CSIF BECAME INVOLVED AFTER SEEING FIRST - HAND THE DEVASTATION THE DERECHO CAUSED ON FARMS. IT TORE INTO LIVESTOCK FARMS, LEAVING GRAIN BINS, LIVESTOCK BARNS, MACHINE SHEDS, HOMES + WINDBREAKS IN SHAMBLES. THE CSIF WINDBREAK GRANT PROGRAM IS A NATURAL FIT FOR US THROUGH OUR GREEN FARMSTEAD PARTNER (GFP) PROGRAM WHICH ENCOURAGES LIVESTOCK FARMERS TO PLANT TREES AROUND LIVESTOCK + POULTRY BARNS. ABOUT US CSIF is a non-profit, non-lobbying organization that assists livestock farmers who want help interpreting rules + regulations, guidance on identifying good site locations for barns, counsel on enhancing neighbor relations + tips on how to protect the environment at no cost. This positive, solutions-based approach to helping livestock farmers grow is a collaborative effort involving the Iowa Beef Industry Council, Iowa Cattlemen’s Association, Iowa Corn Growers Association, Iowa Farm Bureau, Iowa Pork Producers Association, Iowa Poultry Association, Iowa Soybean Association, Iowa Turkey Federation + Midwest Dairy.

DERECHO WINDBREAK GRANT PROGRAM As a friend of agriculture, you understand the enormous impact of the August 10th derecho that wreaked havoc across Iowa and decimated generations of farm families. Steel buildings collapsed, crops were flattened, livestock buildings were split in two, and precious windbreaks were shredded. Farmers are no strangers to adversity; however, rebuilding in a pandemic year - on top of years of challenging markets - is proving to be a seismic lift. You can help make a difference for Iowa livestock farmers. The Coalition to Support Iowa’s Farmers (CSIF), a positive, solutions-based approach to help livestock farmers successfully and responsibly grow or start their farm, launched the CSIF Derecho Windbreak Grant Program to help livestock and poultry farmers repair or replace windbreaks around their livestock buildings damaged by the derecho. CSIF became involved after seeing firsthand the devastation the derecho caused on farms. The CSIF Derecho Windbreak Grant Program is a natural fit for CSIF through our Green Farmstead Partner (GFP) program. The GFP program was created in 2009 to provide livestock farmers with help to establish tree and shrub plantings specifically designed for livestock farms. Through a unique partnership with the Iowa Nursery and Landscape Association and Trees Forever, the program offers the expertise of 28 nursery professionals around the state. Research shows planting rows of shrubs and trees on livestock farms serve as a natural filtration system for odors, helps conserve energy, provides additional shade in the summer and protection from snow and improves neighbor relations. Your donation will assist Iowa livestock farmers in repairing and refurbishing windbreaks that were damaged or destroyed during the derecho. CAMPAIGN BACKGROUND

Iowa counties included in the derecho disaster assistance are: Adair, Audubon, Benton, Black Hawk, Boone, Buchanan, Calhoun, Carroll, Cass, Cedar, Clarke, Clinton, Dallas, Delaware, Dubuque, Greene, Grundy, Guthrie, Hamilton, Hardin, Iowa, Jackson, Jasper, Johnson, Jones, Keokuk, Linn, Louisa, Madison, Mahaska, Marion, Marshall, Muscatine, Polk, Poweshiek, Sac, Scott, Story, Tama, Warren, Washington + Webster.

REQUIREMENTS MUST HAVE

Must have livestock or poultry on the farm that sustained damage to the windbreak or grove of trees.

Does not apply to windbreaks around homesteads - trees must be around livestock barns + feedlots.
