01 . Arts, Media & Engineering - Stauffer Hall Fall- 2015 Instructor: Kasey Josephs ASU Campus, Tempe Architectural Style: Pre-cast Concrete Panels, Dry- Wall Context: Educational/ Institutional

3|4

Function Stauffer hall is a multi- disciplinary institute catering to 6 other schools located on campus acting as cohabitated courtyard for the different programs in wing-B and all official programs being accomodated in wing-A. The access to wing-A, Forest Avenue also acts as a courtyard in program bringing in a confluence of functions and inter-personal interaction for users. Issue The building happens to have a static, uninviting facade while the programs are unevenly distributed in plan which mars a heirarchial structure. The building also lacks spaces for interaction amongst users. The facade also does not recognize with the surrounding contemporary structures such as the COOR Hall.

Study Model

Brise Soleil Concept Solar Study 5|6

The design of the Brise Soliel corresponded to the mathematically calculated values for different hours of the day and an average of different values for each solstice.

East Facade

The solution began with identifying the spaces to be enlarged and program relocation and addition and was followed with the amalgamation of the designed Brise Soliel so to create habitable spaces along the facade.

The resulting design made for energy savings to a 50% approximately as analyzed upon Revit due to reduction in artificial lighting during the day, reduced heating/ cooling loads and efficient distribution of prospective HVAC design.

02. Case Study - John Deere Headquarters Mouline, Illionois Fall- 2015 Architectural Style: Steel Instructor: Kasey Josephs

11 | 12

John Deere Headquarters, located in Mouline, Illionois; designed by Eero Saarinen beautifully sit amidst a lush green surrounding with rare occassion of harsh sun making its way through. Therefore the facade is uniformally shaded on all four sides with a metal Brise Soleil. The Exercise focussed on analyzing the structural and spatial tectonics of the building through dissection by means of analytique drawing and physical study model of a 1/2”= 1’-0” scale built in bass wood. The construction of model was highly conducive in understanding the stability and connections of the structure. Longitudnal Part- Section Analytique Section through the building

The site is located at the periphery of ASU Downtown campus, essentially facing north and Walter Cronkite School of Journalism to the south which physically castes shadow onto the site. The east and west are considerably exposed to sun both in terms of direct radiation and global irradiation and thus require optimum shading on both surfaces as also on the north.

FACADE DETAIL AND IRRADIANCE ANALYSIS INSULATED GLASS PANEL

STEEL BRACKETS

The diagram shows maximum shading around the sections that are the most thick or are parallel to the horizontal . The portion in green is the opaque part of the facade system comprising of the metal insulated panels which are optimizing the shading pattern while also successfully reflecting nearly 50% of the incident radiation ( global + radiant ). The portion in red is the most illuminant with nearly 60 - 70% variation in illuminance levels. Another important revelation is of the panels on the top two levels of the building with excessive illuminanace levels which can possibly be overcome with alternation in materials and angles.

ADAPTIVE REUSE IN INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE - TEMPE HARDWARE BUILDING Built: 1898 Architectural Style: Panel Brick Commercial Architect : James Creighton Built Area: 14000sqft Storeys: 3 Context: Commercial/ Tourism - Retail Development

37 | 38

HISTORY The Tempe Hardware Building was originally built as the Odd Fellows Hall in 1898. The building has also served as home to a variety of fraternal organizations, churches and civic groups, in addition to a number of businesses. The Tempe Town Council met in the building, prior to construction of the first Town Hall in 1924. The Tempe Hardware Co. occupied the ground floor from 1906 until it closed in 1976,making it one of the oldest continuously operated businesses in Tempe history.

LOCATION The site is located on MIll Avenue, a distinct commercial district situated in Downtown, Tempe.

39 | 40

FOUND OBJECT The concept derived from an exercise of “Found Object wherein an antique cup was facilitated physically to exhibit its preservation by creating a enclosure for the same. The Design then evolved as reinforcing the existing structure such that the earlier exercise turned inside out and the exterior/facde of the historic building was preserved.

Water is to Venice as Sun is to Phoenix Goals Enrich the site with colors and textures through shading while conveying the experience of the city with areas of compression and large open plazas Concept Cultural contexts coincide between the movement of the Venetian canals and the sunlight of the Phoenician desert , redefining the use of public spaces and the movement through them. High Contrast Elements: water vs sun Approach: transport vs shelter Location: below vs above Placement: ground vs canopy Materiality: fixed structure vs versatile rope Function: sedentary furniture vs passage way Optimization: light vs shade
