Angus
7 reasons to choose Angus A ngus are rapidly becoming the most widespread and keenly sought after temperate beef breed in the world. This expansion is due to the greater profitability which can be achieved using Angus. Here are some of the reasons why beef producers are choosing Angus:
1. Market Demand Both domestic and export markets currently pay a premium for Angus cattle. Feedlots targeting the high quality Japanese and Korean markets prefer Angus because of their growth and marbling ability. Several feedlots in Australia feed almost exclusively Angus cattle for the long-fed Japanese B3 market. Angus weaners are also in high demand by re-stockers for pasture finishing programs, targeting a wide Page 8.
range of markets from domestic steers to heavy grass-fed export bullocks.
2. Market Versatility
Angus are well known for their tremendous market versatility. They have the ability to grow to heavy market weights quickly without becoming over fat. They also have the ability to finish at lighter weights, if desired. Angus have excellent carcase quality, high muscling and moderate maturity patterns providing maximum market versatility.
3. Superior Fertility and Maternal Ability Angus females reach puberty early, go in calf quickly and continue to breed regularly to a late age. Angus have a reputation for maintaining
high fertility even under difficult seasonal conditions. Angus cows are excellent mothers with good milking ability. They are easy calving, easy care cattle.
4. Meat Quality Angus are known throughout the world for their ability to consistently produce the finest high quality beef. Straight bred and crossbred Angus steers are keenly sought after for pasture and feedlot finishing programs to target high quality beef markets. The superior meat quality of Angus cattle comes from their ability to lay down intra-muscular marbling (taste) fat during the finishing phase, together with excellent tenderness, texture, flavour, meat colour and fat colour. work in the heat, are capable of storing energy quickly as body fat when seasons permit and will not fall in a heap after calving but rather rebreed within two months post partum.”
This year’s draft of Angus bulls are consistent in displaying Hazeldean’s well known traits of calving ease, fertility, growth and carcase quality. There will be sons of prominent industry proven AI sires including 10 sons each of Matauri Reality, SAV Thunderbird and Rennylea Edmund, as well as Docklands, Sydgen Trust, Hazeldean Harlequin amongst others, and sons of the latest young sires coming through the Hazeldean program.
“Hazeldean Angus are renowned for their high fertility and we continue to select sires with high fertility EBV’s” says Mr. Litchfield.
Jim Litchfield says that when selecting the Queensland team he places emphasis on the traits that are important to producers in the north, and avoided characteristics that although suitable to some southern production systems, were often a negative under northern scenarios.
“Selection pressure on females to breed a live calf every year is strict and any female who fails to do so for whatever reason is “out”. Duncan McLeod from MAA Roma, who are sole agents this year, has inspected the bulls and is happy to chat to you so give him a call: 0428 225 727 or Jim Litchfield 0417 676 561www.hazeldean.com.au
“Concentrating on high 600 day growth and high fertility traits on a mobile, easy walking frame with a fine skin and hair type is the sort of animal we select for the north,” he said. Mr Litchfield also said that the stud avoided animals with excessively high milk, ‘wiry’ or long hair, extreme negative fat depth EBVs and poor mobility.

5. Hardiness and Efficiency Angus are found in all areas of Australia from the high altitudes of the Monaro, with cold temperatures and variable seasons to the boggy conditions experienced during wet winters in Gippsland, Victoria. of highly fertile, productive females and high quality carcases suited to a wide range of markets. Angus are used in crossbreeding programs for their maternal ability, market value,
Angus cattle are bred on every continent in the world. The large number of Angus animals provides an immense pool of available genetics that allows the breed to
respond to new challenges and commercial demands. Australian Angus breeders have successfully utilised bloodlines from many countries. Performance recording identifies high performing animals in Australian production systems that are then used widely through artificial breeding providing commercial breeders with bulls to meet market demand.

Over 87% of the genetic composition of a drop of calves is influenced by the sire selection over the last three generations. Many of these sales are conducted by regional or state Angus groups so cattle are high quality inspected females of known reproductive status. The list can also be obtained through the Angus Society Office. Both yearling and two year old ready to work Angus bulls are readily available. Over 135 bull sales are held annually. Details of many of these are available on the Angus Australia website. The general quality of genetic packages offered by Australian Angus bulls continues to improve.

bull over your existing cow herd each year. During the transition you will be breeding productive cross-bred cattle with Angus attributes. These calves will be highly marketable. Angus Australia will accept cattle that are 7/8 Angus or better as “straightbred”. Starting with a cow herd of a breed other than Angus, after the second backcross to Angus the progeny will have on average 7/8 of their genes from the Angus breed.
Be particularly careful to select bulls that suit your environment, your target market, and your cow herd such as increased conception rate, weaning rate, and weights of calves. In some situations cross breeding can be used to maintain a certain breed mix to make use of adapted genetics which are needed for certain environments. A good example of this is the use of Bos
Indicus X Angus cross cattle in northern Australia. You will need to decide whether you breed or purchase your replacement females. You should consider paddock availability, your time, and your attitude towards disease risks.
Crossbreeding with Angus
Crossbreeding with Angus is used in grading up, to reduce calving problems, and increase meat quality and market demand. Colour uniformity, pigmentation, and polledness are other benefits. Because they have a balance of maternal, production and carcase traits, Angus can be successfully used in any crossbreeding program. Hybrid vigour will have effects Angus bulls.

Benefits of Infusing Angus Genetics into Northern Australian Beef Herds
Market flexibility
A
ngus Australia has surveyed producers in northern Australia to increase the understanding of the benefits of infusing Angus genetics into their beef herds. This research, conducted in 2013, involved interviews with over 60 commercial or seedstock producers
either running or supplying bulls into northern Australia. Responses from producers interviewed in this research confirm that using Angus genetics in northern beef herds can have many benefits, and that Angus bulls can be run successfully in most areas of northern Australia if some simple management practices are
adopted. The main benefits of incorporating Angus genetics into northern Australian beef herds included improved marketability of stock, hybrid vigour, enhanced female fertility and the introduction of To Page 16

Hybrid Vigour: Incorporating Angus genetics resulted in benefits through hybrid vigour among crossbred calves and replacement females, as well as combining positive attributes of both Bos taurus and Bos indicus genetics. It was reported that the expression of hybrid vigour decreased the age at which progeny are finished. This enhanced the chances of obtaining premiums associated with MSA grading by ensuring that bullocks were above 500 kilograms live weight with milk or 2 teeth. Crossbred females with Angus content were reported as being more fertile and having superior milk production compared to Bos indicus derived females. Polledness: One of the benefits associated with the use of Angus bulls is that the majority of their progeny will be polled. While the polled gene is dominant, the African To Page 17

They were easier to finish, with good muscling, more marbling, better tenderness and highest MSA meat quality scores.
Your word... Grant Brooks, Marble Bar WA says: “We bought Limestone Station in 1997. The station encircles the town of Marble Bar which has the reputation as being Australia’s hottest town. The temperatures are always in the forties through summer, autumn and spring. We have cyclonic rains and rivers that flood through the wet season and sometimes drought. Our Angus cattle thrive in these conditions and we get premium demand for them from our live export buyers”. Dan and Lachlan Lynch, Cloncurry Qld: “I have been very impressed with the success of our Angus cross cattle. We achieved 79% polled cattle at branding time with the rest of the animals being scurred. Absolutely no horn was present. Another advantage has been when weaned the Angus cross animals averaged 22kg heavier than their Brahman brothers and sisters. The same trend was evident at 400 days with the Angus weighing in 41 kg heavier. I believe these animals have been handling our harsh northern environment incredibly well and certainly at this stage outperforming the purebred Brahmans.”

iven the tough conditions Queensland farmers have had to battle over the past few years, it is now more imperative than ever for cattle farmers to ensure they are breeding resilient and hardy livestock. According to North Yarrawonga Station owner David Sargood, when it comes to resilience and ensuring the best possible value for money, Angus Bulls are the answer. “The Angus breed is extremely fertile and we feel they hold up great in western conditions,” Mr Sargood said. “They have a lower birth weight and are extremely versatile from a weaner through to a bullock. “We are really happy with them, they are great value for money and we find having an Angus cross the most beneficial for us, a cross such as Brangus or the like.” Mr Sargood purchased his first

Bazadaise
Exceptional breeding qualities
T
he Bazadaise breed of cattle have the qualities necessary to produce one calf per year. They are easy calving which is understandable because the mothers have a good broad pelvis and a low birth weight for the calves. They are also renowned for their grass finishing ability, mobility, hardiness and strong muscular development. The Bazadaise beef cattle breed does have a considerable advantage of combining a quality carcase of succulent meat, with an excellent feed conversion ability and resistance to extreme conditions. Its efficient food conversion rate derives from the harsh nature from which the breed had its birth, having to make the most of what was available. Because of the difficult conditions it has experienced throughout its long history the Bazadaise cattle breed have developed a true robustness.
Qualities of Hardiness
● adapts to all types of conditions ● good converter of rough fodder ● natural resistance to parasites ● adapts very well to rough country ● vigour and adaptive traits ● athletic and mobile
Exceptional Breeding Qualities ● improvement of growth potential ● strong muscular development ● substantial meat yield ● high fertility ● very good mothers ● easy calving ● intelligent and easy to handle
The Bazadaise beef cattle breed offers great potential as an economical producer of high quality beef. Its extraordinary versatility makes it an impressive beast that can adapt to almost every production system. Thanks to its physical soundness, fattening ability, high return carcase weight and finely textured low cholesterol tender meat, the Bazadaise cattle breed can be considered to have outstanding characteristics that give confidence in its future. he Bazadaise breed of cattle provide an exceptional combination of high muscling and ability to marble off grass. This is the foundation of the Bazadaise breeds outstanding carcase characteristics. The fine conformation and quality of the carcase lead to high levels of meat production meaning more meat and less waste. Indeed the carcase quality and excellent flavour of the Bazadaise breeds meat is confirmed by butchers and consumers. Butchers value the very high meat production that the Bazadaise produces and are happy to be able to offer their clients meat of excellent eating quality with respect to its tenderness, fine grain, juiciness with at the same time, an even coverage of fat.
WHY BUTCHER’S LOVE BAZADAISE
✔ Heavy carcase ✔ A high % of saleable meat ✔ Fine boned ✔ Well muscled ✔ Tender and tasty meat ✔ Maximum eye muscle area Used in cross breeding, the Bazadaise breed of cattle possesses great qualities to allow the producer to achieve optimum results. The strong genetic traits of the Bazadaise cattle breed bring about an improved confirmation, exceptional length, increased weight gain and higher carcase evaluations. Bazadaise bulls are proving that they leave their stamp on the product they produce with a well developed hind quarter and thickness throughout. The growth impetus given produces profitable, high growth offspring and a high quality, high yielding carcase.

Belmont Red
Why use Belmont Reds? A s a sire breed, the tropically adapted Belmont Red has a unique advantage over British, European and Bos Indicus breeds for use in crossbreeding. Belmont Reds possess all of the production and beef quality traits of the British and European Bos Taurus breeds, with the added benefits of superior adaptation traits including tick and parasite resistance, heat tolerance and drought resistance, combined with calving ease and small birth weight calves. Belmont Reds have adaptation traits equal to the Bos Indicus breeds, with the added advantage of very high fertility including early sexual maturity in both males and females with females able to reconceive at low weights and whilst lactating, in conjunction with the Belmont Reds superior carcass qualities and renowned docile temperament. Belmont Red cow and calf. Page 22.
BELMONT RED
The Belmont Red Objective
A
t its inception the objective for the Belmont Red breed was to blend an average of the genes from the Africander and from the British breeds Shorthorn and Hereford. Adaptive traits such as, tick and fly resistance, disease resistance, heat tolerance and hardiness, as well as meat quality traits, fertility and easy calving were inherited from the Africander. Productive traits, such as fertility and growth, as well as carcase and meat quality were also inherited from the British. Genetically the Africander component distinguishes the Belmont from other Composite breeds based on the Brahman such as Santa Gertrudis, Droughtmaster, Brangus, Charbray and Braford. The herd book remains open and grading up to pure Belmont Red can simply be accomplished in three back crosses. The Belmont can therefore be established by simply grading up from any base cow herd through three generations of mating to registered Belmont bulls, the fourth crop being registerable as pure
Belmont Red cow and calf.
Belmont Reds. This allows the Belmont Breeders to tap into a broad genetic pool and retain desirable gene combinations from the parent breeds. With the correct selection programs, the productive desirable gene combinations can be accumulated and fixed. The range and combinations of established breeds included in the Belmont Red provides it with all the desirable traits of the British, European and other Tropical breeds. In Australia the Belmont Red is the only Composite breed that has been developed from crossing the Africander breed with British breeds. Belmont Reds are a tropically
adapted Bos Taurus. The Belmont Breed Society has based its standards on productive and adaptive traits that can be objectively measured and are known to be heritable. Selection is therefore based on accurate measurements of traits that are heritable and economically important in terms of beef production. Any Belmont animal must therefore be reared in a herd which has adopted a system of performance recording, such as Breedplan. The Belmont Red is about a philosophy of breeding highly productive, low input cost cattle, that are adapted to their environment.
The herd book remains open and grading up to pure Belmont Red can simply be accomplished in three back crosses.

The introduction of Bonsmara into Australia
T
he very first introduction to Bonsmara cattle in South Africa came in 1984 when I travelled as tour leader with a group of Belmont Red breeders and other invited cattlemen to see the breed which had been developed similarly; although previously, to our CSIRO developed Belmont Red and also inspect the comparisons with the Belmont Red/Bonsmara cattle bred with BR semen provided by co-operators in Australia (Belmont Research Station, Tremere and Mt Eugene) for use in the project. Other cattle breeds of interest to all our group were also included in the tour. The hospitality and camaraderie of the R.S.A cattlemen made the trip a huge success, and impressed upon us the necessity to import some of the livestock to Australia in spite of the ban on imports due to the threat of Foot and Mouth disease which was endemic in R.S.A.This reality had to be accepted and the path for importations would prove to be long, slow and expensive. Firstly the protocol had to be established to allow importation from a Foot and Mouth disease endemic country. To Page 25

Russian Antinov aircraft, out of Cocos Island, into Melbourne and Rockhampton. As one of the participants tritely described the following months and years of embryo selection, implant, success and failure, “I wouldn’t have missed
it for quids, and there were plenty of them!” There were enough successes to establish the Boran and Tuli breeds and even more importantly, for us, this event opened the door for the first importation of Bonsmaras in a joint venture organised by Swin Hudson, between Tremere Pastoral and Arthur de Villiers and Son, one of the leading Bonsmara breeders in South Africa. The ambition has been completed. The surrogate dams commenced calving – Then another disaster! Pestivirus. A disease, which has not been a major problem in calving cattle in Central Qld previously, spread through many herds and many breeds. Calves premature through to full term twins were still born. It was totally unexpected and prompted the development of a vaccine which we have today; but it reduced our numbers dramatically. The survivors were gratefully received and so the Bonsmara breed had arrived from Africa. More embryos entered from the USA, and the gene pool expanded. It was a final success which none of us would have missed for quids. Article by Morton Hudson
From Page 24
The opportunity to get started came in 1992, when CSIRO called for co-operators to financially assist the importation of Boran and Tuli embryos from South Africa which culminated in Boran and Tuli weaners being discharged from a

About Bonsmara
onsmara are a tropically adapted Bos taurus breed. Performance recording is the cornerstone of their development. They are the dominant breed in South Africa, where some 60,000 registered females are currently being performance recorded with the commercial and seedstock herds, adding to around 4 million head. Some 400 Bonsmara embryos were first imported into Australia in 1998 from the Republic of South Africa, followed by semen from the USA.The Bonsmara Cattle Breeders Society of Australia (BCBS of A) was formed in 2000, and there are now over 3000 Bonsmara infused cattle in the country.
FAST FACT…
The Bonsmara is a breed of cattle known for its high quality beef. Originating in South Africa as a scientific experiment of professor Jan Bonsma, the Bonsmara was created after many cross matings and back-crosses consisting of five-eighths Afrikaner, three-sixteenths Hereford, and threesixteenths Shorthorn.

Braford Society. It was a time to reflect and thank the pioneers of our breed for their determination and dedication and also a time to look forward, set goals and expand. Brafords are bred to withstand the harshest seasons while remaining fertile and functional. Backed by feed efficiency data and meat quality awards, the modern Braford has a great deal to be proud of and the ability to enhance any straight or crossbreeding program.

rafords are a real Australian success story, first developed in 1946 when Brahman genetics were introduced into a Hereford herd in Central Queensland to combat the staggering losses caused by cattle tick and eye cancer. In 1962 a group of visionary cattlemen met in Rockhampton with the intention of forming an organisation to represent Braford cattle breeders. The Australian Braford Society was formed and has continued to

raford cattle are bred to withstand the diverse Australian climate, with resilience and versatility to perform under tough conditions. Affordable genetics that will enhance any breeding program, with mothering excellence and ease of calving, to turn off top weight weaners. Commercial beef producers should consider Brafords for their crossbreeding programs. Crossbred Braford cattle have proven themselves in the commercial market and feedlot environments. Crossing Braford bulls with your current female herd enhances the advantage of hybrid vigour. Smaller calves ensure trouble free births in commercial operations and the Braford cross hybrid vigour ensures above average growth performance.
The end product meets all the requirements for a vast range of markets and tremendous weight for age. Adaptability and versatility from the snow to the desert have been proven with Brafords and their
crossbred counterparts. Take advantage of hybrid vigour, increased animal fitness, fertility and carcase traits.
TESTIMONIALS
Russell and Helen Whiteman looked for a breed of cattle that would withstand tougher conditions but still finish well for their target EU market. They believe Braford cattle have just the right amount of Bos Indicus genetics to easily handle tough season but still enough British blood to be welcomed by the meatworks. “We find the Braford-cross cattle are well liked by the meatworks. We aren’t too scientific about the way we breed – we just try to keep a Braford base.” Russell Whiteman, Rolleston, Queensland.

“They consistently earn a 20 per cent price premium above ordinary Japanese ox grades and usually do this as milk or two-tooths. We would not change from the breed while we can get the high-quality Brafords.” Radke Family, McEuen, Queensland. The McConachy’s Braford based herd has continually proven itself against other breeds in terms of handling tough conditions and producing progeny that turn-off early. “We have no plans to make major changes to our breeding herd – the Brahman/Braford-cross has worked well for us for many years, so we are happy to keep using them.” Bob McConachy, Cloncurry, Queensland. The journey of life’s experiences has taught Kevin Esmond the value of cattle that perform consistently well and return a good profit edge, so it’s no surprise he’s a Braford fan through and through. “I was a great Hereford man when I took over from Dad, but now find that we get more

Using Red Angus bulls over our Braford females have given us heavier weaners, with great body shape that are highly sort after in the local markets. The Brafords work our steeper country better than other breeds allowing more cattle to run on our property. AUSTRALIAN BRAFORDS
Australian Braford cattle were developed by cattlemen and women who faced many challenges to their livelihoods. Only major changes to traditional beliefs and practices would guarantee their long term survival. With continual drought and cattle ticks affecting the industry at the that time, the answer was to breed cattle that could cope better with both. Necessity provided the motivation, while initiative and perseverance ultimately produced the solution. Against a lot of opposition the birth of the Braford Breed came about over 50 years ago.

Victoria. These cattle can live and not only that but thrive in almost any climate. Do pure breed and cross breed steers and heifers finish well on grass and grain feeding? Given the right conditions Braford cattle will finish well on grass alone. They also have proven time and time again in feedlot competitions that they finish extremely well on grain. Are Braford cattle polled / horned or both? Braford cattle are both.
Are there any restrictions on the use of AI and ET work and programs in the breed? All AI and ET programs must be approved by Management and the current owners of the donor cattle. However we do encourage these programs. Are there any restrictions on the amount of Brahman and Hereford content in the breed? Braham inheritance in the Braford cattle to be evident in their appearance, indicative of ¼ – ¾ Brahman Characteristics.

Brahman
Brahman brings key ingredients for
Successful beef production ✔ Adaptability to the environment ✔ Production potential
EFFICIENCY:
The Brahman's improved efficiency of production over breeds is closely linked to its unique digestive system attributes: ✔ The ability to recycle nutrients through the blood stream and saliva promotes digestion ✔ Reduced water intake means reduced urination resulting in less nitrogen loss and higher blood nitrogen levels ✔ Maintenance of higher intake levels of low quality feed ✔ Low maintenance requirement ✔ Slower rate of protein turnover enables muscle and body tissue development to continue on low feed Page 32.
intake ✔ Brahmans remain productive longer ✔ Reduced sulphur demand for hair growth means more available for amino acids associated with growth and production ✔ Lower rumen liquid volume and higher rumen bacterial fat results in
Red Brahman bulls.
higher levels of energy rich compounds in the blood stream.
FERTILITY:
An animal's reproductive performance is closely linked to its adaptability and nutritional levels. To Page 33
HEAT TOLERANCE:
Tolerance to heat is a major economic factor in tropical beef production. When the body temperature rises cattle become stressed, resulting in reduced feeding time and feed intake, increased water consumption, wasted energy panting, poor quality meat and even death. The Brahman's heat tolerance is controlled by, dark pigmented skin dissipates internal heat increased number, efficiency and size of sweat glands, sleek coat which reflects sun increased area of loose skin and slower metabolic rate which means less heat generated Studies have demonstrated that Brahmans have a greater reproductive response to improved levels of nutrition than other breeds because of their ability to close down their reproductive system as a survival mechanism when under stress. Under adequate levels of nutrition Brahman's fertility will equal that of other breeds.
PARASITE RESISTANT:
The Brahman's resistance to cattle tick is of major economic importance because of less chemical use and increased weight gain. The Australian Brahman's resistance to cattle tick is related to: ✔ immune response prevents ticks developing ✔ reduced tick burden on pasture and on animals ✔ sleek coat does not favour attachment of tick larvae ✔ chemicals in sweat gland act as repellent.
HIGH YIELDING CARCASE:
Grey Brahman cow and calves.
The Australian Brahman's impressive production performance on the hoof is backed up by an equally impressive performance as a carcase.Lower rumen content means higher dressing percentages Superior yield of saleable meat is a result of: ✔ Excellent muscle development ✔ Uniform even fat cover ✔ Less intramuscular fat which means less waste
FEEDLOT PERFORMANCE AND FEED CONVERSION HIGH GROWTH RATE: EFFICIENCY:
Outstanding results have been achieved by Brahman cattle in feedlots. Four groups (total 1039 head) of North Queensland Brahman cattle finished through Aronui feedlot achieved weight gains of 3.13 to 2.38 kg/head/day over 100 days and showed feed efficiency ratings up to 54% above the feedlot average. While these results are

rangus cattle have been making a name for themselves in Australia for more than 50 years. They are bred on commercially applicable criteria‌no fads, no frills. How many other breeds can effectively be used as a purebred, maternal and terminal breeding programme without compromising performance. Renowned for their fertility and easy calving qualities, adaptability and profitability, the performance of Brangus cattle in the workplace has ensured their justifiable prominence. Brangus cattle excel in all drivers of profitability. Being naturally polled Brangus eliminate the requirement to dehorn calves. The cowherd is easier to handle and hide damage is minimised. Brangus are solid coloured and either black or red. Choose the colour to suit your environment and breeding programme and still access the renowned Brangus traits. Enquiries • 07 4935 9105 • 0457 726 793 charlevue3@bigpond.com Charlevue Brangus Stud is situated just west of Dingo at the base of the picturesque Blackdown Tablelands National Park. The stud consists of approximately 300 registered black and red Brangus cows, with a further commercial herd to total approximately 1200 breeders. The country is made up of beautiful creek flats with some ridges of lighter forest country. The breeders at Charlevue has to be hardy and economic. The cow has to produce a calf every year with of the highest quality possible, whether she is stud or commercial cow. The stud aims to always cull any animals that fail to provide the right qualities, ensuring that clients will be happy with their bloodlines and traits. Temperament is a strong focus at Charlevue. Quality is quiet! Whether it is a bull, steer or a heifer it is crucial that it does not run around. Most cattle operations are run by all the family so there are no room for any temperament problems at all. The stud sells approximately 30 bulls a year focusing on quality not quantity. Bulls are weaned and worked well with horses, dogs and bikes. They are fed after weaning on a nutritionist balanced feed which helps them develop as strong and sound as possible. This ensures that the bulls have every opportunity to grow strong, it also allows any bulls that don’t do well on feed to be culled. Bulls are then turned out into the paddock for about 12 to 18 months. Once again, they have to do well and handle themselves without feed, or be culled. Charlevue sells bulls at the Rockhampton Brangus Society Sale which is held on the 10th and 11th of October 2016. Approximately 6 to 8 bulls will be offered this year. They will be all semen tested and scanned and also 100 percent guaranteed breeders. Charlevue will also offer a small number of quality red Brangus bulls at the Classic Red Brangus Sale which is held on the 20th of September 2016. Paddock bulls are available to purchase all year round and are offered in strong working order.
Charlevue Brangus has achieved some outstanding results in cattle competitions. A big highlight to the stud was when Charlevue Bella won Grand Champion All Breeds Female at Beef Australia 2009. Charlevue cattle have been very competitive in all show ring competitions throughout the years and plan to compete in more. Another highlight was winning the led steer class at the Central Queensland Carcase Competition in 2014. These steers were all judged on the hoof and then on the hook and the Charlevue Steer won overall. He was sired by the same bull which sired the top priced bullat last year’s Rockhampton Brangus Society Sale, Charlevue Centre Time for $46,000. The 2015 Charlevue Sale team sold for an average of $17,000 which was astounding result for how dry the country was back then. Please feel free to ring or contact us at Charlevue anytime! ustralian Brangus have the flexibility to be used as a maternal base, a terminal sire line or as a pure self replacing herd. However you choose to incorporate Brangus genetics into your program, the attributes of the breed will ensure your are taking a step in the right direction.
MAGIC MATERNAL MOTHERS
Brangus females are well known for their mothering ability. Excellent temperaments, calving ease and high fertility ensure that Brangus females are sought after by progressive cattle breeders. High reproduction rates, calving ease and strong mothering instinct aid calf survival. Excellent milking ability from sound functional udders give calves a strong start to life. Many breeders are using terminal European sires over their Brangus female herd. These calves have the best of both worlds with the increased muscle pattern and
growth from the sire. The Brangus female contributes a live calf and a milk supply to take advantage of the growth potential of these calves’ genetics. Bob Summerville, Glenbrook Charleville reported “ When we moved from the Brisbane Valley to Charleville we were amazed at how easily the Brangus cows adapted to the mulga country. The decider came when drought hit. Where the other breeds calving percentages decreased, the Brangus cows calved every year without fail, producing strong boned and well-muscled calves. They also proved to be good walkers in the paddocks a necessity here where the distances between waters are substantial.”
BEEFING UP WITH BRANGUS
There are many advantages in crossbreeding with Brangus sires no matter what breed of female you have.
Brangus bulls are renowned for producing light birth weight calves and the calving ease advantage of the breed means you can use Brangus bulls over heifers with confidence. F1 heifers sired by Brangus bulls carry high maternal value, fertility, milking ability and hybrid vigour and are valuable heifer replacements to retain in your program. Brangus bulls sire carcasses of high quality that will finish extremely well at any age for your targeted market be it grain crop or grass fed. Brangus steers are noted for their high quality carcase which has been proven by many successes achieved in carcase competitions and feed back trials all over Australia. John and Jo Searle West Point Gulargambone NSW crossed a Brangus bull over their Hereford herd they had developed over twenty years. “By using Brangus bulls over our To Page 37

We retained the first drop of ‘Super Baldie’ heifers, which we joined, back to Brangus bulls. The advantages of a self-replacing herd with no need for “heifer” bulls or purchasing replacement heifers should not be understated.
John Graham, Withersfield Pastoral Company, Emerald Qld reports “We’ve been running purebred Brangus cows on Withersfield since 1973. It’s pretty rough country – but with Brangus, no problems. They’re hardy animals, good calvers, great mothers and produce a top line of store steers.”

Charbray Top genetics a vital ingredient
T
he selection of top genetics’ has long been recognised as a vital ingredient in any beef operation. There are a growing number of producers who are undecided in which direction their breeding program should take after the initial stages of a cross breeding program.
When it comes to stabilising a crossbred herd there is no consideration more important than bull selection. After successive generations, herd bulls account for a large percentage of genetic variation in the herd. The selection of the right type of Charbray bull is extremely important
in this situation as it will allow you to stabilise your herd and produce a more even line of progeny. If you are careful about the genetics you are using and select bulls that compliment your female herd while maintaining extra muscle and thickness, then you won’t compromise any of the initial genetic gains you have made.
Breed for Consistency:
Know what you are going to get when your next lot of calves drop. By taking the time to select the right bulls that will compliment your female herd and using the correct type of Charbray genetics you will have much to gain on your bottom line. Bulls with good depth of breeding are meeting market demands with more reliability producing a better quality line of cattle. Purchase your Charbray Seed Stock from a Certified Charbray Breeder who has nurtured, measured and developed his herd to a selected criteria. Charbray bulls. Page 40.

Boost your profits
ecognised worldwide for their valuable contribution to beef industry profitability, progressive commercial cattle breeders across Australia have picked up the Charolais advantage. Charolais are one of the most important beef breeds in Australia today, famous for their ability to add profit to beef production. Charolais have easily adapted to all environments throughout the country, with the breed now considered one of the most reliable for cost-effective beef production. Charolais are renowned for their ability to grow fast, and produce consistent, high value carcases. These attributes make Charolais cattle sought after across all facets of the beef industry, with producers, feedlotters and processors alike.
Increase your profitability
We all understand beef production is a business. Reducing overheads, reducing cost of production and Page 42.
increasing turnover all have a part to play in growing overall farm profitability. Successful commercial breeders remain focused on increasing the maximum amount of beef they can produce with available resources. Charolais genetics can significantly increase total calf weight kilograms, and in so doing, increase profitability. Charolais are renowned as a placid breed, docile and easy to manage, so important in the production of growing high quality beef.
Unsurpassed hybrid vigour
The introduction of the Charolais breed to the Australian beef industry is a cross breeding success story. The most significant reason to crossbreed is to take advantage of the natural phenomenon known as Heterosis, or Hybrid Vigour. Commercial producers understand this key advantage, and the money it places in their pockets.
By incorporating Charolais genetics into your breeding program you can significantly benefit from the traits and characteristics this high performance breed can add to your herd and your bottom line. No matter what your cow base, whether you’re in temperate areas or the tropics, you are still able to take advantage of the profit focused attributes the Charolais breed has to offer. Thousands of commercial cattle producers can’t be wrong.
Cut above the rest
Charolais have become a force to be reckoned with in the commercial market place. In 2008, over $8 million worth of Charolais bulls were sold at public auctions around the country, demonstrating the importance and relevance of this great breed of cattle. This number is set to increase, with more commericial breeders seeing the advantages Charolais genetics have to offer. To Page 43

With demand outstripping supply, Charolais sired calves are continually commanding top prices in the saleyards. Many progressive commercial cattlemen using Charolais genetics are selling the progeny directly to feedlotters and processors, who understand the value of their growth and yield attributes.
Consistent carcases time and again The Charolais ability to sire consistent carcasses is well known, and proven time and time again. Many in the processing and retailing sectors regard the quality and consistency of Charolais as the breed’s real advantage, marking them as a preferred article, always in demand. With the Charolais carcases showing as much as a $200 advantage, it’s easy to see why. Charolais genetics continue to positively influence profitability in all

sectors of the beef supply chain, adding value across the board for stakeholders.
Meat quality consumers appreciate
Beef production is about producing a meal and keeping customers coming back for more. It’s critical to present a product the end user wants – and enjoys. With a quality eating experience assessed by such factors as ‘juiciness, tenderness and flavour’ it’s important that animals
have the genetic propensity to provide meat quality. Charolais deliver these attributes, consistently offering meat tenderness, even fat distribution, and the ability to maintain required levels of marbling.
Breeding for results
Prime lamb breeders do it. Pig breeders do it. Poultry breeders do it. They all take advantage of hybrid vigour and the money it makes To Page 44

D
evons are well known to be extremely efficient animals. Their fertility and ability to thrive in harsh conditions means that they can handle a wide range of management situations. Regarded by many top cattlemen to be the beef industry's best kept secret, Devons are indeed FERTILE AND EFFICIENT. Evidence and testimonials from around the world support these claims. Fertility in Devons: One of the most highly fertile of all cattle breeds. Calving percentages in the high nineties can be expected on good nutrition. Because of high fertility there is only a short time between calving and the next conception. This means shorter joining and calving periods. Keith Young from 'Edendale' near Kyogle, NSW whose family has been breeding Devon cattle for more than 100 years, says "The biggest asset Devon cattle have to offer is fertility and we regularly have calving percentages of between 96% and 98%. "Devon Bulls have large testicles and produce high quality semen. The average sized testicles of 148 mature Devon bulls measured randomly across Australia was 38.6 cm, compared with the all breeds average of approximately 36cm. The significance of this is highlighted by the comment of Bob Gahan, District Beef Officer, NSW Agriculture & Fisheries, Tamworth, "Testicle size Page 46.
is directly related to sperm count, hence has a significant effect on fertility. Also, important recent overseas research has proven that for every additional 1cm in scrotal circumference, the first oestrus of that sire's female progeny will be 4 days earlier, which is a good indicator of lifetime reproductive rate." Researchers from the New Zealand Department of Agriculture stated, "Devons have a higher natural fertility. Heifers show oestrus at an early age, cows achieve high in calf rates and bulls are active. The result is high fertility, together with their easy calving and good growth rates." Efficiency in Devons: The most important attribute for efficiency in beef production is fertility. However, efficiency is also influenced by many other factors in which Devon cattle excel. Calving Ease: Small vigorous calves which are usually born unassisted. Milking Ability: Renowned for high milk production resulting in heavy calves at weaning. Meat Quality: The breed has excellent MSA grade compliance. They are one of the best breeds for desired pH at slaughter with minimal "dark cutters" due to their ability to handle stress. Carcases have very even fat cover and consistently grade in the top MSA boning tables. Mothering Ability: Excellent mothering ability which means
calves have one of the highest survival rates to weaning. Weight Gain, Maturity and Carcase: Combine rapid weight gain as well as adequate muscle and carcase characteristics, with the ability to fatten on pasture at an early age. When run in harsher conditions they have the versatility to grow out into heavy bullocks. Feed Conversion: Cattlemen have found Devon cattle generally to be extremely efficient converters of grass to beef and this is evidenced by their ability to withstand extremes of conditions better than any other British breed. Adaptability: Robust constitution has enabled them to flourish in the diverse environments of Australia. In the Australian Devon-Hereford Crossbreeding trial it was proven that Devons not only excel on low nutrition but also grow as fast as Herefords on high nutrition. Longevity: Free from diseases such as eye cancer, are structurally sound, have extremely correct udders and have a robust constitution, which means they can be retained in the herd for more years than most other breeds. Temperament: Extremely docile cattle and therefore easy to handle and manage. They were a favourite breed for the bullock teams of the past and they settle into modern intensive feeding situations well. Bloat: Well known as one of the Bos taurus breeds with the greatest tolerance to bloat.
DEVON
Devons have proven to be excellent crossbreeders overseas as well as in Australia Devon cow and calf.
Crossbreeding with Devons A s new breeds of cattle have been introduced to Australia, Devons have been successfully tried in crossbreeding with the majority of them. They have also played a major role in the development of several composite breeds such as the Afrikaner, Droughtmaster, Shaver Beefblend, Santa Getrudis and the Brazilian Bravon. Devons also had an influence in Japanese Wagyu cattle, with several shipments having been imported into Japan in the early 1900's. Devons possess many attributes which complement weaknesses in other breeds and, with the added benefit of hybrid vigour, make excellent cattle for crossbreeding. The fertile and efficient Devon has high weaning percentages, excellent feed conversion, early puberty and conception, high milk production,
renowned foraging ability, a docile temperament, a high resistance to bloat, no eye problems and will adapt and survive in all Australian environments. This combination of breed advantages ensures that Devons have the versatility to enhance any crossbreeding program. Devons have proven to be excellent crossbreeders overseas as well as in Australia. Over the last thirty years a great deal of research has been carried out around the world on different crosses and their relative performance under varying agricultural systems. As the amount of research increases, Devon cattle are measuring up as one of the best all round breeds. As the result of extensive research into the Devon's most suitable role in crossbreeding, the breed was found to be outstanding in four particular
applications, the first being to improve MSA compliance and boning table grades. As the sire or dam of FI females joined with other British breeds (The British Fl Connection). As a sire over highly infused Bos indicus herds to produce valuable first cross females and steers. Over Bos indicus and European Bos taurus influenced cows, where early maturing progeny is required. Droughtmaster Proven performers Efficient, effective and economical performance in all links of the production chain. he pioneer cattlemen who developed the Droughtmaster retained the most desirable performance traits from both Bos indicus and Bos taurus genetics. They developed a breed which could perform by consistently producing and reproducing despite parasites and adverse environments, while economically producing high yielding carcases of quality beef. Performing well in harsh conditions is important, but performance in all links of the beef production chain is more important. The Droughtmaster is renowned for its performance in: Reproduction: Calving ease, high libido, fertility and adaptability all combine to give an outstanding reproductive performance. Growth: Excellent milking ability, digestive efficiency, low nutritional requirements, feed conversion efficiency, walking ability and foraging ability combine to make the Droughtmaster an out-standing performer. Consistently outgrowing most other breeds when nutrition is restricted, they perform as well as most breeds in feedlots or on high quality pasture. Feed Efficiency: A low maintenance digestive system,

unique to Bos Indicus derived breeds, contributes to the Droughtmaster's reputation for highly efficient feed conversion, which provides a large economic advantage. Pasture: Optimum growth under a range of variable conditions is major benefit offered by the Droughtmaster. From prime improved pasture in temperate regions, light native pasture in tropical right through to drought conditions which invariably plague many areas of Australia, the Droughtmaster is recognised as one of the leading performers. Asian Feedlots: Asian feedlots are an important and growing section of the global beef production chain. Access to high quality stock feed as well as climatic extremes are major challenges for them. An ability to handle the Asian heat and humidity, complemented by the efficient conversion of lower quality feed make the Droughtmaster a popular choice for the Asian feedlot buyers. High growth performance and extended ageing of cuts, can produce EQS 5 star grading; ■ Numerous wins in carcase competitions across Australia confirm this performance.
Providing Major Benefits Without Changing Your Breed Completely n the temperate regions of Australia, traditionally the home of the British breeds, the low maintenance Droughtmaster breed is being used increasingly in crossbreeding programs to produce easy care productive cattle. They are also used in tropical areas to improve carcase qualities and performance. The progeny resulting from this crossbreeding, have a significant economic advantage through their inheritance of Droughtmaster traits (in addition to the expected heterosis) : ✔ Calving Ease ✔ Longevity ✔ Reduced Eye Problems ✔ Bloat Resistance ✔ Mothering Ability ✔ Milking Ability High growth sires can be used

as a very efficient dam, and most effective when used with high growth sires. This combination fits the axiom 'cows for your country bulls for your market'. With equal parts of Bos taurus and Bos indicus blood, the Droughtmaster provides the opportunity to crossbreed without causing a dramatic change to either the visual appearance (phenotype) or to the genotype of the progeny.

successfully over Droughtmaster females, due to generations of Droughtmaster breeders constantly selecting for: ✔ Low Birth Weight ✔ Calf Shape ✔ Pelvic Structure The Droughtmaster bull passes on these dominant traits to his progeny in a crossbreeding program. Consequently, the F1 Droughtmaster female is renowned

Gelbvieh Traits
Growth: Gelbvieh cows have a lower mature weight and are more efficient than most other European breed females. They produce a lower birthweight calf which almost immediately starts to exhibit a tremendous growth pattern. When Gelbvieh bulls are used over British Breed females the resultant progeny can be expected to be at least 10% heavier at weaning age than straight bred calves out of the same females. Similar results could be expected

when crossing with Bos Indicus females. The result is more money in the producers pocket for very little extra cost. Maternal: Gelbvieh are strong in both growth and maternal traits so therefore they can be used as terminal sires or their heifer progeny can be retained as replacement females. Their puberty, fertility and milk production is also superior over other European cross females. Puberty: Gelbvieh have the earliest puberty of any beef breed, so under normal conditions Gelbvieh can be joined as early as To Page 51
GELBVIEH CATTLE... Are well known for their quiet and inquisitive temperament and are unique in the industry with their ability to excel in so many of the major traits. Contributing excellent maternal traits of high fertility, early puberty and good milk production plus the combination of a lower birth weight and explosive, curve bending growth rates that produce heavy, well muscled progeny with optimum finishing ability. The breed has much to contribute to the Australian beef industry and astute breeders are now realising the full potential that Gelbvieh genetics can contribute to a profitable beef enterprise.

elbvieh are a unique breed in the beef industry as they combine strong maternal traits with outstanding growth rates and excellent muscle development. Because of their quiet temperament and early maturing they are able to begin laying down fat at an early age. The result is an animal that reaches market weight younger, with optimum finish and tender, tasty meat. Gelbvieh cattle range in colour from a golden honey shade through to deep rich red and also black, which makes them ideal for crossing over most breeds to produce an even, solid colour which gives a uniform
13 months to calve at 22 months instead of at 24-30 months like most of the other larger breeds. This gives the first calf Gelbvieh heifer 15 months before she has to calve again as a 3 year old. This extra 3 months provides an extremely valuable management advantage for the sensitive first calf heifer, which has to suckle its calf and return to service for its next pregnancy, while still growing. Quiet Temperament: Gelbvieh have a quiet and inquisitive nature and display a docile temperament. Gelbvieh pass this quality on to their offspring. A quiet nature is being demanded by producers and processors and is required in workplace safety, bruising and the meat quality areas. Their excellent temperament makes them ideal for farmers who run a small number of cattle. Large herds are no different when it comes to temperament requirements making Gelbvieh a preferred choice especially in crossbreeding programs. Carcase Quality: Studies carried out at the Clay Centre, Nebraska USA, confirmed that Gelbvieh had the largest ribeye muscle area per 100kg of all breeds, hence they have high cutout yields. Gelbvieh are a lean breed with a fast growth rate with the ability to fatten at a younger age and given their marketability as yearlings, they are a source of high cutout yields. Both purebred and crossbred Gelbvieh cattle have demonstrated their excellent market suitability by winning beef carcase championships around the country.
GELBVIEH

Gelbvieh cows and calves.
Fertility: Gelbvieh had the largest testicles of all breeds in the Clay Centre research and since testicular size is related to the fertility of their daughters. Taking into account the breeds early puberty this could explain why the females are most fertile and even precocious. Milking Ability: Originally Gelbvieh where bred for milk production as well as beef, they have sound, compact udders with smallish well placed teats. The exceptional milking ability of the Gelbvieh compliments the growth trait of the breed and results in a young sappy calf that reaches weaning age at a suitable marketing weight. When used in a crossbreeding program the addition of the influence of hybrid vigour adds further to the profitability of the progeny. Weaning Weight: Gelbvieh produced the highest weaning weight per cow exposed to breeding at Clay Centre - which reflects their good performance in fertility, milk and growth. Weaning weights of the progeny can regularly be around

60% of the cows body weight. Yearling weights are more than adequate for joining replacement heifers to calve as 2 year olds and their early puberty and high fertility results in high conception rates. Heat Tolerance and Tick Resistance: The South African Gelbvieh Association has reported a distinct tolerance to both heat and ticks and there have been reports from Queensland. Gelbvieh bulls stand in the sun quite contentedly while British and most other European breeds seek the shade. Gelbvieh have a short coat and smooth skin which aids in heat tolerance and tick control. The Balancer Breed: Gelbvieh cattle crossed with Angus (red & black) produce a 'balancer'. Balancers utilise the advantages of hybrid vigour and increased production to produce high growth and well muscled progeny with added fat cover and easy calving traits. Balancers can be either red or black and are equally suited to grass finishing or sought after by feedlot operators.

across a range of traits, providing long-term viability and sustainability for modern day beef operations.
Efficiency
The Hereford breed is the ideal choice for commercial cattle breeders looking to reduce their production costs and increase their financial income. As Australia’s most feed efficient British breed, Hereford cattle have the genetic potential to improve your herd’s feed intake and utilisation to reshape your profitability and sustainability.
Profitability
Hereford cattle lead the profit race for $-per-head profit. Consistently
Hereford and Hereford cross cattle sell for top dollar at saleyards throughout Australia.
Docility
The temperament, or docility, of the Hereford breed will impact positively on your herd’s growth rates, fertility, carcase, meat quality, stress levels and manageability. Cattle with slow flight times, i.e. good temperament: ■ grow faster to final weights ■ have heavier carcases ■ have better feed conversion ratios.
Fertility
The Hereford breed’s high fertility rates enable producers to maintain and even increase herd numbers throughout any seasonal condition.
Females are reliable breeders, producing and weaning a calf annually, not just in the good years.
Adaptability
No matter the location, Herefords easily adapt to varying climates, environments and management systems.
Versatility
The Hereford breed can meet a range of market requirements, from domestic lightweight trade to the heavy export trade and are consistently sought after for the high quality, high value EU market. Hereford producers have the security of finishing cattle on grass or in the feedlot.

Weight for age
Producers are paid on the weight of their cows. Hereford cattle reach target weights faster, with less feed, than their competitors.
Cross breeding
Hereford sires put the unmistakable “whiteface” stamp on their progeny. This face has developed a reputation as a guarantee for proven and consistent performance in the stud and commercial sectors of Australia’s beef industry.
The Hereford breed can inject the much sought-after hybrid vigour into a herd when used in cross breeding programs.
MSA Compliance
Meat Standards Australia (MSA) is an Australian developed meat grading program which identifies the best eating beef. Breed composition affects MSA grading. Herefords can supply the desirable content with additional bonuses such as fertility, growth, survivability, temperament and feed conversion.
MAKING IT HAPPEN For Performance Cattle and Superior Beef, Herefords will make it happen every time. Whether you need bulls, steers or heifers, Herefords will give you excellent feed conversion, hardiness, fertility, growth, plus the famed Hereford temperament that can help reduce costs. So if you're not already getting the whiteface advantage, now is the time to buy Herefords.

his is what Bos indicus cross breeders have to say about using Hereford genetics. “I use the Hereford in a criss-cross breeding program with Santa Gertrudis as the calves are sought after in the fattening market. The criss-cross produces a type of beast that can be turned off at any stage in life, whether that is bullocks, the EU market or local trade. The crossbred breeders milk a lot better than the purebred of either breed.’’ Ray was able to value add to his surplus females through the vealer and store markets. We have kept using Hereford bulls as their fertility and temperament are one of their best qualities. As we are producing a feedlot animal we need cattle that are quiet, easy to handle and quickly adapt to feedlot conditions. Why Limousin? More in yield
Crossbreeding with Limousin provides increased weight gain, improved feed efficiency and large increases in retail beef yield and tenderness without the need for Hormone Growth Promotants.
No extra feed
High value cuts
A Limousin cross calf is expected to have about 9.5% more silverside, 9.5% more eye muscle area and 4% more retail beef yield, with a 3% increase in tenderness of the loin muscle and 5.5% more tender silverside.
Page 62.
Crossbreeding provides gains of 4 to 6% in weight through hybrid vigour and within breed selection can achieve ongoing increases in weight gain. Increasing the rate of weight gain increases feed efficiency.
Muscle up with Limousin for heavyweight profits! Invest in Limousin genetics and take advantage of the unique Limousin Muscling Gene which can get your beef herd producing up to: ✔ 19% more high value cuts ✔ 8% more in yield of retail cuts ✔ 6-11% more tenderness …with no extra feed! Source: Dr Wayne Pitchford, University of Adelaide. Further detail on the Limousin Muscling Gene can be found at www.limousin.com.au
Description: The Limousin is a rich gold colour, with lighter circles around the eye and the muzzle, and shading to a lighter colour on the legs. Limousins can also be black as a result of grading up from black cattle in Australia. The head is small and short with a broad forehead, and the neck is short. Limousin can be horned or polled. Most horned Limousins are dehorned at a young age. The Limousin is intermediate in size and maturity between British and most other European breeds. Hardiness: Limousin cattle adapt to diverse climates and the widest range of management systems, from the top end of the Northern Territory to the highlands of Central Tasmania. Ease of Calving: Limousin calves have low birth weights, which lead to minimum calving problems when Limousin bulls are used over cows of other breeds.

High Dressing Percentage: Limousin crossbred steers and heifers have high dressing percentages of 58 – 63 percent compared to an average of 53 – 58 percent. High Yield: High meat to bone ratios and low fat leads to outstanding yields of saleable meat from Limousin cross carcases. Yields of up to 80% of saleable meat are not uncommon. Tender Healthy Beef: Limousin
meat is finely textured, tender and low in saturated fats and cholesterol. It is genetically trimmed. Efficiency: Limousin cattle are efficient – they have moderate mature size and are excellent foragers walking long distances for food. They also have above average feed conversion rates. Genetic Strength: The Limousin stamps its characteristics on other breeds when used in crossbreeding programs, especially its superior carcase characteristics.

Compact beef cattle with a big future
ustralian Lowline Cattle are bred pure from Aberdeen Angus genetics originating from Scotland and Canada, developed in Australia to suit sustainable and lifestyle properties. Only the Australian Lowline Cattle Association (ALCA) has registered cattle that are DNA-typed and parent-verified to prove the cattle are true Australian Lowlines. ■ Lowline cattle are versatile – ideal for commercial farming, schools, students, families and lifestyle farmers. ■ Lowline Cattle have compact frames, approximately 60 percent of the size of larger breeds, with excellent feed efficiency ■ Improve viability – you can run more animals per hectare and thus make more profit per hectare ■ More effective and efficient use of smaller farms ■ Environmentally friendly – Lowline Cattle have a low impact on paddocks and fences Page 64.
■ Lowlines are naturally polled, have great temperaments and are easy to manage ■ Low birth-weight calves for easy calving in heifers and cows of any breed ■ Early maturing – steers have the ability to finish on grass from 14-months old
Grow your own beef
■ Beef is an important source of protein, vitamins, minerals and amino acids, especially iron, B12, niacin and zinc
■ Growing your own beef is a cost-effective way to feed your family a healthy diet ■ Lowline Steers are ideal for smaller acreage farms ■ Lowline Cattle are easier to manage, lower maintenance than other breeds and are feed efficient ■ Lowline beef is well-marbled, tender and flavoursome with a beautiful texture ■ Lowlines have moderate-framed carcases – perfect for the freezer Certified Lowline Beef is an opportunity for ALCA members to establish a farm business to sell their beef.

Lowline success original bulls are still working in 2013 at 8 years old. Coonong Station is vast so the bulls work in large paddocks and sometimes harsh conditions. It goes to show that structurally good bulls will have a long working life and the Lowline bulls are proving their longevity. Sophie Holt maintains the use of Lowline bulls for a heifer’s first calf is a sensible option. By getting 100 per cent of live calves and having 100 per cent to wean is the best outcome for any producer. Sophie says she likes that all the calves are consistent of type no matter what bulls are used. They
are quick growing, black baldy calves that are weaned at 6 months old, around 200kg, and sold as grass-finished yearlings, preferably over the hooks, fetching good prices. Last season, Sophie said they had joined the Lowline bulls with some of their older Hereford cows and all the cows were in calf. She said she didn’t know how the bulls had reached as some cows were quite tall – “perhaps they used each other to stand on” – but the job was done. Sophie Holt “Coonong Station” Urana, NSW.

oonong Station, a large NSW Riverina sheep and beef farming operation of 27,000 hectares between Urana and Jerilderie, purchased their first Lowline bulls in 2007. They had calving troubles with their Hereford heifers and had tried using bulls from other breeds over the years but were still pulling calves or losing heifers calving. It was suggested by another beef producer that they try using Lowline bulls so they purchased three 2 year old bulls from Elandra Park and Wanamara studs. Since then they have purchased a few more Lowline bulls but the
It’s not as far-fetched as it might sound to the average person, thanks to Lowline cattle which are compact and easily managed. If your home is on acreage, you have a small hobby farm or access to use paddock space – you can grow your own beef! The ‘paddock to plate’ movement is gaining momentum as more people demand quality and want to know exactly where what they’re putting in their mouths has come from. When it comes to beef, your family deserves the best. While Lowline beef is renowned for its great taste, it’s also a source of energy boosting B vitamins – important for growing families. Murray Grey cattle worldwide are increasingly chosen to be used in crossbreeding programs because they:
✔ Reduce calving problems ✔ Improve temperament ✔ Assist fertility ✔ Widen the range of marketing options ✔ Reduce turn off age for Northern producers ✔ Adaptability ✔ Increase yield ✔ Improve meat quality ✔ Improve milking ability By choosing to use a Murray Grey bull you will be investing in the future of your beef production system.
Murray Grey bulls.
Origin – Fast Facts • The Murray Grey breed was developed in the upper Murray River region of Australia in the early part of this century. • The first grey cattle resulted from the mating of an Angus bull and a roan Shorthorn cow. It was found that two or three crosses of the greys produced a very high percentage of grey cattle, combining features of the Beef Shorthorn and Angus breeds. • Commercial cattlemen became interested in the breed’s rapid growth and high carcase yield, and several developed grey herds.

eveloped in Queensland in the 1970s, specifically to suit the Queensland environment, the Greyman breed was the result of combining the outstanding genetic characteristics of both the Murray Grey and Brahman breeds. Greyman cattle carry between 25% and 75% of Murray Grey blood, with the remainder made up of Brahman. This allows breeders the option of being able to tailor-make genetic blends, selected for optimal performance specific to the region and environmental conditions. More simply, Greymans can be bred with a greater emphasis on Brahman content in the North or in ticky country, or with a higher percentage of Murray Grey blood to suit softer, Southern pastures.

Red Angus Real advantages R
ed Angus cattle have all the attributes of Angus with the addition of the homozygous red coat colour. They excel for temperament, maternal qualities and carcase characteristics. Red Angus and their crosses are keenly sought after by commercial producers as a cornerstone for their production system, and have the ability to adapt to a vast range of the climatic conditions to be encountered across Australia.
HOMOZYGOUS RED COLOUR
Red Angus when crossed with other red breeds will produce red-coated calves. This has an advantage when selling through saleyards of evenness in the line of sale cattle. The red coat colour reflects the sunlight better than darker breeds and makes the Red Angus a better option for tropical based systems. Red Angus cattle have advantages over Angus in buffalo fly areas where the buffalo fly is attracted more to black hided Page 68.
cattle. The lighter Red colour also assists in handling heat conditions better than black hided cattle.
FERTILITY & MATERNAL
Red Angus females reach puberty at a young age, are highly fertile and are renowned for their longevity in the herd. Red Angus females have excellent milk production and have a strong maternal instinct. Combined with easy calving attributes Red Angus females are keenly sought after.
TEMPERAMENT
Red Angus cattle are considered by breeders to be gentle natured and easy cattle to work. Worldwide reports support the docile nature of the Red Angus breed. Australian research conducted by CSIRO Livestock Industries (CLI) and the Co-operative Research Centre for Beef and Cattle Quality (Beef CRC) at Rockhampton have found a positive relationship between 'good' cattle temperament, improved productivity levels and overall meat
quality whereas cattle with poorer temperaments have comparatively lower average daily weight gains and reduced carcase weights. "Poor temperament lowers cattle profitability through increased production costs - for example, mustering, maintaining cattle handling facilities and the increased risk of injury to the cattle and their handlers."
CARCASE QUALITY
High quality beef production is synonymous with the Angus breed worldwide. Whether from pasture or feedlot Red Angus beef is highly desired for meat quality. Red Angus like all Angus lay down intra muscular marbling, which assists in the eating quality of the meat. Red Angus has the ability to be targeted at a range of market specifications. From the light domestic production through to heavy export specifications Red Angus can be incorporated into your programme to suit your environmental constraints.

n northern areas that require added heat tolerance, Red Angus cattle work well on Bos Indicus and their derivative cattle breeds. The progeny resulting are heat tolerant, and highly regarded for their maternal abilities; their steer mates should express improved marbling genetics. High levels of heterosis may be seen when Red Angus are used on
cattle of such divergent origins. Using Red Angus allows breeders to take advantage of the complimentary traits existing between Angus and Brahman cattle as well as the heterosis that is expressed in a Bos taurus x Bos indicus cross. Leading Australian Pastoral Companies are using Red Angus in their developing composite herds. NAPCO are using Red Angus
genetics in their Kynuna Composite to access growth and marbling. Red Angus and ABC Composite breeder Andrew Hicks describes his Red Angus as a great breed. He summarises the breed as “a red breed suited for the Australian heat, which is low maintenance, polled with low birth weights, high weight gains, and has top carcase attributes.”

Romagnola
Romagnola meets market T
rial work at the Beef Quality Cooperative Research Centre in southern NSW has shown that a wide range of genotypes will produce carcasses of acceptable eating quality for the domestic market. The steers evaluated were the progeny of Hereford cows mated to a range of European, British and Wagyu sires. For this market, where age is a primary consideration, growth rate and carcass yield will be the most important traits that determine profitability for the producer. This was borne out in the C.R.C trials, where, with saleable beef valued at $10 per kg, the steers by Page 70.
Thrive in any environment
European sires produced carcasses valued up to $140 above the other breed types. The trials are valuable because with new technologies for beef production continually being developed, it is sometimes difficult for cattlemen to keep everything in perspective and to get our priorities right. We need to be able to identify and focus on those factors that have a real impact on the efficiency of our production system. The selection of bulls for their propensity to marble and the development of DNA tests for the To Page 71
“Australian beef producers are recognising the Romagnola for it’s ability to adapt and thrive in all environments, with superior fertility and maternal function and to produce beef with excellent eating quality characteristics. Romagnola cattle are found in all states of Australia and are primarily used in cross breeding programs to produce superior animals for all modern beef markets.

presence of genes that contribute to tenderness, are both means by which the eating quality of beef may be improved. However before we adopt new technologies such as these, we must consider two things: Firstly the critical level of expression for each characteristic. That is the level beyond which there is no financial reward for further improvement. Secondly, the negative correlation that can exist between traits, such as between some adaptive and production traits or between growth rate and marbling. The Romagnola breed holds a unique position in the industry in relation to both of these considerations: It inherits the adaptive traits and strong constitution of its Bos Indicus ancestors and, at the same time, is unsurpassed for growth rate and

muscularity by any other European breed. In addition, Italian breeders and researchers have focused strongly on improving the eating quality of the end product to satisfy their discerning customers. At present most of our markets do not pay a premium for quality criteria such as tenderness and marbling.
High growth rate and high yield are the most important production traits
Under these circumstances high growth rate and high yield are the most important production traits. However, interest in the eating quality of beef is increasing and more markets are incorporating quality criteria in their specifications, such as in the MSA system. The Romagnola is one breed that can be used to meet these changing conditions without the need to trade off performance for quality. Mated to British bred cows, Romagnola bulls not only generate maximum growth and higher yielding carcasses but have already proven to do so without any adverse effect on marbling.

developed, that other cattlemen should enjoy the benefits of increased production, even in harsh conditions that could be obtained by these cattle. Since arriving in Australia Santa
Gertrudis have gone on to become one of the leading breeds of beef cattle excelling in the areas of crossbreeding, weight for age, food conversion efficiency and daily weight gain.
Page 73
SANTA GERTRUDIS
Why breed Santa Gertrudis? The nine main reasons why you should choose to breed Santa Gertrudis cattle in Australia. 1. A large beef breed Mature bulls weigh from 900 kg. Mature cows weigh 630-725 kg. 2. Adaptability Santa Gertrudis cattle adapt easily and quickly to a wide range of climatic conditions and can now be seen flourishing in all States of Australia from the harsh cold climates of Victoria and Tasmania to the sun baked plains of the Northern Territory and tropical Queensland. 3. Combining hardiness with beef Exceptionally good foragers; due to their excellent walking ability they can travel long distances for food and water. Consistently larger calf drops in competitive tests with other major breeds. Exceptional longevity, bulls have been known to work until 14-15 years of age and regularly females of 13 - 15 years and more have been recorded as producers of top calves. 4. Fewer production problems Easy Calving - Santa Gertrudis cows are renowned for producing calves with small birth weight and rapid weight gains to weaning. The good dark coloured, well hooded eyes are known to be Page 74.
resistant to cancer and have also proven resistant to pink eye problems. High resistance to bloat under a variety of conditions. Strong healthy calves mean a higher percentage from birth to weaning and more profit in your pocket. Tick resistance - Santa Gertrudis cattle have maintained a high inbuilt and heritable resistance to ticks. 5. Mothering Ability Cows have above-average production of quality milk with high butterfat content. Cows are renowned for their natural nursing ability; one cow will often stand guard over numerous calves while the other cows graze. Excellent maternal instinct. 6. Marketability from grain or pasture They consistently excel with carcass weight per day of age. Weight gains of 1 to 1.5 kg per day is easily attainable. Ability to be turned off at a young age; popular in Western Australia`s baby beef market, in southern states as vealers and yearlings, excellent pasture fed for popular restaurant trade and ideal for the bullock and feedlot export markets.
Natural ability for efficient feed conversion and quick weight gains either on pasture or feedlot. They continue to gain efficiently without increasing excess fat deposits. 7. High Carcass Cutability and Salvage Value Santa Gertrudis cattle maintain high buyer demand because of their reputation for high yielding carcass with the ability to produce ideal fat coverage for the market. Large mature size ensures high salvage values on culled stock. 8. Poll Cattle Santa Gertrudis cattle are acceptable under the Standard of Excellence either horned or polled. Poll cattle are shown in the Stud Book and Stud Book Certificates with the addition of [P] for poll or [PS] for poll with scurs. No penalty attaches to dehorning, either before or after classification. 9. Babysitting Santa Gertrudis cows calve easily and their highly developed protective mothering instinct is regularly illustrated with a few mother cows tending 10 to 20 calves while the others are grazing.

he Santa Gertrudis bull is renowned as one of the industry’s most efficient beef producers. You will notice immediate improvements with the first calf crop. The calves will have no trouble at birth with smaller birth weights than most of the recently imported breeds and yet they are renowned for their rapid growth. The use of a Santa Gertrudis bull will introduce heat tolerance, tick resistance, and most importantly, when crossed with British breeds, an immediate drop in the number of losses due to eye cancer and pink eye. In recent years breeders of Santa cattle in Australia’s more temperate climates have consistently recorded significant reduction in losses caused by bloat. Santa cattle have the ability to thrive on lush pasture without suffering from bloat - a problem which causes untold losses every year in some of Australia’s southern States.
You will notice immediate improvements with the first calf crop Mature Santa Gertrudis bulls weigh in excess of 900 kg with 1000 kg and more not uncommon. The average scrotal circumference is frequently in excess of 40cm. Weight gain is one of the most highly heritable performance traits in beef cattle - daily weight gains of Santa Gertrudis bulls is regularly monitored at more than 1.5kg per day. Santa bulls have outstanding foraging ability which means they can thrive even under the harshest conditions and they are noted as very active and athletic sires. Senepol Why Senepol?
Cross with Senepol… and don’t look back Heat Tolerance: A pure Bos Taurus breed with superior heat tolerance (USDA Subtropical Research Station, Brooksville, Florida) Dr Tim Olsen’s long term research findings established that Senepol cows maintained a cooler rectal temperature than Brahman cows whilst grazing during the heat of the day. These studies also found that the F1 Senepol maintained rectal temperatures the same as full blood Senepol thereby indicating the ability to pass on the factor in crossbreeding. Disease and Insect Resistance: Senepol have a greater immune response compared to other beef breeds. This fact has been largely Page 80.

attributed to the N’Dama influence. N’Dama cattle are highly resistant to the Tsetse fly, a carrier of the disease Bovine Trypanosomiasis (Sleeping sickness). This trait is of importance in Australia where Buffalo fly is prevalent. Slick coat gene: An identified gene
(Sk-Dr Tim Olsen) confers a very short haired sleek coat when an animal carries a copy of the gene. To date Senepol is the only breed available in Australia that is known to be a carrier of the gene. The gene is associated with the heat tolerance of the Senepol breed. Smooth coated animals in tick infested country will carry less tick burden than hairy coated animals. The natural licking (grooming) process, as well as the animal’s inherent tick resistance, greatly reduces tick larvae from maturing. The Senepol and its slick haired crosses, from field counts conducted in Queensland, appears to have a very high level of genetic tick resistance.
S
enepol offers cross breeders excellent hybrid vigour from a tropically adapted Taurine breed, with a genetic package which has not been subjected to unbalanced ‘single trait’ selection. Senepol admirably complement tropical beef production where traditionally Bos Indicus derived breeds are used. Senepol are the ideal Bos Taurus for crossbreeding with British and European breeds in hotter country and for use in the development of tropical composite herds. The progeny resulting from crossbreeding with Senepol have a significant economic advantage through their inheritance of

Shorthorn bulls.
“The breed that built Australia”
“Because the customer is always right” Shorthorn breeders understand that they are one link in the Beef Supply Chain. More than understand it, they respect it. Quality or quantity, always the big question for any production system. So why target just one category? Shorthorn cattle have excellent marbling traits, and combine these with high yield percentages. They are also extremely efficient converters of feed. What does this mean for you? Shorthorn cattle deliver high compliance rates and extremely consistent performance across a variety of market specifications, whilst requiring less feed to achieve it. That means happier customers and more margin for you. This is why Shorthorns are in high demand. Whether you are targeting early turnoff or premium markets and whether your system demands grain-fed or grass-fed performance, Shorthorn cattle deliver a better bottom line.
It is a tough job to stand out in today’s marketplace. We are constantly told to increase production, increase compliance, decrease risk and differentiate ourselves from other producers. Shorthorns allow you to do that! Best of all, the Shorthorn production model is safe, without the higher risks that usually come with higher returns. As costs keep rising, the business model of today is always under pressure from the demands of tomorrow. When you add Shorthorns to your current production system, you have the ability to increase fertility and production, retain maternal heterosis and genetic gain, increase feed efficiency, increase compliance rates, maintain market versatility, improve temperament and longevity and create a cow herd you can be proud of whilst producing a product that is in demand. Adding Shorthorn won’t diminish the capital value or performance of your cow herd and you begin to enjoy the benefits of differentiating yourself in the market place. Ask anyone who is currently using Shorthorn genetics in their program why they do it and they will tell you. “They can’t afford not to!”

South Devon Can you afford to ignore versatility and performance? Fertility: Unlike many large breeds, South Devons exhibit early puberty, suiting any joining program. Combined with longevity, it is common for 15 year old cows to still be producing top calves. Temperament: Known world wide as the gentle breed, South Devons quiet disposition is a real plus, from

small holdings to station country. We all appreciate less stress and bruising, to both man and beast! Performance: Outstanding results in carcase competitions and productivity trials have been achieved Australia wide, and To Page 89

overseas. Carcase Quality: Local and International research clearly shows that South Devons have very desirable carcase qualities. The ability to combine British meat quality with muscle and yield is unique. F1 Females: Hybrid vigor with added frame, muscle and milk, the South Devon F1 is a valuable addition to your herd, and much sought after at the saleyard. Versatility: Progressive commercial cattlemen currently use South Devons to produce vealers to bullocks, in both pure and cross

breeding programs. Marketing flexibility is a real plus. Marbling: Local and international results confirm South Devons marble well, allowing access to the lucrative Japanese market. Feed: Whether grain or grass orientated, South Devons feed conversion ability will add profit to your operation.
Terminal Sire: Yes, but why waste a great F1 female, you don’t often get muscle and maternal qualities in the one package. Cross Breeds: South Devons are an ideal choice for cross breeders. Their suitability is proven in British, Bos Indicus and European based herds Australia wide.

Speckle Park
What is a Speckle Park?
S
peckle Parks, the beef cattle breed created in Canada, are now an internationally sought after breed. They are a carcass orientated yet maternal Pure Bred (not a composite), breed of beef cattle. They are Polled and British Bred originating from Canada. Speckle Parks are moderate sized. Mature cows range in weight from 600kgs to 850kgs and mature bulls 1000kgs +. Calves average 30 to 40kgs at birth and wean off at about 230kgs to 370+kgs. Speckle Park cattle come in a variety of colour patterns. They are predominantly black with white top line and underline, with speckled hips and sometimes shoulders and with a black or black roan face. The second colour pattern is the leopard pattern. It is similar to the speckled pattern but there are definite black spots on the animal instead of just speckles. The white animals with some black hair on the body are considered 'leopards'. The third colour pattern is the 'white' pattern. The white animals have white hair on the body and face but have black points. i.e. eyes, ears, nose, and hooves. The fourth is solid black. There is a percentage of blacks. Page 90.
The solid black heifers are registrable and can be used in the purebred herd, but the bulls are registrable but cannot be used in the purebred herd.
FERTILE, Hardy & Healthy
With their fine skin and hair in summer and a quick to 'slick off' hair coat, Speckle Parks adapt well to the Canadian summers as well as being able to 'coat up' when needed for their notoriously cold winters. They are tough, real tough, you can throw any harsh climatic situation at them and they survive, get back in calf, rear a good one, yet are so easy to feed and come back in condition quickly after hard times, traits that will stand them in good stead in Australian's harsh environment. Early to reach puberty being "British bred" Speckle Park females cycle early and breed easy. In Canada, and now increasingly in Australia and New Zealand, butchers and meat graders are very impressed with the consistently high quality of the Speckle Park carcass. It isn't uncommon to get an exceptionally good carcass from any breed, but what is IMPRESSIVE is
when the carcass from a particular breed is consistently good. That is the case with the Speckle Park. Another IMPRESSIVE fact about the Speckle Park is their UNIQUE ability of being able to achieve a AAA carcass without excess outer fat cover. Most breeds are able at achieve AAA carcass but often at the expense of excess outer fat. Speckle Park can achieve a AAA carcass with minimal fat cover, thus grading YG1-AAA.
Docile Nature
The key to more weight gain and less stress on man and beast. Speckle Parks are docile animals. Their gentle disposition makes them a pleasure to work with. They are however tribal and prefer to be in the company of other cattle.
Breed Standards
The breed comes in 3 colours (see above) and in black. Black animals must have the word [black] after its name. All black animals must have DNA verification before they can be registered. Rarely, there are some animals born with red markings. These cannot be registered. Animals with horns cannot be registered.
SPECKLE PARK
SPECKLE PARK TALK “We were amazed at how the Speckle bulls handled the heat, they worked and worked. The best bulls we have had.” “We used Speckle Park over Brahman and Brangus cows. The crossbred calves are the best we have seen.” “We have Speckle Parks in our feedlot, they have incredible conversion rates.” “We killed some Speckle steers on farm, they were straight off grass. They had great marbling and the taste of the meat was incredible”. “The Speckle Park seem to handle drought conditions better than our other cattle. They look surprisingly good.” “The consistency of carcass, colour and quality of our speckle park cross calves from a mixed cow herd has really impressed us.” “We run Speckle bulls with Murray Grey cows and Angus cows. We got 100% pregnancy and 100% calving.”

Features of this exciting new breed of beef cattle that complement their superior carcass traits are:
• Bulls • PTIC cows • Heifers • Semen & Embryos packages
6356178aa
• A Pure British Breed. Not a composite. • Moderate birth weights. • Sleek and slick in summer with soft skin and hair and they are early to shed their winter coats. • Highly fertile-with magnificent udders & high milk flow. • Breed renowned Fault Free structures. Polled bred. • These docile cattle are a pleasure to work with, quiet and kind natured in the working yard environment -- a trait that is heritable and passed on in cross breeding programs, where it is a known fact that quite cattle have superior weight gains. • Moderate Framed and “easy doing”, yet having Impressive weight gains off both Grass & Grain. • High Marbling yet perfect fat covering, again off Grass or Grain. • Incredible yielding carcasses and impressive quality fine tender eating meat go to make this breed something VERY Special in the beef business. • Hardy and tough with dark pigmented skin, Speckle Park Cattle have fewer health problems than many other breeds, eye cancer, pink eye, dystocia, and hoof problems are virtually unheard of in the breed. • Attractive, easy on the eye, their distinctive colour pattern of “SPECKLES” are readily passed onto their crossbred offspring. This enables buyers to know that with SPECKLE marked cattle they are getting at least 50% of all of the above mentioned heritable and desirable traits. This takes away the ever increasing questions “What breed is that black one?” “Is it European or British bred?” “Will it marble?” “Will it have enough fat cover?” or “Will it have too much?” • SPECKLE PARKS do more things RIGHT.

Wagyu
W
What is Wagyu?
AGYU is a Japanese beef cattle breed derived from native Asian cattle. The name ‘WAGYU’ refers to all Japanese beef cattle, where ‘Wa’ means Japanese and ‘gyu’ means
Page 92.
cow. Wagyu were originally draft animals used in Japanese agriculture, and were selected for their physical endurance. This selection favoured animals with more intra-muscular fat cells,
or ‘marbling’, which provided a readily available source of energy. Wagyu is a naturally horned breed and the cattle are either black or red in colour.
W
agyu is a unique breed that has amongst its key attributes, other than the exquisite marbled beef quality, a high calving ease, excellent (docile) temperament, resilient in the feedlot and has a high (dressing percentage) carcass yield. Most important is the economic value derived from each animal, which is currently 100% more than pastoral cattle, sold at either the farm gate or as a long fed carcass. Wagyu breeding requires patience as it takes time to build up a viable herd and end markets, this then becomes your own economic moat. The Wagyu breed is gaining strength and popularity as it becomes more apparent to Australian beef producers that there is a real need
and demand for high quality carcasses that derive from the marbling prominent in the Japanese genetics. The Wagyu breed is unsurpassed for its marbling and ability to improve meat quality in cross breeding programmes. While this has been important in improving the capacity of Australia’s exports to Japan to ‘grade’ higher, Australian Wagyu beef is now sold globally with 80 – 90% of production exported. Some 10 – 20% is sold domestically, playing a major role in improving the quality of beef for local consumption. Wagyu strengths include: ✔ Outstanding beef eating quality ✔ High marbling, delivering beef tenderness, juiciness and flavour
WAGYU
Why breed Wagyu? ✔ Softer fat composition: higher ratio of unsaturated fats – providing a healthier beef product ✔ Finer meat texture ✔ Strong dressing percentage and high retail beef yield ✔ Not excessive back fat ✔ Calving ease ✔ Fertility and virility ✔ Quiet temperament ✔ Versatile adaptation to environments ✔ Early female maturity ✔ Strong foragers ✔ Transport well over long distances ✔ Resilient in the feedlot, including resistance to Bovine Respiratory Disease ✔ Strong demand from high value markets including Japan
For further information on the Wagyu breed go to the Australian Wagyu Association website www.wagyu.org.au
Wagyu Beef… the world’s best tasting tender beef! The Taste Sensation “Tender, extremely juicy, rich textures with plenty of flavour, and pleasant lasting taste on the palate. Extraordinary beef.” Judges’ comments, Australian Wagyu Association – Branded Beef Competition. Wagyu is high in monounsaturated fats and with the ratio of monounsaturated to saturated fats of 2:1 Wagyu beef also contains more conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) – Omega 6 per gram than any other foodstuff – 30 per cent more than other beef breeds. CLA is a fatty acid with potent anti-carcinogenic properties, as well as being an anti-inflammatory agent.
6356178ab
Wagyu offers the finest quality of beef available in Australia. Highly prized for the exceptional meat quality. Wagyu genetics yield a beef higher in Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids than typical beef. Page 93

Tim and Lynette Olive ‘Apis Creek’ Marlborough “A very tough drought year meant doing things differently. We tried Gain Maintain with minerals and urea. Our cows produced more milk and the calves gained strength and vigour. Dave’s service and Gain Maintain were a lifeline under tough conditions.” Neil and May Rogers ‘Toobrack’ Longreach “The drought here makes it very tough on our sheep. Gain Maintain has been helping us to sustain the sheep and rams which now eat some pretty tough plants to survive.”
Dave Hudson, principal for Gain Industries and cattle producer - “I have been testing and using Wilmar products as a base for Gain Industries for a number of years on my own cattle with great results in terms of animal well-being and economical weight gains. We do bulk and 1000 litre shuttles, supply tanks and troughs and do full paddock service if needed. More and more graziers are switching to Gain products.

Jeff and Carmel Coombe ‘Glenlee’ Rockhampton “We background around 700 steers a year and tested Gain Advance for one month compared to an unfed control. Both were on some pretty ordinary pasture and both gained weight however the Advance fed cattle gained twice as much as the others making it a great investment. We will certainly keep using Gain for all our cattle.” Ross and Natalie Olive ‘Clifton’ Marlborough - “Very dry conditions saw our breeders suffering. Dave at Gain suggested we try a new approach so we tried Gain Advance on some poor heifers we had brought in. The weight gains convinced us to feed 1800 breeders using both Gain products. Dave’s knowledge and excellent service in paddock saw cow losses greatly reduced, improved cow condition and calf health in a very tough season. We will certainly keep using Dave and his products.”
