ROOM VEHICLE CHANGES PROGRAM ADJACENY TRACK DRIVEN Bata’s head office stand, appropriately, in the center of Zlin (Fordian Planned Development). Situated at the south-western corner of the tower is a vertical shaft housing a 3x3m el-

evator car. The car was designed as a mobile office, complete with desk and phone. Designed for Tomas Bata the company’s owner, as a mode of surveiling the work of employees.

SLIDING SKIN THE SLIDING HOUSE

Architect Alex de Rijke stated that “[this project is] about degrees of shelter, responding to weather, season and site characteristics.” The result is a moving skin, powered by 4 electric 12-volt car batteries, that slides along tracks that run parallel to the base structure. It takes approximately 6 minutes to move along its trajectory, and in this time, spaces change from inside to out, opaque to transparent. John Graham_ 1962_ Seattle, WA A 14-foot ring that originally housed “The Eye of the Needle” restaurant rotates at 360 degrees per hour. The track and wheel system that moves the restaurant weighs approximately 125 tons.

The “Eye of the Needle” was the second revolving restaurant built in the US, and spawned a nationwide craze in cities all over the country. The restaurant was built 600 feet in the air, atop the Seattle Space Needle. It’s revolution is powered by a 1.5 horsepower motor, which rotates a turntable attached to a track and wheel system (modeled after railroad technology). It revolves 360 degrees/hour. NEW TAIPEI CITY MUSEUM OF ART

PA Studio has developed a proposal for a gallery space where the galleries move around the building instead of the people moving around to the galleries. The interior of the cube shaped building has an open floor plan, so the horizontal and vertical moving gallery boxes can be seen from all levels. The tracks are exposed and show the paths of motion.
