand the appeal of Haul Track, but here Rokbak Customer Support Manager Garry Moore picks out six of the biggest advantages of using the connected technology.
Keep TCO low
multiple trucks across several sites. As well as providing location data, Haul Track enables productivity tracking, operational cost monitoring and performance management. There’s a wealth of information that helps owners ensure trucks are used to their full potential, keeping TCO as low as possible.
Manage maintenance better
Eliminate bad habits
Harsh braking, rapid acceleration or excessive idling are not uncommon in articulated hauler operation, whether through misuse, poor planning or a lack of training. Yet issues such as these can have an impact on truck performance and long-term efficiency. Being able to observe, via telematics, when these issues occur allows owners to introduce corrective measures, such as retraining for operators or an alternative working route for the truck. Ultimately this will help extend the hauler’s service life, protect uptime and reduce TCO.
easier, data is presented in a standard format so it can be easily integrated into a customer’s working platform.
Understand and control location
Every Rokbak articulated hauler comes with the innovative Haul Track telematics system as standard. It’s a productivity-enhancing, connected technology that enables more efficient – and more sustainable – operations.
Telematics takes data from the truck’s onboard diagnostics system and combines it with GPS and wireless communication to
Haul Track helps machine owners achieve the lowest possible total cost of ownership (TCO). It does this by monitoring fuel consumption and machine use and identifying potential issues that could cause downtime. Realtime tracking gives customers more visibility and control, even if they’re managing
Information from Haul Track can be easily harnessed to develop a maintenance program, reducing the chances of downtime or disruption. Telematics improves efficiency by encouraging proactive maintenance and continually monitoring health parameters such as engine temperature and oil pressure. Users receive maintenance alerts and fleet activity reports to help prevent breakdowns and identify issues early. Each maintenance alert includes a list of specific items that require service or inspection. Having multiple machines monitored by Haul Track allows for coordinated maintenance scheduling, minimizing downtime further and leaving more time to focus on optimizing operations.
Seamlessly integrate
Haul Track has huge capacity to cover even the biggest fleets, with hundreds of machines working across multiple sites. It is also designed per the Association of Equipment Management Professionals (AEMP) Telematics Standard 2.0 Application Programming Interface. That means owners with mixed-brand fleets (not only Rokbak trucks) can monitor data from their entire fleet via Haul Track. To make working with Haul Track even
Without telematics, there’s a lot of uncertainty of where machines are and what they’re doing. With Haul Track, customers not only get pinpoint accuracy – which can offer huge help to service technicians trying to locate a machine on site – but a history of working routes. There’s also the ability to set geofencing, which involves creating a virtual boundary around the truck and defining where it can travel. The GPS tracks each truck and sends an alert if it breaches its defined operational area.
Easy to use and help when you need it
With Haul Track, a full training and onboarding package means customers can get up to speed with the system in no time. And there’s ongoing support and updates from Rokbak to ensure the system stays user-friendly and effective. SP

Volvo CE Adds New 12-Ton Soil Compactor
Volvo Construction Equipment is broadening its compaction range in North America with a new model targeting mediumto heavy-duty compaction jobs.
The new SD125 soil compactor is designed to provide exceptional results with low operating and ownership costs, making it a fit for both rental houses and highway contractors.
The 12-ton machine becomes the largest model in the Volvo soil compaction portfolio with an 84-inch smooth-drum and operating weight of 26,565 lbs. (12,050 kg). Its specs are similar to the existing SD115 but with a 0.2 in. (5 mm) thicker drum shell and a heavier outer eccentric weight. This results in an additional 935 lbs. (424 kg) of mass on the drum, increasing the static load and eccentric force for a different amplitude profile.
“The SD125 is a direct response to dealers and customers who have asked for a machine that combines the quality and performance of
the SD115 with the heavier weight of a 12-ton machine,” said Justin Zupanc, Compaction Product Manager.
“We take feedback seriously, and I think this model shows that.”
Superior Performance
As terrain and material depths change, the ability to adjust dynamic drum forces is as simple as the flip of a switch on the new SD125. Another switch adjusts the two drum frequencies to compensate for changing conditions, and a five-frequency feature is available as an option to further boost versatility and performance.
The center joint provides +/-35 degrees of articulation and +/-12 degrees of drum oscillation for stable yet flexible performance and greater operator comfort over rough terrain. Because the drum is in constant contact with
the ground, compaction is smooth and uniform.
The additional static weight on the drum frame enhances stability and performance with the ability to negotiate 35% slopes for better gradeability. The angled frame allows higher clearance in the approach to steep slopes and while loading, eliminating the possibility of damaging the surface or the machine. The frame and articulation joint are covered by the Volvo Lifetime Frame and Structure Warranty.
A heavy-duty axle is integrated into the drivetrain for an efficient rear wheel drive system. The No-Spin differential increases traction, eliminates tire slippage and improves gradeability, performance and productivity. A high-traction variant is available for demanding applications where additional torque is needed to tackle extreme slopes or thick lifts of loose material.
All three levels of Compact Assist software are available on the in-cab tablet (the Volvo Co-Pilot) allowing users to determine the visibility, mapping and reporting features that are most important to them.
A More Sustainable Design
The SD125 features a powerful Tier 4F four-cylinder Volvo engine with 147.5 hp (110 kW). Active DPF regeneration eliminates material build-up, further reducing emissions. The engine is backed by Volvo dealer service and parts support and a 1,000hour warranty.
Additional features include:
• A hydraulically operated engine cooling fan that runs only when needed, reducing fuel consumption.
• Lower noise levels for operator comfort.
• Optional fan reverse for cleaning out the coolers.
• Volvo long-life coolant to protect the machine for up to 6,000 hours.
• Remote hydraulic test ports that can be configured to enable quick and easy hydraulic checkpoints without having to open the system.
In line with the Volvo commitment to safety, the emergency stop system shuts down the engine, applies the brakes and stops the machine’s movement if
the operator rises from the seat for more than five seconds during operation.
The SD125 is designed and built at the Volvo CE North American headquarters in Shippensburg, Pennsylvania, along with all Volvo asphalt and soil compactors. This year marks 50 years of compaction engineering and manufacturing at the site.
The SD125 will be available for order in North America during the first half of 2025. SP

New ACom AE Diagnostic Tool From Bendix
The newest generation of diagnostic software from Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems LLC (Bendix) integrates support of its leading-edge Bendix GSBC (Global Scalable Brake Control) and GSAT (Global Scalable Air Treatment) technologies.
The software, Bendix ACom AE, is supported by Cojali and modeled on its Jaltest diagnostic software, delivering an updated look and feel while building on ACom’s twodecade legacy of providing technicians with detailed information and helping minimize downtime.
“With Bendix GSBC and GSAT now available on North American vehicles, it’s crucial to equip maintenance teams with the proper tools to keep trucks operating safely,” said TJ Thomas, Bendix director of marketing and customer solutions – Controls.
“As newer electronic control units – ECUs – have been incorporated into Bendix systems over the years, ACom has evolved to support them, and this is the next step in that development.”
Bendix – the North American leader in the development and manufacture of active safety, air management, and braking solutions for commercial vehicles –launched the original Bendix ACom diagnostic software in 2004. The tool was downloaded more than 100,000 times before being succeeded by Bendix ACom PRO™ in 2019. ACom PRO diagnostic software is no longer available for purchase as of Sept. 1, 2024, and support for ACom PRO will end Aug. 31, 2025, or when the user’s current license expires. ACom PRO™ users can check their license expiration date within the platform’s Application Settings > Registration menu.
GSBC is Bendix’s electronic braking system (EBS) technology. EBS, sometimes
called “brake-by-wire” or electropneumatic braking system technology, uses electronic signals to control brake applications – as opposed to current antilock braking systems, where that control signal is pneumatic. GSAT is a modular control system for compressed air-operated braking systems that’s built to address evolving functionalities and regional environmental regulations while providing manufacturers with a high level of flexibility during installation.
Accessible and Accurate Information, Quick Delivery
With an eye on the evolving needs of the commercial vehicle industry technician pool, Bendix ACom AE diagnostic software offers expanded accessibility through
its availability in English, French, and Spanish. Users can switch among the three languages as needed.
“We’re excited to collaborate with Bendix to offer these robust and advanced diagnostics solutions to the fleets and technicians of North America’s commercial vehicle industry,” said Bruno Gattamorta, chief commercial officer at Cojali USA Inc. “Today’s trucks and their safety systems are more complex and interconnected than ever, and keeping them running properly is an important aspect of both highway safety and effective supply chain operation.”
When connected to a vehicle, Bendix ACom AE detects and gathers active and inactive diagnostic troubleshooting codes (DTCs) from Bendix and R.H. Sheppard electronic control units on the vehicle, as well as key vehicle ECUs, like the engine and transmission. This roll call shows what’s on the vehicle, eliminating the need for a technician to guess from a prepopulated list of components.
Cojali is the world-leading developer and manufacturer of Jaltest, the multi-brand diagnostic system for commercial and other vehicle types in the aftermarket segment. With over 30 years of experience, Cojali brings deep expertise and innovative solutions to this collaboration.
The company will integrate functionality into the Bendix framework, enhancing the overall diagnostic capabilities for Bendix customers.
Gattamorta added, “Together, we will provide seamless integration and superior service, combining Bendix’s industry leadership with Cojali’s cutting-edge technology to deliver advanced diagnostics and fleet management solutions to the Bendix network.”
Munich, Germany-based Knorr-Bremse, Bendix’s parent company, is the majority shareholder of Cojali.
“Bendix ACom AE (available for download at https:// bendixacom.cojali.com) assists the technician when diagnosing and troubleshooting all our tractor and trailer elec-
tronic products and provides features that technicians have come to expect, like DTC reporting and bidirectional communication that enables configuration, calibration, and testing,” Thomas said. “It’s also compatible with RP-1210-C adapters. And as a subscription service, ACom AE will be updated approximately three times per year with no additional charge.”
Other Bendix products supported by Bendix ACom AE include Bendix antilock braking systems (ABS), automatic traction control (ATC), stability control, the family of Bendix Fusion™ advanced driver assistance systems, BlindSpotter side object detection system, iSense™ air disc brake pad wear sensing, and SmarTire Tire Pressure Monitoring System.
“We always strive to help put North America’s truck drivers in the safest vehicles possible,” Thomas said, “and to do that, we aim to give professional technicians the best tools possible.” SP

It Was What It Was!
My grandad, Obie, employed quite a few truck drivers through the years, but three of them made a lasting impression on me.
The very first truck driver I remember was Walter. He was a tall, lanky, handsome fellow who always smiled, and the word was that all the truck stop waitresses just loved him. I remember him always getting to work on time, and he usually arrived at Obie’s early enough to wash his tractor before he left on his trip, if we brothers had not had time to wash it.
I spent most of my summer nights at my grandparents’ house, and I was awakened one morning around 0400 by an extremely loud noise, which kept getting louder and louder. Looking out the open window, I watched and listened to Walter’s dark green H-67 Mack turn into Obie’s driveway. Obie was also rousted by the noise, and he soon learned that Walter had found a “torch man,” who cut the top off the muffler, removed the baffles, and then braised the top back into place. Yes, the guttedmuffler Mack was very, very loud!
Walter grinned like a Cheshire cat when Obie agreed the truck, “sounded like a truck ought to sound!” The grin disappeared when Obie informed him the muffler would have to be replaced, but to our amazement, especially Walter’s, Obie did not take the new muffler cost out of Walter’s pay, although Walter was warned not to gut any more mufflers.
Another reason I remember Walter was because he returned from a trip with the front of his trailer roof peeled-back several feet. Walter’s story, and he stuck to it, was that a highway (which he said that he previously traveled) had evidently been repaved, and the extra pavement had raised the trailer high enough that it bounced-up and the corner of the trailer hit a bridge.
Well, Walter was not the only driver who destroyed the tops of their trailers, especially since the drivers had many weekly deliveries in downtown Chicago, but none of the other drivers ever offered an excuse any
better than Walter’s. When I received my chauffeur’s license, the damaged roofs provided me with ample driving time because the trailer repair shop was about 80 miles away.
One of the other drivers was Clarence, who was a bean-pole-skinny country fellow with a really high-pitched voice. Clarence was a decent driver during warm weather months, but I remember him mostly because of his fear of driving in snow. If he knew it was going to snow during his trip, he would call in sick, rather than take a chance getting caught driving in it. Once, he was on a trip from Western NC to Illinois, and he ran into snow flurries when he reached Cincinnati. He spent the night at a Cincinnati truck stop, hoping to find clear weather the next morning, but upon finding several inches of snow, he hopped a Greyhound and went home to North Carolina. Obie had to send another driver, who took the rig on to deliver in Illinois.
When Clarence begged Obie to give him another chance, Obie told him to come in the next Sunday and he could go back to work. On Sunday, Clarence came to work, performed his pre-trip inspection on his tractor and trailer, and was ready to leave the yard when it began blowing snow. He grabbed his belongings, got out of the truck, and then informed Obie he could not leave because it was snowing. I don’t remember all the cuss words Obie flung at Clarence, but basically, he informed him he was firing him because he could not rely on him.
As soon as spring arrived, Clarence called Obie and asked him, “Are you looking for any good truck drivers?”
Obie’s reply was, “Yes, I am, but I don’t know where in the damned-hell I could find any!” Although we heard he was hauling sticks (furniture) somewhere else, we never saw him again.
And then there was Tom, a local, mild mannered, middle-aged man, who had worked quite a few jobs over
the years, so I suppose his stint as one of Obie’s drivers just added to his “How many jobs have you had?” persona.
Tom’s son, Tommy, with whom I played Little League baseball, happened to be one of our small town’s heroes. After an extremely deep snow one winter, many of the town’s kids were sledding down a long steep hill on a road which, when not snow covered, was a busy stretch of highway. Tommy must have had greased lightning on his sled that day, because he went flying past the point where everyone else’s sleds had stopped, and his sled even picked-up more speed as it went down another small hill. He was going so fast that he was unable to stop for a red light, and his sled zoomed underneath, and through, the underside of a tractor-trailer which crossed through the intersection at the same time. We all cheered, whooped, and hollered when he passed all the way under the trailer, because we were sure he was going to get squished under the tires. I am sure the truck driver did not have a clue what had just taken place. Tommy certainly beat the devil that snowy day.
Tom returned from one trip in his Emeryville with the entire right front of the tractor demolished. Since some of the metal parts (yes, metal, not plastic) still had remnants of deer hide and hair embedded in them, Obie believed Tom’s tale that he watched a deer loping across an open field beside the highway, and just at the perfect moment, the deer jumped the fence and landed on the highway in front of the truck running 60 miles per hour. That would not be the last time a tractor came home with deer damage, and times really haven’t
changed that much, because deer strikes are still damaging scores of trucks each year. I suppose that is one way to help reduce the deer population.
The fact that Tom had many different types of employment probably had a lot to do with his frequent alcohol consumption. When I was 17 years old, Tom asked if I wanted to ride with him to pick-up a load of furniture in Asheville, which was about 35 miles away. Since I had nothing better do to, I hopped into the passenger side and we left the yard. As soon as we got out-ofsight of Obie’s house, Tom pulled over at a wide spot and asked me if I wanted to drive. Well, although I had driven a truck some over the past several years, I still did not possess my chauffeur’s license. That being the case, I crawled behind the wheel and we headed up the mountain to Asheville.
By the time I had gone through all the gears, Tom had already opened his pint of Hiram Walker 10 High Bourbon. As we inched along in the traffic of Asheville’s Tunnel Road, Tom flirted with every woman we passed. By the time I picked-up the load, drove back down the mountain, and then dropped the trailer at our warehouse, Tom was pretty drunk.
It wasn’t too long before Obie had to make the right decision of letting Tom go. Obie realized Tom would eventually hurt someone if he continued to drink and drive and I suppose he knew Tom wasn’t going to put the bottle down anytime soon.
As I think back of those times, Tom certainly wasn’t the only driver I remember as having a strong relation-
ship with “the bottle.” Having had a father that enjoyed his bourbon, it didn’t take long for me to detect a man’s alcohol level by his breath, and there were many times I knew a fellow had been drinking before he uttered his first word.
Far be it from me to know why this was tolerated, but the fact that truck drivers were needed—TRUCK DRIVERS ARE STILL NEEDED—meant that a good interview with the owner could usually guarantee a man a trucking job. Since there were no drug or alcohol tests required at that time, if a man showedup sober for his initial interview, at least that meant that he wasn’t drinking at that moment. Past employer verification only happened if the owner knew the owner the driver used to work for. Phone calls to someone you didn’t know were not of much use, because if the driver (in question) was drunk on his last job, then that owner wouldn’t admit it because he was glad to get rid of him.
After a driver began working, his alcohol content could, most often, be measured by how he performed
his job. If he didn’t call to let Obie know he would not be in, then he was drunk. When he came in to leave on Sunday, if he staggered from his personal vehicle to his tractor, then he was drunk. When he returned from a trip with a damaged tractor or trailer (or both) and he didn’t have a good excuse of the damage, then he was probably drunk. Yes, I know some of you are thinking, “WTF?” but back then, wrecks and damaged vehicles caused by a driver’s alcohol consumption were considered as accidents. I agree that it shouldn’t have taken decades for drunk driving laws to end these views, but to retroactively paraphrase today’s saying, “It Was What It Was!” SP

Firestone Introduces Transforce Tires For Fleets
Bridgestone has announced the debut of the latest Firestone tires, featuring the ENLITEN Technology, the all-new Transforce HT3 and CV2.
Engineered specifically for hardworking commercial highway vehicles, Firestone’s latest fleet tires are designed to deliver wet-weather performance, low-speed refinement, confident high-speed handling and exceptional wear life. Both Transforce HT3 and CV2 maximize wear performance to help improve sustainability over the life of the tire.
The Transforce HT3 and CV2 tires were each created to excel in different facets of the commercial highway tire market. The HT3 tire is for heavyduty trucks while the CV2 tire is for last-mile delivery vans. The hardwearing tires share key commonalities, including construction and tread pattern, while broadening the Transforce line with distinct features like sidewall design and tread compound that benefit their unique use cases.
“Our goal for the Firestone Transforce HT3 and CV2 tires was to create two surefooted commercial highway tires that hold up to the strenuous duties of fleet service while focusing on a quiet and long riding experience,” said Jeremy Norwood, Chief Engineer, Consumer Replacement Product Engineering. “Transforce HT3 and CV2 deliver the performance that fleet managers expect—so much so that they won’t even think about the tire.”
Hardworking HD Trucks
Offered strictly in LT sizing, the Transforce HT3 tire is designed for heavy-duty trucks with a high rim diameter between 16- and 20-inches. It features an off-shoulder sidewall design with noise abatement, making it both quieter and more aggressive in appearance. The Trans-
force HT3 tire’s distinct tread compound emphasizes traction, durability, year-round use and hauling and towing. Additional key engineering features of the Firestone Transforce HT3 tire include:
• Long-Lasting, Reliable Wear: Built with Firestone’s new compound designed to help resist irregular wear, the Transforce HT3 also features a tread pattern reinforced with interlocking 3D sipes to help provide uniform stiffness and resiliency that fights irregular wear, even when loaded.
• Dependable Wet Traction: Avoid the added stress of hauling heavy loads in the rain. Transforce HT3 features open shoulder slots and a high see-through void to accelerate water evacuation from the pattern and improve wet
performance, even when loaded.
Long-Lasting Last Mile Delivery
Offered in EURO-C and LT sizing, the Transforce CV2 tire is more highway focused and engineered specifically for last-mile delivery vehicles. It includes a sidewall defense rib for added durability and chip-tear resistance and its lowered shoulder-slot angle improves snow traction. The Transforce CV2 tire delivers extended wear life as one of its key objectives.
Additional key engineering features of the Firestone Transforce CV2 tire include:
• Long-Lasting, Reliable Treadwear: The Transforce CV2 features Firestone’s long-wearing compound plus a tread pattern
purpose-built to resist irregular wear. Strategically placed interlocking sipes help ensure uniform tread stiffness and resiliency throughout the pattern.
• Reinforced Sidewall Durability: Feel confident getting a little closer to that curb. The Transforce CV2 features a sidewall defense rib designed for added durability and chip-tear resistance.
• Wet and Winter Traction: An open shoulder design and high see-through void help accelerate water away from the tread pattern for confident wet performance. Interlocking sipes help add dependable winter traction because the work ahead doesn’t stop for the forecast.

The Michigan Department of Transportation has announced restrictions for hauling of Class 3 and 8 dangerous goods at the Ambassador Bridge Windsor/Detroit, will be removed effective October 29, 2024.
Under the new rules, the restricted materials will only be allowed to be transported across the bridge during off-peak hours and under the supervision of vehicle escorts.
The decision comes after multiple requests by the Ambassador Bridge to remove these longstanding restrictions, the completion of a technical study by MDOT, and months of consultations with various stakeholders, including the OTA, which supported the removal of all restrictions
on Class 3 and 8 dangerous goods, with the goal of aligning the policy with all major ports of entry at the Canada-U.S. border.

Utility Trailer, Cargobull North America Unveil New Liftgate Battery Charger
Utility Trailer Manufacturing Company LLC is excited to unveil and announce its new Cargobull Liftgate Battery Charger as an integrated option with Cargobull 625 and 655MT Hybrid TRUs (transport refrigeration units).
The Cargobull Liftgate Battery Charger is available exclusively on Utility’s 3000R refrigerated trailers with Cargobull’s ultra-lowemission TRUs.
The Cargobull Liftgate Battery Charger helps keep trailers’ liftgate batteries topped off and in optimum charge condition. The device takes 480 volts of electrical
energy from the Cargobull 625 or 655MT Hydrid TRU to provide liftgate batteries low-voltage charging with a maximum output of 40 amps or 480 watts of power.
The new liftgate battery charging system is entirely separate from the charger that maintains the Cargobull 625 and 655MT Hybrid TRUs’ starting battery.
The Failure Tree
This is made from driveline parts that have been broken under different circumstances and in different size vehicles.
Willock Truck Equipment Co. Ltd. of Vancouver obtained these parts from their driveline service repair shop. They handle all repair problems as illustrated by the parts that make up the Failure Tree. These parts are — tubing, yokes, splines, and cross and bearings. Some have twisted, snapped, exploded and some are just worn out. Have you checked your driveline lately? SP
Conveniently located close to the liftgate battery pack, the Cargobull Liftgate Battery Charger routes 480 volts through a high-quality conduit to protect the cable from normal wear and tear.
“During delivery routes requiring a dozen or more operations of the liftgate, keeping batteries fully charged can greatly increase the serviceable life of the liftgate battery, especially if they also provide power to interior and exterior lights,” Steve Bennett, Utility Trailer President and COO, said. “Consistently running batteries down to low levels dramatically reduces their lifespan. For example, from
what could be as low as a six-month lifespan, this system can double—if not quadruple—the battery’s service life.”
Historically, truck cabs provide the power to recharge liftgate batteries. In real-world operation, however, drivers often don’t connect the two-pole connector from the truck, or fleets lease trucks that don’t include them. When drivers do use their truck connectors, the voltage from the truck alternator can be as low as 13.5 volts by the time it reaches the liftgate battery pack.

Eaton Introduces 48-Volt
DC/DC Converter Designed For Harsh Environments
Intelligent power management company Eaton has announced it is now offering a higher power version of its low-voltage 48-volt DC/DC converter for commercial and off-highway vehicles that is designed to withstand the harsh environments in which those vehicles operate.
“Our new converter has up to 40 amps of output current capacity and can be installed on the vehicle in areas that are subject to very harsh conditions, including frame rails, battery and engine compartments,” stated Ben Karrer, Head of engineering, Low Voltage and Power Conversion, Eaton’s Mobility Group.
“These are environmental extremes with adverse conditions, shock and vibration that require robust protection features,” Karrer continued. “This unit is the ideal solution for manufacturers that require a dependable method to manage the higher power loads of modern commercial and off-highway vehicles.”
Eaton’s DC/DC converter takes power from a 48-volt system and steps it down to 12 volts to run accessories and other low-power systems. This design helps essential equipment—including antilock brakes and power steering—work even in the case of a power failure, making it unique among product offerings in this space.
There is a growing demand for 48-volt DC/DC
cluding solar cells and other costly solutions, which bring new challenges and limit success. The cost of a new liftgate battery isn’t substantial, but the inconvenience and cost of scheduling a service call is a real issue for many fleet operators,” Bennett said. “While other manufacturers may offer a TRU charging system, their battery chargers are located inside the TRU. Placing the Cargobull Liftgate Battery Charger near the liftgate battery pack is a unique and innovative differentiator that
helps provide batteries a more consistent voltage and allows the solid-state charger to accurately monitor battery temperatures for fast charging without overheating.”
The all-new Cargobull Liftgate Battery Charger is now exclusively available on Utility 3000R reefers featuring Cargobull 625 and 655MT Hybrid TRUs at sales and service centers throughout the Utility Trailer dealer network. SP

converters as off-highway and commercial vehicle manufacturers increasingly switch to dual-voltage electrical architectures. Eaton’s converters feature a natural convection, air-cooled design for ease of integration and can operate at ambient temperatures up to 85 degrees Celsius. Additionally, the converters are designed with high efficiency to prevent power loss over a wide operating range.
The converters are also designed to reduce weight and save space. Most modern vehicles operate on 12-volts or 24-volts, so moving up to 48-volts results in up to four times the voltage, which decreases the electrical current by the same ratio. Because wire size is chosen based on the amount of electrical current, decreasing the current allows for the use of smaller wires, which reduces weight and helps alleviate packaging concerns.
Eaton’s DC/DC converter portfolio provides flexibility through multiple power and voltage levels and can be optimized to work seamlessly with a manufacturer’s charging system specifications. It also features a Controller Area Network (CAN) bus, which allows direct communication from the DC/DC converter to other vehicle electronic control units to transmit diagnostic information. SP

Ballard Launches Latest Fuel Cell Engine For Heavy-Duty Vehicles
Ballard Power Systems has unveiled its 9th generation, high-performance fuel cell engine, the FCmove-XD, at the ACT Expo in Las Vegas in May .
“We are laser focused on strengthening the economic value proposition for heavy-dutyBallard FCmove XD mobility customers,” said Mircea Gradu, Ballard’s Chief Engineering Officer. “With the unveiling of our 9th generation of fuel cell engine – the FCmove-XD – we continue to push the boundaries and are once again raising the bar and re-setting the industry standard for PEM fuel cell engine performance. Our innovative FCmove-XD delivers significant improvements in reliability, durability, efficiency, power density, scalability, serviceability, and total cost of ownership.”
The FCmove-XD delivers the highest volumetric power density in the industry for heavy-duty applications, featuring an engine volumetric power density
of 0.36 kW/L and gravimetric power density of 0.48 kW/kg. The scalable 120 kW fuel cell engine integrates DC/DC regulated output, enabling up to three modules to operate as one system with a single interface, capable of delivering a combined 360 kW of zero-emission power output.
With a design life of 30,000+ hours of operation - or over one million miles in truck operation at typical duty cycles - the FCmoveXD engine is developed to deliver class-leading durability and low total cost of ownership.
Enabled by an innovative “open architecture” design and other new design advances, the powerful and compact FCmove-XD enables several important performance improvements (as compared to our
prior-generation engine), including:
• 120 kW power output from our latest high-performance single stack;
• 33% reduction in total parts count, significantly improving reliability and reducing costs;
• Ultra-high peak system efficiency at >60%, enabling improved fuel consumption (lower total cost of ownership) and efficient heat rejection;
• Wide operating temperature range, up to 95°C;
• Integrated power controller incorporates DC/ DC converter, air compressor inverter, and a power distribution unit, along with proprietary software controls, enables improved engine operation and efficiency;
• Rapid up and down transient times, with an innovative hot stand-by mode
enabling rapid power increase;
• Improved manufacturability with >50% assembly time reduction;
• Easier access to parts for faster and lower-cost field maintenance;
• Compliance with applicable safety codes and standards;
“The power and performance requirements of the highly-segmented truck market are particularly demanding due to various use cases, including high vehicle utilization rates and payload requirements,” said Silvano Pozzi, Vice President, Product Line Management. “One of the compelling features of our new FCmove-XD is scalability based on modularity. We can offer customers efficient integration of 120 kW, 240 kW, and 360 kW solutions dependent on truck class, use case, and duty cycle. For example, two engines, totalling 240 kW of power output, can be easily installed in the engine compartment of a typical Class 8 heavy-duty truck, enhancing standardization and redundancy.”
Mr. Gradu concluded,
“In addition to our in-house FCmove-XD innovations and design improvements over the past 3 years, we have enjoyed strong collaboration with our maturing supply chain on new balance of plant component designs and related non-recurring engineering, and we also made important investments in certain production tooling. Collectively, these integrated and parallel work streams have resulted in a category leader, boasting higher performance on all key metrics with significantly lower cap-
ital cost and operating costs for customers and end users. Initial pre-launch customer engagement has been very exciting.”
Ballard plans to initially manufacture the FCmoveXD at its Oregon facility, enabling “Buy America” compliance starting in 2025, with future high-volume manufacturing expected at Ballard Rockwall Giga 1, Ballard’s recently announced 3 gigawatt Gigafactory planned to be built in Rockwall, Texas. SP
