WITHOUT TRUCKS, AUSTRALIA STOPS

ANDREA SCHULZ

Welcome to our very first edition of Movin’ It. Whether it’s moving cattle or other livestock, grain, produce, machinery, parts, or general freight- the country would not function or survive without the trucking and transport industry. And it’s not just the drivers who keep things moving. There are so many people behind the scenes, from the salesman to the mechanic, through to the tyre fitter or the administration staff. Everyone plays a role in this industry, which deserves every opportunity to be recognised. We hope you enjoy this special ARM publication, which is a first of its kind.

NEW MILES TRUCK STOP Tillycorp behind new truck stop, Miles Industrial Park CONTACT ■ Glenn Tilly ■ Phone 0427 622 266 ■ Email admin@tillygroup.com.au industrial site," Mr Tilly said. "TillyCorp has small or large industrial lots for sale or lease, with development applications on each lot for industry and storage. "We welcome everyone to join us at the new industrial park. It’s close to town and opposite the industrial area on the Leichhardt Highway on the south side of Miles. It has a large dual access for road trains approved by Main Roads, with a safe lit truck park out the front. "All the lots are connected to town water with good water pressure available, and each lot is NBN/communications ready with underground power connected. The internal road network is asphalted for easy truck access to all lots, with stormwater and sewer connections," Mr Tilly said. One of the features on the Miles Industrial Park will be planted bottle trees, a famous icon for the township of Miles. There is further capacity for a developer to undertake sub-division on the larger lots, and Mr Tilly said he is happy to assist any clients with council on any infrastructure requirements.

It won’t be long until both truck drivers and travellers alike can take advantage of a brand new United Petroleum truck stop situated south of the main street of Miles on the Leichhardt Highway. The new truck stop features easy refuelling stations for cars, trucks and other large vehicles, with plenty of space for parking. There will be a truckies lounge, hot showers and bathroom amenities, a restaurant and a convenience store. The civil construction has been carried out by Tilly Earthmoving, while Lanskey Constructions have done a great job co-ordinating all the contractors needed to construct a project of this scale. Glenn Tilly, from Tilly Earthmoving, said it has been an interesting experience for his company to work on the new truck stop. "We have tried to maximise local involvement on this project, which has been a great benefit to the town of Miles," Mr Tilly said. The truck stop is surrounded by the Miles Industrial Park, which has been a large scale construction project. Tilly Earthmoving is currently building a new industrial shed on the front block, to cater for a new business. Over the last three years, Tilly Earthmoving has worked tirelessly to fulfil the vision of improving businesses in Miles by providing a convenient location for like-minded businesses. Christmas appeal

Without the generous support of several local trucking companies, Drought Angels wouldn’t have been able to deliver their gifts to the drought stricken producers and graziers of Queensland. Over the past several years, Drought Angels has provided relief in the form of stockfeed, financial assistance and a helping hand to the many farming families who have suffered from consecutive dry seasons. Co-founder of Drought Angels Tash Johnson said ERB Brothers Transport carted the majorityof their freight all over the state, at no charge to them or the producers. "Words cannot express our appreciation for what ERB Brothers Transport has done. We couldn’t have achieved our goals without their generosity, or that of the other trucking companies who pitched in when they could," Mrs Johnson said. Other Western Downs companies who donated their time and trucks included Ison Haulage, J&J Contracting and Nobby’s Transport. The non-for-profit organisation was established in 2014 by Mrs Johnson and her friend Nikki Blackwell. Mrs Johnson said she had no idea how bad the drought was in some parts of the state until she started seeing photos on social media accounts such as Facebook. "I started sharing pictures and stories from the

"Nikki and I both agreed that we needed to do something more. We held a ladies cocktail night at the Jamaica Blue Café in Chinchilla, and we raised $4000 for Aussie Helpers. We then organised a gala dinner auction, and we were able to donate another $46,000 to Aussie Helpers. "I remember taking groceries that we had collected to a farmer near Mitchell. The place was bone dry, just dirt, and the livestock in were in poor condition. I drove out and realised that Drought Angels had to do even more to help." Since then, the pair has worked tirelessly and unselfishly to deliver hope and assistance to struggling farmers and recently Drought Angels was recognised for its achievements.

DROUGHT ANGELS DELIVER At this year’s Queensland Regional Community Awards, Drought Angels won the peoples choice award and the Queensland regional service award. Mrs Johnson said to win two of the categories was overwhelming. "We were proud to be nominated, and then to reach the finals was such an honour. But when they called our names out it was just so surreal," Mrs Johnson said. "Neither of us do it for the recognition. We love what we do, and the rewarding part for us is helping our farmers because we don’t like to see them struggle. "It’s been nice to see some rain which has given people some reprieve and hope, but it certainly hasn’t broken the drought everywhere. Hopefully it is a start, but someone people have a long way to go." Drought Angels are currently running a $5 Christmas appeal and all money raised will be put towards food hampers or local business vouchers. Donations can be made via direct deposit, Paypal or cheque, and all are tax deductable. Further details can be found on the Drought Angles Facebook page. .

HARD WORK PAYS OFF In the five years since Craig and Mandy Turner started CMT Haulage, they have witnessed substantial growth and today proudly own eight water trucks. They also have 14 trailers, a side-tipper, step-deck, four flat tops and a brand new vac tanker. Their success far exceeded their initial expectations, and at the start of the year CMT set up a new depot on McNulty Street in Miles. It has allowed the CMT haulage team more room to work, and the ability to store machinery. CMT Haulage offers infield wash-downs, weed and seed certifications, recovery work and bulk haulage in addition to their water trucks. Mandy said the more recent addition to the company is a custom designed step deck built by Warren Southee at Chassisline in Toowoomba. "We can now do vehicle recovery work, shift machinery and also do pipe/stores runs for our clients," Mandy said. "We also have a vacuum tanker for clean outs of mud tanks at the rigs. Our vision is to be recognised as the preferred supplier of rig water support and wash down services in the Surat Basin," Mandy said. The Turner’s have been living in the Miles district

for over 20 years and believe in supporting local business as well as our local community. They have been major sponsors and supporters of the Murilla Kindy annual seafood night, the Miles State School, Miles Trail Ride and the Beef Bells and Bottle Tree festival to name a few. They also employ local staff, which has been a huge benefit to the community. "We have a team of over 20 staff, which to us have become more like a part of our extended family. Without their dedication and loyalty, we couldn’t provide these services efficiently," Mandy said.

THE DRIVER Photo book aims to connect industry with public Photographer Al Mabin has spent 18 months travelling throughout Australia and New Zealand to capture the best moments that the trucking industry has to offer. After living on the road with 110 various trucking companies and their families, Ms Mabin released her photos in a breathtaking book in July this year titled The Driver- Australia and New Zealand on the Back of a Truck. The Driver comes after the success of her first book The Drover, a two-time international best seller and a five-time Australian best seller, which followed the historic journey of 18,000 head of cattle across 2000km in two states. Ms Mabin was overwhelmed at the record number of pre-ordered purchases for The Driver. Two thousand copies were sold before the official release date, which puts her in the running for being one of the best-selling authors for 2016. Ms Mabin said she was excited to finish her journey photographing, living the life and documenting the trucking industry for The Driver. "I wasn’t excited because it was over, but I was excited to say that I had produced the most accurate account of real-life trucking ever documented in Australia and I can’t wait to show the world," Ms Mabin said.

FOR YOUR COPY ■ *The Driver can be purchased online at www.thedriverausnz.com for $69.99. "These amazing people really do need to be recognised." Ms Mabin was born and bred on the land, and her passion has always been to capture images that represent the grass roots of rural Australia. "I am always looking to capture the essence of the outback, the rural industry and the way of life, to evoke feelings and emotions in people that view my pictures. I hope it encourages them to feel a sense of being there, smelling the smells, or hearing the noises associated with a particular image." Ms Mabin, who was named the 2015 Asia Pacific Female Entrepreneur of The Year, is currently travelling around the countryside in a custom designed trailer that serves as a home, an office and a mobile photography art gallery that can be opened to the public.

TIME TO GET SERIOUS ABOUT EFFLUENT CONTROL The Australian Livestock and Rural Transporters Association (ALRTA) has called on transport regulators to get serious about the application of chain of responsibility (CoR) when it comes to livestock preparation. The call comes in response to a report delivered recently by the Queensland Parliamentary Transport and Utilities Committee. It recommended that the Queensland Transport Minister work with other relevant commonwealth and state ministers to ask the National Transport Commission (NTC) to give further consideration within the next twelve months, to means by which it can make more transparent, and more easily understood, the applicability of the relevant CoR provisions to pre-transport stock preparation. ALRTA president Kevin Keenan said that the matter has remained unresolved for two decades and it is past time to get serious about the issue.

"The loss of effluent from a heavy vehicle is routinely treated as a load restraint breach under the HVNL. It is widely known that the primary cause is inadequate preparation of livestock by chain parties prior to transport," said Mr Keenan. "While CoR laws have been in place since 1997 for the purpose of holding off-road chain parties to account when their actions or omissions result in on-road breaches, the provisions have been wholly ineffective in influencing stock preparation practices. The law is not clear and there have been no known prosecutions of chain parties beyond the driver and operator in relation to effluent loss.

"Poor effluent control can have implications for road safety, animal welfare, biosecurity, public amenity and the environment. Trailer effluent tanks can only ever offer a partial solution because of their low capacity and the severe lack of managed dumping sites."

"It is blatantly unfair to continue prosecuting drivers and operators for breaches caused by other parties in the chain.Governments should either make the CoR provisions clear and effective, or just exempt effluent from the HVNL load restraint provisions altogether," said Mr Keenan.

REPORT RECOMMENDS That the Queensland Transport Minister work with other relevant Federal and State ministers to ask the National Transport Commission (NTC) to give further consideration within the next twelve months, to means by which it can make more transparent, and more easily understood, the applicability of the relevant CoR provisions to pre-transport stock preparation.

AUSTRALIAN TRUCKING ASSOCIATION Veteran’s employment program to benefit industry In recognising the synergies between logistics in the military and the road freight industry, vice chair of the Australian Trucking Association (ATA) Geoff Crouch said the Australian trucking industry will reap benefits from the Prime Minister’s Veterans Employment Program. The program is an initiative to provide Australian Defence Force (ADF) personnel with employment opportunities in the private sector once they are ready for opportunities for post-service life. Mr Crouch said that personnel who previously served in the ADF can offer a wide range of skills and experiences; particularly

to not just benefit ADF personnel but the wider economy," Mr Crouch said. Mr Crouch has employed numerous former members of the defence force over the last 30 years at Ron Crouch Transport. "These people are exceptionally valuable members of the workforce, and this is a result

Pipers on the wall.

This year a total of 433 trucks united at Gatton for Lights on the Hill, a memorial weekend dedicated to those of the transport industry who have passed to soon. Accompanying the vehicles was a supportive crowd of drivers, business owners and industry enthusiasts who travelled from all corners of the country. The two day weekend provides drivers and their families with an opportunity to gather with industry peers and representatives, and to remember those who have tragically lost their life whilst on duty. In the background, it also helps to spread the very important message amongst the general public that ‘without trucks, Australia stops’.

This was the first year that the memorial service and the memorial convoy were rolled into the one weekend. Lights on the Hill ambassador and renowned country musician Terry Clark said he was overwhelmed at the result of this year’s convoy. "It was the best ever. Thanks must go to the organising team, the truckies and drivers, and the crowd that rocked the convoy at Gatton," Mr Clark said. Our Team The Lights on the Hill committee consists of volunteers who dedicate their free time to ensure the memory of drivers lost in a work related accident or by other means have a place to be remembered. The team consists of a small number of people who are directly linked to the transport industry in a variety of ways (owner drivers/drivers/company owners), or who have been directly impacted by it (widows/family members of lost drivers/lovers of trucks). As you can imagine the amount of work that is required to continue to maintain and extend the wall & organise the annual event is quite large. The Lights on the Hill team are always happy to welcome new volunteers to ease the load. For more information or to express your interest in becoming a volunteer please email us lightsonthehill@live.com.au.

"The wall is the organisations way of immortalising their sacrifices and triumphs in service to their country." The memorial wall is situated within the transport hub of Gatton in Lake Apex Park. This year 57 names were added to the memorial wall.

Managing director Shannon McDermott said the ENZED® Surat Basin team can go onsite with their fully mine spec mobile ‘Hose Doctor’ vehicles which helps to avoid costly downtime. "We are a premier distributor for Parker Hannifin products and can access their complete range of motion and control technologies. We stock fluid transfer equipment from oil and fuel guns, meters and transfer pumps, to heavy duty retractable reels and diesel fuel storage kits for vehicles. We can also supply a complete range of environmental spill kits and absorbent products." ENZED® Surat Basin has been operating in Chinchilla since late 2010. Shannon and his wife Tanya set up the Enzed franchise to service the hydraulic and pneumatic needs of the mining, agriculture, earthmoving and construction industries. A former Navy marine technician, Shannon started out in industry in Toowoomba where he gained 10 years of valuable industry experience.

From our humble beginnings as an owner operator in one vehicle, now six years later we have a fantastic service centre with a showroom and a workshop." ENZED® Surat Basin services a large geographical area from Mungallala in the west to Macalister in the east, from Moonie in the south to Taroom in the north. TRUCKIES WORKING FOR TRUCKIES NRFA bringing new solutions to old problems INFORMATION ■ visit www.nrfa.com.au. The formation of the National Road Freighters Association (NRFA) was initiated by Mick Pattel and co-founder Peter Whytcross after the National Road Transport shutdown on 28 July, 2008. The pair could see that small business enterprises had very little say in the processes that affected their day to day operations. Businesses had next to no representation when dealing with government and bureaucrats. NRFA is not just a trucking association- it’s about representing anyone involved in freight distribution which includes farmers, graziers, manufacturers, miners and anyone who generates freight. Members of NRFA don't have to own a truck to join. NRFA is a grassroots association and the board members are active participants in the business of freight distribution. They bring to the table firsthand experience from every facet of transport including bulk, general, oversized, refrigerated, dangerous goods, and livestock. NRFA recognises the many different requirements across the entire freight industry. NRFA has established a positive working relationship with the regulatory bodies and other industries organisations. The association has the unique ability to promote real life, real time experience in relation to regulation and compliance.

NRFA President Tony Hopkins giving a media conference prior to the Anti RSRT protest convoy held in Rockhampton and another held in Townsville around the same time, I think it was April 2016 just before the RSRT abolition. NRFA were recently very successful in working with industry leaders and politicians to reverse the destructive Remuneration Safe Rates Tribunal (RSRT) and they are now working on policies that

will achieve equity within the transport industry for all participants in freight distribution. The association is currently into its third president and has maintained a very dedicated

board and a very positive outlook for the future of the freight industry. For more information, visit www.nrfa.com.au.

COMMITTED TO THE TRUCK AND TRANSPORT INDUSTRY QTR Bridgestone Toowoomba welcomes trucks of all sizes One of the biggest drawcards to QTR Bridgestone Toowoomba is the specifically designed workshop which allows a combination of vehicles on site, ranging from B-doubles through to AB-triples. QTR Bridgestone Toowoomba provides service to local trucks, as well as a number of interstate vehicles and western traffic from areas as far as Darwin in the Northern Territory. Second-in-charge Troy Vidler said being a Bridgestone Service Centre licensed store means that while they are independent, they can still provide all the premium products Bridgestone are known for. "We also have access to a number of other quality tyre brands, and are able to cater for all budgets. We sell tyres for cars, trucks, and both small and

medium earthmoving machinery," Mr Vidler said. "Our Bandag products, which are a premium brand of retread for trucks and commercial equipment, are manufactured locally in Toowoomba. We also offer passenger car wheel alignments to help ensure everyone’s safety, and nitrogen inflation. "Nitrogen inflation is very beneficial for steer tyres as it allows the tyre to run cooler and maintain pressure for a lot longer. It’s turning out to be a very good product, and we feel this is extremely beneficial to the trucking industry," Mr Vidler said. QTR Bridgestone Toowoomba is committed to the truck and transport industry, and is proud to offer 24-hour roadside assistance.

ROADTEAM Understanding that comes from hands-on experience ANYONE who’s worked in the heavy transport industry knows that it’s unique. As a business owner, doing business with someone who has a thorough understanding of the industry automatically puts you one step ahead. Roadteam’s Rex Chapman said NTI’s Roadteam has that valuable experience and understanding. “Roadteam is made up of authorised representatives of NTI Limited, the market leader in Australia’s heavy commercial motor insurance,” Mr Chapman said. “Our background is in trucking and insurance. We certainly know trucks. We also know the issues business owners face. We draw on this understanding as we offer advice on insurance and more.” Some Roadteam members have owned transport businesses themselves. Others have worked in insurance specialising in transport. They all offer a level of expertise that others simply can’t match. Mr Chapman said Roadteam are extremely proud about the personal service they deliver. “We sit down with the business owner and get to know their business, their issues and the risks they face. We’re good listeners but we’re also good at offering advice,” Mr Chapman said. “NTI are transport insurance specialists and they’ve designed their products so they can be tailored to suit the unique needs of every business. After all, every business is different. We help people to make sense of what’s on offer and to

understand what they need.” Roadteam members are known for going above and beyond the call of duty. They recognise that owners of transport companies are busy people. It’s no problem for them to attend meetings outside of regular business hours. They also aren’t afraid to pick up the phone at any time to answer a question or offer advice. “Our customers get value for money premiums, fast claims processing, 24/7 on-site accident assistance, access to premium repairers, and a lifetime repairs and parts guarantee thanks to Roadteam and NTI. Wherever you are in Australia, Roadteam can help,” Mr Chapman said.

TRUCKS ADD TO BUSTLING BUSINESS At Wideland, we’re continually looking to grow our business to deliver more to benefit our customers. In August this year, Toowoomba’s Wideland Group acquired the successful Scania truck business known locally as Spann’s, in a strategic business move to provide additional services to customers. Managing director Mick McDonald said the acquisition allowed the group to branch into a market that complements its existing agricultural and machinery businesses. "At Wideland, we’re continually looking to grow our business to deliver more to benefit our customers. In today’s highly competitive market, our mantra is to deliver more by delivering more services, more technical support, more solutions, more innovation, and more guidance," said Mr McDonald. "It is trucks and machinery that help keep our country and our people ticking- trucks enable the transport of food to our tables, and they deliver the farming and agricultural components to help grow that food. It makes perfect sense to combine trucks with our already established agricultural and construction machinery business." Mr McDonald said Scania trucks are a well known and reputable brand, and Wideland will continue to sell and service the full range of Scania trucks. Filling the truck sales role will be Ross
