MODERN country Create the perfect, modern country cottage thanks to Andersens Modern country style is a beautiful blend of modern and country elements, which involves a bit of the unexpected. This style of decoration combines rustic, found and industrial elements with traditional country decorating materials such as wood, iron and natural objects. No matter what first comes to mind, the modern country cottage is a place of unpretentious simplicity. Learning to let your creativity and intuition be your main guide, together with some general principles, will help ensure a great result.

INCORPORATING TRADITIONAL COUNTRY-STYLE ♦Modern country style is less cluttered and fussy than traditional country décor with the focus on comfort. ♦Embrace shabby chic- the antiqued. Distressed, white-washed wood furniture combined with thick cushions and fabric items in feminine patterns. ♦ Accents such as wooden beams and floral motifs combine with contemporary touches like clean lines and industrial lighting to create modern country style. ♦Be creative. Add unrelated pieces such as a crystal chandelier with modern and rustic pieces. ♦Flooring is varied and your choices are unlimited. CELEBRATING a decade in business RENEE and Guy Jansen are celebrating 10 years in their plant and pet business. The store is a unique and complimentary blend of plant nursery and pet supplies, servicing South West Queensland. They frequently send out plants and pet supplies to graziers and also to people residing in outlying towns. Both Renee and Guy grew up in the local area, with Renee returning after studying botany at the University of Queensland in Brisbane and working in Landcare. Guy was keen to try something
new after years working as a wool classer and so the decision was made by the couple to go into business. Managing the store themselves, with the help of a couple of valued employees, Renee and Guy juggle the business in between raising their two small children. The couple work together seamlessly, with Renee’s interests in plant selection, identification and garden design, and Guy specialising in aquariums, pet supplies and produce, and garden irrigation. Renee frequently provides customers with a plant and
garden pest identification service. And if she doesn’t know what it is at first, she is very keen to research until she does. The store is located on the main highway in Charleville showcasing landscaped frontage. Stocking some of best brands in the business including Pohlmans seedlings, Searles professional potting mixes, Rocky Point mulches, Northcote Pottery and the AquaOne and PetOne range, Renee and Guy are keen on providing quality products to rural customers at the best price. There is also a selection of pavers and timber garden edging, all tried
and tested in their own garden, of which they have opened for local garden tours in support of the local Landcare group. Renee’s favourite trees for a garden are the Crepe Myrtle Lagerstroemia indica for its summer colour and winter leaf drop, and the Drunken Parrot Tree Schotia brachpetala for its dense shade and beautiful tree shape. They both agree the Oleander plant should be more utilised in these regions, especially in street scaping. Pop in and see the friendly team today for all of your pet and plant needs.

BENEFIT from ipl “The main benefit of IPL is permanent removal of unwanted, embarrassing hair on the face and body, including ingrown hairs” Laurice said. “The other benefits are skin rejuvenation IPL which increases collagen production and elasticity in the skin, reducing fine lines, spider veins and pigmentation. “Also the IPL acne treatment uses heat and oxygen, killing the bacteria causing the acne in the skin.” Boasting a range of beauty services as well as the IPL,

THERE has been a lot of talk in recent years about IPL Permanent Hair Removal, however many people still seem unaware of the huge benefits it can offer. IPL Permanent Hair Removal is a safe and effective treatment and has come a long way since it was first introduced. The procedure is pain free and very affordable and best of all, is offered to residents of the Maranoa through Roma’s own Radiance Beauty Bar. According to salon owner Laurice Kennedy, IPL offers incredible benefits.

winter style this season Show your feminine side this winter with gorgeous styles Who says winter is dull and boring? Look at these gorgeous clothes! Colour and style with accessories, shoes, handbags and jewellery that all mix and match. Predominantly we think of black, brown, grey and taupes for the colder months, but following on from last season’s trend to add colour to make outfits "pop”, this year colour has been a feature on every catwalk and it seems the bolder the better.
The orange of the last few seasons has moved through to red and navy which along with grey and khaki are the new black. Forest green is replacing the lime green which was so complimentary of last season’s orange. Layers are as popular as ever, totally suiting our Western Downs weather. Accents are natural, complimented with a continuation of colour, be that makeup but with big bold matching lipstick or jewellery and handbags which can be as big as you like. Boots, long and short are very popular, but add fringes and tassels for a head turning look. Evening wear is above the knee but feminine and black is still

Putting a healthy spin on a few regular favourites is working a treat for The Tasting Co
What’s for breakfast?
WHEN you walk into the Tasting Company on Hawthorne St, you feel as if you’ve entered metro Melbourne. The decor is chic, the tables and stools are arranged in a different fashion – everything is designed to give you a sense that where you are is not Roma. And according to owner Bec Cannon, that feeling is entirely intentional. “Our target was to cater for five markets, hence the decor, layout and design of the cafe,” she said. “We arrange the long tables so you can turn your back and relax where you are – you can have your own dining space. “We make it so our customers can forget about the troubles and stresses involved with life and escape reality a bit.” Aside from the relaxing atmosphere for one of Roma’s busiest cafes, there is a strong
The Tasting Co offer an exhaustive menu for breakfast for a cafe of its size, and every item has had any unnecessarily unhealthy elements removed, with the intent of keeping it tasty. Maranoa Style was offered to try the so-called ‘healthy bennie’, or eggs benedict served with spinach, sweet potato cake and your choice of a main element. The real difference is Bec’s very own spinach-naise, which acts as a healthy substitute for hollandaise sauce. To put it bluntly, this meal is delicious. All the pieces on the plate work together with their own unique tastes and textures. Most of the Tasting Co’s dishes are either paleo or can be changed easily to suit a paleo diet. The most notable thing about both this dish and the brekkie croissant is the level and variety of colour, something Bec is proud of. “Food is colour and fresh food has lots of colour,” she said. “I work on a rainbow scale and try to get as many colours in there as possible.”
What’s for lunch? If you are going to have lunch at the Tasting
Co, try the Roasted Beetroot Salad, with haloumi cheese and candied pecans. While the beetroot and cheese are certainly sensational, the real hit is the salad itself, with its lovely mix of fetta and onion helping to create a light and tasty meal. But a worthy mention is the cafe’s Satay Chicken Skewers, which are a much lighter version of something you would expect to have for dinner. The key to this dish working is the sauce, which is not heavy or too thick, while still being very tasty.
Something to drink? Being a cafe, the Tasting Co’s coffee is one of its strong points and their baristas certainly have an incredible knack of getting rich aromas without burning the beans. For something cold, try one of their healthy smoothies, which are made fresh to order. The ‘Pretty Passion’ acts as a solid palette cleanser.
Is it good? The Tasting Co has so much going for it – wonderful food, great coffee, relaxing atmosphere and friendly staff. The healthy aspect is a strong element, but in reality the dishes have to at least taste good, and in this regard they are sublime.

REDEFINING country dining experience TOM GILLESPIE
BC’s Bar and Grill have stepped it up in taste stakes thanks to a delightful and fun menu well-worth trying. HIGH-class dining is not always associated with country life, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t quality venues in south-west Queensland that cater for a more experienced palette. BC’s Bar and Grill is a glorious mix of the two environments – providing a mature set of tastes and textures without scaring off regular people with bizarre menu items. The hard work and direction has come from new managers Dave Javens and Chloe Konispoliatis, who want to see the long-standing restaurant return to its refined past while also catering to young people.
Something to start? Head chef Dustin McCormick, who has extensive experience working in some of Melbourne’s top restaurants, said he was constantly updating the menu to match the trends in Australia’s food scene. “Everything on the plate is designed to work
together – at the end of the day they should taste nice,” he said. “I keep up with the food trends in Melbourne and Sydney cafes and then I try to apply them to our menu.” And judging by the meals served for entrees, he isn’t lying. Maranoa Style got to try a serving of chorizo and prawn skewers with salad, and it was exquisite. The contrasting textures of the different meats, sausage and prawn, were excellent together and the salad is not intrusive on the meal. This reviewer recommends using the fresh limes that are supplied for extra zest. Not to be outdone, the ham and parmesan cheese croquettes, served with yoghurt and chilli flowers, are also a worthy starter. When you have so much cheese it can be a risk, but the choice of cheese is excellent and it doesn’t overpower the whole dish.
The main event? This reviewer has tried plenty of great pork belly over the years, but the one served by Dustin and the team is one of the best ever. Cooked slowly for several hours, the meat is so full of flavour you’ll savour every bite. The asparagus served with the pork belly is also a really nice companion element, but it’s almost an afterthought, because the main piece is just so good. For winter, the slow-cooked Lamb Osso Bucco is a perfect dish. The lamb sits on a bed of perfect
chorizo risotto and the whole plate feels like a warm hug on a cold night.
Something sweet? Do yourself a favour – try BC’s churros with cream and home-made chocolate sauce. Made fresh as you order and piping hot when it drops in front of you, this is a taste experience not worth missing.
To drink? Cocktails have formed a big part of Chloe and Dave’s new approach to BC’s, with the hope of attracting younger people with delicious drinks at affordable prices. “Cocktails are a way for us to attract a young crowd that might not come to BC’s necessarily,” Chloe said. “Our cocktails are fairly cheap and we have affordable wine options as well as higher-end labels.” Regardless of price, the cocktails served to this reviewer were delicious and varied in their approach. The mango daiquiri was particularly good, and barely tasted like a drink at all, since they used actual mango. Another highlight was the Snickers cocktail, which tasted exactly as you’d expect.
Is it good? BC’s Bar and Grill is a unique dining experience right in the heart of Roma and is certainly recommended to anyone wanting a taste of contemporary Australian cuisine.
